This place deserves a 3.5-star rating. I really don't have much to complain about. My younger brother chose this location for his birthday dinner. We walked in on a slow Tuesday night. It's a large place with three workers, but no other customers were there. He had tried it before and loved it, so I had to oblige. I ordered the Salmon Teriyaki plate with salad, rice, and a starter soup. My plate wasn't anything spectacular--it was tasty enough, but not amazing. I did enjoy the sushi that came with it, so that was a nice bonus. My brother ordered two sushi rolls. They took longer than my plate since they were baked rolls, but once they came out, they were delicious. He let me try both, and I loved how they were topped. I've added pictures to this post because I don't know their names, but they're definitely something you should try. The service was standard--not outstanding, but friendly enough. don't let the stars fool you, this place is good. It wasn't busy on a Sunday afternoon, we were quickly seated and started off with some drinks. They don't have a full bar or anything, mainly sake and some wine / soda I believe. They have a variety of options that I was surprised about. It's located near the Hacienda Theater, a good choice before or after the movie. We finished a day of running errands and shopping. This meal honestly hit the spot and the food came out fast. Definitely check them out if you're in the area. There's seating indoors only. This was my go to place for years! I took my wife for dinner and she ordered a pa pa san roll which has a spider roll. There was none and after discussing with older man who I assume is the owner or related to the owner as he is there eveyday...he said the softshell was chopped. After spreading the roll inside Insae two small pieces. Look at the pic and you decide. The gentleman is very rude! He made it a point that the spider is chopped! Yesterday my grandson and I went to Kanpai Sushi for take out. My grandson ordered the teriyaki beef and gyoza and I ordered the Chirashi. When we got home my grandson said his rice tasted like soap and was cold. I didn't taste the soap but it was definitely cold. I heated it up and it was fine. When I looked at my chirashi it was covered in fish and looked really good. I opened my food container and it smelled a little fishy. When I took my first bite the rice was ice cold too with no seasoning. It wasn't sushi rice it was just plane white rice. When I took my first bite of fish I had to spit it out and the texture and flavor was very bad. I drove it all the way back to get a refund which the lady was very kind and apologized for the problem. I noticed that the food servers had no hair covering and the guy had curly longer hair which grossed me out. Won't be going back there again. I've come to two different locations, Dublin and Brentwood. I thought maybe it was a fluke. But this is not authentic Japanese sushi. It doesn't taste like traditional sushi and I eat sushi ALOT from all over and this is not made correctly. You can taste the difference. So disappointing to get sushi that is poor food quality. The food looks good, but if you know sushi you know quality. Service was nonexistent, I had to get up and ask for water, ask for a box, and almost beg him to bring me my check. In my opinion there aren't too many good quality sushi spots out this way. So when I saw Kanpai Sushi pop up on the Hot & New list in my area, I knew I had to come check them out. They are in a pretty great location located right next to Five Guys, the movie theater, and Starbucks. In front of the restaurant is a huge parking lot with plenty of parking. Although they are opening during a crazy time with COVID, they are making do. They are currently offering takeout, delivery and outdoor dining. We came during their grand opening deal, so we received 20% off our order (although I'm not sure how long this promotion will last). When we arrived to pick up our order, the server let us know that it would be a couple more minutes because they messed up on one of the rolls. They made a Super California roll instead of a Dragon Roll but included it with our order free of charge- so nice! My fiancé and I were hangry so we ordered a lot: Hamachi Kama- Not fishy at all! A bit crispy and had a good amount of meat on the bones. It came with a nice dipping sauce which really helped enhance the natural flavor of the Kama. Chicken Teriyaki Dinner Combo- Came with miso soup, salad, and rice. The chicken was slightly smokey and came with a good amount of teriyaki sauce. Salmon Nigiri, Hamachi Nigiri, and Unagi Nigiri- Perfectly balanced between the fish and the rice. The cuts were all pretty even. Fish was pretty fresh as well. Dragon Roll- The shrimp tempura inside was still crispy when we got home! Loaded with the unagi and avocado toppings. Each bite was balanced and flavorful and wasn't drowning in the unagi sauce. Deep Fried California Roll- Still crispy too! It was perfectly crispy without being oily. The California Roll itself had a good ratio of avocado to crab meat to rice as well. It didn't fall apart when I took a bite either! Overall I am very impressed with Kanpai. Everything we had was tasty and satisfied our craving for sushi. The tempura veggie roll was a bit sweet to our liking, but with wasabi and soy, it was pretty good, at least by my assessment. I wanted to like this place because it was near our hotel and convenient in a nice area near all the little plaza places, but there was NO vibe, nothing special about the inside, and what made it worse was the customer service was horrible! The guy that was serving us didn't even say hello or acknowledge that we were paying customers. He didn't even speak to us at all even when he was getting our order. I always love sushi and wanted to try this new Japanese restaurant in Dublin. It's not bad. A little above average but nothing stood out. I ordered online and our order was ready in 30 minutes. My husband had the beef teriyaki dinner with a side of sashimi. The beef was ok. It could have been more tender and it was cooked all the way through with no pink. My chirashi had a generous amount of fish over sushi rice. The quality and freshness of sashimi was average though. The texture on a few slices were off which is definitely a freshness indicator. My boyfriend and I stopped by here for a quick bite. It appears to be a small local biz/family owned, not a chain restaurant. I ordered the Veggie Roll with soy paper (instead of the default nori) and my boyfriend ordered the Chicken Yaki Udon. The gentleman helping us was incredibly kind, helpful, and quick to service us. The staff don't speak English very well, but they understood us with zero problems. The food arrived quickly, and I was incredibly happy with how my roll tasted! It was also incredibly cheap - $10 for my roll. I'd recommend this place for a quick bite to eat when you want something nice and authentic. I'm just not a fan and I looooove sushi. First off, I want to start off by saying that this review is strictly based off of the food quality, pricing, and portion. Honestly, I would have given 2-stars instead of 3-stars, but the extra star is really for the staff here. The customer service was phenomenal and location of this new restaurant cannot be beaten. I live in Pleasanton and this borderlines Pleasanton/Dublin, so it is quite convenient to get to. I also like that there's ample parking and I can walk around the plaza, or even across the street to do some shopping. It is also a good destination to grab lunch/dinner, if you're seeing a movies at the theaters too. So, my friend and I decided to finally check out this new place on Sunday. When we got there, we were immediately greeted and they even accommodated us eating outdoors. The restaurant itself was clean, organized, and compliant with covid regulations. Upon sitting down to look at the menu to order, I was thrown off by the price increase in everything. Mind you, this is a brand new restaurant but yet their new menus were already altered for a price increase in every item. I can look past this as I know it's a difficult time during the pandemic. We ordered 2 sushi rolls (49ers roll and Sugar Mama roll) and a side of garlic noodles and the entire meal came out to $50 for two. I think if it was a good meal, I wouldn't have minded the price as much. The meal was par at most. The portion is definitely less than most other sushi restaurants. There was a total of 8 pieces per roll. The Sugar Mama roll was drenched in sauces, so you couldn't even tell that the fish were fresh or top grade. The 49ers roll had less sauce but because of that you can tell the rice consistency was nonexistent and the imitation crab mix inside of the sushi roll is heavy handed with Mayo. So unless you're a really big Mayo fan, the taste may be a bit off putting/overwhelming. The garlic noodle was a bigger portion than we expected (no complaints there), was flavorful, and on the dryer end of stir fry noodles. I think it speaks volume when you go to a sushi restaurant and you end up liking their garlic noodle over their actual specialty in sushi, right? Nevertheless, it was a good experience to try out and support a new business in town. But I wouldn't necessarily have it at the top of my list or have this place be my go-to for sushi. read more

JAPANESE FOOD GROWING ON ME I've traveled around different places around the world but I've only been to Japan once. However something about Japanese food that is growing on me lately. In terms of simplicity two features of Japanese food I think about - colorful and flavorful. When I go to a Japanese return I either go to eat sushi or ramen but not both. However there was one Japanese eatery I ate at where I had not only sushi but also udon. The first time I came to Kanpai Sushi was in October with my friend. For the sushi rolls we ordered the Mendocino, Godzilla, and Deep Fried California. Out of the three rolls the California was the one I liked the most because I never had that roll deep fried. In addition the Deep Fried California did not have a lot of crab meat so you can taste the whole roll. Even though the Mendocino and Godzilla were tasty both had too much sauce for my liking. However if you like a lot of sauce with your sushi rolls these rolls would be great for you. This eatery doesn't sell ramen, which I am glad as I have been eating too much ramen. With number of udon soups on the menu I had the opportunity to try something different. For that night I ordered the Tempura Udon. I liked how the tempera items were separated from the broth so that the breading will still be crunchy. With the separation of items you can decide if you want to place some of tempura in the soup. I decided not to combine the tempura with the soup as I felt you get different textures when you eat the soup and tempura separately. The second time I ate here was in November. Just as with the first time I ordered rolls and udon but not the exact same items. For the rolls I wanted a balance between raw, sauced, and cooked hence my friend and I ordered the Rainbow Roll, 49ers Roll, Rolls Royce, and Caterpillar Roll. Out of the rolls I preferred the 49ers Roll because the salmon melts in your mouth. For udon I ordered the Beef Udon. To my surprise and delight each cut of beef was seared. The seared beef flavors the broth that brings a depth of texture. In terms of presentation I would rather have seared, brown-colored beef than an unseared, grey-colored beef. Eating here at Kanpai Sushi provided an insight why Japanese food is growing on me with the different varieties of sushi rolls and udon. Next time I come here I will try different types of items such as sashimi and dinner entrees. read more

Wow! Some of the freshest sushi I have had in a while--better than some places I have been to in San Francisco! The Marilyn Monroe roll is just the perfect amount of spice and I can't wait to have it again! Pretty usual pricing maybe a little on the higher side-- 2 rolls cost me $30-not too expensive, but there were definitely some pricier rolls to order. Another option for sushi in the Tri-Valley area! I guess they also have another location in Antioch. This place is right next to Five Guys in Dublin. And it sucks that they opened during COVID, because to me, you really need to experience sushi in the restaurant. So I really can't say how the dining in experience can be. We ordered 3 special rolls (which I already forget the names of), and a couple of grilled dishes. Let me start with the grill. I'd skip the katsu. It was way overpriced for what you get. I really was disappointed the most with this one. I guess I am spoiled with the true authentic katsus in Japan. Here, the pieces are just small and chewy with little flavor. We also got the teri salmon, which was a bit dry for my tastes. But you don't come to a place with "sushi" in its name for stuff other than sushi. The rolls were really good actually. My favorite was definitely the one with soft shell crab in it, topped with maguro. Really tasty, and loved the flavor of the rolls. A liked that it wasn't loaded up with fake sauces and stuff. Great sizing too! Also got a standard rainbow roll which was great as well. Again, wish we could have got the full dine in experience and wish I was able to have some alcohol with my sushi. Ordered takeout from here as a friend recommended me to try this spot as this is her new go-to sushi spot if you're from the area. We placed the order online and wait was about 25 mins from purchase. Pickup was efficient and secured nicely. Lots of parking in the area I ordered the Cherry Blossom roll and Godzilla roll, while my friend ordered the Allen roll and Dynamite roll - total was around $50+ w/ tax and tip, you are paying for the quality of fish so it is a bit more on the pricier side but overall the taste and portions make up for it. A lot of their rolls are very saucy, it's more of a fusion style compared to typical sushi rolls. Being it my first time here, the two rolls I ordered were very filling, and definitely could've ordered just one specialty roll to be content for lunch time. read more

When I picked up I asked the man for a side of eel sauce and spicy mayo, he was really annoyed and told me I needed to order it through the app. I actually tried doing that before ordering but they don't have sauces on their menu for ordering. I explained this to him and then he told me he doesn't think I TRIED... and that I was supposed to call door dash before ordering and tell them I wanted eel sauce and spicy mayo. What??? I don't even know how you can call DoorDash and ask for something before you even order or pay. Whatever. I asked him can you pls show me how to do this so I can do it in the future and he told me NO I can't show you. ??? I've been here twice and each time the rolls were decadent. The ambiance is basic, there is a sushi bar but I don't think bellying up is an option at them moment due to Covid restrictions. Was not very impressed with this sushi spot. While it wasn't bad, it was very expensive for the quality of sushi rolls provided. I would say a 3 star place with 4/5 star pricing, so 2 star in total. I sort of see 2 kinds of sushi places, those that have California rolls with different toppings, average sushi places. Then places with good quality more expensive sushi. This place fell into the average California roll category but with a good quality sushi place pricing. At first glance in the photos the sushi looked good, but this is what they do, the wrap the rice on the bottom TWICE. So from the top and quick glances you think you get a good roll with not too much rice but it was double stacked on the bottom. I just tried this sushi place for the first time today. I absolutely love sushi (ordering it 2-3 times per week, from my favorite places), thus I finally decided to give this place a try as our last outdoor dining opportunity, before we transitioned back into stricter shelter-in-place orders (due to COVID-19). I 100% regret my decision however. The Hamachi sashimi tasted like it had been previously frozen and thawed out (multiple times). The (spicy) OMG roll not only didn't look appetizing, but it also did not taste fresh (and the sauce on this roll is definitely less than ideal. The garlic edamame also had zero flavor (....I could see the garlic sprinkled throughout but could not taste it....so weird). Also, the dressing that came on the salad tasted really strange (....not a flavor that I've ever tasted before, on the salads that come with sashimi orders). - I literally took 1 bite of each item and could not consume any more. I had to throw away all of it, as I was terrified that another bite might make me sick. I immediately started digging for gum in my purse....I had to get the different tastes out of my mouth.
