Tried Fat Fish Sushi for the second time as takeout for a work lunch, and unfortunately, it was another disappointing experience. The food was packaged well and their prices were comparable to other Japanese places in the area. The gyoza were cooked well and was accompanied by a traditional soy-based dipping sauce. However, the quality of the sushi and rolls were just not up to par, especially for a mid-week meal when high-quality fish can be readily sourced. Main cons: - The sushi rice was somewhat mushy and underseasoned for our palate - The white fish nigiri was not edible - The albacore tuna and maguro nigiri looked off and smelled fishy, so we did not finish either of them - The hamachi nigiri and the hamachi roll was only ok and did not have the expected buttery texture - The tamago nigiri did not have the right ratio of sweet and savory for our palate, or the right texture - The lion king roll included cooked salmon that was overcooked, although the underlying California roll part was fine We really wanted to like this place as they are close to work and delivery quickly, but their quality didn't meet expectations. read more

I have not been here for years! The quality of fish seems to have gone downhill a lot. Also take out takes too long. The two youngsters at the cashier did not care much. I came here to buy take out. The ordering process was easy. The cashier or front desk staff was welcoming. Took my order with ease and the wait time for the food items I ordered was under 10 minutes. The food was descent. I would not say it's spectacular nor was it bad. It's good. Nothing fancy. Fat Fish has been around for business for a long time and it's been through several rounds of management or ownership changes over the past years. Haven't been back in at least 9-10 years, and it's still just as good as I last remember it! This was my go-to when I used to work in the area. The only difference is that they largely moved to just serving dine-in orders in plastic to-go boxes. Coming back here after so many years made me realize that this is the place where I think they do the Lion King roll the best. Almost every other place I've tried has a weird twist to their recipe. The restaurant setting was fairly plain, but I noticed that they offered a good amount of seating inside for dine-in guests. Was quoted 15-30 minutes online, but it was ready when I arrived about 10 minutes after ordering. Then I discovered that the order was wrong. I was given edamame by mistake, instead of egg rolls. No apology given, just confusion (one worker questioning another worker on why she would do that), but they assured me they would make the correct order and it would take 5 more minutes. In reality, I had to wait an additional 10-15 minutes, but at least they fixed the issue. Staff was friendly. Btw, the menu states that the egg rolls are made with a mix of veggies and meat. But these were filled with vegetables only, no meat. Taste was okay, and the eggroll wrapper was thicker than I'd prefer. I'm used to the king and queen eggroll spots where the product has more size and better flavor with a light and crispy exterior (I know plenty of these in the south bay). It wasn't bad, but I probably wouldn't get this again at Fat Fish Sushi. On the other hand, the lion king roll was really good, made with quality ingredients and prepared perfectly. Came here because I watched one of those Bay Area food bloggers rave about this place. It was my first time here and we asked for a table of 3, not realizing you had to pay first to be seated. The gentleman at the counter was kind of rude when telling us to order first. Nonetheless we ordered the following: Sashimi Dinner Mixed Tempura Seaweed Salad Nigiri Deluxe Bay Scallop When we received the food it was all in to go containers. Apparently they said they didn't have dine in plates and everything was served in these plastic containers, which I found so wasteful. I personally had the Sashimi dinner and was excited that pieces were large. But was disappointed because it didn't taste fresh and lacked in quality. Decently priced sushi & food considering the extensive menu. Service was pretty quick. I found it peculiar it was a restaurant with that many options, yet you order first then sit down. I also found it a bit bizarre that all food was served in plastic to-go containers. Unsure the reasoning behind, just that it was what they were doing at the moment. The restaurant is decently sized and could get fairly loud, however there is music playing but not overly loud to where you need to over speak to your dining dates. The food was good. Almost forgot about this great take out sushi place since I have been dining in more than take outs. This time we tried dining in. The booth seats is a bit worn out and there were tape over the seats so not exactly comfortable to sit for long conversations. However, the quality of the food and price made me still give them a 5. We got the sushi bento, 2 items bento, super hamachi roll and best friend rolls. All for under $80 It's hard to get great prices sushi in the tri valley and I would say Fat Fish fits this budget. Especially they don't do a mandatory tips so I think this would be a great hangout place for teens and big groups. The server only brings your food to your table so it's not exactly a full service dining experience. I saw large groups of kids came with parents so definitely kid friendly. Highly recommend the super hamachi roll and bento boxes. read more

I got a bento box for dinner and my husband got a few rolls. The food was good, just wasn't amazing. I'm not a fan of restaurants that require you to order up front before sitting down. Makes ordering a rushed decision! We also ordered sake and Sapporo and they didn't have glasses for sake bombs and took a while to find glasses that we could drink them out of. This is one of our favorite sushi spots! My fiancé and I found it by chance, and we've been going back ever since. At first, we were a bit spectacle because it's a small hole in the wall, off the beaten path. Happy we took a chance! What makes this place so much better than other sushi restaurants is that their rolls are so much bigger, and the fish is so fresh. It's just us two, so we always like to order 2 specialty rolls, and one small filler roll. We just went on 6/18/25 and ordered a Super Rainbow Roll, Volcano Roll and an Oregon Roll. We were a little bummed because we always like to order a Sapporo (either on draft or bottle), but they were all out. Which is super rare because we've came to this restaurant about 10 times and they have never run out of beer before. If this was our first time eating at this restaurant, we would have given them 4 stars instead of 5 just for that reason, but because I know this wasn't normal they deserve 5 stars! A longstanding gem, the portion sizes are as large as I remember. Bento box salads are still delicious and you get quite the bang for your buck here. It's very quiet around here on a Sunday, but I heard that it usually gets packed during lunch time because of people from work (probably ones who work near Stanford Health Care). About the restaurant, it seems ok here but everything here seems too mediocre in atmosphere and food. The food looks too decent and something that you would you go for lunch, not dinner. It's good but the quality is average. The portion size is quite small. I wouldn't say that the food is bad, but it's just average. At the same time, it's quite affordable to get a bento box here compared to gourmet sushi's. This place seems to be more of a fast food place rather than a sit-down restaurant based on the atmosphere and food. Not a bad place to go, but would only come here during lunch. read more

Fat Fish has always been my go to spot (the one in San Leandro mainly) because their sushi's have always been good and affordable. Papa Roll is my go to Roll and it was delicious. My friends and I also had the Good Boy Roll, which was very similar to the Papa Roll but without the Tempura flakes on top. We did try something new, their Ramen. We tried their Spicy Black Truffle ramen... and the pork belly in the soup was mouth watering. The slight char on it gave it that nice crisp and it really soaked up the soup which made it very flavorful. We got there right when they opened for their dinner time and we got our food very quickly. Normally even after an hour after their dinner time, they get packed and service is okay, but it is always understandable. It was really cold in the restaurant and they didn't fully check the tables because we had a soda cup on the corner of our table. Not sure if the can make it slightly warmer because we are eating raw fish, but it was pretty freezing in there. "Mid Fish Sushi" might be more accurate. The sushi was kinda falling apart and stuck to the plate at the same time -- impressive, but not in a good way. You definitely get what you pay for here. But as soon as you put it in your mouth... it's lost most of its moisture and that tangy flavor you get from fresh fish is completely absent. This place used to be my favorite sushi place ever and was introduced to here by my then boyfriend 8 years ago for our first date. (He's now my fiancé) It has always held a special place in my heart with good food at a cheap price. However, over the years prices have constantly gone up and service has been awful. They implemented a new policy where they can only provide 2 spicy mayo per order and would charge for every single one after. My friend had ordered around 10 rolls and they said they would only give 2 spicy mayos for that entire order. Which doesn't make sense when we could just order each one individually? I placed an individual order after and when I asked for spicy mayo they told me no because I was part of my friend's order? I was ordering for myself and their order was for their family. Unfortunately I never see Mike anymore. Service hasn't been as good as it was 2 years ago. Oh and also they claimed they gave us the 2 free spicy mayos thats allowed per order already in the bag but there was none. So we paid for all 10 of the spicy mayo. The two hispanic girls had the audacity to argue with me about this saying they already gave this to us. On top of this all, after driving home for an hour they apparently shorted us on two rolls. They have an extensive menu with plenty of sushi rolls to choose from. They are mostly huge but need help on presentation. Among the rolls we keep coming back for are the Salmon Skin Roll (crispy and tasty salmon skin), Volcano Roll (shrimp tempura and imitation crab topped with tuna, salmon, and spicy imitation crab), Red Lion Roll (baked CA roll with spicy salmon), Superman Roll (soft-shell crab and imitation crab topped with unagi, avocado, and tobiko), and much more! We orders the best friend and few other rolls as well as the Sashimi Donburi. Sashimi was ok this time - fresh but the red sauce they gave was super sour and off putting. Thank goodness I didn't put it on the whole donburi. The rolls were okay and hit the spot eventhough no matter what combo we got they were about the same. We also ordered the fried oyster.
