Just spent $100 on dinner here and it was barely adequate...tough, flavorless. For comparison, I spent $100 on dinner last night at 1or8, and it was a different (unbelievably better, cleaner) planet. I'll still get occasional desperation takeout here, but will order the most basic things only: set sushi dinners and the like. Whatever you do, completely pass by the "specials" menu. Came here for a quick take out bite around 2pm on a Sunday. I wasn't greeted at the door which is ok, I asked the waitress if they have any weekend specials, she said no. I placed my order, paid and picked up a to go menu... upon looking at the back of the menu I see they have specials from Monday-Sunday from 12-4. I told her I thought you said you didn't have any specials.. she knew exactly what I meant. I could have paid half for what I ordered. Our favorite rolls includes the Azuka (bean paste, sweet potato, and cream cheese), the spicy scallop and the Aloha. I never really "crave" sushi. I can't really discern mediocre eel from amazing eel. All carrot-ginger dressing tastes the same to me. I rarely see anything on a generic sushi menu that blows me away. Call me a snob, but I like restaurants with speciality foods. It's a wonderful feeling knowing that a restaurant has one or two standout dishes that show unprecedented craftsmanship and creativity. Putting cold fish over a bed of rice does not really show ingenuity. My girl, Ms. Shani, suggested Sushi D, after we imbibed a few in Bed-Stuy a few hours before. Shani's a vegan and attested to the quality of Sushi D. Seeing that most of the restaurants in Fort Greene (minus Red Bamboo, which we both dislike) have a bistroish-meat-all-in-yo-face! feel, Sushi D seemed like a place where Shani could fill up on veggie rolls. And at least I knew that I'd be able to eat a few pieces of boring fish over rice. We enter, and were given a free plate of edamame and hot towels. Score one for customer service!!! Shani gets some hot saki, and I get a glass of decent red Merlot. We open the menu and I must say that I was fully impressed. The restaurant carried the standard issue rolls and apps, but also had a special winter menu, featuring rolls consisting of tofu tempura, butternut squash, and radish. The vibe was definitely "haute sushi," something I haven't really experienced in Brooklyn. For my meal, I opted for eel, mackerel, and a green salad. Shani got two vegan designer rolls, complete with tofu tempura, seaweed salad, and picked cucumbers. (I believe one of them was called the 'verdant.') Shani and I both agreed that the carrot-ginger dressing was the best that we have ever eaten. It had this amazing roasted flavor, which made me think that the chefs probably added some tamari to the batch. My eel was delicious. The best part about the eel was that Sushi D goes light on the nasty, overly cloying terrikayi sauce that usually inundates most eel at crappier sushi places. My mackerel was a touch dry and flaky, so I must deduct one star. Shani LOVED her vegan rolls. When we hang out, we usually chat until out mouths fall off. If it's any indication of the quality of Sushi D, Shani and I barely spoke two words during the meal. I have added this place to my mental 'to return to' list. While some things are good; the restaurant its self is cute and well designed, the menu always seems daring (smoked salmon roe with white chocolate anyone?!) and the staff are friendly and accommodating the biggest issue is that the food is just sloppy. The rolls are always falling apart, the rice is inconsistently fresh, the size of portions seems to vary daily (i got a spider roll [$8] with 3pcs 'cause that's all that fit in the takeout container they chose) they put the sushi ABOVE the HOT soup in the take out and the wasabi and ginger are BOTH sub-par. Fantastic sushi? Not quite, but it's a great value and I had a tasty meal. My friends and I ordered the vegetable roll, spider roll, 'aloha roll' (slamon, mango and avocado - i like! the mango worked well), california roll, and some chicken teriyaki, all very good. The teriyaki sauce was especially memorable...we also got some sort of braised chicken kebob app, which might have been a highlight - I was lapping that thing up. Drinks are reasonable - one friend had a sub-par glass of red, but I had a drink special, consisting of sake, lime juice and seltzer, I loved it, and I got a small order of their cheapest hot sake - it was a lot of sake for $4! When I was looking for my apartment, my realtor used Sushi D as a selling point. It's some of the best sushi I have ever eaten. The restaurant has an upscale vibe with dim lighting, black tables, leather chairs, and sleek decor. They also had plenty of outdoor seating. The sushi however is only mediocre. The Salmon and Avocado Roll was okay. The filling was lacking in fish and was unevenly distributed throughout the roll. The rice was a bit too sticky for my tastes. The Ruby Roll had "Krab" and Asparagus topped with Spicy Tuna and Black Tobiko. The uniformity of the pieces were greatly lacking. Some pieces were overflowing and others were a bit squished. The spicy tuna was not very spicy. The Fushion Roll had a lot flavors going on. It had black pepper seared tuna, red onions, and a cucumber & seaweed salad inside with seared yellowtail, eared salmon, cilantro and off brand sriracha/miso sauce on top. It was weird and way too saucy. The best roll was the D roll. It had eel, green tempura flakes inside with avocado, misago, and eel sauce on top. This more simple combination was better. It also look like a chef with more skill made it. All the pieces were the same height, width, and size. The service was good. The prices were reasonable. You get what you pay for. I was expecting it to be mediocre because the prices were pretty low, but it was really really good, both times I went. They have a tasty special roll with mango and white tuna that I am slightly obsessed with. And I've always loved spicy tuna, and not all places get it right in my opinion, but they get it oh so right here. One thing - the service is a little weird.. they hover a lot and refill your water and ask you how you are while your mouth is stuffed full of sushi, but then when your plates are cleared and you'd really rather go home (the atmosphere is not sooo fantastic that you feel like hanging out) they take 400 years to bring you your check. Update: My favorite waiter, my Asian brother from another mother has been fired. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth (and that's not the miso). As I observe the other patrons, everyone seems as happy and delighted as I am (with their real sushi rolls). I love the house roll (shrimp tempura/broiled eel) and kani salad (julienne crab, cucumber, mango and salmon caviar) The wait staff are so sweet and friendly. Had a lack luster experience here. The ambiance and decor is nice here but as for the food. I've had better. I ordered the King Crab roll...and all it came with was King crab. There were cucumbers, avocado, or carrots, not even spicy mayo. The roll only had rice, seaweed, and crab. That was pretty disappointing and bland. Sushi D has some pretty decent sushi and imaginative rolls. The yasai gyoza was also very tasty. In particular, I recommend the Greene vegatarian roll with asparagus and sweet tofu. Also, always ask what the daily specials rolls are...these are usually very yummy. I actually liked the rolls here better than the much acclaimed Gen (Gen is better for appetizers I think than rolls). But, in general, nothing about Sushi D really stands out. It is a good to go place for the neighborhood, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. In addition, the service can be a bit spotty. Brother says it's the best sushi he's had in NYC; if that's the case then he needs to get out and spend a little more... Appetizers: had seaweed salad (OK, just like it is everywhere else) and a kabocha croquette (just what I was looking for -- sweet and savory with a nice mayo-wasabi dipping sauce. I feel sorry for folks that live in this neighborhood and for whom this is the only sushi place nearby. Our food was okay, but the service was some kind of Twilight Zone alternate reality terrible. Our server was identified as "Jack" on the bill, so he's the one I assume waited on us first. When he asked us if we were ready to order, I asked if there were any specials (noting the sandwich board sign out front that had a bunch of things listed that I didn't see on the menu). His response: "The menu is right here in front of you." He did that a couple of times until I gave up. I asked if they had cold ramen, which elicited a short and uninformed history of ramen for dummies. Yeah, I know what broth is, just answer my question. Weirdness aside, we ordered a table full of appetizers that were pretty decent. What happened next is what cemented this as one of the most off-putting dining experiences I've had. We were sitting outside with our twin infants (4 weeks), and a second server came up to at the end of the meal (had to hail him down since our original server went AWOL). I was calming my fussy boy with some light jiggling and bouncing -- as you do with fussy newborns -- when Server #2 came up to the table and told me I shouldn't be shaking my baby. Since moving to Fort Greene three months ago, I've relied on Sushi D to fulfill my routine cravings for vegetarian Japanese cuisine. And damn, they do a great job! Pros: Fantastic salad dressing (I will nix a Japanese restaurant for low-caliber dressing), the best brown sushi rice I've ever enjoyed (more purple than brown, actually...great texture), a nice variety of creative vegetarian rolls that you don't see at every Japanese spot. And, of course, wonderful servers who are so sweet -- especially to diners (like myself) who are repeat visitors. Cons: Mediocre wine, pithy green salad size compared to what I've seen elsewhere (especially One Greene Japanese, which is mere blocks away). Had a fairly pleasant time here with my gf and a friend on New Year's Eve. We couldnt get into a nearby place as it was booked. The decor and feel of the dining room is very warm and welcoming. Dim lights on the walls and earthy colors surround you. Service was pretty nice too. I wouldnt say out of the ordinary. I do have to say that the manager was always on spot noticing anything that was goin on all over the place. The food was nice and very well seasoned, from the spicy tuna salad to the wasabi sauce steak. All around good food. Only two things made my experience a 3 stars experience and no more. One, i ordered my steak medium rare and it was fairly well done, i didnt want to take it back, but well, it wasnt what i ordered. So, i kindly asked them to have it medium rare... It didnt come back medum rare... but it was at least a bit pink inside. The other issue was the place was either too hot, or too cold... it wouldnt make up its mind. It's not so bland, but not so "WOW" either, it's just nicely decorated. Able to eat in or out. I love that they had flashing lights as part of the decor. Rolls aren't giant, but they're okay. It's the sashimi that wins here. Fish tasted very fresh and melts in your mouth. I THINK they may have forgotten the wasabi, but we didn't needed it. Gyoza was nothing special, but yummy. Prices are fair, but closer to the expensive side. Much to my chagrin, they actually cut the imitation crab in half! The entire roll was basically avocado. Imitation crab is very cheap to buy, I wish I took a picture because it was comical that they cut corners on a $2-$4 a pack retail product. And they bought wholesale. When I tasted it, the texture was soft and not crisp and fresh. I ate two and threw away the rest. It tasted like pre-made store bought sushi. Never again. The Teriyaki was fine. Wow, what a great find in Brooklyn! My sister and I were taking a walk in her area when we came across this restaurant. We were so hungry and absolutely love sushi, so we made our way in and cozied up by the window. The service was fantastic, our waiter and the owner were both so accommodating and sweet. They took interest in satisfying us, checking in on how we liked the food and what not. It has a classy and chic atmosphere with a warm and encapsulating ambiance. For appetizers, we ordered the red tuna tataki in ponzu sauce, soft shell crab salad, and pork buns. If I had to choose only one between the three, I'd go with the soft shell crab salad-- no doubt about it. It was absolutely phenomenal, my mouth is watering as I think of its light batter, soft crunch, and divine red chili dressing. Don't get me wrong, the other two were great as well, just not as mind-blowing. For our mains, we shared a caterpillar roll and the spicy hamachi roll. The caterpillar seems to be one of their more famous options, with its spicy tuna topped with avocado and spicy masago. The spicy hamachi was an interesting pick, and definitely had a spicier kick due to the slices of jalapeno topping off the yellowtail, cilantro, and scallions. Both of these options were great, light, and flavorful. Obviously, they are somewhat spicy too, but there is nothing like a cool Sapporo draft to wash it down. A few months ago, a Sushi D menu was slipped under our door and we decided to give it a try, Many months later, we're still ordering from Sushi D. I've been to Sushi Tatsu once since we started ordering from Sushi D. For us, there's no comparison, Sushi D is it. My father and step mom are devout sushi lovers. When they came down to visit, I took them to Sushi D. Up until this point, I had only ordered takeout, this was my first experience dining in. The gyoza and shumai were on point. The sushi took a little while to come out, but I'm used to this since delivery usually takes 45 minutes and I live in the neighborhood. We ordered a handful of special rolls as well as the regular ones. The presentation was excellent and I don't think there was a single roll that we did not like. Service was great too, we were never left wanting or waiting for anything. Most of all, the prices are reasonable. They come up with some interesting ideas. The sushi is consistently good. The fish is fresh. I have tried a variety of the rolls as well, and I have really enjoyed them. The appetizers are delicious. I have only tried a few of the meals, but they have been good as well. They have a good sake menu. The prices are good, definitely on point for the food. The service is reserved and minimal, but it is kind and it gets the job done. The atmosphere is lovely. The decor is simple, but it's comfortable and it's ever too loud. I live around the corner from this place and was so disappointed. I would love to have a local Sushi place to go to regularly, so I hope the management sees this and can make a few adjustments. We asked to sit outside last night because the weather was great. There was a table just leaving, and the very polite staff rushed over to clean up the table. Instead of cleaning the table with some kind of cleaning solvent, the bus boy poured water from the half-finished water glass from the person who had just left, and barely wiped the table down with a filthy rag, right in front of us. Pretty disgusting. I ordered dumplings as an appetizer and a snow crab tempura roll. The entree came before the appetizer. I was shocked to see that my entree sushi roll consisted of only 4 small pieces of sushi, two of which were artfully if not usefully filled with only crab cartilage, no meat and barely a dab of avocado. It was inedible. And I paid $9.50 for it. The greasy dumplings came fifteen minutes later. Our lovely waiter apologized and was very friendly and helpful throughout, but the food was unacceptable. I left unsatisfied, hungry, and disappointed. Definitely skip this one if you don't want to pay a ton of money for (at best) mediocre food. read more

This is an excellent "neighborhood" restaurant--a pretty good place I eat at a lot because it's within walking distance, but I wouldn't go so far as to recommend going out of your way for it. The sushi here is about where "good" sushi (as opposed to "average" or "acceptable" sushi) starts for me. Have I had better? Sure, but this'll do just fine, particularly since there are surprisingly few Japanese restaurants in the area. I've mostly just had the sushi here, but have also tried the cold soba with tempura (delicious, and a very generous portion) as well as chicken ramen, one of their special items. Let's just say I knew what I was getting into ordering ramen at a sushi restaurant and got exactly what I deserved. Was here for dinner tonight. Everything was excellent. My group shared the vegetable gyoza, age tofu, and nasu (eggplant) for appetizers. All were very good. I also had the kinoko soup, which was a bit bland. I had the tuna lovers roll which was good, not great, the Alaskan roll which was good and a sweet potato tempura roll. All the fish was very fresh and delicious. Service was good but very slow. (One sushi chef was sick). Waiter was friendly and apologetic for the delay.
