Breaded walleye
Darwin G.

You can't go wrong with some fresh walleye that is seasoned really good. The brisket queso was also tasty and great to share. Certainly always has a great atmosphere and plenty of different beers to select from.

One star only because zero is not an option. Blue and I ate here with B & S and it made me Surly! We spent $13 on spinach artichoke dip that was the size 3x5" index card. The pizza were Neapolitan style and had so little cheese I am hard pressed to call it pizza. Yes I expect some char on a wood fire pizza but this char tastes burnt, guys! DO NOT GO HERE FOR THE PIZZA. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

I'm a big fan of this place. I've been only a few times, once to the beer hall, once to the pizza spot, and this week we held a company party in their private event space upstairs. Everything was seamless and professional, organized and helpful. From my very first conversations with the event staff, I was never told "no". They were able to accommodate our needs, timing, food, additional vendor and the event went off without a hitch. We especially enjoyed the roped off area outdoors as we got a perfect weather day for our event. Drink selection was fantastic, appetizers were good, buffet dinner was fabulous, and the staff was top tier. Special shout out to Bri who was incredibly attentive, available and communicative throughout our event. Thank you, thank you. Would recommend over and over.

I have no idea how I haven't reviewed Surly yet!! This is a staple spot for pizza, appetizers, meeting friends/family, an amazing patio in the summertime, and lots of beer options! We came for Mother's Day and they had a build your own bouquet room, as well as a small market with vendors & a DJ. I'm not a huge beer person but I've never been disappointed by something I've tried. Their pizza is woodfired & delicious! Truly a 5/5 for atmosphere, service, and food!

Great beers and our bartender Lucas was very friendly and helpful. Pizza was also delicious.

Service great. Beer variety good. Food ok. Had brisket and barley. Was not super tender but tasted good. A bit chewy though. Barley was nice addition. Hamburger was small for price. French fries ok. Nothing wow.

Wow! What a great way to spend an afternoon! We had kids ranging from 2 to 33 years of age. Killer pizzas great beer and sodas Lots of open space for the kids to play. One issue was the seating and ordering system is kinda chaotic not a lot of border. But love this place!.

Surly just isn't one of my top brewery picks anymore. The main reason I come back is for the outdoor space. But even with that, the food ordering setup is so odd to me and I think it's their biggest flaw. The fact that you can only order from one menu while sitting in a specific area of the brewery, and the other menu is only available upstairs just makes everything more complicated than it should be. We ordered pizza from upstairs, and it was pretty good but we had to get it "to go" so we could bring it down to the grassy area of the patio. Also, I'm all for kids at breweries, but when we went, (Saturday evening) there were so many. I think the big open space makes it kid-friendly, but it also meant they were running around everywhere, some even running across the top of the picnic tables. Not going to lie, it felt a little unhinged, haha.

Spinach artichoke dip and Nakatomi pizza

I've ended up going to Surly's two times in the last two days. It's a very nice vibe. Their patio is so huge! A lot of choice of where to sit. I want to sit in their upstairs bar sometime soon. Their beers are always good and they have a good range of options. You order up at the bar, so pretty limited contact with staff, but my limited interactions were good. I got a good recommendation from them and they let me try multiple beers, so love that. Overall, very nice for a chill drink on a summer night. Updated review: Went back on Saturday and finally got food. We got the Nakatomi pizza, spinach and artichoke dip, and caesar salad. Everything was sooo delicious. Such a good combo and just hit the spot so well. Also! Sat on the upstairs balcony and it was really nice :) But one of my playing cards fell down into the slit between the boards of the patio. Bummed about that, but it was the wind's fault.

The bender
Mark S.

They got my order wrong. Somehow hog frites turned into bib & burrata. It was tasty and I finished it even after discovering there was no hog or frites hiding underneath. Oh, and the bender and coffee bender were excellent

Two years in a row for my birthday we've gone to Dorits Tavern, they make the second floor into a fun rendition of the tavern from the Gremlins movie. The food has been consistently good, the appetizers we had and the pizzas were mostly very good, my son got was not great, it had a very funky taste. The other four pizzas we had were delicious. Our waitperson didn't seem like they wanted to be working... a bummer as our past waitpeople have been great. The beers, we choose those you can only enjoy onsite, were very good. The second floor is decorated like the tavern from the movie and all decked out for the holidays. Very fun atmosphere. It's very loud so be prepared. We played some pinball machines and that was great fun also.

Walter White Pizza
Kristine S.

Surly Brewing came highly recommended by a friend of ours so naturally we planned a visit while in Minneapolis. We took the train from our hotel and after a short walk we arrived at Surly! We tried a couple different brews during our visit including Winterize and Furious IPA. I also had a Jell-O shot because why not. We got lucky with seats at the bar upstairs and ordered 2 pizzas: Walter White - great combination of thinly sliced potato, garlic oil, and rosemary was really interesting and tasty. I'm Your Daddy - my favorite of the two. I love anything with pepperoni. The burnt honey added a lovely sweetness. The pizzas were nicely charred since they are New Haven-style. Great brewery with delicious beer and pizza, friendly bartenders. Indoor and outdoor areas to hang out, fire pits. A little bit of everything! Highly recommend!

Marissa P.

One of my favorite local breweries in Minneapolis! I love their Furious and Hazy IPA -- always solid picks. The pizza is great, and the beer flight is a fun way to try a little of everything. The patio is a huge plus -- super dog-friendly and perfect for nice weather. Such a good spot for both date nights and hanging out with friends. Always a good time here!

Surly Brewing Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Surly Brewing

Do you still have other gluten free options in regard to the other food,?

Yes, lots of gluten free options in the beer hall, a few alternatives in pizza as well. Plenty of options for you to enjoy, including beer and NA items

Do you have gluten free pizza option?

Unfortunately no, because of the heavy gluten environment we don’t have a good way to provide a safe gluten free option.

Do they have both the brunch menu and lunch menu on Sunday?

Gita, We just have the brunch menu, thanks for reaching out!

Can you order pizza from the restaurant or is it a separate dining area?

Upstairs only from what I know

Does Surly serve cocktails or wine?

No only beer

Do you have to be 21 to get food?

No. Restaurant & pizza upstairs is all ages.

Are dogs allowed inside during fall/winter?

No unfortunately--for canine lovers--dogs are not allowed within the beerhall at any time unless they are Service Dogs. Call ahead if you have questions. 763.999.4040 and press 1.

Where do you park?

Hi Parry, We have many parking options including Valet on weekends, a large lot on our property and various other areas at night time by our property! If you are coming for a…

Gluten free options?

They definitely have gluten free food options. In terms of drink I don't believe that have any true gluten free alcohol options. They often have a "gluten reduced" beer but not truly any gluten free beer or cider!

On a Sunday- is the pizza upstairs open? Also, are you only allowed to order off the brunch menu?

Hi, Pizza is open on Sundays from 11am to 9pm. We no longer have a brunch menu on weekends but we do have some dishes on our main Beer Hall menu from it.

Do they have flights available?

No. But they will let you sample whatever you want to try before buying.

Do they have happy hours?

They do not have a hh. Most breweries and tap rooms do not. You are getting the freshest beer you will ever taste. Think of it like a different kind of hh! This is not like going to a bar.…

She then made her rounds around the restaurant, the two hours I was there. I found the presentation completely inappropriate for a restaurant. It felt more like something you would see at a strip club or Vegas nightlife venue than at a restaurant, and it was especially jarring at a 5 PM event. Honestly, I would have found it inappropriate regardless of the time. I'm Latina and all for a good, sexy time. But there is a time and place for everything. Beyond that, the restaurant was extremely crowded and hot, and they were already running out of food. Given the number of people there, the food situation was poorly handled. I also had an issue with my drink charge. It was listed as $9, but I was charged over $11, while my friend was charged only $10 for hers. That inconsistency was frustrating. Unfortunately, between the uncomfortable atmosphere, extreme crowding, heat, lack of food, and billing discrepancy, this was a very disappointing experience. I've since seen other reviews mentioning long waits, and after experiencing the chaos myself, I can understand why.

When my friend and I walked in, we came into a fairly spacious dimly lit space with loads of people inside. We were immediately informed that there would be over 1.5hr wait for a walk-in table. We were given the option to wait for bar seating as it would probably be quicker - and surely, it was. We did have to wait quite a bit, but it was a tolerable amount of time and definitely less than what it would have taken for an actual table. My friend and I decided to share 2 pizza pies as we wanted to get a taste of two different flavors, so we eventually settled on Korean BBQ & Perfect Pickle Pie. KOREAN BBQ As it was created by a Korean chef, it definitely had true authentic Korean flavors. As a Korean myself, I was very familiar with this soy vinaigrette and have tried this on many salad before - so, it was hitting home for me. Also, you can't go wrong with the bulgogi/beef short ribs known to all those who had Korean BBQ before. The combination of the sauces that they use for this pizza is definitely very rich, full of umami. I personally enjoyed it. PERFECT PICKLE PIE This pie was a totally different flavor to the Korean BBQ. It's less rich and maybe can be overpowered or considered more bland compared to other pizza flavors. But when tried together with the BBQ, it balances out the richness of the BBQ with the more subtle/less umami flavors. This pie gives more of a tangy/sour taste that pickles provide and more of a crunch due to the chips that are added on top. The dill is present, but not overpowering. It's a nice low-key kind of taste that people who like pickles will enjoy. Overall, the flavors were very rich in every pizza pie that we had that our mouths were bursting with flavor. It was definitely the most unique pizza toppings that I've had and can see why it's so highly regarded. I can tell that they really are meticulous with their every process and that their pizza guy by the wood fire oven is expertise in what he does. My friend and I walked out quite satisfied and I was honestly more full than I expected.

The food had to be delivered by a lift system (This used to be called a dumb waiter-very unfair to servers who aren't too bright), and the waitstaff was forced to travel four or five floors. I had an email confrontation with the person who sat us. Now our kids have their own kids; we live a few blocks away, not in Seattle, and our return was fantastic! Sanjusan has one bar overlooking the kitchen, one bar for imbibing, and a scattering of tables. We sat at the bar for drinkers, as is our wont. Mikayla and Drayon, our servers and mixologists, made our evening memorable and fun. They had the ability to merge a sophisticated knowledge of dining with the awareness that people also want to have a good time. The food was wonderful. Our unique gyoza was smashing, and we travel all over Japan tasting gyoza wherever we go. Sanjusan's was one of the best. Perfectly prepared al dente, the Mentaiko Lumache pasta tasted sublime and unique. It was out-of-this-world delicious. I also loved the chicken yakitori with the crispy skin. We had a great meal! Prices are high, like everywhere in Minneapolis, but Sanjusan is worth the cash outlay. Since we are close enough to walk to Sanjusan in all kinds of weather, my old and mangled face will be seen often at Sanjusan. I'll arrive early so I don't empty the bar during prime hours. She was so kind and friendly while also giving really great recommendations throughout. Another shout out to the wine selection-the sparkling cava-brut was one of my favorites I've had in a while. We ended up sharing the maitake karaage, the Isaac Becker pizza, and the mentaiko lumache. If you take one thing away from this review, it's ORDER THE ISAAC BECKER. If you're down for seafood, you'll love it. A sourdough crust cooked in the oven with tomato sauce and then fresh ingredients added on top like tuna, cilantro, napa cabbage, and lime; I'm fully serious when I say it has been one of my best bites of the year. It's such a good balance of flavors and we devoured it. We agreed that when we come back in the future, this is a must. Your choice on the lumache and the karaage. The lumache was creamy with a slightly seaweed-esque taste to it which made it stand out and the pasta shape/cook is everything! The karaage was decent but probs our least favorite of the night-not enough sauce to soak up the food. Solid portion size though. All in all what a delight. Thanks Sanjusan for such a great first time here.
