The only reason I am giving this 4 stars is because of the time it took to get boxes and the bill. Food is great, but when you are pressed for time this place is not ideal. The break is delicious. Unlike anything I have had before. It gets pretty busy, so make reservations. Even for lunch. read more

My husband worked at this restaurant for 3 years for Surla. We even had a fairly nice reception there for our wedding. Which was supposed to be fairly cheaper than what he charges non employees but he charged us full price even though we were moving and needed the money. He left us with $ 49.00 to move with out of state. My husband would work even on Mondays when the restaurant was closed he would put in 50 To 60 hours a week and NEVER got a raise, he worked there 3 years. The sou chef Paco Martinez stole his chef knife the day before we moved and treated my husband like garbage the last couple days in California. Also the Sunday brunch every one goes crazy for I just would like everyone to know they accumulate all that food over the course of the week and put it out Sunday so that over priced brunch food is a week old and is already paid for so just a FYI. I gave this place 1 star but I don't believe it should even get that. I used to think very highly of Surla and Paco Martinez but sadly they proved they were not very good business. read more

I was so excited when I heard that John Surla had finally left Galletto's to open up his own space. His food has always been hit or miss. But we all believed that it was because of the budget restraint he was working under. So I was ready for this star to shine. I was very suprised how nice the new space was( The Lounge) It was beautiful and very inviting, then they took us to our table and I felt like I was back in High School eating in a cafateria. Two completely different spaces. It was almost felt like they ran out of money and the restaurant was an after thought. Once we were seated in a near empty cold dining room ( At a small uncomfortable table for two aginst the wall) . Exactly what we expected happened, The just as cold server approached us with attitude, and not happy that we were there, or that she had to wait on us. We ordered two stoli martini's that took almost ten miutes to get. We asked what were the high lights of the menu, her reponse were new so nothing has stood out yet, What would you reccamend, I haven't tasted anything yet. So we asked for a few minutes to enjoy our drinks and look at the menu, Finished our drinks and We never saw our server again. We left $ 20.00 on the table and left. As we walked out no one said a word. Not even a Thank you, Come back, How was everything, But the good news is that I did see my server again yesterday at Safeway so at least I know she is still alive. read more

I have never in my life written a review for a restaurant, but I found that I needed to go through the inconvenience of writing this review to tell others how horrible this place is. I went on Valentine's Day with my girlfriend because it looked like a romantic place, they got the mood and the scenery correct and some of the food was good, but other than that everything else was bad. They started us off with tap water, which for a place that was charging $75 a person for a 5 course meal was very disappointing. Then they gave us bread to accompany the meal, the bread was awful, it wasn't even toasted, it was just soft bread covered with olive oil and way too much salt. Also the whole menu was just a flash card with 3 options on the main course, and that all u had to choose from. The waitress was the worst part, she was rude and gave us really judging looks. She would also bring our courses really fast, like if she was rushing us to leave as soon as possible. Then the first course came, my girlfriend had some raviolis and they were really good. I had gotten a small piece of bread covered in beef and beet sauce. The bread tasted so bad, it tasted like what my dog smells like after I don't wash him in a month. The second course was better, it was a potato soup with bacon bits on top. The thing is my girlfriend was trying to go for all of the vegetarian options and she did tell the waitress before hand. Then the waitress brought both of our soups with bacon and my girlfriend didn't realize until after she had already had some. Luckily my girlfriend isn't vegetarian but this mistake could have happened to someone who was. The third course was a drink, it was apple cider with berries at the bottom, u could see it had been sitting in there for a while because the berries were already disintegrating. At first she had offered us champagne instead of apple cider but she never asked us if we were over 21. But even that was awful, it was way too sweet and the flavor was gross. After this the main course was brought out, I had gotten the steak with mashed potatoes and my girlfriend had gotten the vegetarian lasagna. The steak I got was really good but the lasagna was bad, I tried some and it tasted like microwave lasagna. The dessert was the last course and I got some chocolate mousse thing, and it was good. My girlfriend got the crème brûlée and it was good but the caramelized sugar on top was way too thick and it tasted really burnt. The best part was the water boy, since he kept calling me "sir". Other than that this place was awful, it's overpriced and and most of the food was bad. read more

This is my review for brunch only: I loved it! It is pricey but I am happy to pay if a restaurant will just give me what I want, and Surla's certainly did. It was my first time there. The decor is beautiful, the vibe for brunch is serene and abundant. I'm one of those people who likes a good brunch buffet because I enjoy many little nibbles of a lot of different things. They're not gonna lose any money on me as far as quantity goes. I appreciate their elegant presentation of many small portions of entrée foods, and of course those with larger appetite can take more than one. I must say I was impressed by the young man at the carving station. When I asked him for a sliver of prime rib, he was so adroit with his knife that I actually had to ask for a second sliver! The cold foods and desserts, presented in the bar, are laid out so prettily it made everything even more appetizing. If I had one criticism it would be that there is no place for Surimi in a good restaurant, even though the Ceviche was brightly seasoned with a perfect kiss of Chile. read more

Ok so I called Surla's Suanday morning to ask if reservations were needed and if they had live music. I was told no reservations needed and they have an Ipod. We went to the Surla's and the first thing we were asked was did we have a reservation, and there was a man playing a guitar , live, next to the hostess. Long story short , we were put in a corner and ignored . My husband lifted his empty glass as the waiter had passed three time without looking at us. A young women asked if we were done with the our plates , removed the dirty forks and put them with our clean fork. The next time she walked by she grabbed my desert plate without asking and totally ignored me. So, long story short, you do need to make reservations for sunday brunch, and they do have live music , and the food was not worth the price , and the champaign was cheep and the worst I have ever had. The two stars are for the live music. read more

Sadly, I had an awful experience tonight. In all honesty, it's not always bad and I have enjoyed the Sunday brunch there. But our dinner tonight was truly awful! The place was fairly empty when we arrived (there were only two other tables being served). And yet, we experienced one of the worst services in town: slow, inattentive, and borderline rude--and we were there to celebrate a birthday!! I ordered the "special" (tuna) and some of it was basically inedible (spinach with TOO much salt; and so much horseradish in the mashed potatoes I could barely taste the potatoes!).The serving staff offered to bring me something else, but after waiting for so long for the first dish, we just couldn't stay there anymore. They didn't even offer to comp (or discount) the bad dish--yes, paid full price! Two other dishes in our party were also very disappointing... Definitely not going back there for dinner ever again--certainly not worth the price! read more

Why Yelp doesn't allow a negative, one doesn't understand. When an establishment isn't deserving of even the one star ... I've never experienced anything like this! Two dinner reservations, back to back. One for my party and one for my daughter's prom party. The first night, after being seated for 15 min, our waiter finally took our drink orders. We ordered a bottle of Rombauer, 1 cocktail and water. After waiting patiently and wondering when they were going to take our entree order, he arrives back at our table 30 min later. We told him we had tickets to a show and he checked his watch and says, "Oh, you'll make it." He never came to check on us, I had to flag someone down repeatedly just to ask to refill my water. Mind you, aside from the bar, we were maybe the only one of two tables that were in the area when we were seated. All this and the food was marginal at best. Now, with that being said, there are plenty of establishments that have off nights. So as disappointed as I was, I figured this was one of those nights and gave them the benefit of doubt. Fast forward to the next night, my daughter's prom party of twelve. They arrived at the venue at 7:15 for their 7:30 reservation. At 8:37, my daughter calls me distraught because after questioning the server 3 times, she finally had to go to the kitchen to ask where their food was - being that prom started at 9, only to be told that since the rest of the restaurant has pretty much cleared out, they can now start their food. WHAT? who says that? I sent a message to John and called the establishment immediately. The hostess, Taylor tried to be very accommodating - she would have the manager return my call. It's now 8:52 and my daughter tells me they are leaving. I get a call back immediately following...He tries to make an excuse only to have it backfire. He tells me that the food order wasn't even put into the system until 8:23. To which I replied, "They've been there since 7:15, so where's the disconnect of the hour and ten min?" OOPS!!! I then cover my complaints about the previous night's experience, and turns out he's the one who waited on us!!! If that is how the service starts with management - enough said! After berating, John Surla tells me that he would like to make this up? I ask, "HOW?" It was my daughter's prom? She and her eleven friends went to prom hungry. He would like for me to come down and speak to me personally about this. I own a successful business as well, and in this day and age, customer service is everything. John should have tried to come up with a solution post haste. Instead, he asks me to come by personally so that we can talk about this. Waste more of my valuable time going down there when he can pick up a phone and call? NO thanks, I'd rather spread the word starting with Yelp!!! read more

I went to this restaurant yesterday and was very disappointed, with the attitude of the owner towards his employees. they have great food but it was really disturbing as I watched in astonishment as the owner yelled and cursed at a female employee for someone complaining about her attitude (she seated us and had a warm, welcoming, enthusiastic attitude, I must say.) we listened as he called her multiple derogatory name's and blamed everything bad about the restaurant on her and to top it off, he screamed at her saying that he was docking her pay 6X the price of what the upset customer would have ordered! It was very unprofessional and unsettling to hear such a harsh lashing ! I for one, will never go to this restaurant again due to the owners attitude ! (imagine how he treats his employees when there aren't any customers around !) also we had to watch this poor employee break down in tears as she was told she was an idiot, As*hole ect ! wow. just a horrible experience. the owner should have confronted her elsewhere, not in front of the customers !!! read more
