This was my first time being here and I really enjoyed it. They have a acoustic guitar player who plays all kinds of songs ranging from 80s 90s and now music really different and cool. The food was fresh and delicious so many different choices. The Mongolian barbecue was super yummy. Beautifully decorated great ambience very nice sitdown dinner. We decided to try Surla's today for their Sunday champagne brunch. It was $25 dollars per person with bottomless champagne and if you wanted orange juice or cranberry juice it was $3 dollars each for a 22oz carafe...well worth it. I highly suggest making a reservation as this place was packed and people were standing outside waiting. We had a reservation for 6 and at the last minute another friend joined us and they easily accommodated for 7. The food was delicious! It's buffet style, some of the dishes were: eggs Benedict, very delicious potatoes, scrambled eggs, bacon, house made sausage, fresh fruit, different salads, a crepe station, prime rib station, omelet station, house made sushi, pork fried rice, some sort of a rib, chicken, and endless deserts. Our reservation was at 11am and we left it was 2:30pm or so. They are only open from 10am-2pm and in no way did we feel rushed to leave by 2pm. Our waitress Kat was awesome. At five minutes before 2pm she said it was last call for food. We wanted some more of their potatoes and bacon but they were out. She went to the kitchen and they made us some more! She brought out a huge bowl of potatoes and the rest of the bacon they had on hand. We will definitely be back! read more

We went to brunch at Surla's for the first time today and thoroughly enjoyed it. The champagne flowed freely and our waiter Bryan could not have been better. The food choices were sufficient and everything tasted very good. Other buffet brunches may offer more variety, but given the reasonable price, I thought the selection was good. We just finished a wonderful Sunday brunch at Surlas. There were nine of us including 2 children and a one year old. The staff was amazing tendiing to all our needs. Our server was excellent and were were never wanting for anything. The champagne was refilled often and coffee as well. The brunch was interesting and delicious! Great salads, tri tip, omelets, shrimp, and all the other usual things. in addition, they make their own bagels and the lox was excellent. Just a great selection of things with many yummy desserts. My husband and I have been here a few times, and when Verona's called me 1 week before my daughters bridal shower cancelling my order I called Surla's to see if they might be able to help me out. I knew it being last minute they might not be able to accommodate me, and it might be pricey. Jody called me back and she was extremely friendly, sympathetic to my last minute needs and said they could do it no problem. The price was perfect, no over charging, no extra cost for last minute. We picked up the Grilled Chicken Rigatoni on Sunday just before my daughters shower. It was delicious and a huge hit with our party guests. The fettucini with chicken, sundried tomatoes and cream sauce is AWESOME! And the portion was enormous...enough to stuff myself for dinner and feed my husband the next day for lunch. He said that even reheated the next day it was the best fettucini with cream sauce and chicken he has ever had. And I have to mention how much chicken was included because most restaurants give way too much pasta and not enough chicken and you are left with a bunch of pasta and no chicken half way through. First visit here, so I thought I would share my experience. Loved it! Started here on a girls night out with happy hour before dinner. I had the Moscow Mule which was one of their specials for $5. Actually I had it twice since it was so tastes! Lol! The food choices for happy hour are slim when you don't eat chicken or bread, so we opted for the antipasto board off the appetizers section. This board did not disappoint! Variety of cheeses, olives, marinated mushrooms, almonds and some crostini slices. I'm glad I sampled the almonds before my friend ate them all... They were quite tasty! After we cleared our board of all cheeses, we went to be seated for dinner. It was a Friday night, and they had a guitarist playing live music. He strolled around the restaurant as his music was being piped from the speakers as well. My girlfriend ordered the clam chowder and I got the special braised spare ribs with grilled root vegetables and mashed potatoes. The portions were huge, so we ended up sharing my dish. The meat was tender and quite scrumptious as was the grilled veggies. The waiter even said it wasn't typical for this time of year but regulars had been requesting it. Well, I thank them! It was fabulous and I will definitely order it again! I didn't give 5 because the clam chowder was bland by the clam chowder standards. Overall... I took my BF there for a special Father's day Brunch for $36 per person with complimentary champagne. What a variety of times including BBQ Tri Tip, BBQ salmon, sushi, shrimp, beef, spare ribs, and so much more. The veggie table included fresh peas/lima beans, BBQ asparagus, assort sales, and a cheese platter.The dessert table included chocolate strawberries, little fruit tarts, macadam cookies, eclairs, and little pieces of cake. My experience of Surla's from day one was disappointing. The general manager Gar was completely incompetent, reeked of cigarettes and stale booths. The bar manager Matt was close to non-existant. I witnessed both of these apparent men in a higher position sit around at the bar and at the guests tables, drinking and watching television. Something I never want to see the management doing in an establishment. Most of the staff, were hungover, gave sloppy, inconsistent service and were late to their shifts. In the time I was there, I could of counted at least 15 smoke breaks between the staff. I do not want to smell cigarettes when I am about to enjoy my meal. Looking around the place, although it looks clean to the eye, there were dead bugs lined up across the upper lighting of the bar, the pour spouts of the liquor bottles are covered in mold and not to my surprise after seeing that, the thing anyone would dread in a restaurant, COCKROACHES!!! My interaction with John Surla, the owner, was disappointing. He seems completely complacent form his business and is there to just hang out. As far as cocktails go... how uncreative and lazy to put a tequila sunrise on your cocktail menu. The overall experience felt very amateur and unprofessional from the staff to the food to the drinks. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, yet warn people of the potential health risks they may endure. read more

I've only been to this restaurant once, but I'm going to try it again. For the most part, I had a very good experience. We tried practically every appetizer on the menu. They were all good, but the tuna roll was exceptional; better than most sushi restaurants. Most places that are not focused on Japanese cuisine usually get some part of the roll wrong. Not at Surla's. This Asian fusion restaurant knows sushi. The rice was perfect, the tuna was beautiful and a nice size. It was a big piece of tuna with a little rice (the way I like it). It came with a creamy spice sauce that accompanied the sushi just right. You don't need the soy on the side. It was a little piece of heaven in my mouth. There was also the lumpia dish (which came with what seemed to be a sweet Thai chilli sauce), eggplant dish (which was a distant cousin of Chinese spicy eggplant without the spiciness), and the tempura (lightly tempurad like the Japanese do, but I don't think it was panko, and the onions, the onions, were fantastic). Each appetizer was delicious, but was a bit on the sweet side for my personal taste. However, I do know that the tastes of the local community is a bit sweeter than mine. And each appetizer had its fan at our table. For the main entre, I had the risotto. The risotto changes daily so what I had will probably not be what they are serving today. Mine was with pancetta and bok choy. It was a little too salty for my taste as was the bread. But the basil olive oil dip (that came drizzled on the bread was light had a delectable perfume). I think maybe because I had so many appetizers, that I had my fill of salt, and so I couldn't eat the risotto. But my husband and I had it for lunch the next day, and it was still very good, and didn't seem as salty as it felt the night before. I tried my husband's steak, and it was mouth wateringly tender and perfectly cooked to medium rare. We shared the crème brulee and it was perfect. I like the hard crystallized sugar on top, so the fact that it came in a wide shallow dish meant more crusty sugar to go with every spoonful. We had a birthday girl at our table, and she got a free special birthday dessert. She seemed to enjoy it. The table also got a free amuse bouche, a tomato soup in an espresso cup. It was a nice tart start to the meal. The service was friendly and attentive, but never overbearing. The décor is nice: contemporary and pleasing, with a hint of whimsy. I like the abstract art on the walls (there are so many restaurants that seem to get their art from some massed produced distributor like World Market or Pier One, not this one). However, this restaurant needs some covering on their windows. If you go during a summer afternoon or early evening, be careful. Make sure you get a table that is not affected by the late blinding sun. The color scheme doesn't quite feel like the latest in chic dining, but it's warm and inviting and conducive to a good eating experience. The sign on the outside of the building, however, is totally cool (you got to see it at night when its red back lighting is turned on). Overall, this restaurant is competitive (in its price range) with the higher end restaurants in Modesto. The food is good and there is potential for this restaurant to become even better. It would be nice to always have a good fusion restaurant in this city so I hope this restaurant will survive in the current economy. After all, when your group feels like different things (one wants Asian flavors, another Italian, another traditional American steak) where else can you go but a good fusion restaurant? read more

Went to Syria's for my wedding anniversary last week , so cost was definitely not an issue for that night but I wish it was. +$30 for the Rib eye would be fine if it wasn't as tough as my shoe . I ordered it medium rare and got rare/raw but somehow it was still tough? I question the quality of the cut.
