We ate at Surla's for brunch today. We have been to many events where he has had catered items, but never to the restaurant. Brunch was excellent! The food was delicious! Our glasses were never wanting of champagne and our coffee mugs stayed filled. There was an omelet station and crepes station. There were dozens of items to choose from. Many salad options, fruits, cheeses, a dessert bar and more. We will definitely be returning! read more

Literally the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. It took 40 minutes our party of five to be seated and we had reservations. The service after that was dismal. We were completely ignored by our waiter. I had to go to the bar to get my own drinks. The food was pretty good, but not worth the total lack of service. read more

Very much enjoyed our dinner at Surlas. Great service. Unique offerings. The spinach salad was one of the best I ever tasted. The food is fresh, delicious presented very well. Also recommend the deconstructed beet salad, risotto and the mahi. mmmm good. The chef is excellent as he got me to eat green beans (in the risotto) and enjoy them. Looking at the photos on line, I thought it was going to be something special. The bar is nice, but the interior of the restaurant was pretty plain i felt. The food was pretty good. On a positive note they had a guy playing guitar which was nice. I could go 3 or 4 starts here, but for a restaurant that seems to try and be a fancy restaurant, it doesn't match up with some of the others in town. read more

First time and wanted it to be special for my wife and I and the $150 for two did not scare me too much but way too many other better options for that price. I would not recommend to anyone. It was my first time trying Surla's and my wife really wanted to go somewhere special so we gave it a shot. Ambience, waitress, and hostess were on point but everything else, especially the food was not even close to good - except the salad - that was good. Soup - not sure what was in it but tasted like tomato sauce from a can with some small fragments of cheese and broccoli. Salad- good. Two beets were the bulk of the salad and the look and taste were good. Main courses - scallops over risotto and filet Mignon with mashed potatoes. I have never had a mashed potato in liquid form but that's what it was and it didn't taste very good. The filet Mignon seemed to have been boiled in water and covered in a Mushroom gravy of some sorts. The scallops over risotto was my wife's plate and she wasn't too happy, but it was better than my filet Mignon. Desert - red velvet cake. Cake was good although it tasted very cold and seemed store bought - nothing special. Lastly, a special treat of a a truffle in covered in chili powder. ?? Yeah. First review for me, but I couldn't let this one go... 1 out of 5 stars for me. Sorry. read more

When they increased their corkage fee to $18 a bottle I decided that this restaurant will no longer get me a customer. And I asked them why they increased it they said but they work colluding with other restaurants and matching their prices to be 'good neighbors'. That is price fixing and shame on them. There are three other restaurants outside of downtown Modesto offering no corkage fee and I have eaten there and will continue to do so until Surpass changes this policy and returns to their old corkage fee. read more

I have visited Surla's twice. Once for a baby shower, (they catered), and once for dinner. Both times I was impressed with the friendly and accomodating staff. The food was top notch. I would order Lumpia again and the Korean style BBQ ribs were great! Fish and chips were so so... the fish was a little under cooked so the batter was mushy towards the center, but the fries were delicious and tarter sauce tasted great! They serve tropical iced tea and it was pretty good as well. I'd definitely recommend and will be returning when I want to go have a relaxing dinner at a non-chain restaurant. The only con I had was that a large noisy company party of 20 was set up while we were dining... the group was pretty tipsy and obnoxious and didn't care that there were other diners in the room. Which isn't Surla's fault of course, maybe the winery should have sprung for the banquet room and left the other diners in peace. read more

My husband and I went here for our anniversary dinner because our baby sitter lives in Modesto. We have never been here before and we were pleasantly surprised. We wanted a place that wasn't "family dinning" cause we just got rid of our kids. I guess you could call it fine dinning for Modesto. The cheese platter was amazing and salads were great! My hubby had the sword fish and loved it. There is a $10 corking fee, but if you let your server have a taste, its only $5. We are totally having mom watch the kids again so we can go back. read more

I was really hopeful about this restaurant given Modesto has such few good options for fine dining. Two-thirds of the group I dined with thought their dish was not that great. My expectations weren't met. Given the reviews I was expecting it to be excellent. Perhaps I will give this place a 2nd chance if the opportunity arises, perhaps it was just the dish I had (Chicken Adobo) but every dish should be excellent in my opinion if a restaurant aspires to be classified as such. Great tasting food. People are friendly and place itself is relaxing and nice place for a date with my husband. I thought at first coz i was craving for filipino food so I asked my husband to search if there is any restaurant or any place we can eat that serves Filipino Food and we found Surlas. So we went and gave it a try but a bit disappointed at first when the waiter told us that it's not exactly the Filipino food we are expecting although the Chef is filipino. But when get to eat the food, we got excited on how the food taste like. Bit pricey but I guess it's worth it. Will come back and recommend as well. read more

This is one of my new favorite places! Everything about this place is decadent!! They do t have a huge menu selection, and I kind of like that. The service was the best part. At no point did we have to ask for anything. They were in top of it! John Surla is a fabulous and talented chef and has two excellent restaurants to prove that. We celebrated our daughter turning 30 at Surla's and found the staff very helpful in making all the arrangements prior to the event through all the changes we did. The wait staff was very helpful and polite. While not explictiyl mentioned on the menu, they would prepare vegetarian versions of most of the entrees on the menu. Had Angel Pomodoro with Tofu and the Tofu was diced small and made crisp like I have never had before. The tomoato sauce was lovely. All the other guests had excellent food and well presented. There was a classical guitar player playing softly and that added to the evening's pleasure. This was on a Friday night and we went early, since later on the restaurant got full, but the service did not deteriorate. HIghly recommend this place, and have had the privilege of tasting Chef Surla's food before and each time it was excellent. read more

Went to Surlas on a Saturday evening as a party of four. I phoned in reservations maybe 4 hours earlier then our meal. We tried two appetizers: the lumpia (fantastic) and the chicken lettuce wraps ( maybe a bit sweet for my taste). For entrees we ordered a fish entree (don't recall exactly but the recipient was pleased), tortellini (apparently the sauce was delicious), meat dish believe it was mongolian bbq (decent but that's all), risotto (Amazingly delicious, except for the zucchini which was bittttter!!! I love zucchini so that actually disappointed me quite a bit as everything else about the dish was fantastic.) Beware the risotto is a very generous portion and is exceedingly filling so save yourself the heartache and plan to only eat half there and bring the rest home. Dessert consisted of 1 panna cotta (rather flavorless straight vanilla more like milk rather like a flan), 1 trio of gelato (very tasty), 1 chocolate creme brulee (pretty good), 1 zabaglione (the major flavor was alcohol, yes the waiter did warn me, but I misheard him and thought he said you could barely taste the alcohol. It was my mistake of that I am sure.) The service was very good. My water glass was never empty, our waiter was very forthright when we asked him questions and was that nice mixture of attentive without hovering. We were well looked after and all of the staff we encountered seemed pleasant and eager to ensure we enjoyed our meal. The atmosphere/decor: unimpressive in that it is yet another extablishment with beige walls uncolorful/interesting/ or even attractive "art" in the dining area, but it redeems itself in the fact that I remember Hazel's and this is much more modern then the building used to be. It is obvious that the area was basically stripped and updated in a very bare bones sort of way. Still the tables had four chairs, white table cloths, and we were next to a window. Truthfully that's what matters most. As it stands they only have a four star, because of the novelty of the existence of the risotto and when I go again that novelty will have worn off. I would probably give this restaurant a five star rating if they did a few things. 1)No bitter zucchini. It's disappointing on many levels and degrades the meal severely. 2) Tighten up the dishes they serve to a standard that some dishes set and others fall short of. Otherwise the entire value of the meal goes down. (This is my major concern.) 3) Do something to make me feel less like I'm in a beige beige world. read more

Went for Sunday brunch. All ways wanted to go there. Herd it was better than the late Mallard Sunday brunch. The lines over lap each other and made it a mess to get anything..... the lines wasn't that long but I had to tell people 5 to 7 times where the line started. It was pathetic. When I make it to the food 40% was empty. It was sad .... got to the French Toast and there was no maple syrup. And all the workers was running around try to clean and fix things. So I waited. The 2nd time I went up there was no serving utensils as the lady said there being clean and be back in 2 to 3 mins. And the maple syrup was still out. With a line waiting. So I got a crepe to wait. The 3rd time I went back line was small but 60% of the food was out and still no maple syrup. People couldn't use that much maple syrup in 15 mins with two medium jugs? They never fill them up. It was bad.... and I wasn't happy. There no way this place could be any better than mallards. I miss that place so much. The fruit yard is better than surlas. And I'm not talking about the quantity of food. I'm talking about the quality of service, quality of maintaining food presentation. And when you reserve a table for four at a set time..... you don't have to wait 45 min to sit down at your table. I guess you have to know John or be from the upper class of del Rio to sit at your table when you reserve it. read more

Love love love Surlas! Whether it's appetizers at the bar with my husband for a mid week date or a relaxing brunch with friends or family, I always enjoy myself at this place. The servers rock! Jeremy, Jade and Amanda are the best bartenders in town! The cheese plate is always on point and has a great price. The Sunday brunch was amazing! I sat in the bar area with a girlfriend last Sunday and we loved it. The guitarist was a nice touch too. At some point I would like to sit out on the patio because it seems to have a great vibe too. My favorite part of the brunch though? The tiramisu! It was so delicious I went back for seconds... Shhh don't tell! If you like good food, good service, and a cool vibe, go to Surlas! The only thing they could do to improve is to wd40 the door in the banquet room, I went to a meeting there a couple weeks ago and every time the server came in or out there was a really loud squeak. read more

I went to brunch here about a year ago and I was impressed. However, I went for brunch this morning and I was highly disappointed. The food was not fresh, it had been sitting out for too long. The service was terrible, we were seated in the far back in the banquet room which appeared to be overflow seating, the environment was uninviting. When we arrived, the restaurant was full and the atmosphere was lively. I ordered a Filipino chicken dish and my wife ordered a beet salad, then we waited for almost an hour. When the food arrived, my wife tried hard not to look shocked, but the salad was 5 baby beets with a few arugula leaves strewn about. The menu stated you could add chicken and since she is a vegetarian and had also asked for tofu with the salad. For $6, she got a little bowl of squishy baked tofu pieces that had no sauce, seasoning or flavor (she couldn't even eat it). My chicken looked good, but wasn't very flavorful and was s a small serving that left me hungry. After paying $40 for "appetizers" (our two dinner entrees and water), we had to go eat dinner somewhere else. An incredible waste of time and money. read more

I have heard things about this restaurant, some good some not so good. I attempted to reserve a table for an office party. It was between "safe" Galletto or here. I really wanted to try this place. So, first i called and spoke with John Surla who told me some stuff about having a "greeter" call me back to schedule the reservation. (if i owned a restuarant, i wouldn't be so stuck up to not take my own reservations, but hey i'm not in the food service business). I waited 6 hours, no call back. Then i called two more times and got NO answer. PSSSSHHHH if they dont need my reservation, party of 10, money, or business then i will not give it to them. I am sure Surlas will be like every other new establishment..........it will get ran into the ground. read more

Our first visit was to celebrate a friend's birthday. Result: highly recommend Surla's to anyone who's looking for great food, atmosphere, and service. Also very nice bar area. Dress: semi-casual (our waiter was wearing dark denim). Ordered wedge salad (awesome!), special filet mignon (cooked to perfection!), and the fabulous chocolate lava cake (yum yum!). This was my first time being here and I really enjoyed it. They have a acoustic guitar player who plays all kinds of songs ranging from 80s 90s and now music really different and cool. The food was fresh and delicious so many different choices. The Mongolian barbecue was super yummy. Beautifully decorated great ambience very nice sitdown dinner. It was a little noisy and hard to talk to my date but all in all very nice restaurant especially for Modesto! read more
