The best cheese steak I have ever eaten! I have probably eaten 50 of them in the past 10 years. Whenever I'm in the area, I try to make it there and have another, and wash it down with a birch beer. I have been going here for far too long, probably since middle school. Things haven't changed much at this place, despite businesses coming and going around them. There is still carpet upstairs, and the smell of French fries and sizzling cheesesteaks permeates throughout the restaurant. Hey, want to have the worst sub ever? Try Surf's Up! Ordered from a gaggle of teens who had no idea what was going on and guess what? My order was completely wrong, and really - how hard is a veggie and provolone sub with everything? Apparently too hard for this shop! No tomatoes, no onions, no O&V, and on a stale sub roll with ONE slice of Provolone cheese....and for 8 dollars?? Same as a turkey hoagie? What did I just pay for?? Do yourself a favor and go a block down to Capriottis for a sub, you wont be disappointed. It's been 2 years since I've been back to one of my favorite sub shops (vacationed in Bethany Beach every for 40 years, so I have a long history with Surf's Up-so in love with their subs when they opened) and was surprised by: 1. $39 for 2 large subs (1 steak & 1 turkey) 2. We hadn't ordered a steak sub, it was supposed to be a large provolone cheese sub but the teen taking our order got it wrong and wrote it down as a steak & cheese without cheese, so my vegetarian mom didn't get to eat 3. Turkey sub was a soggfest 2 stars because had we eaten it there, and not picked it up on our way to Rehoboth, we could've had them fix my mom's sub & the roll of the turkey sub likely wouldn't have sogged through but subs are one of those to go lunch items, especially at the beach. Wow. I have been going to Bethany for almost 16 years now and I have never been more disappointed in a restaurant. Grottos was originally where I would go but ever since last summer, Grottos was taken away from the boardwalk. As of 2 summers ago, I would go to Surf's up a little bit more because I started to enjoy the environment, back before the workers were unprofessional. Then also that summer, I realized Surf's up pizza was actually kind of shitty. I then went to Pomodorro's which by the way, is THE BEST pizza in Bethany. If you want cardboard pizza, surf's up is the right place for you! The manager, yes, THE MANAGER, threatened to slap my friend if he came back. This is because he thought my friend had been there in March trashing the place... my friend hasn't been in Bethany for almost a year (last summer.) When my friend was asked to leave, he said yes sir, while wearing a face mask, of course due to Corona. The manager then says "WHAT?" and then my friend repeats yes sir. When my friend returned with his dad the next day, the manager tells his father that he called him a fag***the previous day, when the only words that came from my friend were "yes sir." The day he got harassed by the worker, he had previously ordered a slice of pizza. The one being yelled at, left to bike around, while our other friend waited. The worker told our friend that if that kid came back in the story he would slap him. Unnecessary. The manager, along with the owner, are both DELUSIONAL. The owner agreed with his manager when the kids father told him what happened. What happened to the customer is always right? That is why surf's up is an AWFUL restaurant. this pizza was the worst experience of my life. my two friends and i waited for over an hour for the most undercooked bland and crusty pizza. How could I have missed out on the delight of this place for so long? Oh probably because it looks like a semi-scary dirty little dive but the food is actually great. My turkey sub was amazing. I tore it up. Half a sub was almost enough. The whole thing would have been stomach exploding too much. All of our large party enjoyed their food and some had leftovers for leftovers. The one person who had a slice gave me a bite and it was good. As in beachy pizza good, not wood-fired gourmet good. There's no place in Bethany that holds a closer place to my heart when it comes to childhood memories. It's remained more or less the same since I went to Bethany as a kid. I was looking around for a good steak sub like a dog in heat. Finally, I spotted this little joint that has a sign "best cheese steak" from Washingtonian magazine. The original owner sold the place. It's still around but it's not as good as the original owner. The sub wasn't bad. A small sub 11" is 7.75! It was meaty but no flavor. Lettuce and tomato were sparse. To my knowledge, it's the only place that has good subs. Now, was the Washingtonian correct proclaiming them best cheese steak?!?! 1. About eight teenagers were working the line, and several teens rotated their breaks eating and carrying-on at the front tables the ENTIRE time, with no regard for customers. The front door is where customers receive their first impression of your restaurant as they walk in the door. No adult was visible as we walked in, and was in absentia until we were almost finished with our meal. 2. The female teen taking our order handed our paper cups to us with her fingers hooked inside the cups. We filled our personal refillable containers with water instead. 3. We looked for a clean spot to sit down. I walked to the counter-area and waited to be acknowledged. A young male teen looked at me standing there and said nothing. I finally asked if somebody would hand me a clean towel for me to wipe down the table. He said somebody would wipe it for me. I watched a girl (Savannah? - blond, petite, black glasses, white shell necklace, green and yellow triangle earrings, jean shorts, white Vans high tops, Clemson sweatshirt) disappear into the kitchen for a while. I walked to my table to wait for her. I watched her walk the other way. Confused, I walked back to the counter and noticed there were stairs. Is this where she disappeared to, thinking my table was upstairs for some reason?? I didn't even know there was additional seating, as there was no sign indicating this. I wait for Savannah. She comes back down and takes her spot in the sandwich line. I say again, I need my table wiped please. The male teen says, we'll do that for you. Savannah gets all huffy and walks to the sink. I see her wet a towel (no soap?) and walk to an empty random table and wipe it. I say, we're sitting over there (point to our table). Savannah huffs and puffs, wipes the table, while leaving food remains on the table. I ask her to wipe the chairs (that are covered in sauce). Savannah rolls her eyes and wipes the chairs with disgust on her face. She walks away without any acknowledgement or words. Why could this employee not communicate with her customer and ask where we were even sitting?? And why was this such an awful request that she was so disgusted by cleaning this dirty restaurant so that we may actually sit on a chair without getting sauce on our clothing? Weird. 4. There was a constant influx of teenagers (including Savannah) eating (on break? ... for 30+ minutes?) in the front where we were dining. One male teen commented loudly (I was wearing earplugs and could still hear their conversations) that there was a demonic comic book or some magazine with a woman with her legs spread. This other kid Mark/Mike? (brown hair, blue eyes, long nose, army-patterned sneakers) was seen and heard engaging in these coarse, obnoxious conversations right next to our table. 5. There were loud booming thuds coming from upstairs. We had no idea what was going on. My spouse said somebody went upstairs. I asked, "An adult"???? I look at the counter and for the first time in approximately 40+ minutes since we arrived did I see somebody (40ish) that was not younger than 18. I heard, from all the way in front, this adult ask, "What's wrong, Savannah"? ... Yeah, what's wrong, Savannah?? 6. The small pizza took about 20+ minutes. It was served in a large cardboard box instead of on a pizza plate, and we were eating in-house. There was no seasoning in either the crust or the sauce, meaning there was no taste to this pizza. The sauce was from a can. I am sure the cheapest ingredients were used for this creation. They charged us $15.95 for a small original pizza. Looking at their comments, nobody at Surf's Up reads these reviews. I wish they did. The disgusting attitudes and behavior of the employees we suffered is unacceptable. The food is mediocre. Health code violations abound. There are no gluten-free options. I would wager the soda fountain is grimy inside. There are no clean tables, even after the table is supposedly "wiped-down" by an astounding employee. (Insert raucous applause). Trash litters the floors. Owners, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves and of your employees. Get your restaurant cleaned-up. There ought to be a health-code inspection conducted immediately, and child-services called. read more

Top notch hoagies! The right kind of bread, best quality meats, fresh toppings. I'd give them 4.5 stars except you can get equally good hoagies at Al Casapulla's a few miles away on Rt 26 in a sit down restaurant with some ambiance. Great Cheesesteaks and Subs/Hoagies, I've been coming here for years and it never disappoints. I miss it over the winter when I can't get my fix. Subs are huge, meats are terrific, and the rolls (a critical but often overlooked component) are fantastic. I usually get the Cheesesteak or the Turkey, but the Italian is also great. I am from Philly, and I admit, I am a bit of a cheesesteak snob... so.... other people may be impressed by the cheesesteaks here... The only thing I really liked about this place is the meat on the cheesesteak is actually QUALITY MEAT. It's hard to find that in a cheesesteak. But, the steak has no taste. The cheese didn't really melt all up in it and combine well at all. - Not impressed by anything else. - Place is kinda dumpy looking. - Pizza is terrible. - Free refills on sodas, but "no free water cups"... $10 steak should entitle me to some water. - Bread rolls need work... I've been coming to Bethany for 30 years now and this is the #1 fix I always make sure to get in during my trip. While their pizza is just okay, it is ALL about their subs. My favorites are their cheesesteaks, turkey subs, and Italian subs. They can do different toppings for each half of a sub if you're splitting with someone. Their subs are on the pricey side but they are huuuge so they're great to split or save for leftovers. They have sweet peppers and birch beer too, which to me are local DE delicacies that are tricky to find in DC. I actually really enjoy their fries as well, despite DB's Fries being next door. But I can't recommend their cheesesteaks enough -- they're my favorite in the whole world :) If you want the real Bethany experience, you should grab one at this local institution. read more

4 1/2 stars is what I would rate it. (Need more cheese on the cheesestakes) We ate here twice while at Bethany. First time we had pizza, chicken nuggets and fries. They even made the pizza half cheese and have white pizza to satisfy all my picky eaters. This was a 5 star visit. Second visit we had the same , but added a few cheesestakes. First off, great cheesesteaks so let's get that out of the way. They are creamy and delicious on their bread. That being said when you are at the beach you just don't want any hassles. There were a couple of things that caused me issues. First at the beach it's hot. I have 2 kids and they wanted water. You'd think after spending $30 you could get a water cup but no I was forced to buy bottled water for $2. That rubs me the wrong way. Second, for cheesesteaks and fries you need ketchup and with 2 crazy kids the last thing I want to do is spend time opening packets. Charge me more and let me waste ketchup. The hours say they're open until 9 pm, but two evenings in a row the week following the Fourth and we've been unable to get anything but a slice at 8:30 and 8 pm. This is high season. The subs at Surfs Up are fantastic. The pizza is good but not great. I prefer the cheesesteak and Italian. The bread makes the subs great. Legend has it that Surfs Up gets their bread daily from a bakery in Philadelphia. I don't no if that is true, but it sure has that original Philly taste. read more

The food is good...but this last experience is based on the feeling of the place this year. OMG-Dudes clean up the attitudes and CLEAN UP THE STORE! People eat in there! Where I come from a pizza steak has mozzarella that melts as the sandwich gets finished in the pizza oven. Get it? Pizza Steak: crispy crust, melted baked cheese on top. Tried a cheese and mushroom pizza. It was okay, to me there was not enough cheese or sauce. The mushroom pizza seemed to have the mushrooms thrown on top at the last minute and wasn't cooked into the pizza at all. People seem to rave about their cheese steaks. IMO they are decent but nothing spectacular. But for Bethany they are are good. I prefer Louie's in Rehoboth. Recently, I have seen this start to go down hill. We were in this weekend and the place was disgusting. Believe me I understand it is mostly a to go restaurant at the beach however it was gross. There was trash on the floor, the tables were dirty and the counter / glass sneeze guards were not clean. The service has also gone down hill. They acted as if it was a hassle fro me to pick p the pizza and cheese steak that I paid $32 for. The cheesesteak was good and the pizza was just okay (undercooked). This dive once had good cheesesteaks, but I will never spend another penny there, nor do I recommend anyone to, due to the outrageous treatment of me by the owner after a simple request to toast my bun for the sub, which is otherwise doughy. Further, the tomatoes have been invariably unripe, and I always had to request extra sauteed onions; he doesn't even know how to shred lettuce for a sub, skimping on ingredients all the while. The owner went out of his way in front of all his customers to chastise me for the toasted bun request. He raised his voice to an unreasonable decibel and ranted on and on about never toasting buns. What he should've said is he has no business being in the business of customer service. The only reason this place remains in existence is due to the proximity of the location to the beach and steak sub monopoly that keep customers coming back. I would rather drive the distance and get a better sub at DiFebos, Al Casapullo, a greasy burger at McDonalds or starve than ever step foot in there again. Went for the first time today. Only tried the pizza which wasn't great but decent. Service was quick and the place was clean. One odd thing I noticed was one of the employees running his hands over and over through the shredded cheese for the pizzas. Didn't seem like the most sanitary thing to be doing. Would like another option for the subs other than the "small" which is 11". A 6" sub would be greatly appreciated. read more
