Went to the Surf Shack strictly to see a band that was playing that weekday evening ( Tuesday ). Immediately found seating and with ample time before the band started playing went to the bar for drinks. Although the beer selection was extremely limited ( all canned beer BTW) the specialty drinks were very good ( recommend the blackberry vodka lemonade). Bartenders are friendly and attentive but slightly overwhelmed ( may be a staffing issue many establishments are facing). Taking a chance on food ( based on some earlier comments from friends and Yelpers) tried the chicken tenders and lobster roll. I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised tenders were crunchy and the lobster was generously portioned and very good. The fries aren't Mickie D's fries but decent. Food ordering is done at the kitchen window with a beeper notification system. There are folks roaming about the seating area cleaning tables so one can focus on listening to the live music. Ample parking although the lot fills up fast especially with all the volleyball games being played on the beach . However there's a small dirt area thats available to Surf Shack customers located on the right when you enter the lot. We went on a Sunday at 2:50 pm. When we came into the beach we asked two hour restaurant parking so it was free. We got seated by 3 pm. We ordered fish & chips, 2 burgers, and 2 chicken tenders all with truffle fries. For drinks we got mango and strawberry margaritas and sodas. Drinks came out right away but for the food we had to wait a bit but we did not mind at all. The waitress kept on coming and letting us know the kitchen was working on our order. When the food arrived it was nice and hot. But husband loved his fish and chips. My burger was cooked perfect and was juicy. Kids loved their chicken tenders. I'd avoided this place over the past few years with stories heard about the food- I am happy I waited because the new chef has really stepped it up. We decided to eat here after a weekday splash park day. We have never eaten at TOBAY so we decided to stop at the Surf Shack. It was a Tuesday afternoon and it was not too crowded. There was no actual hostess during the day so everyone who was awaiting to sit was a bit confused if we could self seat or wait. A waiter would come by and say someone would be with us and we were eventually seated. The prices were expected for a beachside restaurant. We were informed of the taco specials for Tuesday and got one of each - shrimp, pulled pork, fish. Each platter included 3 tacos and they were decent size. The food was pretty average for the price. The staff seemed very overwhelmed and it was a bit disorganized so I wouldn't probably dine here when it's busy. We dined with our 1 year old and they had high chairs and kids menus as well. She just ate off our tacos and enjoyed them as well. The ambiance was nice. It seems like there are live music nights as well so definitely check the schedule. It was somewhat of a surprise to find this place in TOBAY. I realize I have not done enough homework at all the restaurants and bars right on the beach in TOBAY. Still, it is always a pleasant discovery to come across a spot with a sizable, seated bar area right on the sand. Sun, fun, and good drinks, which is what I call it. Surf Shack is a beachside bar and restaurant that offers a menu featuring items like lobster rolls, along with live entertainment. However, when I was there, there was no live music. Luckily, the neighboring Boat Yard had live entertainment that you can overhear, adding to the lively beachside vibe. The bar service was a bit slow, but that is understandable given it was busy. They also manage the outdoor dining area, which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. I was there simply to unwind, soaking in the beautiful scenery, the beach, and enjoying a few cocktails. The Surf Shack at Tobay Beach is the perfect spot for a beach day bite! I want to give it 3.5 stars! Parking for the restaurant is free but not if you want to spend the day at the beach too! You can't go wrong with the lobster roll -- served hot or cold depending on your mood, and it's so fresh and delicious. I love that they serve brunch daily until 2pm, which makes it easy to stop by whether you're grabbing a late breakfast or lunch. The casual, beachside vibe makes it the ideal place to relax, enjoy good food, and soak in the ocean views. Definitely a go-to when spending the day at the beach. Wow. A lot has changed here over the years. Havent been in a few and since i live nearby, thought i would give it another shot. This is a very busy and popular spot inside of the tobay beach. The bar area is amazing with great service and food. Happy hour is a must. What blew me away the most was how reasonable the prices were for it beeing a seasonal spot and the quality of food they serve. Portions were big and the food was fresh and delicious. Hot tip: pineapple guac with chips is a game changer. Couple of notes: parking for non tob residents is free only after 5pm. If there is a show at jones beach theater, 4-7pm it is nuts for the pre game if its an older crowd show. Bottom line, Surf Shack is a great spot on Ocean Parkway / Tobay Beach that shouldnt be overlooked. A great outdoor beach bar and restaurant. read more

The lobster roll had some pieces of lobster shell the Connecticut lobster roll was very buttery. The breakfast burrito weigh about 10 pounds Way too many potatoes inside and the place is not cheap but sure as hell beats going to the salt shack at least they give you free parking at the surf shack. Growing up on the N. Shore on LI, in the town of Huntington, Tobay Beach was not really on our radar, though we did frequent the beautiful Robert Moses just "up the road." (NEVER will understand WHY beaches need to be so.... "EXCLUSIVE," esp. when the SAME WATER is 2 min. up the road!!) Though it's a Town of Oyster Bay beach during the day, we lucky out of town "invaders" are lucky enough to be able to come in, enjoy both the beach and the calmer bay (?) catch free concerts, AND enjoy this SURPRISINGLY good "al fresco" dining option as well... SCORE!! I had my doubts about this "Margaritaville-esque" spot, wondering if it might be perpetually busy just because of its primo location, and every single time we've tried to eat here in the past, there's always been a HUGE wait, but on a recent Sunday evening, we decided to wait it out (were told approx. 45 minutes at about 7pm) and enjoyed the sunset and tunes wafting our way from the concert. My sister went and checked at about 20 minutes (we LI'ers always take that chance!!) and found that the high top tables had no wait (!!) so we were seated early!! Give that a try if you've got a long wait!! Table was fine, service was GREAT, and the menu went from basic "beach/bar fare" to some really interesting options. They were "out" of fish and chips (?!?) my first choice, and I'm soooooo happy they were, because what I **did** wind up ordering was WONDERFUL!! We had a disappointing experience at the Surf Shack recently. Our party of 6 adults, a 5-year-old, a toddler, and an infant were looking forward to a meal together, but we were met with resistance from the manager when we asked for a larger table. They wanted to sit our party at a picnic table with low benches. Despite there being empty tables available, and explaining we had two adults with physical disabilities we were told that they could not accommodate us because we needed two high chairs. We explained that our 5-year-old niece does not use a high chair and is able to sit in a regular chair, but the "manager" was unwilling to accommodate . We were left feeling frustrated and unwelcome. It's a shame that our family outing was marred by such inflexibility. We requested to speak to a GM but were told there are no higher management available. When we requested contact information for upper management we were told that they were not allowed to give out that number. The young manager Sidney handled the situation very poorly and requires training to better serve in her role as leadership and deescalation. Sidney's customer service and managerial skills were highly inept. We were trying to understand the reasoning behind why we were not being accommodated but there was no rational explanation. Although Sidney did give a piece of her résumé saying "I know look I young, but I know what I'm doing". Horrible experience before we even sat down. The Surf Shack let at least $250+ just walk out. Hopefully we have a better experience in the future and these young ladies are trained how to properly perform their profession in customer service and satisfaction. The lack of customer service left a sour taste in our mouths. We hope that in the future, the staff will be more accommodating to families with young children. Until then, we will be taking our business elsewhere. read more

Today's lunch at Surf Shack exceeded any expectations. All we really wanted was a cocktail overlooking the Great South Bay. But I couldn't resist the Mahi Tacos, and this was an excellent choice, spiced to perfection with a hint of sweetness, And the grilled chicken over a salad was also a great choice. The staff and bartenders were all very friendly and the drinks were delicious. It took us a while to get a table (no reservations accepted either), but once we sat we were immediately greeted by our waiter and the service was immaculate. The seared tuna entree that I had was really good, and in fact, all of the food we ordered was... The only real negative about this place are the bathrooms, which isn't really their fault. The Tobay Beach crowd is a captive audience and is stuck with one of two choices when it comes to food and drink. This is one of them. Island Time Surf Shack is an appropriate name for the level of service. To cut them some slack, the staff is very nice but definitely more interested in socializing with each other than serving. Drinks are expensive but good. Food is decent overall with surprisingly good crab cakes. It's not about IF you come here since you don't have much choice if you are thirsty/ hungry when you frequent Tobay Beach so just pack your patience along with your flip flops. read more

(Weather permitting) There's many options for food from indoor to outside. The indoor seating was a bit messy and scattered. Looked dirty in my opinion. All orders are separate so you need to pay and wait if you want things from different spots. That's kinda annoying. Pizza and bar food inside, tacos and guacamole at one spot, power bowls, salads at another and then a third offering more options outside. The crab cakes are my favorite and they legit have the best chicken fingers ever. The lobster roll was good but it was better the first time I tried it. My only complaint is that the tostada for the ceviche was stale because it was a little soft but the ceviche itself was good. It's a seafood ceviche so it has shrimp, mussels, oysters. My friend had the ribs and she loved it. The drinks are really good too. They make great frozen drinks. The service was good and the staff is friendly. I sat at the Bar in the 1st seat next to the Servers station. Ordered drink, appetizer & main course all at once. Drink came out immediately. Around 15 minutes later appetizer arrived and I asked for another drink. It never came even after asking 3x (Mind you the Bar crowd was slim. There was no standing only behind the patrons sitting at the Bar). Main course still wasn't out 30 minutes later. O heard my Bartender ask the server to go find my order. He never came back with a reply. Approximately 40 minutes later I'm still sitting there(still without a drink) and the Bartender says "Did you get your food yet". I said no food- bo drink. So I got my 2nd drink and Bartenter tells server to find my food. My seared Tuna came out ice cold(which means it was ready 40 minutes ago). I was starving so I didn't say a word to Bartender(nor did he ask). I finished my meal and after asking for a check it took 15 minutes for it to arrive. Left ZERO tip which has never happened!!!
