This place is a whole vibe and I'm so happy my friends suggested it. I'd avoided this place over the past few years with stories heard about the food- I am happy I waited because the new chef has really stepped it up. The short rib and the lobster rolls were excellent - hot and tasty!! The drinks are potent and the bartenders really keep the vibes going. The music played really transports you to another place- totally Caribbean/Mexican seaside. Between the food and the vibes, I never expected to have a sunset that took my breath away as well. They'll have to tear me away from this place this summer! I even bought the sweatshirt

The Surf Shack was the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon with my husband. You simply can't beat the beachfront setting. Great views, ocean breezes, and a laid back atmosphere instantly put you in vacation mode. Everything we ordered was delicious. We started with chips and guacamole and wings, both of which were fresh and flavorful. The lobster roll was packed with lobster and paired perfectly with crispy fries, and the lobster mac and cheese was rich, cheesy, and loaded with generous chunks of lobster. The drinks were equally impressive. Ice cold, refreshing, and definitely strong enough to make you feel like you're on vacation. Exactly what you want while relaxing by the beach. The service was prompt, friendly, and attentive throughout our visit, even during a busy afternoon. Between the food, drinks, service, and beautiful location, The Surf Shack delivered on every level. We'll absolutely be back for another beach day and lunch date. Highly recommend if you're looking for great food, strong cocktails, and a fun waterfront atmosphere.

We decided to eat here after a weekday splash park day. We have never eaten at TOBAY so we decided to stop at the Surf Shack. It was a Tuesday afternoon and it was not too crowded. There was no actual hostess during the day so everyone who was awaiting to sit was a bit confused if we could self seat or wait. A waiter would come by and say someone would be with us and we were eventually seated. The prices were expected for a beachside restaurant. We were informed of the taco specials for Tuesday and got one of each - shrimp, pulled pork, fish. Each platter included 3 tacos and they were decent size. The food was pretty average for the price. The staff seemed very overwhelmed and it was a bit disorganized so I wouldn't probably dine here when it's busy. We dined with our 1 year old and they had high chairs and kids menus as well. She just ate off our tacos and enjoyed them as well. The ambiance was nice. It seems like there are live music nights as well so definitely check the schedule. There is bar seating as well.

Empty tables for 2 hours never filled meanwhile 2 hour wait.. smh!

Came for dinner before a band was playing on a Saturday night. The food was much better than expected, our group ordered the calamari, mussels, empanadas, buffalo wings, ahi tuna, and the burger. Food came out quickly for a Saturday night, hot and fresh. Ambiance was good and our waitress was excellent. However, checked in for a table was told a 2 hour wait meanwhile there were empty tables all over the place. The host told us the empty tables were called and they were giving them a 10 min window to come for the table. We sat at a high table saw one that was opened. The young host was in over her head, many tables empty and had no clue what she was doing. PS the open tables I saw were never filled the whole night. Poorly run, bus boys and waitresses walking around doing nothing. Need management to step in.

It was somewhat of a surprise to find this place in TOBAY. I realize I have not done enough homework at all the restaurants and bars right on the beach in TOBAY. Still, it is always a pleasant discovery to come across a spot with a sizable, seated bar area right on the sand. Sun, fun, and good drinks, which is what I call it. Surf Shack is a beachside bar and restaurant that offers a menu featuring items like lobster rolls, along with live entertainment. However, when I was there, there was no live music. Luckily, the neighboring Boat Yard had live entertainment that you can overhear, adding to the lively beachside vibe. The bar service was a bit slow, but that is understandable given it was busy. They also manage the outdoor dining area, which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. I was there simply to unwind, soaking in the beautiful scenery, the beach, and enjoying a few cocktails. I decided to pass on eating at this time, but the place has its charm for a casual, beachside hangout.

The Surf Shack at Tobay Beach is the perfect spot for a beach day bite! I want to give it 3.5 stars! Parking for the restaurant is free but not if you want to spend the day at the beach too! You can't go wrong with the lobster roll -- served hot or cold depending on your mood, and it's so fresh and delicious. I love that they serve brunch daily until 2pm, which makes it easy to stop by whether you're grabbing a late breakfast or lunch. The casual, beachside vibe makes it the ideal place to relax, enjoy good food, and soak in the ocean views. Definitely a go-to when spending the day at the beach. If you take a walk they also have a memorial for those who passed on 9/11 that lived on LI. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive too which was a plus!

Decent food. Was a very long wait for food to come out though. Everything seemed fresh. Would like to return for one of their theme events.

Hey fellow beach goers, surfs up at the Surf Shack on the bay side at Tobay Beach on Ocean Drive. Make your reservation and sit on the beach and watch the sunset then go and enjoy your meal. Service was good thanks ( Juan). A hiccup with my food ordered the Fish and Chips all breadcrumb, hardly any fish and burnt, they credited my bill. All others Mac and Cheese and Salmon were delicious and the calamari appetizer. CIAO FOR NOW

Wow. A lot has changed here over the years. Havent been in a few and since i live nearby, thought i would give it another shot. This is a very busy and popular spot inside of the tobay beach. The bar area is amazing with great service and food. Happy hour is a must. What blew me away the most was how reasonable the prices were for it beeing a seasonal spot and the quality of food they serve. Portions were big and the food was fresh and delicious. Hot tip: pineapple guac with chips is a game changer. Couple of notes: parking for non tob residents is free only after 5pm. If there is a show at jones beach theater, 4-7pm it is nuts for the pre game if its an older crowd show. Bottom line, Surf Shack is a great spot on Ocean Parkway / Tobay Beach that shouldnt be overlooked. A great outdoor beach bar and restaurant.

The breakfast burrito not only have potatoes inside, but also on the outside it weighed about 10 pounds almost as heavy as a baby

Usually, any establishment on Long Island that seasonal hires seasonal help which is understandable surf shack is no exception service was slow. The food is mediocre, but the view is nice. The lobster roll had some pieces of lobster shell the Connecticut lobster roll was very buttery. The breakfast burrito weigh about 10 pounds Way too many potatoes inside and the place is not cheap but sure as hell beats going to the salt shack at least they give you free parking at the surf shack. Where at the salt shack they charge $40 just to get into the parking lot. Have a great rest of the summer

Growing up on the N. Shore on LI, in the town of Huntington, Tobay Beach was not really on our radar, though we did frequent the beautiful Robert Moses just "up the road." (NEVER will understand WHY beaches need to be so.... "EXCLUSIVE," esp. when the SAME WATER is 2 min. up the road!!) Though it's a Town of Oyster Bay beach during the day, we lucky out of town "invaders" are lucky enough to be able to come in, enjoy both the beach and the calmer bay (?) catch free concerts, AND enjoy this SURPRISINGLY good "al fresco" dining option as well... SCORE!! I had my doubts about this "Margaritaville-esque" spot, wondering if it might be perpetually busy just because of its primo location, and every single time we've tried to eat here in the past, there's always been a HUGE wait, but on a recent Sunday evening, we decided to wait it out (were told approx. 45 minutes at about 7pm) and enjoyed the sunset and tunes wafting our way from the concert. My sister went and checked at about 20 minutes (we LI'ers always take that chance!!) and found that the high top tables had no wait (!!) so we were seated early!! Give that a try if you've got a long wait!! Table was fine, service was GREAT, and the menu went from basic "beach/bar fare" to some really interesting options. They were "out" of fish and chips (?!?) my first choice, and I'm soooooo happy they were, because what I **did** wind up ordering was WONDERFUL!! The tomato watermelon salad, with just about the best, freshest salmon I've ever had added on, was WONDERFUL, and sorry, I'm STEALING their idea, if not the authentic recipe, to try at home!! Lots of tempting apps, entrees, cocktail choices, and even a few tropical desserts to try. My sister and her BF got the salmon entree and were WISHING they got my salad instead. GREAT spot for summer sunset dining. Expect a wait, but it'll be worth it!! ENJOY!!

This place is on the side of the bay, the scenery is great, at least I liked it, the service was very good, from the moment the hostess greets you till the time you meet your server, friendly and helpful staff. The food was pretty good. We had the coconut shrimp and the lobster tacos, and they didn't disappoint, I will definitely come back .

Ask the Community - Surf Shack

Does the restaurant have live music?

I do believe they have music, I think that you would have to check on their website since I don't think its a daily thing.

Do you have to be a resident of this town to have lunch here? Also Do they take walk ins for a weekday lunch or do need reservation?

No. You tell them at the booth that you're going to the restaurants and they'll tell you to park to the left. They take walk ins.

Heard the guy next to us order a French dip and the waiter said great, we have only 2 left. So when he came to us I ordered and he said great timing it's the last one. Took 45 minutes to get our strawberry salad which was delicious. Another 3o minutes go by (and the guy next to me who ordered the other French dip had already finished and left) So the strawberry waiter, after more than 1.15hr walk over and says "hey, we ran out of the French so I ordered you the steak sandwich. Huh? 1 hour and fifteen min later you ran out and the other guy already ate and left? I said great, but I'm not paying for it. 10 min later the owner came out. He could not have been a friendlier, responsible and all around nice person. It wasn't that he not only covered my meal but the table but it was the way he handled it. Owning a restaurant is not easy and problems happen. Food - 8/10 Prices 9/10 Place 8/10 I would not only recommend this place but they have absolutely earned my business. I obviously can't give a 5 because of the incident but I will change this to a 5 when I go back and get the service I have a feeling I'll receive. I'll work back with this!! I ordered the bone marrow fries and the crab and scallop ricotta croquette pappardelle. I received a huge dish of bone marrow fries and immediately knew that it was too much for me to consume in this setting. The bone marrow fries were not too bad a little salty in some areas. The crab and scallop pappardelle & ricotta croquette and pappardelle pasta was okay as well. This dish was soothing and not too harsh for my stomach and offered a mild flavor. So when I walked in with my casual attire "all eyes on me" as I stood there to wait for an employee to approach me because I didn't know the procedures, whether I should just grab a seat or not. A Caucasian couple walked in behind me as I was waiting and came and stood in front of me. The guy behind the bar comes around gives them a seat and stood by me asking how can he help me. After I told him my business there he told me to have a seat. I recognize Mike and introduced myself. He welcome me back and tension was lifted a little but all the while I was there it was awkward for a brown person to sit alone and dine in. Interaction from the staff just felt forced. I wasn't expected preferential treatment just equal treatment. Normally I'd walk out just like the 6 people that came in and walked out while I was sitting. I really want to give 3 stars but I will let the consistency of 4 to 5 stars continue. Although there are two ratings lower than 3 stars. There were only two other tables occupied at that time and a few ppl at the bar. First impression, a nice cozy restaurant full of bold colorful decor, nice sized bar, maybe 5-6 sections in total. Drinks: the passion fruit margarita was amazing! I love that they used fresh fruit in the drink. My father enjoyed a coconut drink and sister had a spicy margarita. Dinner: I ordered the passion fruit (wild caught) salmon served over shredded collard greens & yucca mash (small portion but full of flavor sorry forgot to take photo).
