The Surf Shack at Tobay Beach is the perfect spot for a beach day bite! I want to give it 3.5 stars! Parking for the restaurant is free but not if you want to spend the day at the beach too! You can't go wrong with the lobster roll -- served hot or cold depending on your mood, and it's so fresh and delicious. I love that they serve brunch daily until 2pm, which makes it easy to stop by whether you're grabbing a late breakfast or lunch. The casual, beachside vibe makes it the ideal place to relax, enjoy good food, and soak in the ocean views. Definitely a go-to when spending the day at the beach. If you take a walk they also have a memorial for those who passed on 9/11 that lived on LI. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive too which was a plus!

Decent food. Was a very long wait for food to come out though. Everything seemed fresh. Would like to return for one of their theme events.

Hey fellow beach goers, surfs up at the Surf Shack on the bay side at Tobay Beach on Ocean Drive. Make your reservation and sit on the beach and watch the sunset then go and enjoy your meal. Service was good thanks ( Juan). A hiccup with my food ordered the Fish and Chips all breadcrumb, hardly any fish and burnt, they credited my bill. All others Mac and Cheese and Salmon were delicious and the calamari appetizer. CIAO FOR NOW

Wow. A lot has changed here over the years. Havent been in a few and since i live nearby, thought i would give it another shot. This is a very busy and popular spot inside of the tobay beach. The bar area is amazing with great service and food. Happy hour is a must. What blew me away the most was how reasonable the prices were for it beeing a seasonal spot and the quality of food they serve. Portions were big and the food was fresh and delicious. Hot tip: pineapple guac with chips is a game changer. Couple of notes: parking for non tob residents is free only after 5pm. If there is a show at jones beach theater, 4-7pm it is nuts for the pre game if its an older crowd show. Bottom line, Surf Shack is a great spot on Ocean Parkway / Tobay Beach that shouldnt be overlooked. A great outdoor beach bar and restaurant.

The breakfast burrito not only have potatoes inside, but also on the outside it weighed about 10 pounds almost as heavy as a baby

Usually, any establishment on Long Island that seasonal hires seasonal help which is understandable surf shack is no exception service was slow. The food is mediocre, but the view is nice. The lobster roll had some pieces of lobster shell the Connecticut lobster roll was very buttery. The breakfast burrito weigh about 10 pounds Way too many potatoes inside and the place is not cheap but sure as hell beats going to the salt shack at least they give you free parking at the surf shack. Where at the salt shack they charge $40 just to get into the parking lot. Have a great rest of the summer

Growing up on the N. Shore on LI, in the town of Huntington, Tobay Beach was not really on our radar, though we did frequent the beautiful Robert Moses just "up the road." (NEVER will understand WHY beaches need to be so.... "EXCLUSIVE," esp. when the SAME WATER is 2 min. up the road!!) Though it's a Town of Oyster Bay beach during the day, we lucky out of town "invaders" are lucky enough to be able to come in, enjoy both the beach and the calmer bay (?) catch free concerts, AND enjoy this SURPRISINGLY good "al fresco" dining option as well... SCORE!! I had my doubts about this "Margaritaville-esque" spot, wondering if it might be perpetually busy just because of its primo location, and every single time we've tried to eat here in the past, there's always been a HUGE wait, but on a recent Sunday evening, we decided to wait it out (were told approx. 45 minutes at about 7pm) and enjoyed the sunset and tunes wafting our way from the concert. My sister went and checked at about 20 minutes (we LI'ers always take that chance!!) and found that the high top tables had no wait (!!) so we were seated early!! Give that a try if you've got a long wait!! Table was fine, service was GREAT, and the menu went from basic "beach/bar fare" to some really interesting options. They were "out" of fish and chips (?!?) my first choice, and I'm soooooo happy they were, because what I **did** wind up ordering was WONDERFUL!! The tomato watermelon salad, with just about the best, freshest salmon I've ever had added on, was WONDERFUL, and sorry, I'm STEALING their idea, if not the authentic recipe, to try at home!! Lots of tempting apps, entrees, cocktail choices, and even a few tropical desserts to try. My sister and her BF got the salmon entree and were WISHING they got my salad instead. GREAT spot for summer sunset dining. Expect a wait, but it'll be worth it!! ENJOY!!

This place is on the side of the bay, the scenery is great, at least I liked it, the service was very good, from the moment the hostess greets you till the time you meet your server, friendly and helpful staff. The food was pretty good. We had the coconut shrimp and the lobster tacos, and they didn't disappoint, I will definitely come back .

Amazing view

You really aren't coming to this place for gourmet food. However I will say the mussels in a the coconut broth was pretty good. Wings we're just ok. Cocktails were decent. Nothing special. For some reason we were told 30-45 minutes for a table. And there was plenty of open tables. The band was playing next door. They had a terrible speaker playing the music. Bartenders were nice and attentive. Its a beach bar. A couple of tweeks and this place would be amazing as opposed to ok

Not gonna like that to our surprise, the food was very good. The view is great and the vibe is awesome. Zack was a wonderful server

Nasty Açaí bowl. Not Real açaí!!!

07/0424 Happy 4th The Açaí bowl was nasty!! There was way too much granola, the açaí was not açaí it was a purée of blue berry and banana with ice pieces. 25% of a Banana and one strawberry on top. The strawberries were from a box. It did not look like it was washed at all. $13 - Not worth it! Please use real açaí! Learn how to make a açaí bowl. Penn station has a nice açaí bowl. Go there and learn how it's done before deceiving your customers. Thanks, Joe

First time here and definitely coming back. Especially since my husband and I are big beach bums. Granted, we are not Town of Oyster Bay residents so they allow us 2 hours for restaurant only, no access to beach or play area but eating here was enough for us to feel like we were on vacation, surrounded by palm trees and their outdoor tiki bar. Food and drinks were delicious. It's only memorial day weekend and I'm sure that this place is great for the summer. Our waiter, Tyler, was awesome; so sweet and attentive. Even the hostess was so welcoming and friendly.

Lunch, cocktails and waterside view of Great South Bay.
Nick F.

Today's lunch at Surf Shack exceeded any expectations. All we really wanted was a cocktail overlooking the Great South Bay. But I couldn't resist the Mahi Tacos, and this was an excellent choice, spiced to perfection with a hint of sweetness, And the grilled chicken over a salad was also a great choice. All fresh ingredients and large portion. Great outdoor beachy vibe. Very good service, Thank You Kristen for the service and great suggestions.

Seared Tuna. VERY good.

A little bit out of the way, but definitely worth a trip. This spot is right on the bay with beautiful views of the beach, water and sky. The staff and bartenders were all very friendly and the drinks were delicious. It took us a while to get a table (no reservations accepted either), but once we sat we were immediately greeted by our waiter and the service was immaculate. The seared tuna entree that I had was really good, and in fact, all of the food we ordered was... The only real negative about this place are the bathrooms, which isn't really their fault. The restaurant shared bathrooms with the public beach so as you can probably imagine- they're not the cleanest.

Ask the Community - Surf Shack

Does the restaurant have live music?

I do believe they have music, I think that you would have to check on their website since I don't think its a daily thing.

Do you have to be a resident of this town to have lunch here? Also Do they take walk ins for a weekday lunch or do need reservation?

No. You tell them at the booth that you're going to the restaurants and they'll tell you to park to the left. They take walk ins.

A really intimate place, with probably like 15 tables max inside, and a little bar that can sit also about the same amount of people, but still looks new and fresh, and also be on the lookout because when you're driving the place sneaks up on you. The friendliest service, Lauren who seated us and served us was truly genuine, and I told her I really appreciate that as most restaurants don't have that sense of personal customer service, actually noticeable and appreciated. The food was also really good, the dip was flavorful, could be a little warmer but still very good, the chips were next level, and this was a huge hit. The calamari was lightly breaded, and also I do appreciate the two sauces to choose from when dipping, either Kung Pao or Marinara. I got the Pastrami Rub Tuna over Scallion Mash, and when I first looked at it I thought the fish piece was a bit small, but after eating it, it was the perfect size, and the mash was delicious, and the Wasabi Sauce to dip the fish really made the dish Pop. Drinks were okay, started with a kick and boozy but finished a bit watery for my first one, the second one I had with Mescal was a 10/10 though. This place needs attention, and the fact that it is still pretty low key and food influencers haven't descended to blow up it's spot is awesome.

You can risk parking on the main road, but there are parking lots nearby that are much more convenient. The speakeasy style vibe is very cool and the open bar/kitchen is fun to watch the guys behind it work their magic. Staff were friendly and very helpful, but my one qualm was that our server opted to try and just remember our order by heart rather than writing it down, everything came out right, but he did have to confirm with us that he had the order right. Starting with cocktails, which I think is where this place really shines, I got the pistachio martini and their signature old fashioned. On top of just how pretty the drinks are, they match it with the quality. The old fashioned is one of the better ones I've had and was my favorite of the two, but I'm not sure you can go wrong with any choice on their list! Then for food, we started with the blackened scallops and the pork belly empanadas. Both were tasty but the empanadas were my personal favorite of the two. The scallops felt a little over seasoned, but obviously not to the point of being inedible. For mains, I got the lamb meatballs, and I tried a bit of my girlfriend's steak sandwich. The meatballs and sauce were just as good as any Italian place I've been to and perfect serving size. The steak sandwich though was served on THE softest ciabatta I've ever tasted but still held together well and made for an excellent, albeit huge, sandwich. I think she beat me out by just a hair on this one. I had really wanted to get their grilled cheese and tomato soup, but they had just run out, but I think they were just coming up with an elaborate ruse to get me to come back! Well, it's working, because I will absolutely comeback for more cocktails and that grilled cheese! We sat at the very last table in the restaurant, and this raises my only other concern, when the kitchen doors would swing open, you would get a quick smell of that garbage kind of smell which was a little off putting, but it wasn't constant enough where we were bothered to be asked to move our table, but food for thought. Surfing up just a few small things could easily have this place up to 5 stars from 4.

There were only two other tables occupied at that time and a few ppl at the bar. First impression, a nice cozy restaurant full of bold colorful decor, nice sized bar, maybe 5-6 sections in total. Drinks: the passion fruit margarita was amazing! I love that they used fresh fruit in the drink. My father enjoyed a coconut drink and sister had a spicy margarita. Also, there is only one choice for the kids' menu so we ordered chicken fingers and fries for my 5 y/o nephew. We ordered the trio of empanadas which consisted of 1 cheese, 1 chicken, & 1 beef. My hungry teenager devoured the meat ones and I split the cheese one with my nephew. All tasty, no complaints. Dinner: I ordered the passion fruit (wild caught) salmon served over shredded collard greens & yucca mash (small portion but full of flavor sorry forgot to take photo). Every one else ordered a beef meal and were pleased. FYI: gratuity was included on the bill, she deserved every $$. The owners did not come over to greet us but the waitress did an amazing job checking on us non stop and making sure drinks were refilled and plates were removed in a timely manner.
