An old classic Florida beach restaurant that still got it! The food was excellent, offering large portions and plenty of flavor. Brittany our waitress was efficient, explained the best options on the menu for us and friendly. The owner came over to our table and introduced himself, a very nice touch! We sat inside, but the outside dining on roof looks excellent for the next time we go. P.S. Don't leave there without trying the chocolate peanut butter pie! read more

First of all, Dan is the man! This server worked his ass off and never once made us feel like an inconvenience, which is so common in the service industry, especially in busy tourist areas! He got our drinks and food out quickly and was pleasant, kind, and funny! I was driving so I didn't try any drinks, but my aunt and uncle loved a variety of them! The oysters were to die for and the lobster Mac and cheese was divine; easily could have been shared by 2 or more people. Only food I wasn't impressed with was boneless wings. We had dinner at Sunset Grill last night. We went a few months ago and it was wonderful, however last night was terrible. My boyfriend ordered fried shrimp which were bland. I ordered shrimp scampi which was the worst I've ever had. The shrimp tasted as though they were not fresh, the sauce had a horrible flavor, and it was served over elbow pasta. I've never not seen it served over linguine. To top it off, we were charged a service fee which we were not told about and it was just two of us. We will not be back. read more

Looking for a place for an early dinner (before 5pm) we stopped at the Sunset Grill. Justine was our server and was found to be very informative as to the menu items as well as very open and personable. we both started off with the New Eng clam chowder and found it very rich and ctea my with large chunks of potato & lots of clam pieces. My wife had the fried haddock and said it was done just right & very tasty. I ordered the coconut fried shrimp w/fries accompanied by black beans and rice. The shri were large and very tasty, specially after dipping into the side of the house dipping sauce. The fries were crisp to bite into and soft in the middle. Made the trip down from the great northeast to St. Augustine twice back in July and August. Each time after the 14ish hour marathon drive, Sunset Grille was the perfect location since it's next door to the HGI. The first trip in July was on a weekday and the restaurant was mobbed. They quoted us a 40 minute wait which thankfully proved to only be about 20. In August it was a Friday early dinner and things were deserted but by the time we left it had filled up lightening fast over the prior 75 minutes. Shrimp Toast - Honey Citrus Salmon - Clam Chowder - Lobster Mac and Cheese - Tuna Poke Bowl A few thoughts: * The lobster mac and cheese price is bloated as hell at $30 but it does come with a decent pile of lobster on top. I suppose you get what you pay for? * Hold out for seating upstairs. Great view in general and yes, you can see the ocean across the street. You'll wait longer but it's worth it. * The clam chowder is off the charts good! Truly a must try! * Somehow on our first visit we were talking about Shirley Temples and our server offered to have one made for my daughter. It wasn't exactly the classic way I remember it, but she liked it and we never got charged since it's not on their menu and they didn't have a price for it. Nice! How this is the #1 restaurant per TripAdvisor I don't know. If portions are how you rate food is the only way I would think. Menu is limited - I had chicken tortellini - was like eating soup. This place gets really busy at dinner time and usually has at least an hour wait time. We tried coming the other night and they were super busy and we didn't feel like waiting 1 1/2 hour so we went somewhere else. Today we decided to go around 3:30 for a late lunch/early dinner and only had to wait 5 minutes. Hostesses were friendly and our server was nice. The portions were large and we left with a couple of takeout boxes. That Asian ahi tuna salad was the bomb! The other salads came with their house key lime vinaigrette dressing and that was super delicious. Took away a star because my cousin asked for dressing on the side(ahi tuna salad) and had to send it back because it wasn't and therefore had to wait while we got to eat. Great beach bar food! Hubby had triple D wings and the front taste was a bit sweet with a spicy end. Cooked to perfection. He also had the crabby fries which were unusual, but great also. If we made it at home we would have served the fries on the side so they wouldn't get soggy as soon. I had the coconut shrimp with the Pina colada dipping sauce which was fantastic. My sides were the green beans and rice and beans. The green beans were very fresh and not overcooked. The beans and rice were very flavorful and had a sneaky moderate spice to the back taste. Tried this place last night for dinner as it was within walking distance of my hotel. We went a little early for dinner at the beach (5pm) and no problem getting a table for two (we were actually seated at a booth inside that could easily hold 6). The place is decorated with a nautical theme and is no frills when it comes to table settings think silverware delivered in a paper sanitary wrapping and paper napkin dispensers on your table with your datil pepper sauce and other condiments. The tables and booths are close together and if you get a large party or a loud talker, the conversation will spill over to your table. Which happened to us. Our server was prompt and attentive. He was also able to provide menu suggestions and offer input on items we were unsure of. We opted for the bang bang shrimp appetizer which is fried shrimp topped with a datil pepper sauce (if you are used to Bonefish Grill bang bang shrimp this is different as it is not thoroughly mixed). The appetite was still good about 8-9 shrimp on a bed of Cole slaw mix. For our entree, I had the sunset grouper (market price $29.99) with collared greens and a baked potato. My wife opted for the sunset pasta at the suggestion of our server. My grouper came blackened (you can also get it grilled) topped with a shrimp and crab cream sauce which was delectable. The collard greens were soft and tender but had a lot of stems in them. My potato came out in a foil jacket with a side of butter in plastic cups and a packet of sour cream. It was still good and a I ate everything. However, my wife's sunset pasta was the star of the show, it is cavatappi pasta in a cream sauce made of shrimp, crab, bacon, mushrooms, red peepers and some tomato. It was a filling succulent meal. She just wished they would have given her some bread to dip in it. But it is so filling, you don't need a side a bread with it. Now here's where the seafood is in St. Augustine. We ventured over to the beach on the last day of our visit and we are glad we did! We stopped here for lunch on a busy Saturday and had excellent service from Danny. Honestly, Danny was the best server we had all weekend. They have outside, inside and upstairs seating. We chose inside. I ordered the fish spread and the Minorcan chowder. Both were delicious. Sometimes I am disappointed by people's fish spread but not here. It was so good! I also liked that they served it with plenty of red onions and banana peppers on the side. I love Minorcan chowder. It is a tomato based soup with datil peppers, grown in the area, and seafood. So flavorful! My husband had wings, fries and ordered a fried shrimp dish for us to share (similar to bang bang shrimp.) The shrimp in this dish were huge! Much bigger than the shrimp you get in similar appetizers. My husband ended up taking most of the wings to go and having them later back at our rental. We were looking for a restaurant for an early dinner close to our condo and we saw Sunset Grille and decided to give them a try. We arrived and we were seated immediately, where we were warmly greeted by our server Dieter and he went over the menu with us. We started off with the Bang Bang Shrimp, which was lightly breaded and had the right amount of heat. For our entree, I ordered the Honey Citrus Herb-Crusted Salmon with Clooard Greens and Grilled Brussel Sprouts. My wife had the Minorcan Datil Shrimp with Deep Fried Cheese Griits. These two meals were absolutely made to perfection. We couldn't eat another bite, but Dieter suggested we try the Key Lime pie and he put it in a to-go container for us. My wife tells me that it was one of the best Key Lime pies, ever. By the time we left, the waiting and parking area were packed with patrons. But if you want fresh, delicious food in huge portions, with great service, this is the place. But come early, they fill up quickly here. read more

Thought we would try this restaurant out tonight during our two day stay in St Augustine and glad we did. Party of 3 with an 8 year old and even though they were super busy the wait wasn't bad at all. The staff did a great job keeping tabs on everyone. Brittany (spelling) was our waitress and she was AMAZING! She was on top of everything and was always checking up on us. Kudos to the bus boy as well, so polite and we never had to ask for our plates to be cleared away. Now the food, simply amazing! Clam chowder in a cup and it was phenomenal! Fish and chips was awesome! Outside was crispy and flavorful and the inside was super juicy. Key lime pie was spectacular also. We are basically homeless vagabonds traveling between NY/LI and Florida for a week. Blown way over our AT&T data plan so I will keep my two reviews in St. Augustine brief but pointed. Saw the great and numerous reviews on Yelp, Google, Trip Advisor (I look there but do not review because of posting issues...... I may stop here on Yelp because of some censorship of my reviews from 2 years ago as well btw) But we keep all the text unfiltered, raw, and REAL!!!! Walked here and got ensnared in a 45 minute upstairs and 35 minute plus downstairs wait for a table for 2. Bummer. We put in our name, and bee-lined to the bar to wait it out. Met a wonderful "older" woman who should be the mayor of St. Augustine!!! She has been in the immediate area for 30 years. A wonderful full of life aura and conversationalist. We now have dubbed her the FL Welcome Committee Chairman. She also has known the bartender-ess? (female bartender and also a bit pregnant :-)) for 15 years. etc etc We cancelled our reservation and stayed at the bar. She pointed out ALL the best options. Like Mango Mango down the street frm the day before, this is Eating and Drinking.....not Dining and Sipping/Tasting :-) That is fine. Got multiple St. Pauli Girl N/A (great choice - ODouls is bathwater) and my wife went around the chart with Martini and Specialty beverages - all were excellent. We decided not to go crazy as we have been traveling for 5 days and eating like kings.........and likely conjuring up gout and other unhealthful results especially some now visible weight gain from the stress and sedentary sitting behind the wheel driving and hotel lounging by beach and pool!! Simply got the Bang bang coconut Shrimp and Buffalo Cauliflower and then a we got a Fish and Chips to go for my daughter doing a chemistry lab final back at the hotel room. ALL were fantasticly prepared with ample serving size and we were happy and satiated. Well done. The truly wonderful part about this place is the service in this case at the front desk, and then the exemplary ad exceptional bar staff and specifically our female bartender who juggled with her partner a LOT of people and the restaurant demand (she while pregnant) Pete Rose would lose the title of Charlie Hustle to her!!!! Our sever was not super attentive we had to keep asking other servers for napkins and ketchup etc. The patio while dog friendly is right next to the smoking area. (This really almost got them a three.) So we smoked the whole time we ate. The food is what solidified the 4. We had to try the clam chowder it was very tasty levels of flavor. My Fiesta Bowl was exactly a party in my mouth! The shrimp were the perfect pairing for all the other ingredients. The grouper sandwich was tasty, but was missing a sauce of some kind. Since we have Sunrise Grill in Augusta (and love it), we just had to try Sunset Grille while in St Augustine and WOW!! Headed straight upstairs for upstairs seating because you don't wanna miss that ocean view! Hubby started out with the NE Clam Chowder while I chose the Crab & Artichoke Bisque, and they were both amazing!! Crab Artichoke tonight was even better than my favorite ever since Lobster Bisque, that I had on a Royal cruise ship a few years back! Next up....Datil dry rub wings didn't disappoint! We then had a shrimp salad with all the fixins, and we couldn't leave without the Momos Coconut Shrimp w/pina colada dipping sauce!!! it was just absolutely delicious all of it+ and of course, I had to have an actual Pina Colada bc why not?!? We choose this place because it looked welcoming from the street, I didn't expect much thinking it might be more "touristy" but was happily surprised to see that it was not... Decorated with wood and with a homey feel, we were greeted warmly and sat promptly at a table with a street-side view. The service was very attentable and management dropped by a couple of times checking on our time there - that was a nice touch. We each had a seafood related meal - I had their macadamia nut encrusted Mahi Mahi, my wife and her friend had a shrimp pasta meal, all of it was really, really good. I cannot express how ell these meals were made, presented, and tasted - top-notch. For dessert we had their peanut butter pie - Wow, it was big and good. Let me start by saying the food was very good. I had the Conch chowder and the fish and chips. Haddock was the fish the chips were baked potato they had split and roasted. Very good. Wife had 2 appetizers and a baked potato. The services was good. The menu was to me jumbled and not the kind of menu you would expected.. THE restaurant is more like 3. Theirs out side. Up stairs or the back. The in side had a very 70s feel. I was not impressed with the bar. But as I started with the food was good. First time here since relocating.. FANTASTIC! We just stopped in for a quick drink after spending the afternoon at Ft. Matanzas. Sat outside upstairs. Chilly but they had the heaters on. Danny was outstanding. His energy was perfect . Drinks were fabulous. He brought extra blue cheese olives... We ate here in May and loved it. We decided to try it again and we weren't disappointed. Our bartender Kenny (been there a while) was great as we wanted to bring in our own bottle of wine (and pay a corking fee). Kenny said in 20 years this was the first time he got that question.
