On Labour Day, after doing some shopping (it's still odd to me to hit a mall on a holiday, but I'm making a new tradition up as I go), I had originally planned on using my Groupon at a restaurant in Scarborough. When I got there, it was closed. I should have checked before going, but a fun day of shopping will throw me off. So, what to do? I remembered that there was a Sunset Grill at Kennedy Commons. It wasn't all that far for me to get to. I love Sunset Grill. I hadn't been to this location, so I headed over there. I used to come to Kennedy Commons often when there was an AMC Theatre. With the various stores that have popped up in the area, I visit it a lot more. There was plenty of parking. I got one within steps of the main door. I went in and was promptly greeted by one of the staff. I sat down and got a menu handed to me. I had a cheerful server. I ordered three slices of French toast with a side order of sausage links. It's my go-to meal. I do branch our more at Sunset Grill, as I love the variety and food. I got my meal fairly quickly. The problem? I got two slices of French toast instead of three. Yes, my minor in math does come in handy! My server may have been super busy, but she also noted that something was wrong with my order and came back without my flagging her. She apologized, took my plate, and a few minutes later, I got all three pieces of French toast. Nice! As expected, I enjoyed my French toast and sausage links. I find that all three Sunset Grill eateries that I have been to make consistent, delicious food. The hours of operation at this restaurant tend to stay open longer than the ones that I have been to. I got the Eggs Florentine for breakfast this morning and the portion size was really big for a breakfast dish. Let's talk about the actual dish itself. The poach eggs was over cooked so that was quite a disappointment. The spinach wasn't too bad actually but I wasn't a big fan of the raw onions. It was way too strong for my liking. The English muffins itself was decent. The potatoes wasn't anything special. The hero of the dish was the hollandaise. It was really flavorful. Decor/Ambience: 3/5 During colder season, it is best not to sit close to the entrance, because it is a single door with no other barricade from the outdoor weather conditions. Pop radio music plays in the background and wooden lampshades, tables and chairs fill the space. Each table has ketchup, Frank's RedHot cayenne pepper sauce, Tabasco sauce, sugar, salt and pepper. A dozen two sweaters and like half a dozen 4-seater tables. Homely. Food quality: 2/5 People who love all-day breakfast can rejoice! Alas of your food was not burnt. For meat-lovers, the steak and 3 eggs served with either house salad or home fries and thick toast is their priciest item on their menu for $17.49. Since almost everything has eggs as expected, there are only a few items namely salads that are actually vegan. I got the southwest vegan breakfast hash and I love the portions! You can create your own omelettes. There are also pancakes, waffles, sandwiches, burgers, lighter breakfast, juices, cold drinks, hot drinks, and plenty of sides and choices to choose from for non-vegans, as always! My hash was a bit burnt and thus some bites were not harder or too crispy to eat. Service: 2.5/5 Sufficient, but could be warmer as their name might suggest otherwise. My guacamole and tomatoes were served on plastics sides. Water was served in plastic cups. Too much plastic-use for a sit down... Tea is served with their Tetley packaging and you steep it yourself. Staff usually stand behind the counter instead of walking around to check in on their patrons regularly. Read my rant update at the bottom. Value: 2.5/5 Their portions are hardy, but mine meal alone turned out to be $14 after tax and tips. If the only viable choice for me is this, then it is not really worth coming for me. Overall: 2/5 Was going to give this place a 4* originally, but their vegan offering is way too small for me compared to other breakfast places I know. Still for non-vegans, this would be a decent place to go to, if their food was not burnt. Also, just when I went up to pay for my meal, because they were too busy either behind the counter or serving other guests to notice that both my brother and I were done eating our meals, I politely told the cashier my order for the bill and she unnecessarily responded back with, "I know. I am the one who served you." Well Miss, if you do know that you were the one who served me, maybe you could do your job better by being more present, so neither my brother nor I had to go to the counter to get our bill ourselves! Unnecessary comment when she barely did anything but serve us our meal, which is her basic duty! 8% tip, because at least I am nice enough to wish her luck, but below 10% for substandard service. Like, if you were not that interested to serve much less converse with us, fine, don't go barely do your job and then add an unnecessary comment. If you know better then you should have DONE better. Came here for brunch today and overall the experience was average. Let me start with the food - I ordered a Sunset Super which came with three eggs, four sausages, two pancakes and home fries. They were good sized portions and it was filling! However, the taste of the food was average. It's hard to describe because one would think this type of breakfast food should be pretty standard. My main thought is that everything seemed to be extra greasy (eggs, home fries). I've been to other similar places where I've enjoyed the food more. Service was fine. went here this morning at around 10:20 for some breakfast before going the beach with my friend and the place was part, most likely because it was civic holiday. anyways we were put on the wait list and were told the wait time was 10-15 minutes and took my number so they could call us when they have available tables. we were fine with that so we went over the dollarama to buy a few items and it was around 10:40 when we realized they still haven't called so we gave them a little more time. long story short it turned 11 so we were waiting 40 minutes already do we decided to go in and ask if there were any tables. the lady at the front was kind and her first words after we walked in was "you guys were still waiting?" and not long after we got seated. aside from that the food was great and the portions are huge but in a good way as it is only $14 for the whole meal and i barely finished. everything was good especially bacon, the home fries did need a little more seasoning but can't complain for the price. this was my 3rd time going to sunset grill and the food continues to amaze me. read more

I came here on the weekend while my family was in town. It was jam packed with people which is always a good sign. However, I found the food pretty meh at best. My pancakes were burnt and overcooked, they tasted like it for sure. The potatoes were very bland, not an ounce of seasoning. That was disappointing but I guess that's why there was salt and pepper on the table. My mother's bacon had a few raw strips of bacon, like they looked like they didn't even touch the heat! My husband said his food was good but the same issue with the pancakes. So all in all, the food is not good here at all. In spite of this, the service was really good from our waitress. We came here for brunch today. We walked inside and were not greeted for a while. Having never been here before, we didn't know if you just sat yourselves down or not. After a while someone said take the table over there. It was the only clean table available for 3 people anyways. Our server was lovely, got our waters and took down our orders. Food here is not a big portion but does fill you up. The food itself however is very bland and looks homemade, (in a bad way). When my Peameal arrived, the server was already apologising and asking if it was ok for me. I looked and the Peameal was all in small bits, dry and burnt on one side. I told her that it was too burnt and she took my plate away. Then she brings my plate back minus the peameal and tells me to munch on it while they cook new peameal. I didn't mind but I had eaten more than half before my peameal arrived. Our server was very good. Food is not that great here. And we weren't greeted at the door in a timely manner. Parking is free and their is a lot. The tables were clean and so was the floor. Staff: 5/5 nice and friendly and they always look busy. Can't say anything bad about them. Food: 0/5 We had the burger meal and a sun set meal. Both were very greasy in fact the fries that's all you can taste. The drinks are one time shot. The only Positive was it was hot. Decided to go to Sunset Grill for our last breakfast of the year :O When we got there at around 10:30am, it was pretty packed. We got seated in about 2 mins upon our arrival and our hostess immediately brought us cups of water (perfect!!). Our waitress came about 2 mins after to ask if we wanted anymore drinks and if we needed more time with the menu. We ordered a small and large chocolate milk to bring us back to our childhood days hehe. We ordered a sunset super with bacon and an eggs sunset. We waited about 15 mins and this is when my only problem occurred - it was sitting on the shelf for about 10 mins before it got to us. I'm sure they have a system to bring food out, but there were a line up of orders ready but nobody to put them out :( Anyway, the sunset super w/ bacon came with 3 eggs, home fries, 5 strips of bacon and 2 pancakes for about $11.50 which I think is a SUPER good price if you ask me! Came here twice for brunch and both times Sunset delivered! Clean, friendly service and good food. If you're looking for a simple brunch place, they have all your regular breakfast needs for a very reasonable price. They've even upped their game by having a crab cakes benedict ($14.99), which was surprisingly good. Service was friendly, a little bit on the slower side but manageable. I've been to the location on the Danforth but it's my first time at this location. Definitely more modern looking but still has an old time diner feel to it, and it looks awesome -- very spacious, perfect lighting, and a decent amount of seating. Our waitress was nice. She was cheerful and helpful with recommendations. To eat we got the Caramel Apple Waffle Supreme -- caramelized apples, cinnamon, icing sugar, whipped cream, and strawberries; it was to die for! Extremely sweet though so if you're not looking for a sweet breakfast, go with something else. We also got French toast and cut it up and added it to the waffle supreme. Additionally, we ordered a side of home fries which were average, I've had better. To drink we got the freshly squeezed OJ which was so good. The food was mediocre. That's fine - you get what you pay for. What wasn't acceptable was how several groups were seated before us, even though they arrived after us. The reason stated was that these were groups of 3 or 4 and we were only 2, and larger tables had become available earlier. That's fine and I don't mind waiting when it's a one or two larger groups that arrive after us, who are seated earlier. But when it's like 5 groups that one watches get seated time after time that's unacceptable. Further when this was pointed out to management, she shifted blame to the server and said "if I knew I would have seated you", rather than taking accountability for the policy and apologizing. It's less the policy than the managers attitude that incensed me, as I also deal with customers and when something goes wrong and the customer is unhappy, I immediately apologize and TAKE accountability. A pretty solid place for western breakfast, allbeit a little expensive. It's about $80 for four people after tax and tips to have coffee, juice, and a full breakfast meal. I had tried their blueberry, breakfast sandwiches, etc. and it's pretty standard fare for a chain. We've been to this restaurant a few times, and have always been pleased. Service can sometimes be hit or miss, but the food is always delicious! We went there on Sunday, and my daughter was struggling through her day. Nothing specific, just having a tough day for a 3 year old. She sat on my lap after we'd ordered our food, and we tried to cheer her up. It wasn't working. The pouting and sniffles continued. When our food came, she looked at her plate for a few minutes, then told me "I want to sit in my own chair." Then she started to eat, and her mood improved. She ate some homefries (gasp! Voluntarily eating veggies!) and some smoked salmon, and laughed when I showed her what happens when you lick a lemon. SLOW service. Food is bland. I've been here a few times and its always tough getting someone's attention. The last time I literally had to chase the waitress down who was too busy texting, just to get my bill. I don't like giving bad reviews and generally don't but this has happened too many times. Being told a coffee refill is coming and then never getting it, being passed over and not being checked on after an hour is unacceptable, especially when there were only two other tables occupied, one who was a single person the other a couple. If you're ok with mediocre food and have a lot of time and don't mind bad service ..well this would be the place, personally I would recommend Eggsmart Warden and Ellesmere or Coras off Mccowan for brekki. read more

Rude store owner (I believe) and long wait time. They let us know we had to wait as we are a table of 3 looking for a 4 seater, no problem. However, 4 people were seated before us and in addition to that, there was an open table with a 4 seater and 2 seater put together. I asked the "owner" if they could split the table so we could sit on the 4 seater. The owner was rude and dismissive and said "I have reservation, what do you expect me to do?" I really hate having to point out flaws about the service but I guess it's also needed. If Management reads this, please take this as constructive criticism. I walked in and since they had a sign that said "Please seat yourself", I did just that. At least 20 minutes have gone by and none of the servers approached me to offer any drinks. All I got was "Oh! I didn't see you there!", but she still walked away. So I literally had to stop the other waitress (who walked by me a few times), for a glass of water. My party ran late so I was sitting for some time and another maybe 20 minutes had passed until one of the waitresses finally offered coffee. I do however, appreciate her accommodating my request to move to a larger seating area as my party consisted of an infant who will be in a car seat/stroller. Oddly enough though, the service that I was expecting, was only really given when the rest of the party came. Who knows what the reasons were but it was a little disappointing at first. I still gave a 20% tip since their service was on point WHEN it actually started about 40mins after my arrival. Now on to the food review... Crab Cake Benedict - Were good sized cakes and although I asked for soft poached eggs, was still a little too overdone. Was still pretty good and the hollandaise sauce was also generous and creamy. I think it needed a little bit more lemon and the cake itself needed a little bit more seasoning. Normally I'm good with just adding pepper but this time around, I even put a lot of hot sauce. 4/5. Bacon - Can't go wrong with bacon really, but some places still don't do bacon well (not evenly cooked). Theirs were good. I was happy to pay extra for the side of bacon. 5/5. House Fries - Seems like the potatoes were boiled a bit before being fried. Needs way more seasoning as they were quite bland. Would also be nice if it had more crisp to them. 4/5. read more

Came here for mother's days with my kids not only did we wait forever but when the kids got their food we had no utensils. The server did not come back to the table so I put my hand up yo get someone's attention the owner Sheena yelled out "I'm not gonna your server" it was really rude and I think someone needs to teach her manners. Would definitely recommend the "French Connection" platter. The French toast had a lemony zing, the orange juice was awesome, the poached eggs were perfect!
