This place continues to amaze me and I rate it as the best breakfast spot in Savannah in the Diners, Drive-in's and Dives category with 5-Star shoutouts for the best omelettes in town -- thin like we like'em. There's two of these spots in the Savannah area. This one is in town. The other one is just off Route 80 near Garden City, a suburb of Savannah and is very good. But these are franchise operations (it appears) and our 5-Star rating consistently goes to this location. Offerings on the menu are wide ranging. Right up front. My wife and I love this place after one visit. For those of you who may be put off by some of the less stellar reviews, let me clarify. This place is a diner. Diners are a unique American culinary art, and Sunny Side Up is one of the finest examples of that art form. To clarify, they do not have avocado toast, they will not substitute your grits for freshly picked wild strawberries. The building is not Leeds certified - in fact, it occupies a corner of a pretty tired looking strip mall where it appears to have been since the Nixon administration. What they do exceedingly well, however, is prepare excellent food and serve it in a welcoming and friendly manner. These are people that understand that breakfast doesn't need to be "elevated" - breakfast just needs you to get out of its way and do it well. These are people who obsess about hash browns and grits, where a cook who looks like he cooked the first egg ever, does alchemy with a flat top griddle and a spatula. More specifically, our server Mary was a gem. Knowledgeable, friendly and competent, she gave great menu advice, refilled drinks before you knew they were low, and just brought full to-go cups of beverages when we were done. Also, my wife wanted me to mention that the coffee itself was very good. This is an area where many places of this type fall short, but she was very impressed with the coffee here. In short, if you like diners as an institution, I urge you to go out of your way for this one. We certainly will. This place has been okay, but today they were off their game. The grits were cold and the biscuit was underdone. They would not give me credit for the biscuit when I said it was under done and wet on top. Then they talked about my complaint rudely at the register and some in Spanish, which I understood. Just a simple run of the mill diner. It was super quick, decent and very cheap. Pretty much is just what you would expect. We were seated immediately (it's seat yourself) and was actually very busy. He really enjoyed the pancakes, the only thing that would've made them better would have been real butter (not spread... which we understand that spread actually "spreads" unlike cold butter.) I had scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon and a waffle. The waffle and pancakes are made with different batter - which was a pleasant surprise! [Secret advice...use the Yelp app to put yourself on the wait list in busy times, or at any time.] You'll get 'the skinny' on wait time, time till your reservation and updating texts sent to you as conditions change. Omelets are great (and so big my wife and I split one) but my secret indulgement is a plate of their bananas foster pancakes which you can order by a single cake, or full serving. This place was in a sketchy looking shopping center, but it was packed! The entire time we were here there was a line of people. I felt bad for the servers, they were running nonstop, had to clean tables, etc and I only noted 2 servers?! I ordered their sausage breakfast burrito and added jalapeños. That was delicious! Served piping hot in stainless steel mugs we literally searched for on Amazon instantly. We probably need them.
