They are famous, seen in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. They have memorabilia and historical décor on the walls. But out midday weekday experience was not thrilling. We went for the all-breast-meat Chicken club sandwich. Fresh lettuce. Thick ripe tomato slices. Plenty of crispy tasty bacon. But the chicken was flavorless and on the dry side, with some tough bites that meant careless trimming. How about corned-beef hash eggs-Benedict with grits and a biscuit? The hash was dry. The grits were ok but ordinary. The biscuit was doughy and flavorless. If we were too late for freshly-made hash, they shouldn't have served them. Another great restaurant, very full, but we got lucky and seated immediately, when we left there was a short line. We both decided to get eggs Benedict, his was the Florentine with spinach and Canadian bacon, mine was the corned beef hash (made in-house!). We both had grits as a side since that was never available even in grocery stores our two and a half years living in Belize. Our orders were received promptly and were delicious. I guess the grits were made from unbleached corn(?), they weren't white. My husband also bought a HUGE eclair to go. They had a refrigerated case full of delectable desserts. Came here for brunch on Sunday morning. We didn't have a reservation and a line was pretty long. We waited for over 20 minutes to be seated. It gets super busy. The ambience is pretty traditional diner, I would recommend seating outside if weather allows, it's much more pleasant than seating outside. Service was friendly and attentive and very quick. They have a large selection of dishes. I had crab cake Benedict. Which was pretty good. We also had some decaf drip coffee. Our toddler got some pancakes that were really good. Solid place, with solid to good pricing. Pro waitstaff and cooks hustle and get things done and done _right_. Not frou-frou, but the kind of comfortable place where you know you'd better get there before the rush because otherwise you're going to have to wait. Clary's is definitely on old hidden gem and staple in Savannah. It's been years since I have visited and recently when I was craving homemade corned beef, to Clary's I went! Surprisingly, there was NO wait; so I was able to get a table right away. The place still looks exactly the same and the food still tastes the same. I had the corned beef plate with egg whites and cheese grits. Everything was really good. I did get a cheese danish to go, which was ok; it kind of lacked flavor for me. We chose Clary's because of our Old Town trolley tour and the fun story of it being part of a movie. I was beyond impressed with the amount of crab in the crab cakes!!! Crab cakes can be hit or miss because often places will use a lot of binder to use less crab. Not here!! Well, our first time here and we weren't disappointed. We were actually with friends who have been here before and their first visit made them remember this place out of all the options you have. A nice place. Appeared clean and was very open and comfortable. Staff were all very friendly and our server, despite being very busy, did a good job serving us. As for our meals: very very good. I had the chicken fried steak with two medium eggs, potatoes, and toast. I really enjoyed it. The wifey and one of our friends had sausage-biscuits and pepper gravy. They also both liked it and wifey allowed me to sample the gravy. I will say this, it will not need added pepper. Had a really nice flavor. Oh, don't let me forget, they have their own "small" parking lot. Again it's small and can only serve a few cars but it was great not to have to park. I DO NOT recommend this place for breakfast ! While I am not a Southerner and thus I am used to northern cuisine, I had a straightforward breakfast. I am a huge corned beef hash fan and these people claim to make their own. It was nearly inedible (but I suffered through it). It tasted somewhat metallic and had an over processed texture. The poached eggs on top were cooked properly, but they clearly added vinegar to the water, which left us both complaining of the taste. Maybe they should plunge them in a warm/ hot water rinse before serving. The grits were tasteless. From what I hear from the waitress, I guess tasty grits are up to the patron. I would be more inspired by a plain boiled potato than plain grits. Their home fries looked terrible, so I opted out ... mistake. The biscuit (which they claimed to bake on site) was dry, crumbly and tasteless. Butter couldn't save it. I had a biscuit the nite before at The Olde Pink House, that was divine ! So, I know it can be done. My partner had a pancake (which was fine) and poached eggs she could not finish because they tasted of vinegar. I LOVE breakfast. If you're in Savannah looking for breakfast or lunch, Clary's is a must-visit. Just a few blocks up from Taylor Square, it's in a convenient, neighborhood location. We stopped for breakfast twice during a visit to the city, and both times sat at the outside tables. Very comfortable, with not much traffic on Abercorn Street, so it wasn't at all noisy or exhaust-fumed. I had probably the best egg white Greek Omelette ever - perfect amount of feta. On another visit, I tried the oatmeal, and that too with the finely chopped pecans, etc., was perfect (the brown sugar, on the side, thankfully). Deputy Yelper loved The Georgian on a biscuit, and on our repeat visit got a customized shrimp salad on a biscuit. Do order the grits - not usually our favorite, these were excellent (even without cheese). Waitstaff on both visits was very attentive, keeping that coffee mug re-filled. My sister and her husband had been here and she wanted to go back. We sat at the counter which was nice and roomy and we got to watch the staff work hard to get food and drinks to everyone waiting. Here's the thing. You go in and we sat on the kitchen side. I thought, why did we pick this place? I love to pick places that have a cool style and ambiance. This was chaotic, loud, a little dumpy (sorry). BUT, the staff was nice and the food came out in like 6 minutes flat! And it all was delicious! I'm not normally a breakfast potato fan, but their cubed potatoes tasted like French fries and I loved them. I read reviews that the sausage gravy and biscuits were good. My husband was going to get that, but they were out. He opted for an omelet. I got the Olgethorpe with a substitution of the stuffed strawberry and cream cheese French toast instead of pancakes (Because I couldn't decide and everything sounded good.)
