If you prefer savory/salted grits you will either not enough them or will have to add salt. Yes I know there are variations of grit lovers and there's a big divide over salt vs sugar Sharing so those who love their grits like me won't be blind sided. The pancakes were on tiny plates but were really good!! Wanted to order the Kaulua drink but was told it wasn't actually Kaulua. My waitress became frustrated when I asked to see the bottle. The food was delicious and there are tables with griddles to make your own pancakes, which is pretty cool. The atmosphere is very bright, which may be an issue for those with hangovers. Lol Knocking off a star because our server is very unfriendly. She's all business, not smiling or saying good morning or asking how our day is going, nothing. To start our waitress was AWESOME! She was so sweet and she kept calling me "baby" and it just made me smile. She was the definition of southern hospitality. The food was great. We had a group of 6 and everyone loved their food. My only complaint was a wind chime attached to a busy door which drove us all crazy because it was nonstop. The inside of the restaurant is very eclectic, it's got an older hippie vibe to it with lots of faded colors. The server we had was pretty good, checking in on us frequently and he gave us good recommendations. For breakfast, we got a hot table, and some of the pancake batter so we can make our own pancakes, because that's awesome! Don't get me wrong; you take me to the grocery store and do I want to bag my own groceries? no. But cook our own pancakes, seems fun with your kid. The pancakes were good, and getting to see the art my daughter came up with was awesome. I got the black and blue sea grits, and they were pretty good. I thought there were some patches of grits that were pretty plain. Maybe if I'd have gotten some extra sauce, I could've mixed that in better so it wasn't bland at any point. A fun place to check out at least once if you've never been there. Prices are reasonable. My kids enjoyed the DIY pancakes. My recommendation is to share an order of the DIY batter and order a side of protein if you have smaller appetites. Each DIY batter makes about 4-5, 6 inch pancakes. My mother and I decided to stop in for breakfast during our girls trip to Savannah. It wasn't crowded and doesn't look like much from the outside, but this was the best breakfast we had during our trip! We both have strict gluten free diets and this place had tons of options! I ordered "the traitor" and substituted the biscuit for gluten free bread. The poached eggs and hollandaise sauce were the best I've ever had! I'd rate my breakfast a 10/10. My mother ordered "the clucker and the hen house" and she said it was delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly and the hash browns were well seasoned. I decided to dine at The Funky Brunch Café in Savannah since it was conveniently located near where I was staying on Broughton Street. I saw the griddles at many of the tables and loved the unique concept of making your own pancakes at the table, so, on the recommendation of our server, Kenya J., I ordered the Flippin' Funky at the Table. Of course, I couldn't stop at just pancakes and I added a single sunny-side-up egg to round out the meal. A cup of freshly squeezed orange juice paired perfectly with everything. Lots of families at the restaurant and despite it being a busy Sunday morning and getting busier and busier, Kenya was attentive and friendly throughout our visit. One night stay in Savannah so was looking for a spot for breakfast before hitting the road. I came across The Funky Brunch Cafe so decided to check it out. I got there just before 9am and it was still pretty empty. The hostess was seating the couple in front of me and saw I was alone and just said you go sit at the bar. I followed them in and asked if that was my only option. She asked what? And I asked if solos had to sit at the bar. There were only about 4 tables with people at them so it wasn't like they were hurting for tables; another lady overheard and said he can have a table. I was seated and got a polite server pretty quickly. After asking for recommendations, I settled on the Hangover. This was a bowl of hash browns with bacon, cheese, 2 eggs, topped with sausage gravy. Then you get a choice of toast or biscuit. The biscuit was very fluffy and tasted great. I was a bit confused about a strange taste in the meal however. There wasn't much if any seasoning but salt & pepper were on the table so that was fine. But there was an odd aftertaste from the gravy. It was almost like an anise/licorice aftertaste so it took away from me loving the dish. I noticed some of the tables had griddles inset in them and saw a family making their own pancakes. That's a fun experience but wasn't offered as an option for me, which was ok. I'd consider going back on a future trip, but there are plenty of other choices to consider as well. read more

The menu is extensive, but I zoned in quickly on Breakfast at Mom's: a biscuit topped with scrambled eggs and sausage gravy with a side of bacon. This was SO GOOD! I never clean my plate, but I enjoyed every bite of this dish! The gravy was so perfect, and combined with everything else made the ideal breakfast. Hub ordered The Goodman and had no complaints. (The hostess did not seem to want to be there sadly, and that was my first impression). Luckily our waitress was a breath of fresh air on that cloudy morning. She walked over and said, "you need anything else?" I looked at her and didn't say anything, but my friend did and she walked away thinking everything was okay. The grits flavorless. The sausage gravy tasted like flour and water. The hashbrown were dry and flavorless. The sausage had good flavor but the fennel seeds and other ingredients could be tasted and it wasn't my thing texture wise. The eggs were the highlight of the meal once I added salt and pepper and that's sad. The black and blue was okay but the grits had no flavor and the meat didn't have much either so again the meal was bland. There is literally nothing bad to be said about this place. Their long wait lines are well deserved! Our wait was about 20 minutes. We strolled some nearby shops and then got a text saying they'd be ready for us in 5 minutes, so we headed back and they were! We sat outside, the weather was a little drizzly but they have a roof and it was perfect. Savannah is a dog friendly town, so you may get to share your space with a furry friend. Be prepared. Our server was friendly, attentive, and my coffee cup never went empty. I got The Hangover and it was the mostest, bestest, singularly awesome choice, exactly what I wanted. A bowl full of hash browns, covered with sausage gravy, melty cheese, a huge pile of crispy bacon bits, and topped with an egg. The biscuit that came with it was tender, buttery, and delicious! Spensyr opted for something called Black & Blue Sea Grits. Shrimp and grits has been elevated in this dish. Grits covered with a bleu cheese Mornay sauce, blackened shrimp AND lobster, plus bacon!
