    Banchan of the Day 6/10
    Jenng C.

I came here because it's one of the restaurants that give the Chase Sapphire Reserve $150 OpenTable credit. It's a very small and narrow restaurant but creates a cute, intimate environment. They have an extensive wine selection and some unique drinks on their menu. The food though was just okay. The Hwe was steelhead trout with pickled strawberry. The Ssam was very tender and juicy. The other dishes were not very impressive, especially the Banchan which as some other reviews have said, seems a bit ridiculous to charge $25 for when many other Korean restaurants give this for free. The service was great though. I just wish the food was a little more special given the price tag and the location. Hwe 9/10 Banchan of the Day 6/10 Ssam 9/10 Spicy Tomato Tteokbokki 6/10

One of the new hot spots that opened not so long ago. I had high expectations going in It's definitely a challenge to have to order banchan (appetizers) when culturally they come complimentary at Korean restaurants. I quite liked the tteokbokki that was served in a lasagna style, but my friend did not...so it definitely just depends on each person's taste! The salad was refreshing so I would recommend that as well

Interesting small spot with a chef that's happy to chat about her restaurant. We were initially seated at the bar, but asked to move to a table and they obliged. The bar really is not conducive for 2 people sharing this many items; it's quite small. On to the food: Banchan were all great, we even added on a special spicy tuna and it was sooo good. We ordered 5 of the 6 mains and some were great and others were just ok. 1. The winter fruit salad (Bitter greens, dates, pears, lotus) was light and refreshing. 2. Chicken and crab dumplings were good, but couldn't taste any crab. 3. The Brisket is a must get, super flavorful and tender meat and well seasoned. 4. Chigae was not my favorite, it was pretty non traditional with flavors (paprika for example), and fell a bit flat. 5. Tteokbokki was as described but not overly exciting. 6. Wines were delicious and can be purchased at the adjacent Parcelle Wines Overall, I wouldn't rush to return, but glad I made a stop Banchan 5/5 Winter Salad 4/5 Chicken and Crab Dumpling 4/5 Brisket Ssam 5/5 Chigae 3/5 Tteokbokki 3/5

Super small place. Very cozy and intimate seating and also pretty dark inside. It was okay food wise. Only 6 things on the menu too tbh. We had 4 of them + banchan which is 25$. Super small portions and expensive. Everything was pretty fusion and not Korean flavor ish. I liked the tteokbokki but it was very tomatoey and almost 0 Korean gochujang flavor. Short rib fatty parts was good otherwise it was kinda dry. But I did like it with the lettuce and the kimchi + samjang. Banchan was decent the one dish I liked was the mashed potato Banchan. Sundubu was kinda bland sweeter than normal. Definitely not bad but lacking in spice and very unreminiscent of Korean Sundubu. The hwe lowkey didn't taste like anything. And it was super duper small. This was probably my least favorite dish.

Small space that's cute for a date night or catch up with a friend. Service was just ok. We sat at the counter and didn't get a chance to interact with the chefs. It's weird sitting right in front of them and not getting an acknowledgment. A simple "hi" would be a nice touch. Food was just meh when I compare it to general Korean food I've eaten. We ordered their banchan set, dumplings, and tteokbokki. A few of the dishes were too salty or just ok. Favorite thing was the dumplings though...I'd say must order if you go.

I was surprised by this spot, it was so fun, cute and the food was delicious!! I was skeptical about what I'd like from the menu but everything I had was sooo good. I'm usually a picky meat and potatoes kind of eater and this place is not that but the food is so good if you give it a shot. I highly recommend the rice cakes! My fav!

Sunn's is one of the harder tables to snag within Dimes Square these days. My hunch is that it may be thanks to the viral straciatella-gochujang tteokbeoki. While the dish has mass appeal, owner Sunny Lee has hinted that this is probably the most low-brow dish on the menu. Indeed, the items I'll remember from a late Sunday evening at Sunn's are mostly everything but the tteok. All of the banchan were excellent, but my favorite was the eggplant 나물, which was rather uniquely topped with olives. Dates also made a surprise appearance in the restaurant's namesake salad, which was a textural delight to the palette. I would have preferred a bottle of 처음처럼 to celebrate a first visit here, but the upmarket Jinro "Is Back" was objectively the right choice of pairing.

I liked Sunn's but am very conflicted about the experience overall. Let's start with the positives. This is a small and intimate wine bar with only a few tables and some bar seating. I overall liked the vibes. It felt trendy but was still very casual. Our server was excellent. He was very friendly but not at all overbearing. He also recommended a great bottle of wine that I really enjoyed with the meal. Food wise, everything tasted pretty good and authentic (coming from a Korean American). I especially liked the ssam. That soy-caramelized beef brisket was truly special. However, there were a few negatives I feel like I need to mention. I am still thrown off by a restaurant charging $25 for banchan. These are usually served for free at traditional Korean restaurants. The banchan were all quite good (especially the chili smoked eggplant) but they were not significantly better than the ones I would get complimentary at a Korean restaurant in Fort Lee or Palisades Park. In fact, I think everything was a bit overpriced in general. I also tried the hwe and chicken dumplings. Both were fine, but were also $5-$10 too expensive. For instance, they literally gave us five dumplings and charged $27. Overall, I can see why Sunn's is such a hit but I'm also a bit hesitant to recommend it, especially to other Korean Americans. I think considering price, this is a solid 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4).

Really cute and trendy Korean spot for small dishes and an extensive wine list. My boyfriend and I came here on a Friday night with no reservation and waited about 1.5h for our bar seating spot. We ordered quite a few dishes and our waiter was incredibly helpful in helping us order just the right amount of food. We got the banchan including one of the specials of the day, mandu, ddukbokki, pork belly, and the sesame crusted mochi cake for dessert. Everything was fresh and flavorful with an elevated spin on classic Korean dishes. Great spot for a date night or a more intimate dinner with friends!

Managed to snatch a reservation at Sunn's and really enjoyed my entire dining experience. Struggling to decide between a 4 and a 5, but ultimately rated a 5 given the overall creativity of the dishes and service! The banchan were all very tasty! The tahnini mushrooms and smokey squash were my top two from their standard banchan set. Loved how the squash was well seasoned and with a good texture. We also got one of their special off menu dishes: the anchovies with walnuts, which had the perfect umami and crunch for your meal. I appreciated how the cucumber wasnt too sour and had a nice refreshing crunch. I agree with others that it felt weird to pay for banchan. The hwe featured fresh bluefin tuna pieces with a touch of EVOO. I've never had snow ear in a crudo-like, cold appetizer dish so it was very interesting! The crunch and spice of the marinated burdock root contrasted nicely with the tender fish and almost-slimy snow ear! The mandu reminded me of Russian pelmeni because of the dill. The crab component didn't come through as much but I liked the overall combination of savory, herbacious flavors, and a touch of tanginess. I liked the ssam more than expected! It was very well seasoned and tender. The veggies were fresh. The wine selection was great and their orange was delectable!! I liked the cider too but it was a little tangy. To end it off, the mochi cake was chewy without being too sweet. Love how it's studded with sesame and the bean powder gives it a little sweet-savory contrast action. The restaurant itself is pretty small, but intimate and cozy. The water containers reminded me of my Korean friends' homes. Food came out quick and staff were pretty attentive! I mixed up my reservation time and they were able to accomodate my mistake/last minute change.

Banchan. Potato salad with pear and the roasted eggplant were favorites.

Came here in the midst of Canal Open Streets so with so many outdoor tables from various restaurants, it's very easy to miss this tiny place that's super tucked away. Amazing place if you're a wine connoisseur since the menu's stacked. Food highlight was the steak lettuce wraps--the meat was so incredibly flavorful and tender that I didn't even wrap it up, just ate it as is. The tteokbokki, with the slightly charred rice cakes, was also the perfect comfort dish, could very easily have eaten a tray of that all by myself.

Cute little wine bar with delicious Korean food. Definitely would recommend making a reservation as seating is very limited. Came on a Thursday with a friend after making a reservation a couple of weeks before. We arrived right at 6:30 pm and were immediately seated. While the restaurant is small, the tables are a good size (likely to ensure all the banchan fits!) and it doesn't feel cramped at all! The wine list is pretty extensive and the server was able to talk through the different options to help us choose a bottle. Food-wise, the menu is small but mighty-- we ended up ordering the banchan plus one of the specials of the day (an extra $6), the ssam, and tteobokki. I really enjoyed the banchan! They were delicious and definitely felt like a higher quality than what you may get at your typical korean restaurant, so I didn't feel bad paying for them. Even the add on we got (tuna + tomatoes), felt like a good value at $6. The tteobokki was definitely unique with the stracciatella on top and super filling (as tteobokki tends to be). The only thing I didn't really love about it was the tteok-- it was short, flat shaped instead of the typical long ones and I felt like it didn't have the bounce I wanted. The ssam was pretty good-- the meat was cooked to perfection but it wasn't anything novel flavor wise. If you are craving meat though I would definitely recommend. Since it's a small restaurant, they are pretty strict on the dining time. When we had 20 minutes left, we were asked if we wanted dessert as we had to vacate by 8 pm. So if you are looking for a yap session with a friend I might choose elsewhere. One last note-- I noticed other tables seemed to get better interaction from the restaurant. The table next to us got two complimentary banchan and the table behind us had a visit from the chef. Obviously I never expect any additional treatment, but at a restaurant that small, it's hard to not notice when the majority of the population is getting a slightly elevated experience. I'd suggest either ensuring that for all the tables or to avoid doing so, as it did detract slightly from my overall impression.

Sunn's has been on my list for several months and I am happy to report that it completely lived up to my expectations. The restaurants is tucked away in a quiet Chinatown street. The space is small, cozy, and intimate. So small, in fact, that the vapors from the open kitchen condense over the front windows, giving it the most perfect warm feel for the cold winter days. Getting a reservation ahead of time is quite essential since space is very limited but not too difficult to do if you get on OpenTable when they get release them. The hostess was very warm and welcoming. Our waiter was incredibly helpful! He gave us tips on how much to order (honest opinions and based off on observations from other groups), as well as proving us a very similar price and flavor profile alternative to a bottle of wine we had ordered but that ran out. He also was very available without being overbearing or making us feel rushed. His recommendations were all on point since we left perfectly full. We got a bottle of Riesling which was absolutely delicious and refreshing (the alternative our waiter had recommended!) For food between two we split: - Hwe: perfectly refreshing and bright starter. The fish was cold, had a tangy/ citrus flavor. It had a super lean cut that was well balanced by the pickled and spicy elements from the mushroom and gochujang. Amazing mix of umami and spice! Had more fish than I excepted for an appetizer which was a pleasant surprise. - Banchan of the day: okay, so one of the stars of the show! I absolutely loved all of them but highlights were the kimchi (best kimchi I've had), the eggplant dish, as well as the potato salad. It was evident they used incredibly high quality ingredients and the quantity is generous when you split with another person. Very filling and flavorful. - Ssam: another amazing dish... my mouth still waters at the thought. Tender brisket, with an umami and caramelized glaze that paired nicely with the fermented ssamjang. The cool and fresh lettuce was the perfect pairing to wrap this in to balance out some of the hot and umami flavors. We also used some of the rice that came with our Banchan to eat this with. Rich, comforting, but not too heavy. 11/10! - Tteokbokki: the reason I wanted to come here initially. This was a work of art. The tteokbokki came out steaming hot, and had a chewy texture. The gochujang sauce was spicy but sweet which perfectly contrasted the salty melted cheese which was burnt in some areas and had a nice crisp to it. Absolutely delicious! The onions on top were also amazing and added a little tangy sweetness which really tied all the flavors together (by no means remove the onions). Another hit! - Sesame mochi cake: after one bite, this climbed up my list of favorite desserts in the city. Chewy, buttery, nutty, and not too sweet. It is the perfect dessert in my eyes. The mochi texture was exquisite, and the crunchy sesame seeds as well as the soybean powder added an earthy, roasted, and nutty essence to this that really deepened the flavors. I would come back exclusively for this. Overall, I really enjoyed my dinner at Sunn's and have no doubt I want to come back in the future. The menu is small but everything is executed to perfection. You can tell they pour their hearts into the food; the care, the tradition, the presentation, the ingredients... all are exceptional. I appreciated the honesty, practicality, and warmth of the service. It made it feel like a very down-to-Earth establishment. The ambiance is super cute and perfect for a date. I highly recommend you try this place if you have the chance. Thanks for the amazing meal!

I am SO glad we did. The vibe drew us in, they had great music bumpin from the outside, it looked lively and welcoming. Let me tell you- I would have skipped dinner and just stayed here all evening if it was my choice! But alas, my husband wanted a bit more to eat. But let me tell you- their knowledge of wine is PRISTINE! I can't tell you what white wine we had but they captured our tastes perfectly. We also shared a bruschetta and it was deliciouso! I love how friendly the staff was here and how unpretentious it all was. Next time we are in NYC- we will definitely make a point to come visit Rake!

First I'll start with the wine - we ended up trying all three happy hour wines (HH until 7), which the tables favorites were the white and we ended up getting a bottle to split once HH ended (but I really enjoyed the other vino verde option). It was incredibly refreshing and paired well with the many tinned fish options. As you'd expect - it's a pretty massive selection and there is bound to be a varietal and glass for any palate. It's also attached to a wine store - so it's fine to see all the bottles when peaking over. Food-wise - this is where it was hit or miss, they have a pretty extensive menu (with a whole tinned fish section!) and we ended up ordering the buratta on focaccia (buratta was excellent, focaccia was too dense for my tastes), mushroom truffle crostini (way too salty), the flatbread with sliced kielbasa (was fine), halloume (table favorite ), tinned sardines in lemon oil (delicious), tinned smoked trout (my favorite). Overall the four of us were very full at the end of the meal! The space itself felt very relaxing and rustic, and definitely got busier as the night went on (we got there at 6:50 and left around 9). The service was also fast and attentive - even for the amount of tables they were serving. Overall - I'd definitely go back again, and maybe just focus on the wine and another tinned fish selection!
