I ordered the lamb kebab. It only comes with half a pita! You pay $30 and don't get a whole piece of pita even though one pita would be the right amount of pita for a kebab. Just give me a pita! What is that about? But okay, I ordered an extra pita, I'm still hopeful. But out of the 5 pieces of lamb in my kebab, two were *grisly*! They don't give you a sharp knife, so you kind of have to bite off pieces; but when a piece is grisly you can't tear off a piece and end up with a full piece in your mouth, chewing for many minutes around the grisly center. Everyone knows what this is like and it's to be expected in life, but NOT at a high-end restaurant where you've paid a significant margin above the average meal, and don't even get a full pita. Came here on a sunday morning for brunch with a reservation for 2. It didn't seem super busy though, so walk ins are probably very doable. We ordered the whipped feta and pistachio dip, as well ad the fried halloumi and the shakshuka. The dip came with 2 pitas, and the shakshuka came with one. I personally didn't really love the fried halloumi, although I know it's popular. I found it to be too oily, and not super flavorful. I really liked the tomato and cauliflower of the shakshuka though. I also found the cilantro flavor in the dip to be good. We recently tried this Mediterranean spot for Saturday brunch. We didn't have a reservation, but we knew they keep a few bar seats open for walk-ins, so we were confident we'd find two seats. Luckily, we were seated at the bar immediately, which was a great start. The bar staff were incredibly warm, welcoming, and accommodating, which made the experience even better. We weren't in the mood for cocktails, so we ordered the Pomegranate Fizz and Moroccan Mint Iced Tea -- both were decent, though not particularly memorable. For food, we started with the Whipped Feta + Pistachio dip served with two pitas. This was definitely the star of our meal -- the pistachio flavor was rich and delicious. We also ordered the Mediterranean Plate, which was fresh, flavorful, and very satisfying. The Za'atar Fries were pretty good as well and complemented the meal nicely. The overall vibe was lively and inviting, perfect for a relaxed brunch. Our bill came to $72 before tip, which we felt was quite reasonable for the quality and portions. Oh my goodness, this is now one of my favorite restaurants. If you love Mediterranean/Middle Eastern flavors, you will hopefully love Shuka as much as I did! I visited with a party of 5 for brunch and we ordered several items to share. We started off with the Chocolate Babka, the Whipped Feta and Pistachio, and the Fried Halloumi. All three were delicious and the pita bread that is served with the whipped feta was phenomenal even on its own. My rankings of these three would be the fried halloumi (I would truly return even for this time alone), then the whipped feta, and finally the babka. All three I would gladly order again on a future visit. As entrees, we shared the Shakshuka, Malawach, and Labne pancakes. Again, all three were amazing and things I would eat again. I would rank these as Malawach, pancakes, and then the Shakshuka, mainly because I found the first two to be more unique dishes that I hadn't tried before. The Malawach was delicious - savory and slightly sweet with a flaky, doughy consistency. The pancakes were also delicious - not overly sweet, and also a very nice dense, cake-like consistency. The shakshuka was also very tasty, but note it has a slight kick in case you are sensitive to spice. The restaurant itself is so beautifully decorated with lighting across the ceiling and Mediterranean touches throughout. Our service was also great - we were checked on frequently and our plates were replaced often to allow us to eat without mixing the sweet and savory items. I wish I had this spot back home in Florida to visit. However, I now have a new repeat restaurant for when I find myself in the city next and I will be sharing it with my friends. Shuka seems so busy and popular it hardly needs another great review, but absolutely merits it. Locals can get take out and there seems to be some seating at bar, but definitely a good idea to get reservations. The restaurant seating is cramped, but comfortable. It is also kind of loud, buzzing with energy. Service was shockingly fast and friendly. We had our drinks quickly and then the appetizers followed. They only have a few wine choices, including some from the Mediterranean. I had a nice glass of red. For the appetizer, we had this whipped feta and pistachio dip that was phenomenal. The pita bread was thicker than I am used to, but nice. The salad was very good also. For the main dish, we had the beef and lamb kebabs. These were so delicious, cooked just perfectly with great flavor. They are served meant to be shared. We were full after this, but I wish I had more room. Really nice brunch place offering quality eastern Mediterranean cuisine. Tunisian Breakfast ($25) - Hummus and chickpeas were good and the runny eggs were cooked nicely. The beef and lamb merguez (similar to meatballs) were surprisingly flavorful. I did feel like the portion size was a bit on the small end for the price though. Chocolate Babka French Toast ($14) - As delicious as it sounds. The pomegranate was a nice unique touch. The interior of the restaurant is very nicely decorated and it's sort of split into multiple sections: a bar area, traditional dining area, and back area which almost resembles and indoor courtyard. The staff are friendly and service speed is pretty quick. Be aware that this place gets super busy, so there will likely be a wait if you just try to walk in. Overall, my my main issue was just with the portion size / value but other than that, I had a very pleasant experience and would recommend Shuka to anyone looking for a Mediterranean brunch in the area. read more

Returned to Shuka to try more of their food and was delightfully surprised that the starters/dips portion of the menu changes! Ordered the newly added tahini which had honey and crispy chickpeas and it was so delicious. We also had the hummus which had roasted grapes? Amazing. And their pita is perfectly warm and fluffy. For starters we got the fattoush salad (a must order) and for mains we got the steak kebab which was perfectly grilled to a medium rare. Sat in the front of the restaurant (in front of the bar) instead of the back of the restaurant (with string lights). It was still the cozy, welcoming and intimate setting as I remembered. Service is more friendly than ever. Our waiter diligently and thoroughly reviewed the menu with us when we had questions and allergy concerns. My favorite thing to order at mediterranean restaurants is all the dips and the whipped feta + pistachio and hummus were delicious. I also loved the fried halloumi which was rich but so good with a crispy breaded exterior. For mains we shared the classic shakshuka and chicken shawarma. Shakshuka was nice and bright, perfect for dipping the warm pita bread in and I liked the addition of okra in the sauce. The chicken shawarma was super tender and the white sauce on top with great creamy touch. Finally we got the walnut baklava cinnamon rolls to share and ended up splitting one roll as we were so full from the other dishes. It was great when we took it home though for a sweet treat later. Seating was a bit tight, but Luis, our friendly server made it a pleasant stay here and was quick to take our oder which included a perfectly delicious Fried Halloumi ($15) with a very tasty Spice Yogurt Za'atar, Green 'Shakshuka' ($22), Spit Roasted Chicken Shawarma ($26), and Potatoes and Pita for our little one. But I enjoyed it all and would order it all again. -Baklava Cinnamon Rolls: I saw this has mixed reviews, but I thought they were delicious. You get 3, which is a crazy deal. I don't know if they necessarily tasted like baklava, but they're delish. Soft, doughy cinnamon-y, buttery, warm, and not too sweet. -Whipped Feta & Pistachio: comes with 2 big soft pitas. Recommend! -Falafel: comes with 5. I'm not falafel expert, but these may be the best ones I've had. And is a great combo with the whipped feta. -Fattoush Salad: fresh and light. We almost ordered the fried halloumi dish as well and our server was kind enough to let us know the salad also comes with it (3 big pieces). I cannot speak more highly about the food, the atmosphere, and the service at Shuka. It's absolutely a staple whenever I visit New York. The Mediterranean twist on every dish brings out such incredible depth in the flavors. I started with their Turkish cold brew, which didn't need any cream or sugar. The coffee's bold flavor really stood out on its own. We kicked things off with a spread of appetizers including the fried halloumi, whipped tahini, and the chocolate babka French toast. Everything was so fresh and flavorful I could have stopped there and been completely satisfied. For my main, I ordered the fried halloumi salad which came with a vibrant vinaigrette that tied everything together beautifully. We also shared an extra order of baklava cinnamon rolls at the table, which were just the right amount of sweet to end the meal. This was actually my second time dining here, and I already find myself counting down the days until I can go back. He made the entire evening feel so special and truly elevated the whole experience to a 100/10. It ended up being the best birthday dinner ever, and Chris was a huge part of why. Oh Shuka, When you first opened I adored you. But I kept getting taken on dates here by different guys. Totally understand, because the food was very good, from the shawarma, muhammara, halloumi, labne, and taramasalata and beyond. Fast forward to now and I enjoy posting up at the bar for their amazing wine, cocktails, and apps on their 'sleepier' days. The servers and bartenders are always friendly and will give you recs on what is good that day to order. The decor is quite casual (interior reminds me of 'The Smith' and 'The Meatball Shop) yet with a smidge of Mediterranean flair. Went for brunch and it lived up to the hype. We went with a group of 8 with reservations at 1:30 on a Sunday and we still had to wait a bit but it wasn't bad. They're cocktails are interesting flavors and pretty tasty! The only bad one was the byblos (gin, sherry, aquavit, Riesling and dill) since it just tasted like lemonade. I also got the Turkish cold brew which was a lightly sweetened and spiced coffee. Really good. For good we tried the whipped tahini, chicken shawarma and the green shakshuka. The texture on the tahini was crazy smooth. The honey was a nice balance to the tahini and it didn't taste bitter at all. The green shakshuka was so fresh with the herbs and I loved the tang from the yogurt. My partner loved his chicken shawarma and it was a big size. Others at my table got some other dishes that I talked like the whipped feta/pistachio, the spring pea salad and the fried halloumi. All of them were amazing. Mediterranean is my favorite cuisine and this place hits the mark. We ordered skewers, falafel and a variety of dips. My favorite was probably the pistachio dip that we ordered. The texture was perfect and the flavor was amazing. I also enjoyed this food too because it didn't feel too heavy after eating it. I went with my husband and we felt that sharing a couple of kebabs, falafel and dip were plenty to share. The ambiance felt a little more upscale than casual but still very approachable. After eating here I was raving to my friend about it and they let me know that Shuka is the sister restaurant of Shukette. So if you're having trouble getting a reservation there I'd try to come here too! I think Shuka has a more casual feel to it compared to Shukette but both were equally amazing. read more

One of the main purposes for my visit to NYC this spring was to try and learn different Middle Eastern/Mediterranean dishes. The first such restaurant I tried was Shuka. The starters was great but the entree, and some other things were disappointing. I ordered the Roasted Carrots to start. It was basically roasted carrots situated on honey carrot puree. In this way you experience two ways of cooking carrots: the roasted carrots were savory and juicy, while the puree was sweet and refreshing. Moreover, they used small carrots so that the flavors from the seasoning could get into them quickly. The dish was topped with pickled onions and feta cheese, which added some more layers of flavors. For entree I ordered Arctic Char. Really not worth the price: only two thin slices of fillets, and thus they were of course not medium rare (the default temperature, according to my server) -- at least medium, if not medium well... If they would like to make the fish medium rare, they'd better use thicker fillets. I also want to complain about their pita. Tasted very cheap. Actually almost identical to the Angel Bakery pita sold in Whole Foods. The only difference was that for each small pita they charge $2, while you pay $1 at Whole Foods. Flatbreads in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine are as important as bread in an American/Italian/French restaurant, it is a staple food that people often have with other dishes. So it is insane that they use such low quality stuff and still charge so much money! read more

Our server was very friendly and gave us an introduction to the menu when we were having trouble deciding what to order. She also checked in regularly to make sure we had what we needed. The inside was nicely decorated and larger than expected. For food we ordered the labne and falafel as appetizers. Both were very delicious, the labne was creamy yet light and well balanced with the toppings for a perfect mix of savory and sweet. We both enjoyed it, it was the right amount of spice and the egg yolks were perfectly runny. I keep coming back for the fabulous dips, the juiciest fried halloumi, and the overall vibe that feels part-mystical, part-group-hug.
