I recently visited Sunmerry for a Yelp event and there were such a huge assortment of pastries to choose from -- savory and sweet! Most people know this place for their bubble tea (especially for the cheese foam at the top)! However, it's the cake and the pastries that make me want to come back here! Their matcha croissant is super delicious and crispy at the top with the hard matcha glaze. They used to have this amazing matcha red bean pudding cake, which was to die for -- hoping they bring it back! A really pleasant bakery right next to 99 Ranch and other stores. The bakery goods come out fresh and at certain time frames so you are guaranteed high quality pastries. May I dare say the best bakery shop in central jersey?! I've bookmarked this place for quite some months now and finally got the chance to stop by and check out the goods. Upon entering with my kids, my fat greedy self wanted to stuff everything carbohydrates I see. Oh, damn, here goes my diet. They have matcha, taro, chocolate, almond, Oreo, coconut, custards...you name it, they have it type of pastries flavors. I got the almond croissant and coconut pastry. The almond croissant was moist and fluffy flakes with the right amount of sweetness. One bite and I'm hooked....yeah, sorry kids, mama isn't sharing. The coconut with raisin bun tasted good and my kids enjoyed it too. We also bought the mixed fruit cake for my husbands birthday and it was delicious. The cake was sponge cake with whip cream and assorted fresh fruit toppings and slices of white chocolates shavings on top of all the whip cream area. Inside fillings is pudding and peaches. I will be coming back here no doubt. I also registered to become a member so each time I shop here I can collect points for the next visits. I was so exited when I found Sunmerry Bakery. It was well known Taiwanese bakery in taiwan. All the bread is fresh made . All the bread was very soft, and the flavor was very similar the one I had in taiwan. All of us vote the GARLIC PARSLEY the best. Simple flavor but taste amazing! The taro cake, full of taro flavor with soft cake outside but middle part was bit dry. Brioche was awesome too! Crispy outside with buttery, soft inside. I can finish whole bread myself!! read more

I came here because my out-of-town friend got a special request from her sister to bring back boba egg tarts from here. Sadly, they were sold out so I ended up buying 6 cream puffs (Matcha, Oreo and Tiramisu) and 2 egg tarts. My friend got a few cream puffs and other pastries. I'm not sure if it is because I came at the end of the day but the pastries were disappointing! Cream puffs - The pastry part taste stale and the cream was hard and not creamy. It tasted like they were refrigerated for days. Each of the flavors all tasted the same. There were no distinct matcha or tiramisu flavor. I would not get this again. Egg tarts - These were okay. It tasted like an average egg tart. My friend did like some of her pastries so I would go back to try other things and attempt to get the boba egg tart. My cousin brought me here for the first time while I was visiting her at school. I wish there was an Asian bakery like this around me *hint hint*, please open one up in North Jersey! The pastries are pretty darn good and reminds of me of being in SoCal at 85 Bakery. It was also my first time trying Happy Lemon which is planted right inside. Yum cheese-covered topping! I liked how the tea was not overly sweet or powdery like it is at other bubble tea spots. The quality of the pastries and bubble tea is really good. The pineapple cake was pretty good but not the best that I've had - of course ones from Taiwan are the best. Service was pretty quick, prices are reasonable. read more

My friend told me about this bakery and how great it is. So I decided to make a trip the following day because I'm always down for some good fresh Asian bakery. When I got there in the morning, there was already a line outside and due to COVID, there was a limited people allow inside the door. When I got to the store, I wanted to get everything but I controlled myself to the best I can. Some of the pastries I got were the green tea croissant, cheesecake, black sesame bun, French twist, chocolate chip bun, taro bun, and green tea oreo chiffon. Everything tasted fresh and I enjoyed almost all the pastries. I also got a passion fruit drink. I'm glad this place sells boba tea too. Came for the Hokkaido cream cake and got much more. Definitely a place you want to go if you want a nice way to treat thy self. The croissants look amazing and the almond one was very good. I also got a piece of strawberry shortcake to stay and eat there and it was really light and fluffy and exactly what I wanted, it was great after lunch at the Ugly Dumpling which is in the same complex. This place filled me with joy! Came on a Saturday afternoon and picked up a bunch of pastries as well as drinks. I had been so deprived of boba drinks that we went back here twice in the same day, after grabbing lunch at the 99 Ranch. Thankfully the cashier didn't make it weird. The tea was so good and the boba was the right consistency and sweetness that I think would be agreeable to most people. The quality was the same as I've experienced at Happy Lemons in the Bay Area. I'm always worried hag bakeries will be out of the good stuff in the afternoon, but it wasn't the case here. While we were there, the staff was constantly restocking the shelves. All the pastries we picked up tasted fresh. A number of people were hanging around and working on laptops, but there were still seats available. However, the turnaround was quick and by the time we finished picking out our pastries and ordering our drinks, seats opened up. The place is very loud so I'm not sure why I saw some people studying there but hey, to each his own. DRINKS: We got 2 black house coffees and 1 strawberry green tea with lychee: see picture for our exact order. The coffee was just okay, nothing special though I didn't have high hopes to be honest. Our strawberry jasmine tea with lychee was very good! Normally I feel terribly sorry if I make such a complicated order with numerous specifications but here they ask how much ice and sugar you want which I really appreciated! It's like they knew I was super picky with my drink orders. The 50% sugar was perfect. It was slightly sweet which is how we like it. PASTRY: My sister absolutely LOVES the green tea croissant. My mom goes there just to pick them up for her. I think it's decent, but I'm not obsessed with them. We also got the matcha cream puff and I thought it tasted good. It has a strong matcha flavor but I like strong matcha flavors in my food and drinks so it worked for me. The only negative was the bread tasted like they used yesterdays leftovers and filled it with cream. I wish it was fresher but the cream part I truly enjoyed so I would order again. **pastries run out so if you want the best selection, don't go at night** TIP: sign up for their rewards system. There is absolutely no signage explaining how it works so here it is - for every $12 you spend, you get 1 point. You can redeem 3 points at a time for $1 off. Now, it's not $12 per visit, it's $12 TOTAL. So if you spend $2 one visit, $3 the next you now have $5 in your balance. Each visit accumulates until you reach the $12 and then you get a point. This is nice since who the heck is gonna spend $12 per visit? Still not a great system since it would take $36 just to get $1 off. But better than nothing. read more

Cute little bakery that originated from Taiwan. Super similar to Paris baguette. Love that all the items are indivualky wrapped as opposed to just sitting in the open. There were 4 tables for people to sit and eat in the corner and a bench for people waiting on their drinks. Suoer crowded on the weekends. My face bubble tea is the taro milk with pudding and jelly (nata de coco). The only reason why I knocked a star off is bc it's a typical asian bakery. And bc its least likely there will be seating available (which is a good thing? Meaning their shiet is good!) Otherwise, it's super good and I def recommend. Their salted cheese tea is to die for. Perfect ratio of cheese to tea. I keep coming back for their green tea and black tea, for using real brewed tea rather than crappy powdered tea. Baked good are 100% fresh daily. The black sesame donut is generously filled with black sesame and perfectly crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. I was wary of coming here before because I tried my friend's Strawberry Green Tea with Salted Cheese Foam and I hated it, so I just assumed the entire bakery would be like that single drink. My first summer Friday at my current job I decided to try the regular Green Tea with Salted Cheese Foam and that's when I truly fell in love. Turns out, I just don't like artificial strawberry flavor in anything. But I am so fortunate I decided to give Sunmerry another chance. Sure salted cheese foam in tea sounds super wack, but you won't regret it! If you're attracted to salty-sweet things then getting the salted cheese foam with regular sugar/ice tea will be perfect for you. You can always adjust the sugar and ice accordingly. The foam does not taste strictly like cheese with the salt being the strongest flavor. But the drinks are not the only good part about this bakery! There is a great array of pastries, baked goods, and desserts! Everything tastes fresh and the croissants have a good balance in flakiness and softness. Whether you're craving something savory or sweet, you'll be pleased either way. The items that are the stand-outs for me agree the Nutella Bread, Cream Puffs, Curry Bread, Oreo Matcha Cake, and Green Tea Croissant. Another positive for me is the affordability. I can order 2 pastries and a drink for under $10, which makes for a cheap, yet filling lunch (or dessert lol). I signed up a a member and I take full advantage of their specials. If I get enough points, I will use the discount, or I'll buy the member discount item of the week. Being a member is free of charge, so no harm in signing up! The area is always clean and the wooden decor helps build the casual yet cool ambiance. If I was a student, this would be a great study spot as this place also has free Wi-Fi. We were walking by and saw soft opening so we checked it out. We just had a heavy lunch so was not able to take full potential of the offerings. They had quite a large variety of buns and pastries. I picked up a 5 inch long coffee bread for 1.00! Also got a huge cream puff for 2.00. I shared the cream puff with 2 other people when we got back to the house. It was full of delicious pastry cream in the middle and the puff itself still had a nice crunchy texture to it. The cream had just the right amount of vanilla flavor and not too sweet. I will definitely go back for this item, especially when happy lemon is available! The coffee bread I had the next morning and it was delicious as well. Nice coffee flavor and again not too sweet. I was craving salty, so I went for the garlic bread with cheese and parsley. My uncle also recommended the taiwanese sandwich in the fridge. Both items were really good! I especially liked the sandwich, filled with egg, cucumber, pork sung, and mayo? Unfortunately the worst part was the boba :( I usually love Happy Lemon! but the tapioca was soft and almost mushy. A pretty great Asian American bakery and bubble tea place to get a variety of baked goods and teas in the Edison area! I believe the store is a mix of local baked goods and the Happy Lemon franchise. For those who aren't familiar, Happy Lemon is a Taiwanese bubble tea brand that expanded throughout Asia and produces bubble tea with the famous salted cheese topping. The flavors are top notch and reasonably priced! The variety of desserts are exceptional! I personally enjoy coming here whenever I am in New Jersey looking for a familiar Asian bakery. The quality is top notch! I also like that they are open at reasonable times and cater to groups of people- especially kid-friendly! Accepts card. Lots of seating. Bathroom at the back. Friends were raving about this place and it honestly lived up to the hype. Sunmerry functions like a typical Asian bakery - grab a tray, use tongs to grab what you want and then they'll total and wrap everything up at the cash register. I've been to numerous bakeries as such but I didn't have a single complaint about any of the pastries we grabbed here. Everything checked out in texture, taste, and appearance. The chicken cheddar was the group favorite. If you've had a Costco chicken bake, imagine one but with softer bread. I also quite liked the salted cheese cake slice, egg tarts, and the garlic bread. Sunmerry has been awesome during the quarantine days. I'm so glad they are open to provide their delicious cakes for all occasions. I find myself craving for their cakes whenever there's a reason to celebrate, "oh, let's get a Sunmerry cake for __'s birthday, Father's Day, etc." Also, they are really busy that there's always a line outside of the bakery at any time of the day. They have put good measures to follow social distance guidelines so only 4-5 people are allowed in the shop. I have not waited in line because my friend recommended me to call and make the order ahead of time or order online for pick up. That was probably the best tip if you don't prefer waiting.
