A pretty great Asian American bakery and bubble tea place to get a variety of baked goods and teas in the Edison area! I believe the store is a mix of local baked goods and the Happy Lemon franchise. For those who aren't familiar, Happy Lemon is a Taiwanese bubble tea brand that expanded throughout Asia and produces bubble tea with the famous salted cheese topping. The flavors are top notch and reasonably priced! The variety of desserts are exceptional! I personally enjoy coming here whenever I am in New Jersey looking for a familiar Asian bakery. Friends were raving about this place and it honestly lived up to the hype. Sunmerry functions like a typical Asian bakery - grab a tray, use tongs to grab what you want and then they'll total and wrap everything up at the cash register. I've been to numerous bakeries as such but I didn't have a single complaint about any of the pastries we grabbed here. Everything checked out in texture, taste, and appearance. The chicken cheddar was the group favorite. If you've had a Costco chicken bake, imagine one but with softer bread. I also quite liked the salted cheese cake slice, egg tarts, and the garlic bread. Sunmerry has been awesome during the quarantine days. I'm so glad they are open to provide their delicious cakes for all occasions. I find myself craving for their cakes whenever there's a reason to celebrate, "oh, let's get a Sunmerry cake for __'s birthday, Father's Day, etc." Also, they are really busy that there's always a line outside of the bakery at any time of the day. They have put good measures to follow social distance guidelines so only 4-5 people are allowed in the shop. I have not waited in line because my friend recommended me to call and make the order ahead of time or order online for pick up. That was probably the best tip if you don't prefer waiting. So far we've been just passing by this Asian bakery without thinking much about it, but finally we got to try it. We were there close to closing time, but they still have lots of selections. Some of the items are discounted (e.g., to become 3 for $6), but they don't have deeper discounts like in non-gourmet Chinese bakeries as they near closing time. Price is on the higher side, comparable to other gourmet Asian bakeries such as Paris Baguette or Tous Les Jours by H-Mart. The puffs are crisper and breads tastier. I personally like their shiitake mushroom and cheese danish, chicken cheddar, and taro waltz breads. Definitely have to try the other selections! This is definitely a welcome installation of a good West Coast bakery (Still wishing that there's a 85 Degree bakery nearby though :-) read more

There's so many Asian bakeries in Edison,NJ now. I have always gone to Paris Baguette. Although it's overpriced, I feel that their quality was always superb. I was always a loyal customer. But through the years the quality and taste is not the same. I recently discovered Sunmerry Bakery! Everything ranges from $1.90-2.60 for the bread. The slice cakes ranges around $4.95. The whole cake ranges from $25-36. It's conveniently located at a shopping center next to TJ MAXX. Here are the bake goods I have tried: Chocolate croissant: it's a butter croissant inside is chocolate, the good type of chocolate that melts in your mouth! Nutella Bun: yum! This is my boyfriends favorite. It's semi chewy and the inside is soft chewy while the outer layer is hard but good hard. It will not hurt your teeth I promise. But it does not taste like the real Nutella. I suggest adding real hazelnut to the bread yum. Tuna Bun: I feel that the filling should be more flavorful but they give a lot of filling and the bread is flaky and sweet. Yum! Custard Bun: this is not too sweet which is good. The bread is like those pork buns you get at Asian market. My mom loves this. Coffee bread: it is super big for the price of 2.60 something. I love the top part because it's the most flavorful the bottom is like those soft milk bread that you can pull apart. Must try! Broiche bread: it is not that sweet. Not really my favorite. Go for the coffee bread!! Garlic Parsley Bread: this is like a garlic bread but the bread is much chewier and the outer layer is flaky but get the bread with a lot of green parsley at the top because it contains a mouth watering flavor. Don't forget to get the drink bubble tea from lemon whatever (I forgot the name). Please!!!! I know it sounds weird to add salted cheese, but I promise you it is sooo good with anything you order! I wish they would open a Sunmerry bakery and bubble tea house in Chicago! This is a Taiwan based franchise that's has the best bread selections and best bubble teas! Their teas are fresh and smells great as well as taste great, unlike some which are bland. My friend got a coffee with cheese drink, which sounds crazy but is in fact a wonderful combination! I'm a huge fan of Sunmerry though yes their prices are a bit high. I think it's worth the quality of their baked goods and yes, let's go ahead and compare them to Paris Baguette. I feel Sunmerry has better drink offerings but it's a pretty close tie in the baked goods department. They offer different kinds of items and also similar items so it just depends on what your fav bakery items are and why. Either way I think it's worth a try if you haven't had Sunmerry before! The roast pork bun with the sweet topping is quite good though you will be paying a whopping $2.50 for it..it's pretty worth it for a once in a while treat. A slice of the cake will run you $5 which in all fairness is a bit high as well but hey, I went for it anyway. Though if the prices were a tad bit lower this place would easily earn 5 stars from me and they'd probably know me by first name. So my waistline is thankful for the slightly higher pricing to deter my visits. read more

We randomly walked by this place as we were walking from ranch 99 to tjmaxx and were elated to find another Asian bakery. We ended up buying quite a few things which, sadly to say, were too excited and forgot to take pictures before we ate it. I much better prefer this bakery compared to the Paris baguette by the hmart. Everything had much more flavor. My favorite was the green tea pastry, which was a very light, flaky pastry. We also loved the cheese and ham pastry. The cheese on top added a different touch to the normal ham and cheese Chinese bun as it was baked to a crisp. The coffee roll was also another favorite and for only $2.60, it was quite a steal. We also tried their bubble teas, which aren't much different than other tea places. They had amazing cakes though, mango mousse, cheesecake, tiramisu, etc. Can't wait to go back and try more! read more

They have taken precautions such as distancing, cleaning trays and rings between use, and use a shield between buyers and cashiers. Not only that, the food here is SO good! Finally made it up here. Bought three different roll flavors - rainbow, hazelnut and matcha. The sponge cake is bouncy and flavorful for the most part, the rainbow while pretty is more generic and doesn't really have a flavor per se but the crime filling is still good and not too sweet, the hazelnut was my favorite both the cake and filling were flavorful and the chocolate dip on top was nice, the matcha came through on the cake and probably could have come through even more, filling was also good. Had to try the salted cheese drink, got the green tea. Green tea was good but I didn't really taste the salted cheese much, would definitely be interested to try a different flavor and more of the pastries. read more

I knew SunMerry about three or four years ago but yelpers only took photos on bubble tea or shave ice so it didn't draw my interests. It seems only bubble tea,macaroons or cupcake only matters to people no matter what type of store they are. Because we had too many bad experience on so-called Taiwanese bakeries, including 85C bakery café in Seattle, we only purchased two pieces of green onion bread, one piece coconut bread and one taro swiss roll from SunMerry. On the following morning, we reheat three bread at 375 Celsius about 15 minutes and after first bite, yes, my husband and I both were surprised how these bread taste so......... Taiwan...(I know this is not a correct description). The quality or taste of breads from SunMerry can't compete to those from Yamazaki or E.G-Sain but it has a flavor that will remind you of home. read more

The place is self-serve--grab a tray and tong near the door and start picking! Favorites: -1x Big Cream Puff ($2): It's stuffed generously with a creamy, flavorful, and perfectly sweet filling. The pastry is soft, but still retains a slight chewiness. It's displayed inside the glass case with the cakes next to the counter. -1x Shredded Pork-filled Puff Pastry ($2.20): The pastry was soft and flavorful albeit a bit salty from the pork floss. I'd probably pick this again, though. Good to "A-OK:" -1x Curry bun ($2.20): Had an airy, doughnut-like texture while the curry filling was flavorful but not overpowering. I don't mind getting this again. -2x Mushroom and Cheese buns ($2.20/ea): It was freshly baked, while the cheese, onions, and mushrooms blended well together. It's "A-OK," in my books. -1x Taro and Red Bean bun ($2): The dough is the same as the curry bun, but way too greasy. However, the filling had just the right amount of sweetness. I'd pick this one again. -1x Matcha Croissant ($2.20): Nice and flaky, had a slightly crispy exterior, was generously topped with powdered sugar and sliced almonds, but definitely lacked green tea flavor. Good? It was "A-OK," but I'd probably pick something else next time. No Thanks: -1x BBQ Pork bun ($2.50): The BBQ pork bun was my least favorite. It lacked filling, and I wasn't a fan of the sweet, slightly sugary bread the pork was baked in. We had mixed reviews, but for the most part, the pastries are good. I stopped by on a Monday, so that probably had something to do with the lackluster selection. Perhaps if I stop by on a Friday or weekend, more unique offerings would be available. Stumbled upon this gem of a bakery after visiting 99 Ranch Market near by. I purchased a bunch of pastries and after trying a few, I am a fan! I bought a Green Tea (glazed) Croissant, Nutella Bun, Cream cheese puff, and custard buns. The green tea croissant had a green tea glaze on top and that gave it a crunchy texture. The croissant below was moist and not overly buttery. It had no green tea flavor. The nutella bun and custard buns were delicious. Everything was freshly made actually minutes from purchase. The staff was frequently bringing out new pastries to restock. I'm not sure if it is a common practice but they have sale pastries in store and they are not yesterdays creations. The sale items were a dollar each and they are worth it! If not on sale, the other pastries range from $1.50-$2+. each. Just learned that this is a Taiwanese chain.
