This was a lovely hometown cafe that I discovered during my business trip to Edison New Jersey. It's more of a bakery than an actual cafe, however they have it set-up very nicely and there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy. They offer a vast selection of cakes and pastries, and I had my eye on the coconut tres leches that looked so scrumptious. It was kind of priced a little bit out of my budget today, and I instead got the gourmet chocolate cupcake. I also ordered a homemade iced tea to go with the cupcake, and they both were very delicious. The service was good and the person behind the counter helped me with a smile. This place is for sure not your typical cafe, and it's really geared for short stays. I've passed by Pastry Lu and even window shopped at their old locations numerous times, and I'm sad to say that I only tried their famous tres leches last month! From the first bite, I knew this place would be five stars! Tres leches is one of my favorite desserts, so Pastry Lu really set the bar. My friend had said tres leches was their favorite dessert, so I was on the hunt for a tres leches cake for his birthday. It didn't take long to stumble upon Pastry Lu on Yelp. There were many glowing reviews so I figured I should give it a shot! Ordering a cake was simple and quick over phone, and picking up was even quicker! The beautiful pink and floral decor of the exterior caught my eye, and walking in made me realize how great of a wfh spot this would be. I loved the chalk menus and browsing through the various offerings. As a coffee fanatic, I'll need to take the time to get some. Upon first bites, the tres leches was already a hit with my coworkers and me. Probably the creamiest tres leches I've tried in the central jersey area. It was drenched in milk as it should be. Pastry Lu can also provide birthday toppers (though I was given a Happy Anniversary one in a funny mishap), which also made for a cute present. The shop sometimes has tres leches glass cakes in store, but it'll only be what flavors are available that day. There are also other cakes like cheesecake, tiramisu, etc. I wish there was a list of flavors available somewhere, but this has enticed me to keep coming back and try more. I came back and tried coffee and salted caramel tres leches in a cup, and I still dream about it. You get so much cake at that price point! In the glass cake, it serves 5-6 people but I think I could handle it on my own haha. So far I've tried the traditional and dulce de leche glass cakes, where both were amazing! Dulce de leche is on the sweeter side, so you may want another flavor for a friend with less of a sweet tooth. What a cute little dessert shop in Metuchen! This place specializes in various cakes, cheesecakes, tres leches, cupcakes, and pastries (of course). Walking in, you are greeted by pink wall accents, smooth R&B music, and a wonderful display case of sweets! While I have had people rave about the banana pudding and various pastries here, what was truly irresistible to me were the different flavors of tres leches! I end up going with the Mango Tres Leches, and man, it truly did not disappoint! The mango puree on top was decadent, blending really well the creamy tres leches base. Best part about it is that there is a thin layer of mango puree on the bottom as well, so your last bite will not disappoint. For our friends who are handicap, there is a small step to get into the cafe. Accessible parking is not right at the door, but close by. Parking in general is a little bit of a hassle like any downtown area, but street parking is always around and the parking tower behind the train station. Was looking for a place that sold and makes tres leches! Gf of mine recommended this place. Came here in person to do an inquiry and ended up ordering for Thanksgiving!! Lol and take out. They were closing up shop but they were able to assist. Their Thanksgiving specials were a 40oz traditional tres leches; dulce de leche tres leches; and pumpkin tres leches! This pastry shop is a great addition to the Metuchen community located right across from the Metuchen train station. You can find cupcakes, cakes, croissants and coffee all here. The desserts are delicious - check out my photos for proof as I already ate into this triple chocolate cake (one of my favorites), and the chocolate, caramel and Oreo cake (another dessert you will drool over). None of the dessert's I've tried are made to share - it's that good! I've also tried their traditional tres leches and carrot pineapple, and listen, the chef(s) deserves all the kudos! This bakery may have me empty out my wallet each time I step foot into the shop. The team is friendly and helpful, always ready to answer any questions I have. Just 15 minutes from Staten Island, Pastry Lu is a perfect spot for a little change of pace. Pastries: This may seem obvious since it is in the name, but the highlight here is their pastry prowess. All too often bakeries/patisseries feel stagnant & preoccupied with "staple pastries." Lu bucks the trend offering delicious baked good with unique flavors. My favorite example is their guava & cream cheese croissant. Croissants are ubiquitous, but rather than just making the standard croissant or chocolate Lu offers a complex flavor profile and elevates the croissant. Most impressively Lu did not sacrifice any of the trademark characteristics of the croissant. Light and flaky, deliciously golden & soft/steamy inside. I could expound on some other pastries, but you should go taste for yourself... and thank Lu when you're there she is very kind. Coffee: I thoroughly enjoyed my latte especially when paired with the delicious pastries. Decor: Pastry Lu felt a little like walking into a diorama of a Barbie Cafe, but that may give the wrong impression. The Pink & White theme gives off an impression of cleanliness and Lu's sweet personality. The couch by the window is comfy and looks great in photos - what more could you ask for! Tres leches = $8, Cheesecake = $5.50 Everything was so delicious -- the tres leches were sweet and creamy and the cheesecake texture was on point and the guava provided the right amount of tartness. I usually don't review a place until I've sampled a few different things, but I have to tell everyone about the coconut cookies. If you like coconut, you have to try one of these. They are sweet, puffy, and soft pillows of shredded coconut. The top is toasty with a marinated cherry resting in the center. Good contrast of crunchy and airy. Gluten free too. When you walk inside, the place smells amazing. Savory croissants are decent, feels like a good alternative to a traditional breakfast. Don't forget to try the Colombian coffee too. I'd rather get coffee here than any of the regular coffee shops in downtown Metuchen. Also, the customer service is very good. There was a super-friendly man behind the counter every time I've been there. It's a small space. I only wish that the place were big enough to have a few more tables to sit.
