Hopia Baboy and Ube Cheese Pandesal
Susanna C.

Filipino bakery! Hopia Baboy is a sweet pastry filled with a savory scallion onion filling, so delicious. The ube cheese pandesal is a purple ube bun with a cream filling. Both were delicious. Lots of other varieties to try!

Ube pandesal with savory cheesy and Ube filling

Yesterday, I had just discovered this place , I didn't know this bakery been here for 25 years !!!! I went hog wild like a kid in the candy store . Normally, I go to asian grocery stories for my Filipino sweet craving but I wanted something fresh. This store may looks small but it's filled with my favorite essentials. When I had a sample of the ube Pandesal with cheese, it was fresh out the oven: I swear I had to buy more to take home. It is sooo soft and creamy:the perfect amount of cream and ube filling. I'm def coming back more often and telling my aunties of this local delicacy.

Ube and ensaymada macapuno....

With aisles packed with stacks of bags containing baked goods that you have to basically walk sideway, this bakery is more of an outlet of their catered items than a full-fledge bakery. The bakery serves all things Filipino, so anything from macapunos to (Chinese) hopias to pastillas and kutsintas (sweet annatto-brown flat cakes for $3 per box) are available. My favs are the langka (jackfruit) hopias and the enseymada macapunos for my sweet tooth ($4 for a box of 4). The lady behind the counter is friendly and provides us with additional details on the ingredients. No-frills bakery with nothing too fancy or special, but they do cater their baked goods to all over NJ! Worth a try if you're in the area and want to taste some Filipino bread.

Pastillas de Leche

I'm a huge fan of Berkeley Bakery's products, so stopping by one of their branches is pretty exciting (for me, at least). Berkeley Bakery specializes in Filipino goodies--from the quintessential pan de sal (regular and stuffed) to their pastillias and various pastries, cakes, and cookies. This bakery, however, is not as appealing as Italian or Portuguese bakeries. The exterior is fine, but inside, the place looks more like a storage area. There is a coffee machine to your immediate right upon walking in, while the majority of packaged products are in the middle of the floor. There is a shelf with packs of pan de sal on the left side, along with some frozen products. At the counter, there are various cookies and and pastries. From what I remember, most of them are not Filipino products. Their pan de sal, fortunately, was fresh. Each pack comes with 10 large buns, which is convenient for me since I usually buy from the Philippine Bread House in JC. I also bought a pack of pastillas, which I thought was delicious. It was not overly sweet--just right. My only gripe about Berkeley Bakery's Highland Park location is that it gets uncomfortably warm inside, which is concerning since some of the products include dairy. Also, they only have side-street parking.

This is my first try to have baked goods here but some of the bread stuff we got tasted dry and probably a couple of days old.

They also offer tea, coffee, and refreshing fruit drinks in the summer. My go-to items are the almond croissant and the coconut buns, but the donuts are flaky and tasty too. They even have a membership program that gives you dollars off your purchases--definitely worth joining if you come often. Overall, if you're looking for a bakery to try, this place is absolutely worth a visit. There's plenty of parking and a few tables where you can sit, relax, and enjoy your treats.

I funny enough heard about this in…read morepassing and not long after, spotted this place in the same shopping center as the 99 Ranch in Edison and I made a pit stop there (hence no drinks) before going on a grocery run. It was at night on a Saturday so many of the shelves were empty but they still had a few things left. Sunmerry appears to be a chain but one that I have never visited before until now so I can't really comment on what they have, but I did manage to grab: MATCHA CLOUD DONUT - This reminded me vaguely of the im donut donuts I tried in NYC. Very soft and pillowy and filled to the brim with a lightly sweet, matcha filling. I honestly don't have anything negative to say about this. RED BEAN MATCHA BAGEL - it's a matcha dough with red bean filling BUT the filling doesn't go all the way around. It goes maybe 65% so if you're splitting this with someone like I did, fingers crossed you both get a decent amount. The bagel was soft and in a bagel shape but it lacked the chew of a bagel. The filling was nice and different but the matcha taste was subtle - if that. Overall, liked the idea, but I wanted more of a bagel chew than what I got and to taste the matcha better. Maybe even have a more even share of the red bean. COFFEE BRIOCHE LOAF - my husband liked this one! Which is good because I got it for him. This is quite good. Soft, lightly sweet with a coffee top. We ate this maybe 12 hours after and much of the top layer had "melted" and gotten on the cellophane but it was still delicious. Perfection. I definitely scraped off the coffee bits from the cellophane so it didn't go to waste. PINEAPPLE BUN W/ MILK - I grabbed this one thinking there was a filling inside and there wasn't. I don't know if the bun was placed in the wrong location or the name is telling me the bun isn't vegan but it's a good pineapple bun but without anything inside, it was a tad dry. Maybe it needs a pat of butter like they do in HK. MELON PAN - I haven't had this in a good long while so I got it for fun. It's smaller than the pineapple bun and the topping is a little sweeter - I remember crunching on sugar crystals. It's not bad but also not filled so it's a tiny bit on the dry side. The place has tables to the side where you can enjoy your goodies. I didn't stay too long but they definitely serve drinks and delicious cakes as well. The staff were nice and the place seemed on the dim side. Fingers crossed I can go back during the day to get a better idea of what they have! In the meantime, this is a good place for an Asian bakery fix. They do list out ingredients under the names of their baked goods so that's awesome! From what I could see, their baked goodies are likely not vegan or gluten-free friendly, though...

If you know, you know. The pastries here are absolutely worth the detour--and honestly, wherever I see a Paris Baguette, I do pull over. That includes locations I've visited in Northern California, North Brunswick, New Jersey, Atlanta, Georgia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and even the one here in Charlotte down in Pineville. It's a bit of a drive for me, but when I'm in that area, I always make a point to stop in and pick up a couple of their delicious croissant-donut pastries and marzipan or almond croissants. That's the beauty of this bakery--it's a chain, yes, but the consistency is what keeps me coming back. I have yet to be disappointed. Of course, I had to stop at this Hilton Head location--and I didn't come empty-handed. Food connects people, and bringing pastries to your host is always a winning move. I picked up three different varieties of their famous croissant-donut style pastries (similar to the well-known cronut): * Chocolate * Tiramisu * Mango And I added two large almond croissants that were beautifully filled, flaky, and indulgent. Everything looked fresh, full, and irresistible. The setup inside is easy and efficient. It's self-serve: you grab a tray, line it with parchment, use the tongs, and select whatever catches your eye--from baguettes to cakes to coffee drinks. Checkout was quick, Apple Pay was accepted, and the whole experience felt smooth and well organized. The space was clean, friendly, and inviting, with plenty of outdoor seating. Bottom line: Whenever you see a Paris Baguette on your radar, pull over. It's dependable, delicious, and perfect for picking up pastries to share--or to treat yourself. For me, it's one of those rare places that delivers the same quality every single time, no matter the city--and that kind of consistency is something I truly appreciate as a traveler and lifelong foodie.

La Bon had a form online where you can specify what you want and put pictures for inspiration. It was super easy and simple to do! I needed the cake by Sunday morning so I decided to place the order on Thursday since it was a holiday weekend and I knew they might be busy with orders. I put in a request for a 8" round cake with vanilla cake and chocolate custard filling. I submitted the request on Thursday afternoon and got a response by Thursday evening that I needed to call or come in person by Friday afternoon to officially place the order and pay. I called on Friday and spoke to Tina over the phone, she was really nice and took her time explaining the order to me and answering questions. I felt for a custom cake with this level of detail it was well worth the price which came out to about $80. I picked up my cake on Sunday with no issues and was shocked by how beautiful the cake came out. It was exactly what I wanted it to look like, the color was a perfect match to the picture I sent in and to top it all off, it was DELICIOUS! The cake was so moist and fluffy and the chocolate custard was just perfect. 1000% will be coming back here for more custom cakes- I couldn't have asked for a better experience and it was exactly what we wanted to celebrate for a 25th birthday.
