The service lady walked away as soon as I was next. The sausages are undercooked, for the coffee she might as well have served me whipped cream, gave me out dated rice pudding. Pan de bono are tiny and empanadas also- they are over priced. Go to a different Colombian bakery. Don't buy here. Service is bad. read more

Came here on a Saturday morning to grab some breakfast to go. This was our first time there so we didn't really know what to expect. The employees at the register was very friend and asked us if we were ready to order. She answered all questions on what things were. We ended up ordering the guava cheese bread/loaf, a chicken empanada, beef empanada, and Colombian sausage. The bread was nice and soft with a good amount of filling that was not too overpowering. I love the combination of guava and cream cheese together. The empanadas were both good. The outside was nice a crisp and the filling was moist and tender. The salsa verde that it came with was bright and spicy and complimented the richness of the empanadas. The sausage had a snappy casing and the meat was juicy. It came with a small piece of potato which helped balance the salt. Overall I thought the food we ordered was very good and very fairly priced. I love this place! It is a little Colombian bakery and restaurant hidden off of Rt27 in Edison. The baked goods there are warm and fresh every time I go there. It's a great place for breakfast and brunch. I love the authentic Colombian pastries and the drinks. Pandebono and Bunuelos are soft and light. I really enjoyed their Desayuno Paisa with juicy Colombian chorizo, seasoned scrambled eggs, and an arepa con queso. One of the drinks I enjoyed there is Mazamorra. I will say for a non-Colombian it was an acquired taste but now I love it and look forward to getting it whenever I go. They also have fresh tropical juices there that you can mix with either milk or water. I am looking forward to trying them all. Please go check this place out. I highly recommend it. The staff is very helpful in explaining some of the foods, pastries, and drinks they offer. This place got a lot of good word for being an authentic Columbian restaurant. And great none greasy empanadas, great fresh food. For a party, support the local, and ordered 40 empanadas. I called on Wednesday for a Friday order. A gentleman had to call back to confirm there were no language barrier and I did in fact call to order 40 empanadas. Which I thought was great for the follow up. Also, understanding if heard incorrectly, a waste of products on there end. Come Friday, I called in the afternoon to confirm that 3pm was still a good pick up time. They stated that yes, everything was ready for 3pm. Didn't have to question it. They told me my name, my specific order, and pick up time. Guess what! 3pm comes and know one knows what the hell im talking about. Maybe it was language? Eventually they figured out that yes my order never made it. Even though I got full confirmation on my order earlier in the day. I'm pressed for time and needed to make sure everything went right and it didn't. Apologies and was told it would be 10 minutes to get my order ready. Closer to 25. And from the looks of it, to make up for time, they grabbed all the under the heat lamp empanadas to fill my order. Paid. And no discount or another apology for there failure on delivering a confirmed order. Pathetic. I am a big supporter of good food. Yet, I'm glutinous and enjoy mediocre food. But no matter how great your product is, if you service sucks, if your service is horrible, if you can't serve period, the food doesn't matter. While dining next door, I noticed this mom and pop Colombian bakery. While looking at the Yelp pics, people were raving about an interesting looking round donut that I have never seen before. As I step into the tiny shop, I pull up the donut pic and showed it to who I believe is the owner. She said, no more, tomorrow. I let out a huge sigh of disappointment. A young gentleman behind the counter asked, would you like to try something similar to that donut? That perked me right up. Sure I said, I trust you. Then I asked which other desserts in the display case is good. He replied, "EVERYTHING" enthusiastically! I told him to choose any three for me. You know when you look at a dessert sometimes and before you even take that first bite that it will be amazing...well, everything here is eye pleasing delicious. As soon as I got into my car, I grab that item the young man recommended. It resembles a biscuit shaped like a duck. As soon as I bite into it, O...M...G!!!! This is probably one of the yummiest things I have eaten this year. No joke! The inside reminds me of the famous malasadas at Leonard's Bakery in Honolulu, but different. Andy, the very helpful and cheerful young man said that they just celebrated their 15th year! I wish them another 100. My only regret as I left the shop were the tres leches cakes that I didn't get. Been here multiple times in the past, but more frequently lately and each time it has been great. The pan de bono is the simply delicious! A must try. The other pastries are great as well. We have tried a variety of the offered selection and enjoyed them all. There are a few small tables to sit down. The price here is very reasonable comparing to nearby Colombian bakeries, always fresh. There is a parking lot, never had issue with parking. Leaving and making a left turn can be a bit difficult bc of the location but not impossible. Service is always friendly. Would recommend for pastry and will def return soon. read more

Columbian bakery and food that is as good as the Columbian restaurants in Elizabeth or Newark. It's hidden in the corner of a small shopping plaza so you can easily miss it while driving. If you do make a quick right and you can enter from the side street. The first time I stopped at the Calima, upon the recommendation of a friend, the lovely women who works there suggested I try the pan de bono (traditional Colombian cheese bread) and they were right, It was wonderful! I have also had the arepas (corn cakes with different fillings and toppings) and they were delicious. The best though to me are the empanadas. They are especially delicious and so inexpensive. I wouldn't hesitate to come here if you don't speak Spanish - they speak English although I don't thaink I saw one non-Spanish speaking patron there while I was waiting. The coffee It's also great as expected at a Colombian restaurant. I haven't been there for breakfast yet, but I am old they Breakfasts are great too. Fresh baked Colombian baked goods at a wonderful price. I couldn't be happier. This place is a cute and clean bakery. It's a little hidden since the plaza is behind a bank but once you find it you'll love it. I order guava bread and their specialty bread with cheese. It was spectacular. This bakery is going to be a regular breakfast place for me, I came here plenty of times already because it's very close to my work and offer very reasonable prices for good food. I haven't tried variety of dishes there but just one so far that is called Desayuno Pais(country breakfast), which includes eggs and a corn bread with cheese(I guess it's the mozzarella cheese) on top of it. You can tell them how you want the eggs to be cooked and I always tell them to make the "Huevos Pericos", the term I recently learned and is a specialty Colombian breakfast eggs which literally means parrot eggs. I'm sure people from that region are well aware of this dish but no need to worry if you haven't heard about it before because it's just chicken eggs scrambled with onions and tomatoes. Aside that I asks to add sweet plantains as an extra and it goes really well with eggs. I also get the sweet corn bread which I think is called "choclo" it's the next best thing they got, it tastes really good with coffee. But when you ask if it can be warned they say it just came out but it's cold bread. The coffee was okay. Also there's this one lady who is so rude it's disgusting. She's was really rude just because I asked her to make sure something was warmed up. She made a face and heated it up to the point that I burned myself. Then I came the next day to get breakfast again and she completely ignored me. Then she tells the other worker "oh I thought you were helping them" after we were standing there for a while but she knew that no one was helping us. Never coming again. read more

Let me begin by saying I really root for this place because of my heritage but this place has let me down. It always strikes me when I see a place taking advantage of people, not that it should matter but especially when doing it to their own people. This place is in a blue collar community and it's shameful how the minimum wage hard working customers that come here are being taken advantage of. I have been coming to this place for 2 years to support this small business but man am I bummed. I can say that the only consistent thing has been never getting charged the same price for the same item. Today I had the daily special and it specifically says it's $8 in the menu they have at the counter. The server charges me $9, hmm. Ok I'm thinking, maybe tax. No. So I ask for the receipt and she charged me $8.41 before tax. Ok you're saying, stop nitpicking, it's only .41 cents, well, multiply that by every customer today....still not onboard? There's more. Take a look at the receipt, they are charging 7% tax. Really? It's been 6.625% for at least 3 years. That's not a mistake and it's being charged to every customer so add that up in multiples and then multiply that by years. I suspect the IRS needs to be notified . Can't really blame this one on Covid. I am embarrassed and ashamed. As a bakery they are good but they need to be good to the community that sustains them and has given them their livelihood. A large majority that come here don't speak English, wouldn't ask for a receipt or even know what the tax rate is. Shame. read more

I'm originally from Elizabeth so I hold Colombian food near and dear to my heart. There are some fabulous Colombian restaurants in Elizabeth so it's really hard for me to compare Calima. But I will say, for a BAKERY, not a full service restaurant, and for a quick fix, it's really not bad. You have to go early if you want some of their more desirable baked goods and empanadas because they run out towards the end of the day. Don't be disappointed, it means they make what they make each day and then it's sold out. With small mom and pop places I come to respect this no waste no overproduced method to their business. Anyway, their baked sweets and desserts are yummy. Their hot entrees ordered to go is really cheap and typically pretty filling.
