I brought the car for washer fluid motor replacement after the website I was directed to suggested that the cost would be approx $142. Tempe Chrysler wanted a $180 inspection fee, so it looked like I found a good value. I was charged $165 and hour x 1.5 hours plus 3 times the retail price of the part plus $21 for fees and shop supplies. How many auto repair shops charge this much per hour? I also have a BMW and don't pay nearly that much there. Disappointing as I hoped this would be a better value shop than the price gouging Chrysler dealership. Up until my unacceptable customer service experience at Sun Devil Auto in Ahwatukee, I have been an 15 year fan of Sun Devil Auto on Bell Road.I had just picked up my vehicle from the Bell Road location after having it serviced. Upon the 42 mile drive back to my home in Ahwatukee my truck died. I called my mechanic and explained what happened, he said might be the fuel pump.I needed it fixed ASAP. We decided that it would be easiest to take it to the Ahwatukee location as it is only 2 miles from my house...Big Mistake! Truck was towed there, while it was in route my mechanic called that location, said who he was, and asked if they could take care of me, Dave told him that they would. Pierre called and said that it was indeed the fuel pump, the truck was ready the next day. After picking it up I prepared for a trip to California the following week. We made it 120 miles towards the California border before the truck died on the I-10. I pulled over called Pierre and told him that the same thing had happened and that I was waiting for a tow, he said "Let us know what happens". We were towed to a repair shop where they were able to diagnose the problem...Fuel Pump! They dropped the tank and I was able to see where the hose had come right off the pump. They where able to put the hose back on, reinstall the fuel tank, and then fire the truck right back up. It ran for 3 minutes and died again! They dropped the tank again, pulled out the fuel pump, and just like before the hose was off, obviously a defective new fuel pump. They were then going to clamp the hose onto the fuel pump, however upon the 2nd reinstallation at the repair shop a plastic fitting broke off. The owner of the shop sent his wife 25 miles to a parts store to get a new fuel pump, mind you this was at 10 PM, thank goodness his friend owned the parts store and met her to reopen. They were able to install the new fuel pump and my wife and I were on our way. The truck ran like a champ the entire way to San Diego then to Los Angeles and back to Phoenix, it is still going strong with the $80 fuel pump that was installed. Upon my return to Phoenix I reached out to Pierre at Sun Devil Ahwatukee and addressed my displeasure with the work that had been performed, and that the original fuel pump they installed was defective. I played phone tag with GM Dave as he was never available when I called. I dropped by to see Dave on the agreed date and time that he would be there, and he had conveniently departed before my arrival. Pierre reassured me that Dave would do the right thing and take care of me, all I had to do was return again the next day and bring in the fuel pump and any receipts that I had from the service that was performed by the small repair shop off of the I-10...Done!I met Dave that Saturday afternoon, provided him with the broken fuel pump, showed him the picture that I took of the fuel pump when it was originally pulled from the tank with the hose detached. He made a copy of the receipt and told me he would personally call me on Monday. Well Monday came and went. I figured I would give Dave another week to get things accomplished,I was never contacted. With that unacceptable response I drove over to the Ahwatukee location the following Monday (that is now 2 weeks after Sun Devil told me they would get back to me) to try to get the situation resolved. I told Dave that I was very disappointed in his lack of professionalism and that he obviously was not a man of his word. He stated that a regional manager would have to reach out to him to take care of the problem. Amazing how nobody from Sun Devil Ahwatukee could be bothered to call, text or email that information.The verdict after waiting another week was that I should have had Sun Devil Auto tow the broken down truck,they tow for free when they perform the work on vehicles...that's news to me. It doesn't state anything about Sun Devil towing anywhere on the receipt, and when I called the Ahwatukee location right after the truck died on the I-10 nobody let me know about the towing then either, obviously imparting that information isn't part of their standard operating procedure. Dave also stated that the non-affiliated repair shop broke the fuel pump and it would not be covered by Sun Devil Auto...What? The fuel pump would have never had a broken fitting if it had worked properly from the start. So now I am out the cost of the fuel pump and labor, plus they also charged me for replacing a fuel filter that was never changed during the original repair. So after paying Sun Devil Auto $929.61 for a defective fuel pump and an unchanged fuel filter I would definitively say they are untrustworthy. Dave eventually emailed me the number to corporate and said that I could take it up with them...Really? I expected the regional manager to get a hold of me and make this right...Still waiting! My elderly car needed some more care. After 14 years the fuel pump gave up. Unfortunately, parts for discontinued cars are a bit pricy. Also, pump was in the gas tank. Not something I wanted to work on myself. Issue was diagnosed and repaired quickly. A month later, car died again and had to be towed back to Sun Devil. Turned out the new pump wasn't working. Replacement pump had same problem. Took two days to find a high resistance electrical connection at the fuse panel. Once found, it was easily fixed. No charge for the additional repair even though not directly related to the gas pump replacement. It's good to know technicians at Sun Devil Auto can fix the hard problems too. I brought my car in here for a transmission issue, and I had them do a couple of test drives with the car on separate occasions. The final verdict from their team of crackerjack experts: I needed a new transmission for $2300. This I found very hard to believe, since the transmission only had about 15,000 (of mostly highway) miles on it. So I took the car somewhere else, and a quick and simple test revealed that all I needed was a new sensor. Problem solved, and the car is still running with the same transmission 159,000 miles later. So my wife and son took his 2016 Mazda 3 to Sun Devil Auto located at 895 Chandler Blvd in Chandler AZ on Saturday 10/10/20. The car was making some rattling noises that increased as the speed increased. They left the car to be inspected. I was called by the mechanic/manager Jeremy a con artist and "salesman" at around 1 pm. He explained to me that the front axel was broken, 3 motor mounts were broken and the lower control arm needed replaced. the total for this work would be $3400 + -. They stated they could not find the axel from their vendors so it had to be purchased from a dealership. I said thank you and that I would come and get the car so we could make our decision on the repair. My wife works for Penske Automotive. She called the service manager at Tempe Honda where we purchased the car. We took the car to the dealer on Tuesday 10/13/20. They inspected the car with the knowledge of Sun Devil Auto's inspection. The end result was and get this...there was a loose locking nut on the axle and as the car sped up and the wheels were turned it would make the accelerated clicking noise...one of the transmission mounts was broken... they also noticed that it needed rear brakes... not noticed by Sun Devil...they tighten the locking nut and tomorrow they will repair the transmission mount and do the brake job... total $428... and this is at a dealership... Sun Devil Auto is about as incompetent as any automotive repair company that I have ever dealt with in my opinion... it makes me wonder how many other women or young adults have went there to get their cars repaired and been given the same treatment I believe my wife and son were given...they should be ashamed of themselves and they are an utter disgrace to the automotive repair industry... I would stay as far away from Sun Devil Auto as you can... and anyone who has had a car repaired there for thousands of dollars I'm hoping it actually needed it and that you weren't ripped off like they tried to do to my family...I also called Jeremy back to verify the repairs needed. He stated again the above assessment. He said he would not give that to me in writing but I could right down what he said... Little frustrated. Went in on Monday to see about an oil change, was advised $17.99 and made appointment for Thursday morning. Said it would take about an hour. Thursday morning I was given a price of roughly $41.99 I believe. It was in the low forties. The price difference was because they said my vehicle required a different oil type, full synthetic. Ok, whatever. When I pick up the car an hour later, it was $51.xx. Even after my $5 yelp coupon the price was still higher than the forty something I was quoted earlier. The initial quote didn't include all the fees. I feel if you're going to give a price, give the out the door total. After having the dealer work on my car and cause an extra 500 bucks in repairs, the guys here are always willing to give me the straight answers on what is wrong, what HAS to be done and what can wait. Fast service and good pricing. Yes there are cheaper places but not that I trust. I will never have anyone else work on my car but Sun Devil on Ray. Not sure about the user that says they don't take appts, I can log right into my car center online and set an appt, plus they remind me when my next services is due and they show me a history with notes of what was done and what I paid for it. I went to this place because my out-of-town father went there and said how nice and friendly they were when he had an oil change. It is also a convenient location. Ray and I10 location. I took my Honda Civic there because I had a gas leak. They got me in and later called me to tell me that I would need to replace the fuel pump and that there was a hole in it...no problem but the cost was almost $700. I said go ahead and when I got the car back the smell of gas was still present. I took it back and they said they fixed it... still smelled of gas. Took it back a third time..still smelled of gas. By the fourth time they fixed a clip that was coming off and apologized and offered me a free oil change for the trouble. This week I had a guest in my car and they mentioned they could smell gas in the car.... My opinion on this place is that the guys at the counter are nice and friendly but the technicians/mechanics do not take pride in their jobs enough to get the job done right. Also to me, this does reflect to the management level about quality control. The guys at the top are ultimately responsible for the work that leaves their shop and if you have to take a car back 4 times to get it done....well you know...not so good. After AAMCO tried to rip us In 10 minutes Dave gave me a written estimate for $377.44 and the leak was fixed, and the neutral switch replaced in less than a day. Was in for an oil change on April 6th, 2012. The service writer called me back to the shop and showed me what he said was a leaking rack and pinion steering boot. Two-3 large drops (about to fall) of a nearly clear (amber/golden), clean fluid was observed on the right side boot of the steering rack. I was told that the drops were power steering fluid. An estimate of repairs was $900.00 and I was told the worst case scenerio was that I could lose my power steering. I DECLINED. The long story short here is that this vehicle uses transmission fluid for the PS unit and that fluid is RED in color!! This was an obvious attempt to convince an "unknowing" customer into an unnecessary and very costly repair. BEWARE. KNOW your vehicle. GET ANOTHER opinion for anything other than a simple maintenance item or oil change at this shop. Not the way I expect a reputable shop to do business. UPDATE: Although I have contacted the Customer Service Division for Sun Devil Auto through the link on the company website, I have received nothing more than an automated reply that my message had been received. Still no reply as of May 29, 2012. Update: On May 30, 2012 I did receive a phone call from the General Manager and I discussed my story with him. He assured me the matter was investigated and the observations and recommendations made at the service center were accurate. He did mention that the service writer/manager who discussed my situation at the shop was no longer with the company- he was not the right fit- a curious development, I thought. About two weeks later I had the steering rack and tie rod ends looked at again by the service department at a GoodYear/Gemini Service Center. They, too, thought the rack was leaking because of the "greaseyness" but after further inspection, it was noted that the power steering reservoir was down less than an ounce (that's less than an ounce since the steering fluid was flushed and refilled in August 2010). No repair or further action was recommended. So, while a leak may be possible, it is VERY slight and it's also possible the the small amount below the "MAX" line in the reservoir may have been a slight under fill when the PS was serviced. . read more

Bell road and 67th ave. location. 1. Recommended repairs on several occasions that only after I pressed them for more detail did they admit that the repairs were not "needed" and stated "We were just noting that your car may need this work in the future". 2. Just recently had a car in for check engine light they called me and quoted $600+. I had the work done and the light came back on the same day. I took the car back and they called me and quoted $365, after explaining that "the previous repair was part of a larger issue for which the "code" didn't show up until after the repair". when I arrived to pick up the car the next day the bill was $850.00. I told them that this must be a mistake because that is not what the person who called me said. They said that I must have misunderstood, I argued with them for a minute and they told me that they would keep my car until this get resolved. I paid $850 and left. I know that their in-store calls are all recorded, so I call the Corp office in Tempe and asked to review the recording. The next day the store called me back (not Montgomery from corporate as they promised) and apologized for the "misunderstanding" and agreed to refund me $550!!!. Always get your information (quotes, and repair advice) from them over the phone (all calls are recorded) and hold them accountable when you have to. If you forget, just call them later and ask them for clarification then you are recorded! The worse part was how they made me feel during the initial disagreement. I have spent (literally) thousands of $$ over the past 5 years servicing 4 family cars from oil changes to major repairs, and for my loyal patronage, they treated me as though I was unimportant, at fault, and threatened to hold my car "hostage". They even made a smart a** passive aggressive remark at which time I stopped arguing and left. Be aware, ask a lot of questions and (again) keep important conversations with them over the phone. I am loyal (sometimes to a fault) but in my defense my opinion is you should try to have a steady mechanic so there is no "finger pointing" and (you would hope) to build trust and a good rapport. In retrospect I think they saw me as an easy target and took advantage more than a few times. As of today, they will not see me in any of their locations again. 3. General misc. issues - They charge a diagnostic fee that does not apply to your repair bill total if you get the work done. No other shop/dealer does this. They all will credit the diagnostic fee towards the final repair. My cars have always smelled like dirty oil when I pick them up and I have wipe down the seat and steering wheel. On one occasion I had to shampoo the carpet in the car because the dirty oil odor was so bad. There have been other issues, but I think my point is made here. Buyer Beware. read more

When my car failed to start because the battery was dead, I called Sun Devil Auto, located at 5104 E Ray Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85044 and asked them if they could help me. I spoke with an employee named "Dave". He told me he would send a tow truck to tow my car to the repair shop of Sun Devil Auto. I asked him how much that would cost me and he replied that he would not charge me for the tow. About 4 hours later, the tow truck driver arrived and used a battery charger to start my car. I then drove to Sun Devil Auto to get the battery replaced. After the battery was replaced, Dave presented me with a bill for $226.63, which I paid. On the following day, I called the Sun Devil Auto store located at 915 S Val Vista Dr, Gilbert, AZ 85296 and spoke with an employee named "Austin". He advised me that the cost, "out the door, including a five year warranty and tax" to replace my battery would be $170.88, a difference of $55.75 between two separate branch offices of the same business. Feeling exploited, I returned to Sun Devil Auto at 5104 E Ray Rd and spoke with Dave about the overcharge for my repair. He tried to tell me that the additional $55.75 he charged me was for a five year warranty on the battery. I told him I did not want the 5 year warranty on the battery and that I would prefer a refund instead of the warranty. He lost his temper and yelled that he would not give me a refund. I told him I would report the incident to Yelp, at which point he screamed, "Don't try to threaten me!". Took my car in for an oil change at 10 a.m. the same night 38 miles later my car shut down on the freeway with the check engine light and oil light on for the first time in my car. My husband had to push the car off the freeway. When we opened the hood there was smoke coming off the oil filter and out the dip stick for the oil which by the way has no oil on it. I'm not sure what sun devil forgot to do but there is no oil in the engine and the car won't start. They will be hearing from me at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning at which time I hope they make it right do to the integrity of the the company that is claimed to be for forty two years. read more

These people said that my car had a ruptured boot and it needed to be repaired immediately. And, I was told that the cost would be $350, which "is much less than dealers charge," they said. Instead I took it to my dealer who said the cost would be between $210 and $245. After taking it in for the repair, the dealer told me to come pick up the car, nothing needed to be done now. Yes, the boot is beginning to go, but on a scale of 1-10, it is a 1. They recommended not fixing it at this point. Neither my husband nor I will go back to the Ahwatukee shop. read more

Murphy's Law is alive and well. I went to grab to go food on a Friday night and came back to a dead car parked in the 10 min To Go parking. Great. Having no regular mechanic to call, I had my car towed to SDA and prayed to the car repair gods not to be taken to the cleaners. I called the next day (Saturday) and explained my situation to the tech. He said they would look into it that day (awesome!) and would call when they knew more. I received a call not long after I dropped my keys off. The culprit was the alternator and I would need a new alternator and battery to combat the problem. Chris gave me a fair price and was happy to answer all of my questions. He explained that I would be receiving a re-manufactured alternator which is waaaaay better than a remodeled one and waaaaay less expensive than brand new one. He also explained the warranty on the repair and the replacement parts. I received a call a few hours later that my repairs were almost finished and I could swing by and pick up my car. My car was finished by noon with same day service! I was very impressed that they were able to fit me in same day AND have my car ready in just a few hours. I was even happier when I saw my bill. Well, as happy as I could be when receiving a bill for car repairs. I was charged very reasonable rates for the replacement parts, not far off what I would have been charged if I purchased them at a parts store. Previously I was charged nearly $200 for just a battery, no labor, at a local dealership so it was nice to see a shop not gouge their captive customers. I will definitely come back for all car related problems I am having. read more

I spoke to the GM, David Godinez, and he invited me in to take a look at my car and determine what was truly necessary. So, I set up an appointment and dropped my car off. Less than 2 hours later, not only did I save more than $700, I was told that 90% of the 'required' service items were not necessary and my car was in great shape. In a world where we are bombarded by the sensationally bad stories about business, I think it's important to share the great ones. I was going to Cobblestone for my oil changes because they were the most affordable, but I dreaded going there. I found Sun Devil advertising the same price for an oil change so I decided to give them a try. I'm so happy that I did! For $20 they changed my oil, topped off my fluids, and rotated my tires. Dave took care of me and he's awesome! I've never had such good customer service at a car shop. He printed out things I need to get repaired, but didn't try to pressure me into buying anything extra like most places do. I definitely recommend this shop. Took my car there due to intermittent AC running cold than hot. I gave them a very transparent and explicit details about what I'd done and tried. Seemed as though they were gonna work with integrity. A few hours later I got a call that my AC was fine but I needed to change the thermostat and radiator cap because the car was over heating. One this was odd, as that work was done a year prior. So I told the guy that I had done this work, afterwards he backs up and says, " actually it's the Freon and radiator cap only. But there is other things that could be causing it". This was troubling, but I didn't have time to deal with it nor did I understand how to diagnose AC issues. They ended up adding Freon and changing the radiator cap. Changed me $189, highest price in town. I know because after I got off the phone with them I called a few places that charged $78-90 to do the same Freon charge. If I knew more about AC units I wouldn't have gone here. These is the reason I rarely trust mechanic. I wouldn't recommend anyone go here for anything more that airing up tires. Just make sure they don't charge you for that read more

Beware, I believed hat this was a genuine auto service/repair shop UNTIL and yes until the recommendations started that one of my shock absorbers is on the way out. Take heed, any repair shop telling you the shocks are leaking is a shop that probably shouldn't be trusted. Oh, and unknown oil leak source that can damage the AC compressor will be another scam some garages often use...just keep away from these garages once they start. On Saturday 7/15/17 I took my '97 Grand Cherokee 4X4 to Aamaco because of a transmission leak. After it had been on the rack for 10 minutes Don took me back and showed me a very wet, leaking, fitting and then showed me that the transmission pan was also leaking. Don was very obsequious and talked as if he was in a popularity contest telling me how he grew up on a farm in Ohio, and how he is just a good ole farm boy, and how great he is with his kids, yada yada, as if I gave a shit. It would have been different if I were the only person there but several people were waiting to get their cars looked at. After I had been there an hour he gave me a verbal estimate of $1200, and told me he would call me next week to set up an appointment. He never called, so a week later I went to Sun Devil on Ray Road near I-10 and Dave showed me the transmission pan leak, and the neutral start switch. When I took the flashlight, and went to show him the leaking fitting that Don had shown me... surprise surprise, no leak. The fitting was totally dry. Did Don spray some liquid on that fitting before he showed it to me? In 10 minutes Dave gave me a written estimate for $377.44 and the leak was fixed, and the neutral switch replaced in less than a day. They also pressure washed the undercarriage at no charge so I could tell if there were any new leaks. Dave was all business and didn't waste time trying to be my new best friend; good!
