So you know your girl had to check this place out. The 1st area when we entered was intimate, small and slow jams were playing. The waitress led us to the back area where there was a few more ppl and def gave a different vibe. Soca was blasting. It was a little too loud but we still sat there anyway by the window. We sat in the back room which was spacious, nicely decorated and had a dj. Our waitress Diamond was great, very friendly & attentive. I started with the spicy mango chow margarita, it was heavy, just tasted like a mango margarita, no spice, no chow flavor. I switched to the sorrel basil mojito which was better, not as sweet. I made reservations to celebrate my cousin's birthday . Sugar'd called the afternoon of to confirm. I love that and how polite they are on the phone and in person. We entered the beautiful establishment from the side and it's absolutely gorgeous! Alex was kind enough to seat us while we waited for the birthday girl. Kyron the waiter came to check on us for drink orders and appetizer request. He was so kind and professional. We ordered jerk wings, chicken strips, salmon with mash and broccoli, shrimps with mash and mango slaw and I had the buss up with extra mango chutney. Each menu item is up charged nearly $1 more than what's listed on the menu and gratuity is added no matter how small the party. I was there alone. The flavors from the chandon-bene and mango honestly reminded me of the dish -- however this is too sweet of a drink. While I was anticipating for this to be the trini version of a spicy marg -- I was hoping for it to have a little more spice. If you like sweet drinks then you might love this. To start with we got the jerk wings and the mango bacchanal shrimp. I wasn't expecting the shrimp to be fried but the mango sauce that it came with added a nice level of sweetness. The jerk wings were by far some of the best i've ever tasted. Packed with SO much flavor and paired super well with this honey mustard like dipping sauce. For my entree I went with the jambalaya shrimp and got a side of macaroni pie and rice and peas. Their rice and peas is like a pelau (which immediately brought back memories of sunday dinner at my grandmas house). My friends and I stumbled across Sugar'd on a Sunday afternoon for brunch. The ambiance of this restaurant (indoor + outdoor) is so aesthetically pleasing. We were seated almost immediately upon arrival. I opted for the drink of the day which was really good, but my friends who ordered drinks off the regular brunch menu weren't that amused. The manager was so pleasant and accommodating, it almost made up for the inconsistent service. Though our waiter was very nice and personable, the food took over 40 minutes to come out which is unacceptable for me. Nevertheless, we all enjoyed our food for the most part. Hard wings have been common in all the restaurants I've been to lately due to them probably being from old tough chickens because they are so big. As the neighborhood continues to gentrify we thought it important to patronize a black owned business in our community. The very community that my parents emigrated to, from the Caribbean to raise us in. We made reservations in advance only to come in and be treated like shyt. Red flag #1: Upon arrival Hostess was rude and nasty. Red flag #2: Despite paying a deposit, refusal to seat us until the entire party arrived. Red flag # 3: The loud azz music during prime dining time being played from a phone so pardon the phone ringing interruptions. Red flag #4: Waiter is literally YELLING across the table to take orders vs placing himself in closer proximity to take orders. Yes the music is loud however courtesy is moving closer to patrons to take orders not yelling across the table. If you are in the mood for regular degular run of the mill Negroidian nonsense then visit this place. 0/10 would not recommend for large parties. This is my second time patronizing this business. The food was good. I was not aware that you couldn't make a reservation the day of. Was advised that I could walk in. When I got there it was explained that the lower tables which are roomier were for reservations only. I mentioned that I did call but was told a reservation wasn't necessary. Was only told of the day of policy when I arrived. The lower tables are for reservations and the taller tables which smaller and can't fit much food are for walk ins. The hostess finally accommodated us after mentioning being uncomfortable and not being able to enjoy our food and drinks at the same time, moved us to another table where my husband and I were able to enjoy our food and drinks. Server was un attentive most of the time but came to give us the bill without asking if we needed another drink, dessert etc. Then had the audacity to automatically add his tip of 20% when I had to call him multiple times to place an order. He claimed that it was mandatory but, at the bar I was able to adjust. Highly recommend that you make a reservation. If you walk in perhaps stay at the bar. More room to enjoy your meal.
