This is my second time patronizing this business. The food was good. I was not aware that you couldn't make a reservation the day of. Was advised that I could walk in. When I got there it was explained that the lower tables which are roomier were for reservations only. I mentioned that I did call but was told a reservation wasn't necessary. Was only told of the day of policy when I arrived. The lower tables are for reservations and the taller tables which smaller and can't fit much food are for walk ins. The hostess finally accommodated us after mentioning being uncomfortable and not being able to enjoy our food and drinks at the same time, moved us to another table where my husband and I were able to enjoy our food and drinks. Server was un attentive most of the time but came to give us the bill without asking if we needed another drink, dessert etc. Then had the audacity to automatically add his tip of 20% when I had to call him multiple times to place an order. He claimed that it was mandatory but, at the bar I was able to adjust. Highly recommend that you make a reservation. If you walk in perhaps stay at the bar. More room to enjoy your meal. Oh thank goodness there's another newly opened , black owned restaurant in the neighborhood. We decided to visit sugar'd after a near death experience at Pich (the food was dreadful) We came without a reservation but the hostess graciously accommodated us and seated us quickly. Surprising how busy they were considering it was a Thursday (the new business rush) we ordered some drinks and wait .... And waited ... and waited... luckily the waiter was cool and entertaining and when the drinks came they were ON POINT ( shout out to Kree and the bartender) anyway the guys ordered wings but I was traumatized so I didn't even try a wing til we were about ready to leave. One thing I will say is the food is delicious. The calaloo soup and pie is just like my grammys and pairs well together (if you dont usually eat Trinidadian food) they devoured the wings so Im gonna say they were delicious lol . I really don't leave reviews for anything but this will be the exception, this was my family and I first time at this establishment and everything was ok up until I found a long hair in my garlic mash potatoes which caused me to lose my appetite and nearly throw up, there was no apologies and no management, in fact, its only after sitting there for 15 mins and then deciding lets go to the front that we were given the bill and told excuses, you would think that as a customer we would be treated better. We had No reservations, we walked in at 1 o'clock on Saturday. Which had a summertime brunch crews waiting at the bar. Feeling no pain! Several people thought it was the entrance and there were several people who just thought they'd walk over me and my chair until I had to give the bombastic side eye. We ordered the jerk wings for the appetizer. Chinese salmon with coconut rice and cabbage. My husband got the fried chicken with garlic mash and garlic broccoli. I also threw in a side of plantains last minute. We also ordered the sorrel and rum punch. About 20 minutes maybe more without drinks. Instead, the plantains came first. They took the plantains back and then brought the wings...then finally the drinks. They had one man working as a server. At this point it's packed with a giant party of children. It was chaotic. The food was good, similar to the sugar cane restaurant. Nothing special but nothing to complain about. Overall, the amount of waiting and trying to get our waiters attention was frustrating. I went to Sugar'd for the first time to celebrate a friend's birthday and I must say that the service was the worst I ever experienced at a restaurant for large groups. The party was a group of approximately 16 people. We started to arrive at 7:30. We were seated around 8pm. Here comes the issues....We've waited 1 hours for someone to take our drink order, another hour to receive our drinks, another hour to take our food order. At approximately 11pm the food slowly started to arrive. However, 2 guest didn't receive their food until most of the party finished eaten and 1 guest didn't receive his food at all. Then the waiter ask him "did he order?" I almost lost my mind. At approximately 12:15 am the waiter returned with his food in a DOGGY BAG to go!!! The man said, "I ordered my food YESTERDAY NOW I DONT WANT IT!" As a result, we all couldn't eat together during the celebration. During the event, guest wanted to reorder drinks, but the waiter never returned to check on us so ordering more dinks wasn't an option. I requested to order food to go but the waiter told me NO. The cake arrived around 12:30am with no plated, utensils or a knife to cut the cake but we improvised. The waiter returned with containers so eating the cake wasn't an option. We left the restaurant around 1am. Shame on the Management for not knowing how to properly service large guest or providing additional support for the waiter. I visited this restaurant with a large group of about 15 if I recall correctly and I must say the staff was completely friendly and professional. I'm sure we were overwhelming as a group but our table was ready on time. It was a busy Saturday night so we did experience some longer wait times on food and I noticed we were served water until requested and when the bottles of water arrived at the table we weren't given cups. The food was pretty good I would say 8 out of 10. I was so hungry I didn't snap a photo but the shrimp was heavily seasoned. Everything else as great especially the plantains. I would love to revisit this restaurant with a smaller party. I think the quality of service would definitely improve. However they were very accommodating to all of our requests. I'm not the type of person to write reviews but this experience merits one. We got to the restaurant at around 6:40pm on taco Tuesday and sat outside since it was a nice NY summer day. The server who took our order seemed to be rushing and took our menus away after we had said we might order some more tacos later. Ended up ordering 2 margaritas from the Happy Hour and 4 different types of tacos. Food was brought by another server at around 7:10pm with only ONE napkin and no drinks in sight not even courtesy water. Ate our food with no water and splitting the ONE napkin in half. The other customers around us were having a similar experience so they went to get the manager. Manager came out after 15-20 minutes, did not acknowledge any of us directly and just asked "who needs drinks?" (with the biggest attitude). We said we still didn't had our drink and he said "they're coming". Drink got to the table at 7:40pm. Almost an hour after ordering. That was the first time we had seen our server since he took our order. The other server just brought the food and left. Never saw him again. No server came outside to check on any of the tables for almost 40 minutes. Additionally, the customers that were at a nearby table informed us that they had to get paper towels from the restaurant greeting booth because they also did not had napkins. This new location is in the heart of the Caribbean community in East Flatbush. The spot is absolute beautiful and they did a great job in transforming it from the previous lounge that was there. Parking is TIGHT so I would advise to Uber or carpool. The aesthetic and ambiance is beautiful. This was their launch weekend and actually Day 2 so kudos to them. The Spicy Mango drink was everything, between the three of us, we had 8 drinks! It was tasty with a mango zing! If you are a sweet drinker this is the one. The snapper was perfect according to my husband and the oxtail was fine but a little more seasoning. The mango bacchanal shrimp was an excellent appetizer, I cleaned off my plate! They even surprised my daughter with a birthday sorbet and they did not even have a dessert menu yet. I see this spot as a great hangout location with friends and family.
