This was on my list of must-try restaurants while visiting Austin for work. Suerte takes online reservations; however, when I checked the morning of the day we wanted to eat there, the earliest available for five was over a week out. We decided to take a chance at walking in and arrived on a Monday night around 6:00 PM. An outdoor table was available and we were promptly seated. Our server, Lyle, came by shortly after to take drink orders and asked if it was our first time at the restaurant. He was super cool and helpful with our menu selections. I had the Nada Paloma cocktail and it was refreshing. We decided to do family style with the menu and since many of the dishes came with four pieces, Lyle was kind enough to add an additional piece (for a slight surcharge) for each order. Frijoles envenenados - bean dip with their homemade chips Ceviche suerte - light and full of flavor Molotes - bite-sized dumplings Quesadilla de res - came in one large piece that we cut up Suadero tacos - the best dish of the night! I visited Suerte for the first time a few years ago, and I specifically remember the Suadero Tacos being some of the best tacos I've ever had. I was really excited to come back and try them again, and I finally had the opportunity on a Thursday night for dinner. Our dinner was at 8 pm and the restaurant was packed, so definitely make a reservation! The space itself is gorgeous and you could either dress casually or a bit nicer and not feel out of place. They do have a small parking lot outside, but they also validate for the garage across the street. Our server was super friendly and made plenty of recommendations. We were checked on constantly throughout our meal, which I really appreciated. We ordered: - Guacamole (5/5): This is a solid guacamole option with plenty of herbs. Instead of the typical sized chips, they served this with a couple long chips that you can break into pieces. - Suadero Tacos (6/5): These are truly the star of the show. The brisket is perfectly tender and the oil is super flavorful. The "avocado crudo" on top adds just another layer of richness and brightness. I still think this is one of the best tacos I've ever had. - Tlayuda de Hongos (5/5): This is such a pretty dish! All the textures paired perfectly together, from the crunchy tostada, to the meaty mushrooms and creamy beans. The radishes and herbs on top added just the right amount of freshness as well. - Barbacoa: I don't like goat so I didn't try this one, but everyone else said it was good! - Flautas en Mole Negro (5/5): These flautas were filled with delicious duck and topped with an incredible mole sauce. First night in Austin. After a long travel day, we were famished. My husband found Suerte on Yelp. Wowsa! Kick-ass house margarita (Don Dario) paired with chips and guacamole. This is a busy, happening place in East Austin. Weekend dinner reservations have to be made well in advance, so we reserved our Saturday night a month ahead of time. Even with a reservation, we had to wait 10 or 15 minutes to get our table. But we were escorted to a great seating outside on the balcony overlooking the street. Perfect weather in late April, and service was excellent. I had the Don Dario cocktail - reposado tequila, tamarindo, lime, sarsaparilla bitters. Definitely different than your usual Mexican tequila drinks and a nicely balanced taste where none of the ingredients took center stage. For our party of 3, we ordered: Refried Lentils Y Crema Tuna Negra Tiradito Barbacoa Carnitas Basque Cheesecake The lentils were a new experience, and far beyond the refritos you find in a lot of places. The Tuna Negra was a standout - bigeye tuna, burnt habanero-apple broth,suerte pico, candied este chiles. Essentially Mexican haute cuisine sashimi. Smoked Goat Barbacoa was about as authentic as you can get in the US, wrapped up in tortillas with the provided salsas it was perfect. Likewise, the confit pork carnitas. A fantastic experience, which we finished with the burnt pecan Basque Cheesecake. It was a rather small bite, but the passionfruit-toffee and braised pineapple toppings made it very special. Too bad I was only visiting Austin, or I would be coming back here regularly. Obviously the word has gotten out and Chef Fermin Nunez has hit a home run with this restaurant. My visit to Suerte was phenomenal. Lucas & Ian made me & my guests feel welcome & truly cared for from start to finish. Guacamole was simple & clean, with a slight kick that was well balanced by the Rosa Peligrosa. Tuna was also delicious with a dark sauce that may have had a tinge of spice, but again, balanced put by chunks of avocado. Then came the most tender brisket tacos I've had in a while. 3 shots of the house tequila came out, which were smoother than one could ask for. Brisket tacos were so good I had to order them to go. Austin is home to many culinary influences but none more prevalent than the backbone of Mexican cuisine. Thus, the competition to standout can be a daunting task to say the least. I submit if one truly wants a great experience with flare but grounded in authentic flavors and techniques, look no further than a quaint little spot called Suerte. This unassuming restaurant is located in east Austin in a standalone building with parking! Meandering up to the entrance the customer is welcomed to a nice shaded patio with music and a moisture AC meaning outside in the summer is somewhat tolerable. Upon entering, the open kitchen is to the left while straight ahead is a well-stocked bar area. There's a lot of simple wood creating the ambiance, tables & chairs, shelf dividers with soft and off whites everywhere. Don't mistake the hominess with a simplistic experience as everything is crafted with care. Also, the wait staff is friendly and well versed in their spirits and menu, allowing the customer to know they're in great hands for suggestions and clarifications. I even quizzed my server on many items of which he nailed everything while being able to articulate why certain dishes appealed to him. Executive chef Fermin Nunez is no stranger to accolades having been nominated for the prestigious James Beard award twice and appearing on Netflix's The Taco Chronicles. This translates into a chef that cooks with refined quality and whimsy. The staff takes great care for those with allergies especially gluten even frying their GF menu in separate oil. I started out with a traditional guacamole. I liked the presentation, a huge corn chip which I broke apart to scoop up the green appetizer. I will say I was expecting more of a salad, chunky bits of avocado and tomato but this is a smoother rendition with strong accents of lime and no tomatoes. Upon scanning the wine menu, I settled on the J Bouchon Chilean wine. It was light with long lasting legs and a wonderful aroma of sour cherry and I think strawberries. For dinner I got the mole y pato which had a wonderful duck confit leg and thigh smothered in a rich and dense mole. Mole is a traditional central American sauce made with over 31 ingredients depending on region. Personally, I can't pick out but about 4 flavors as it's a very complex sauce. On the side was duck breast cut into thick slices with the perfect amount of fat on top to showcase the poultry along with some oven roasted petite potatoes. Overall, the dish is stellar with precision and a fusion of Mexican and French techniques. The other dish I sampled was the Tlayuda de Hongos. It was a really fun dish with pickled fennel offering a mellow lickerish flavor, watermelon radish which cut the dense white bean aligot and woody grilled mushrooms. Both of these dishes were satisfying and well balanced. While I normally skip on desserts and maintain my diet, I was tempted to order the chocotaco, missing the grocery store version I used to be able to purchase. That said, I opted for the basque cheesecake. It was very creamy creation with a bit of a crème brûlée vibe. It's interesting b/c the taste and texture really do straddle the line almost forcing the taste buds to fight over what it most resembles. Overall, Suerte is a grand fixture of the Austin culinary scene, an anchor of the upper echelon dining aficionados and casuals alike. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable, the food creative yet grounded but on point, the restaurant itself is easy to get to and parking isn't an issue. I simply love the food and will be back to sample more from their intriguing menu. Eric was great server who walked us through the menu, as well as their large selection of Mezcal and tequila, which are 50% off during happy hour! for dining, we started with a special menu item of bigeye tuna. The food is delicious but by far the reason we keep coming back is for chase. Chase so amazingly brought out some amazing celebratory drinks for my boyfriend being 1 year sober and he is just so kind. I had brunch at Suerte with my husband and a friends a few months ago and really enjoyed the experience. We shared the kolache (the one on the menu now is ham and cheese, but I think ours was brisket or barbacoa or a shredded meat), and it was delicious. I had the pozole (stewed pork, shredded cabbage, radish, hominy, and chile rojo bomb), and it was absolutely delicious. My husband got the suadero tacos (confit brisket, black magic oil, avocado crudo, cilantro, and onion), and my friend got the bistec y heuvos (oak-grilled bavette with chichilo mole, folded eggs, and tortillas) - both dishes were hits. We all got two cockails each (their Café Adelita with tequila reposado, cold brew, amaro, café de olla spices, and orange bitters was to die for so we couldn't have just one)! With house made corn tortillas, which were street taco size and warm and fluffy. Most everything is family style, the salsas are hot and flavorful. The quesadilla was not great, would not recommend that, it's not what you expect and dry. The food was okay, it was nothing to write home about. Portions small, which allows you to try more but not true to family style based on portions. It was enough food for 5 people. However, at the price point and hype I have heard, I was expecting more. I was dining for the first time and really enjoyed each item we got, from the guacamole to the brisket tacos and finally the spicy fish. The guacamole was simple and fresh with the biggest homemade "chips" I've ever seen. The brisket tacos had a delectable umami flavor that was super satisfying - I probably could've eaten all four tacos myself if I hadn't been sharing. Lastly, the fish was flakey and served in a spicy oil with thinly sliced olives and micro greens, which were great touches that really elevated the dish. The fish also came with complementary corn tortillas, which were soft and tender, making for excellent little tacos. We also each had beverages to start and coffee or tea after the meal. I am going with 4 instead of 5 stars only because I felt like all things considered, the meal was over priced in my opinion. This is one of the best meals I had in a long time. We went here Thursday night with friends visiting from Chicago, so we knew we needed to take them somewhere impressive. We got an early dinner which was great because it wasn't too crowded or too loud. Our server was friendly and helped us decide how many dishes to get to share. I really appreciated how they arranged the order of meals. We started light with the peaches and feta. This was surprisingly savory and so fresh. Second was the ceviche verde. This was flavorful and refreshing, though the shrimp was just a tad chewy. The other fish in the ceviche was perfect. We then got the suadero tacos which were incredible. The brisket was so smoky and flavorful and the tortillas had the perfect chew, clearly freshly made. I always order these when I come here and they never disappoint. Next up was the barbacoa. The goat came still wrapped in the banana leaf, served with salsas and fresh tortillas. We cleared the plate! Last but certainly not least were the flautas en mole negro. Oh. My. God. I haven't stopped thinking about the mole since we left. I absolutely love flautas and these were both crispy and juicy (not to mention huge)! I passed by this restaurant several years ago and it looked popular so it was on my list of places to try if I ever returned. The host offered to store our luggage in the back as we dined which was appreciated. I was able to make same day reservations for a Sunday night and the restaurant was pretty busy. We ordered the ceviche verde, suadero tacos, mole y pato, and chocotaco. I enjoyed all the dishes except the mole y pato as the flavor was too rich for me. And the results are kinda visible in the menu - some of the items are really really good, but feel quite a bit too expensive for what they are, whilst others seem a bit too twee and overwrought.
