Cute diner vibes on South Congress with an eclectic menu and a full bar -- what more could you ask for? They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, plus a small free parking lot for patrons. I've been here for both brunch and dinner a handful of times, and it has never missed. The menu is a Tex-Mex/American diner hybrid with plenty of options across breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Portions are generous, everything is well-seasoned, and the staff is consistently friendly and quick. On my most recent visit, we started with the green pea guacamole -- topped with queso fresco and mint and served with tostada chips. I completely forgot to snap a photo because I dove straight in! The chips were perfectly crunchy and salty, and the mint gave the guac a bright, fresh twist I absolutely loved. For my entrée, I went with the chicken tinga rice bowl (white rice, avocado, queso fresco, kale, sunflower sprouts, veggie black beans, grilled corn, and salsa molcajete) -- and it completely hit the spot. The chicken was juicy and full of flavor, and every component in the bowl worked together beautifully. Every single bite had a little bit of everything, and I left beyond satisfied. We were visiting the South Congress area of Austin and wanted a quick and good meal in a place where there was a wide selection. Joanne's Fine Food was exactly what we were looking for. The restaurant is a funky diner, boasting indoor and outdoor seating. Not wanting a huge meal I opted for a three egg omelette with chorizo covered in a salsa Verde. Came with a side of refried beans that were terrific. Rather than the typical brown beans, these refried beans were made with black beans and were tasty and smooth. It was absolutely delicious. If you know real chorizo, then you know it must be oily and this chorizo was just that. It blended beautifully with the egg and the salsa. My wife opted for a simple taco, she wanted a veggie, and she got what she ordered. It was simply delicious. All the flavors were spot on. I enjoyed a regional beer with my meal while my wife had a glass of vegetable juice. Everything was as ordered, and as expected, and delivered from a waiter who was kind, funny, and engaging. I can't think of any reason to rate Joanne's anything other than five star based on this visit. read more

Such a charming spot with a classic diner feel and a fun, modern twist. The agave bar is a standout--our margaritas were amazing and perfectly balanced. The food was just as impressive: the fajitas were flavorful and cooked perfectly, and the homemade tortillas were truly to die for. Great atmosphere, great drinks, and even better food. While visiting Austin with My family, we got really hungry and just went to the closest restaurant we found that was walking distance, which was Joann's fine foods. I honestly was not impressed at all. It's Tex Mex fyi. I ordered the chicken rings taco combo. The flavor was decent but definitely nowhere near being considered "Mexican". Their fresh juices are good, the place itself is very retro/diner vibes. Service was ok. Overall, ok experience. Probably won't return. read more

Poor service in a not very busy timeframe with a server who didn't reliably provide info on the food ingredients nor did he care to check back on us (nor bring any drink refills). Super cute restaurant with indoor and outdoor areas. The outdoor space is covered, which is a huge plus! Incredible food (highly recommend the hash brown nachos and guacamole!) for decent prices. Service is always friendly and quick. They take reservations, and are usually busy on the weekends so I would recommend booking ahead of time. Lots of vegetarian options including soyrizo, which can be added to the queso!! As a vegetarian, the menu was super exciting. Plenty of gluten free options as well. They have their own parking lot, but it only fits about 5 cars. There are paid lots really close by though! read more

Love Joann's! We ubered since parking is tough on South Congress. We started with chips, queso, guac, + salsa. Their queso is unique and comes with a soy chorizo which was great. We shared the steak and chicken fajitas which came with queso fundito. Fajitas was amazing just a little too greasy in my opinion but still 5 stars! Staff was super nice and attentive the whole time. Hello Patio Weather Season!? -ish..... Apparently my husband has been waiting all year for the polenta to come back onto the menu. Combine that with a random cool brisk day in ATX and patio here we come. We came for the polenta but got the benefits of trying out some Happy hour bites and bevies. Everything.was.on.point here. Waiter is amazingly on it but not overbearing (iykyk). The polenta was better then remembered and worth the wait. We ordered one but had to order another because the whole table couldn't get get enough of this goodness. The depth of flavor, the quality of ingredients just sells itself. This is a must try guys. Catch ot while it's still in season. Also another star of the show is their Tommy Marg. It's hit or miss what a $5 marg might get you but let me tell you - the freshness of this marg I cannot stop dreaming about. This is a place we could frequent for sure. read more

Fan-tas-tic. I see why this place is so popular! I got the Bodega Breakfast Sando and it was perfect. Each component complimented each other perfectly. Great taste and portion size. I did not feel heavy after (which is essential for post-meal shopping on SoCo!) My friend got the hashbrown nachos for the table. I didn't realize it till after, but it didn't come with chips! Clearly, they didn't need them and I didn't miss them. It was super tasty. All you needed was a spoon! The atmospherics are iconic. I love the old school diner feel. We stopped for the air conditioning but were rewarded with a very good meal. The food was well prepared and we had no regrets. The vibe is retro diner and it works. They also have seating outside but it was very hot. They have the water sprayers and fans but we needed AC. The staff is super friendly and provided great service. The food was amazing!! I ordered the motel plate and Joann's favorite taco. Everything things was seasoned well...I was curious about the blue pancakes. They were different but really good. Stopped in to Joann's for a couple margs and a light snack on Saturday afternoon. This place is (understandably) a super popular spot on South Congress. The margs and apps were good, I'll need to give the kitchen a full-try next time I'm in town. Service was Ok, but in fairness, they were slammed. Fine fun retro diner vibes with celebrity photos, unisex urinal loos, 60s silverware. I enjoyed my very tasty veggie migas. The fresh squeezed OJ is a shorty, maybe 8oz size. I might've been given someone else's abandoned tortilla (ripped and stained) which the server replaced very quickly, returning the pink tortilla container with an upside down lid. Good experience at this restaurant. We came to get some happy hour drinks. The menu wasn't really calling us. They did have special on happy hour appetizers too. The menu looks appealing for breakfast when it came to our tastebuds. It's located at a prime location on South congress. The restaurant is very cute inside and outside on the patio. The food was nothing too special. My friends ordered avocado toasts and both of them couldn't finish their meal even though the portion wasn't that big. I couldn't finish my chalupas either. We came at 11am on a Saturday with a reservation so no wait for us. It was easy to make a reservation as well. Overall I don't think I'll be back unless someone in the group insist on going here. read more

Super cute diner & bar! Loved the aesthetic of the place and even though it was busy they seated us immediately. We got margs & they were super yum! Hash brown app could have had way more hash brown. We got tacos and enchiladas. For it being South Congress, prices were not terrible but still a little pricey for what we got. Overall, the food was okay. I've had better tacos from food trucks. Service was ok. But the fact that they fit us in on a busy Saturday night made it worth it! read more

Went during happy hour on a Monday, which is all night happy hour starting at 3pm. There was a good amount of people in there so I'm happy we made a reservation for 2 people instead of just walking in. We got a couple rounds of their $5 Tommy margaritas which were good, and their chips and salsa and fries (which can be easily be made vegan/vegetarian by removing the cojita cheese) which were delicious! I want to come back and try more food. Service was attentive. read more

This was my first trip to Austin, and this is by far my favorite place we ate at on the trip. So much so, that we ate here 3 times in a span of 3 days. Joann's is right next to the Austin motel and is super cozy. Our servers were absolutely amazing and gave some great recommendations. The manager got to know us on our first day and made sure to come by to say hi on our second and third visits. The receptionists even gave us postcards with doodles and signatures of all the staff on our last visit. They made us feel so special. Each meal we had was amazing. You really can't go wrong with anything you pick. My favorites were the Green Chicken Enchiladas and and the Chilaquiles. You're missing out if you don't eat at least one meal here. read more

Joann’s Fine Foods is a lively Tex Mex Diner & Patio Restaurant located in the iconic Austin Motel, along South Congress Avenue. The vibe is laid back but bustling with comfortable indoor booths, shady patio seating and a popular palapa bar. The vintage diner has been restored and updated with mahogany wood paneling, Mid-century furniture and photos of famous Texans. The menu features Tex Mex and diner classics cooked over our mesquite burning grill. Joann’s is perfect any time of the day when strolling the iconic avenue. I wanted shredded beef tacos but couldn't get them without cilantro so I chose shredded beef enchiladas (with an $8!) side of chips and salsa. My wife ordered scrambled eggs, bacon and home fries. She requested soft eggs, as she always does because too many places overcook them. The chips and salsa arrived. I was immediately disappointed. The menu said "we make our own chips." They were thick and yellow and appeared to be run-of-the-mill, out-of-a-bag chips. I prefer the thin white ones. I took one bite of salsa, and that was one bite too many. Cumin. I pushed it all aside. Cumin doesn't belong in salsa. (Sorry. I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley.) My enchiladas came with black beans, and there was cumin in them. Cumin is overused and abused in most restaurants. I couldn't eat them. The rice was good but the chipotle sauce on the enchiladas was not. I scraped most of the sauce off and ate one enchilada, mainly because I just needed something in my stomach. We were still 45 miles from home. I pushed my plate away. I also ordered coffee. One sip of that was all I could stand. Too weak for me. It gets worse, much worse. My wife's eggs were barely cooked. She asked the waiter for some cooked eggs. He took her plate and returned about four minutes later. The eggs were still not cooked. She tried another bite but couldn't eat them. Her bacon was tough as a boot and not chewable. The home fries were average, but by the time her plate arrived at our table for the second time, they were cold. I pulled my card out waiting for our excellent server to return. He asked how everything was (he had to notice two plates still covered with food) and we politely told him. I ate one enchilada and some rice. My wife had two bites of egg and two bites of potato. He apologized and handed me the check. $65. Nothing comped and nothing adjusted. A manager should've been summoned. How does a place like this have any customers? It was our first and last visit.

4:30 is a great time to visit, if you want to avoid a wait!
