We had a group of 5 and we were all impressed with this restaurant! After a day of wine tasting, a nice cocktail and lovely dinner really hit the mark! I personally had a wonderful gin martini! Ordering martinis at a restaurant can be a gamble. Usually too much vermouth, in my option. But, my martini here was spot on! Everyone else at the table enjoyed their cocktails as well. The food was excellent! I had scallops, which were cooked perfectly! We really liked that the entrees included soup and salad. We also perused the small plate menu, but decided we were all hungry enough for the entrees. But the small plate menu looked enticing! I would say the only miss step was the black bean soup, it needed more flavor. But there was so much other food, I did not miss it! Service was very attentive. Wow- I was impressed! What I love about Subterra is how unassuming it is. The interior has an interesting feel- a large, strangely shaped space that is partially underground so it feels like a wine cellar. But they have done a good job of opening it up and making it feel bright and airy with the decorating. Shelves filled with wine line the walls and flimsy drapery separate the tables around the perimeter. It would be nice for them to get a few booths, but that is just my personal preference. When we arrived it took the waiter a few minutes to get to us to get us seated, but he was alone and already had a 4 top and 6 top so it was fine. Perhaps we should have made reservations so they knew to expect us? My pre-dinner cocktail was made with flat tonic, for which the waiter apaologized and gave it to me on the house. At least he warned me! I probably would have just thought it was watered down from the ice if he hadn't said anything. My sister ordered us some oysters to start out the meal. The marionberry mignonette was a very nice accompaniment, but the dice on the shallots was bit large for my taste. I like them to be extremely small- nearly a puree. Again, just my crazy personal taste and nothing to hold against the chef. Lovely oysters- very fresh. Each entree was served with a soup and salad course preceding it. Nice little package deal. I ordered the Cuban black bean soup which had a spicy kick to it. Pretty tasty, but nothing to write home about. The salad course was little over the top. The salad had endive, arugala, hazelnuts, beets, goat cheese, oranges, grapefruits, and dressing on it. It just seemed like too much going on. I do not lke endive in a salad anyway so I didn't eat that part. For my entree I got the scallops and they were fantastic. They were served over a brussel sprout slaw with some kind of bacon or something mixed in with it. Oh goodness! The scallops themselves were cooked the right amount, but it seemed like they may have cooked a little long on one side before getting turned because one side was much darker than the other. But they were tender and fresh so not to worry. I tried my sisters pork and it was delicious as well- falling apart with a really great mustard sauce. Almost reminiscent of my beloved carolina mustard based barbeque sauce- but much more refined. The guys both got the adult mac and cheese which I tried a sample of as well. Scrumptious! I am sure it is the most popular item on the menu. With dinner we had a bottle of the four graces pinot blanc which, as the server said it would, went perfectly with all of our dishes. Although the service was a little slow at the beginning of the meal, he was very attentive and knowledgable. AND since it was my birthday they gave me a free dessert! Who does that anymore? And let me say, the bananas foster was one of the best I have had- really really good! I can't wait to try this place for lunch sometime! And I will be back for dinner soon as well. what a little gem in Newberg! we stopped in for lunch on a Monday, as everything else in town was mostly closed and I was thoroughly impressed. it was late afternoon and the restaurant was empty, but like i said it was a Monday afternoon on a beautiful day so i wasn't entirely surprised back the lack of people inside. the place is really quite fancy, but the food really isn't that expensive so don't be turned off by the upscale atmosphere. I went with the steak caesar salad and it was so good. it was kind of a different take on a caesar salad with blue cheese and thinly sliced red peppers added to it, but i really enjoyed it. the steak was tender and cooked to a perfect medium rare, you could tell the meat was high quality. my friends went with the fish tacos and the edamame hummus salad. both said they enjoyed it. the wine selection is extensive and impressive, and when in newberg I definitely recommend going for a glass. I went with their rose that was perfect for the warm spring day that it was. i'd recommend this place to anyone visiting and I would love to come back for dinner next time i'm in the area. read more

So first of all the food is fantastic. We ended up eating 5 courses and each course was amazing. I had scallops and they were cooked to perfection with a delightful basil purée and some fresh creamed corn which was not your average creamed corn! Next was our cocktails. We had probably the eat martinis we've ever tasted. And finally, the service was really outstanding. Our server, Merle was quirky, gave great service, and had a great sense of humor. Service is always friendly and the decor is nice, but I think their location hurts them and so they are rarely very busy. So I just opened this account to write my review about SubTerra because I was so disapointed. I actually am not a picky eater and like most places I eat, when I don't like something I usually put it to the side and try something different the next time or simply don't return. I was so apolled by the service, mostly the reaction of the Chef. Our waitress was wonderful and we felt so bad for putting her in a bad place, it was not her fault. But the Chef never offered to come discuss this with us, but made her do all the back and forth until we requested to talk with him. It was busy in there, but again it is a Saturday night most restaurants prepare for that. We did make reservations for that evening, but were a few minutes early, we were happy to wait until our table was ready no big deal. The response that they offered to fix or remake our steaks is a lie, the only thing they offered was banana's foster. We did ask to take the steaks home, but he had already thrown them out. Never did he offer to fix them. The fact that you are so upset that we used a gift card and an expired meal voucher that you sent us for the poor service we got last memorial day weekend when we were there is a little silly. See the response from Stacy L. below referring to that weekend and here we just planned on not going back until we got the voucher and gift card, thought that would be a safe way to try it again, and to no surprise it was another disapointment. The dressing was excellent, with hazelnuts & a bit of orange & a slice of beet. My tablemate had the duck & proclaimed it just right. Not greasy, finished with cherries. When he wasn't delighted with the wine he chose the waitress brought 2 different vintages for him to try. We finished with some port. The service was excellent--attentive, helpful, knowledgeable. Wow this was perfectly lovely... Or loverly perfect! Soft, classy ambiance with white linens and very professional up-stat servers. My brother and I ate here for lunch a few weeks ago. The atmosphere and service were both delightful. We shared the Really Good Turkey Sandwich, and the Fish Tacos. The Really Good Turkey Sandwich more than lived up to its name! I've eaten a lot of Turkey Sandwiches in my time, and this one was among the best. The Fish Tacos were good too, although they weren't quite on par with the sandwich. We highly recommend this restaurant. This place is wonderful!!! I am so happy that the girl from the local winery suggested it. It was perfect for a quick bit, small plates to share, delicious butternut risotto, melted brie with fig jelly (OMG!) and sausage plate. The restaurant is downstairs (underground) quite romantic. The service was outstanding! I didn't get a drink because I was taking a break from the wines, but of course after this perfect meal headed back out to the wineries. After trying this place 3x I am unequivocally ready to do this review. Found them on a web page . The location is slightly difficult to find, but once there found the curving stone stains leading down into the restaurant to be a charming precursor to what was to come. Upon entering you get welcomed immediately. On the first visit we sat at the bar which reminded me of some of the Canadian/English type of large dark wood decor surrounding the counter. Ambiance was great ! Drinks were all made with fresh ingredients that are muddled by hand. Nice selection of quality Alcohol. They had small plates and Happy Hour so we tried 5 of their plates and we were too full for dinner ! Next visit was for one of their special Chef selections where limited guests are permitted and we have the Chef introduce the different courses and drinks that go with them, lovely, the main dining area has a full wall mural and built in wine rack into the wall ! Last visit was with family and friends, grandkids loved the selections and my son and his wife were as impressed as I had been on all of our visits there. SO.. the whole experience has been a 5 star event which is rare ! The price as you may expect is slightly higher but worth it.
