Interesting find. Interesting menu. The decor alone is worth seeing. Lots to choose from and if you like different German food this is a good place to go. Staff are very friendly. read more

Undeniably great. Appetizers were excellent. Best pretzel I've ever had. So delicious with a beer. Bratwurst sliders were great. My entree was the traditional Weiner Schnitzel which was just ok--a little disappointing. But as a whole, it's a place you want to experience and I will definitely go back. Without a doubt. Also good service and ambience. read more

First german food experience! place was packed, and requires valet parking. Overall food was delicious!

Super disappointed. Granted, I haven't been in about 8 months. We went for lunch on Christmas Eve. Arrived at 11:15am. Dinner menu only, which I completely understand. However, two of us ordered the baked scrod. It was not the beautiful piece of cod I've been served in the past, as this is what I mostly order. It was fully breaded, and I swear it was previously frozen. Also, I ordered speatzle for a side. The waiter had me scrape it off my plate when I informed him that it was completely raw. Three adults, also 1 and 2 year old. Our bill was $198, without tip. Three dinners, two drinks, one beer. Appetizers were 3 fried shrimp, and and one order of cheese. read more

We had a party of 10. Decent and VERY patient waitress who took care of us. Some of us were late for our 7pm reservation, but the rest of the folks were seated promptly. We were, by nature, a group of loud guys, so sitting us in the very back was a good thing! As far as I could tell, everyone enjoyed our apps, meals, and desserts. Apps ranged from the "Hunter's soup" - the tiny bits from the "Hunter's Kabob" to house salad. Meal-wise, the overwhelming table favorite was the "Oma's Beef Roulade", as well as the Sauerbraten (my choice) - served traditional style with the red cabbage and dumpling. One of the guys had the Hunter's kabob with various game meats (Elk, Bison, Bear, etc.), and his plate was clean, so it must have been good! I was so full, that I passed on dessert! So, two-thumbs up. I would go back again and try something different. read more

Another great meal at the Fort. We often forget about it as we get into other dining out ruts. We had veal paprika and stuffed veal steak, both were great! Only thing keeping off the fifth star was the waitress from 1950 that was slow. read more

I came here primarily because of Rudi's responses to customer's comments. I stopped by just for a couple of beers as I wanted Indian food to take back to the hotel and watch the masters. The bar was a blast. Friendly customers, friendly and helpful staff, and really good beer. Don't know about the food, but the folks at the bar proclaimed it good. Next time I'm in town I'll give the food a try. Rudi! Good job! read more

Went to the bar last night and it was very good. Staff is very friendly and knows the food and drink menus well. excellent selection of appetizers, the pretzels were very good with nice sauce options. The staff is also able to make accommodations, such as horseradish with the pretzels. Good beer selection, a dozen different things on tap, maybe more. Very good wine list with several options for red & white by the glass and more in bottles. I will return for dinner at some point read more

Went to the Student Prince with friends last night. Wonderful authentic German atmosphere, cozy, warm, inviting. The food was eh, ok, not great, not bad. Simply food comes out too fast, and there is no time to relax and visit with your guests before the next course arrives. Service was prompt, but the girls watering the tables should just look for low or empty water glasses instead of constantly interrupting asking if anyone needs more water. All in all, ok, not good, not bad read more

So, they have a lunch special in the deli section -- sandwich + dessert + coffee. When I went in and ordered it to go, the waitress told me, "That's to attract business people to eat here. It's not for -- you can't get it to go." That seemed odd, as nothing on the menu indicated that the deal was only for dining in. The sandwich itself -- chopped liver -- could have been fresher. read more

I have been going there for over 30 years. Very old crowed and some of the wait staff have been there for decades. Good service, good food and a real bargain during lunch time. Its a safe bet in Springfield and its the only restaurant in the area with an old world charm. Great for a business meeting. read more

I'm sorry to say that the service was was very bad. Our waitress was missing in action. It was not at all busy but she was no where to be found. She was forgetful and slow. It took forever to get a glass of wine after it was ordered. The food was good as usual but I have to rate this trip as a two star experience. read more

Sauerkraut too sweet and they have Auf Wiedersehen misspelled on their menu - other than that great!

Their Sunday Brunch is, without a doubt, the best offered in the area! Bottomless mimosas or bloody marys plus all of the wonderful food you could dream of. If you think the Student Prince serves up a good dinner/lunch - you're sure to be satisfied with brunch. read more

Great food. The shnitzel with egg (Holstein), sauerkraut, and spatzle were amazing. Ambience is old German, and probably hasn't changed for 50 yrs which is exactly what I was looking for. Decent beer list. Service could have checked on me a bit more, which I almost never say, but they were super quick in getting me my food which is the most important part. I will definitely be back here again. read more

Only had time for one beer but wow what a cool place. The bar area has an amazing collection of beer steins, mugs, figurines, clocks, etc. that has been collected over the years and will have your head constantly turning and pointing saying, "Oh wow, look at that." The wood paneled walls and vintage atmosphere make it a great room to sit back and enjoy your mug of Spaten in. While I did not order any food, one look at the menu assured me they have quite a decent, if a little pricey, selection of authentic German dishes. Most dinner entrees ranged towards $20. read more

Took my sister to The Students Prince for dinner on Sunday it was her first visit to the restaurant...it was simply amazing!!! She is a German food fan big time and she loved it. We both ordered the veal paprika entry and potato pancake appetizer, a cocktail each and we were full! The service was beyond great and the food was the best German fare I've had since my last trip to the Mother Land! Do yourself a huge favor and treat your family and or friends to the best food in Springfield, Massachusetts. Love it! read more

I came here last Saturday night with low expectations, figuring that there's not much competition in downtown Springfield nowadays that the Fort has to measure up to. I was pleasantly surprised, the food and service were excellent. It's benn renovated since my last visit and they did an excellent job. They kept the right amount of "old" while inserting the right amount of "new" I'm sure Rupert would approve. Have the bratwurst with cabbage and some Spaten beer. Valet parking a big plus. read more

have had this on list of places to try for a long time now so decided to take a ride and try it out.....interior is very old germanic looking, many rooms scattered around, lots of german memorabilia, plates, steins etc, two bars......waitress was very pleasant.....food was ok, it seemed over cooked and i suppose some of these types of meals are cooked a lot, but it was only ok....hunter soup was good but sort of tasted a little like bullion, wife liked the sauerbraten and esp the red cabbage, my hunted plate was decent......have been there read more

Do you get a goo meal? Yes. Is it as amazing as advertised? Heck no! The Student Prince is highly overrated. The atmosphere is amazing and the longevity helps. Bu the food and service are only ok. Worse, because it's always packed, they will rush you out if allowed. Thumbs up for old school flair. Get past that and there I better German food elsewhere. read more

Was only here for dessert, but I was impressed. Delicious food, impeccable service, extraordinary decor (the collection of steins), and historic location. Quite close to the bus terminal and the Amtrak station, so it's a great place if you've got a delayed bus connection or need to grab a meal when catching a late train out of town. Definitely will have to return the next time I'm in town. read more

I heard about this place as being a classic, so I had to check it out. The interior was really cool and old, so I knew I was going to like it from the time I stepped inside! Wood paneling, and steins all over the place, it feels very 1930's. Anyway the food! It was really good--the best german potato salad I have ever had. And they have this salad dressing with roquefort cheese that is rich and delicious. My pork was a little bland and needed salt, but I should have ordered a brat anyway! Definitely a go to again place! read more

Wish I could give it 3.5 stars (or even 4), but the most recent time I was there it left me a bit disappointed. I've been here twice before in the past few years, and it's always been decent. Mainly I wanted to check it out because of all the history behind it, and I'd have to say they must be doing something right (this most recent time could have been a fluke). I'm no expert on german food, but the bratwurst I had in more than one restaurant in Germany looked nothing like the one i got here...? Spaten on tap is always tasty though! read more

I can't comment on the food at this place, but have only been here for drinks once or twice when the ole Springfield crew gets together on holidays when everyone is home. Good selection of beers, and the bartenders are always fun to talk to and friendly. Will more than likely be back here on one of my trips home. read more

This restaurant is a Springfield landmark. It serves authentic German food and it is delicious. Parking can be tough but there is a lot at the end of the street which is reasonably priced and also the restaurant has valet. The fried camembert is a must!!! My husband loves the homemade sausage platter and I love any of the schnitzels. Thus Thursday I had the harz mountain schnitzel and it was so tasty. This place is great!! read more

The Student Prince has great options for both the lunch and dinner menu. The specials are always tempting. Huge fan of the Reuben during lunch. The manager Grace is always more than helpful with suggestions. read more

The bar at the student prince is my favorite bar in town, with it's kistchy-cool German beer hall decor and yummy hard-to-find beers. The restaurant food is tasty, but dated and a bit overpriced, but I like the atmosphere so much that I like to go anyways. During the Holidays the restaurant is elaborately decorated and there are carol singers several times a week- its worth making a reservation ahead to go for this! read more

I've been studying Reuben sandwiches at restaurants far and wide. This place has the best I've tasted! Add wonderful drafts and cole slaw along with its old world ambiance = a must repeat stop. And you'll be delighted with the professionalism and charm of its waitstaff! Enjoy! read more

Today I needed food for eleven people for a dinner and Christopher took the ordered and packaged the order with each persons name and helped carry everything to the car. Super friendly and helpful and the food was amazing! Highly recommend. The Brussels sprouts were a big hit. All the entrees were delicious. read more

I found this Gem while sitting in my hotel room and searching Yelp for good restaurants. After finding the name I asked the hotel bartender what she knew about this place and she gave it rave reviews. I was greeted right away when walking into the restaurant. My waitress was awesome. I asked her to recommend something. She said Schnitzel. I ordered the Jager Schnitzel with house made saurkraut and house made Spaetzel. YUM!!. Chased it down with a Hofbrau Lager. Everything was top notch. So glad I found this. Thanks YELP! read more

For how ghetto the whole area is, for a tourist finding this gem is amazing. Historic, memorable and affordable. After going to the basketball hall of fame, this was the perfect stop to end the day. read more

Perfect Trifecta! We came for Oktober Fest, which was amazing. We step inside to take a break, relax and eat. The place was mobbed and our expectation were not great. Lia made sure service was on point, 1/2 our group was in and out, she greeted everyone that stopped stopped to visit. She is our new-old friend. The Rouquefort dressing and cheese are always great and when is beer ever disappointing?. A great night had by us, looking forward to the next time. Vielen Dank für alles read more

As out-of-staters it has been years since we made a visit to this long time landmark. We have always enjoyed eating here and we were not disappointed during a recent visit. The food was excellent and the atmosphere homey amidst walls decorated with local history and European artifacts. Also the menu is extensive enough if German fare is not your thing there is plenty of other choices all at a reasonable price. It was so nice to spend some time in a place that was not of the trendy, cookie-cutter variety. We will definitely be back and will spread the word that "The Fort" is better than ever. read more

Excellent German food, but a tad less excellent than Munich House in Chicopee. Nonetheless, you won't go wrong at the Fort.

We don't get here often, but just had a very pleasant meal. The Schnitzel and Geschnetzeltes were excellent. The ambiance makes this place special. read more

Moving to Springfield and this is the first place I ventured. Really interesting interior, great selection of beer and a friendly, knowledgeable staff. The tossed salad with salmon and Roquefort dressing was lovely and the pork belly was satisfying but needed a little spice or sauce to make it really enticing. Thoroughly enjoyed The Student Prince! read more

I just love it here. With many restaurants becoming homogenous, the Student Prince is a unique New England experience. I have been going to the Student Prince for about 35 years. My father used to drag me here when I was a kid. He was stationed in Germany while he was in the Army. The Student Prince reminded him of the beer halls that he visited while he was there. We lived outside of Boston, but anytime we were close to Springfield we always made a trip to the Student Prince. This weekend I went with my sons and we had a great experience, definitely five stars. This was the best meal I have had at the Student Prince. The impact of the "new" owners is clear. The place was packed too - all but the last room was full. We had been hiking all day and we were all starving. We each got appetizers and meals, so there was a lot to sample. Everything was tasty and hearty. The pretzel was delicious, homemade and the perfect blend of crusty and soft. The sliders, an appetizer, were tasty and perfectly prepared. For my entrée I ordered a Paprika Schnitzel, which was spicy and perfectly prepared. The beer list was great too. This last trip wasn't just for nostalgia, the food, service, beer, were perfect. I am already looking forward to coming back. My only complaint is that it is a two hour drive from Boston. read more
