***Happy Hour Review****** After being unable to secure a spot at the bar at Commissary, I suggested we hop next door to Stoney's and check out that situation. Luckily, it was busy but there were still bar stools open. We grabbed two and began to look at the specials, which are until 7pm. They had great food specials-20 wings for $15, $4 grilled cheese, $10 personal pizza- but we had reservations at the aforementioned Commissary so we resisted the cheap prices. As for drinks, I know they had beer specials, including $5 fat tire, and also $4 rail drinks and$4 house wines. The pours on the wine were very generous. Our service at the bar was efficient and friendly. I enjoyed the food at Stoney's on L so I'm looking forward to checking out this spot for comparison in the future. read more

I stopped in after shopping at Whole Foods. There was no one behind the bar. So I went to the side service area. The bartender was there chatting with a friend. I asked if I could order a drink. He told me he was busy and to go to the bar. I went back up front, no one there. I went back, asked if there was a manager. He said he was the manager. I asked for his name and he declined to give his name. . He was too busy chatting with another employee (it turns out she works there too) to make a sale. The sandwich gods must have blessed my grilled ham and cheese sandwich...with a long, light brown piece of hair. How the hell can I give a place 4 stars that served me a hairy sandwich? Well, because until the moment of discovery (3/4 of the sandwich devoured) it was one of the best grilled ham and cheese sandwiches I have ever had. The bread was thick, lightly buttered and toasted to perfection with plenty of thick, gooey cheese. I could almost feel it sticking to the roof of my mouth. (Geez, I'm really selling this aren't I?) But really...I enjoyed it thoroughly until the hair discovery. In fact, I ever contemplated removing the hair and continuing to eat the sandwich. Stoney's is laid back, cozy and warm serving plenty of comfort foods with a great beer selection. Service was wonderful, albeit swift and brief. Three and a half stars. Semi-basic draft list, okay service. We beelined upstairs to be surrounded by tellies and chow down some grilled cheese. It makes for good enough drunk food that I'd come back for the sandwich alone. Thick, plush Texas Toast slices with an excellent ratio of melted cheese, not for the shy of grease. I may have to smuggle in a water canister filled with tomato soup, and salt and pepper for the decently crisped fries... but I'm looking forward to trying the super and ham varieties. read more

The bread is crunchy and buttery, the American cheese is deliciously smooth, the raw onion gives it a nice kick, and the tomato is fresh and tasty. A really amazing balance of flavors. It was 8 p.m. on a Friday night and we were looking for a place we could sit down, hear ourselves think, and grab a drink... in Logan Circle. This seemed so implausible that we almost gave up trying, until somebody reminded us of Stoney's. Yes, it's a dive, but it was the perfect dive: low key, quiet, and the upstairs bar was half-empty-- just what we were looking for. This has now become the ECU bar on Saturdays, which is a wonderful thing. No more going to smoky-air, Arlington-crowd, VT-laden Bailey's! I come here on Saturdays to watch my Pirates play and enjoy one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches in the area. The bread is thick and soft, and there is just the right amount of cheese. Actually I have been a fan of Stoney's since it was located at the original location on L St. near 13th St. NW. One Eye Burger used to be my favorite. But most recently, I enjoyed Texas Burger a lot, with sauteed onion, bacon and cheddar cheese. Stoney's is, to me, not as good as Ray's Hell Burger, but it is the best burger place closest to where I work. Looks like they have a lounge upstairs now. I had been meaning to go here for months due to all the hype I had heard about the burger. Finally made it here last night. One word for you: disappointed. The burger was ok. I asked for medium rare and it was almost well done. There is more pink to be seen at a Raiders game than in my burger last night. Ketchup also came on it. I personally don't mind ketchup, but my two companions hate the stuff and were relieved they didn't order the Stoney Burger for that reason alone. The toppings on the Stoney Burger also rather meager: just a tomato and pickles. If there was lettuce, it was minimal. Now I understand I got the cheapest burger, and had I gone slightly more upscale, I might have been more satisfied, but like I said, my meat was overcooked and its quality really didn't seem that fantastic. All that being said, the fries were done well: light and crispy. The beer selection was also good, although I'd advise passing on the Stoney's Amber (tasteless). Even though I wasn't blown away by the burger, I would like to go back because Stoney's does have good beers, the servers are friendly, and I am willing to give their burgers another try... read more

They have indoor seating (tables, booths, and counters) and outdoor seating (with umbrellas for shade). - Super Grilled Cheese ($9.99): their famous grilled cheese sandwich served with tomato, bacon, and onions. It was a really good combo, but the cheese was not melted at all. What a fail whale! :( - Tomato soup: chunkier than normal. We didn't finish this cause it was just meh. Happy hour is every weekday from 5pm-7pm. They have different deals every day, but there's always $3 drafts, 20 wing platters for $15, and grilled cheese for $5! Don't expect fast service here. Menus came out slow, waters came out slow, took our orders slow, food came out slow, refills were non-existent, and the bill even took forever. MY go-to neighborhood Logan Circle bar, this place has quickly become my Sunday afternoon spot. Not to mention they are a Denver Broncos bar which is an automatic boo-yah in my book! This bar is a great place to catch football games and grab a quick bite to eat. They offer daily food and drink specials and have a fairly decent amount of tables upstairs and down. My friends and I usually opt to split beer pitchers between ourselves. Food here is actually pretty good. They are known for their grilled cheese - make sure you eat this! The other big bonus to this bar is they do Trivia on Tuesday nights. Extremely fun yet still low key enough that you can enjoy yourself. Service is great, and if you are unhappy with something they are more than accommodating. Crowd also seems to be pretty decent for other football games - making it a great sports bar whether you live around the corner or are just stopping in. I have been a loyal customer at Stoney's for about 5-6 years and I used to refer this establishment to my friends on the regular until this past Friday. I walked in and was told they were closed while the restaurant was semi filled. She told me "you have to leave or I am calling the police." I responded nicely that it was cold I will walk out in a moment. She picked up the phone and started describing my outfit, and generalized calling me "Indian" based on my appearance when I am not. This was very disrespectful and I will never share anything good about this establishment again. There is a professional way to treat customers and humans. Eat here if you want to be criticized and insulted by THE OWNER. My fiancé and I are here for my 30th birthday. He ordered the steak medium rare. It came out brown all the way thru. I work in a restaurant and we weren't upset at all. We simply asked for another steak (a $34 steak) that was medium rare. Our server was amazing and the chef came out and was so kind. But the owner came out and pretty much called us stupid and said that the steak was med rare. I asked her to bring it back out so I could show her that it was brown all the way thru. She said she couldn't do that (for whatever reasons) and walked away. We left and were still charged. Needless to say I didn't eat my meal. We are from out of town and I was so excited to eat here! I strongly don't recommend coming here unless you like paying for food that isn't what you ordered and getting insulted by THE OWNER There was a couple of women sitting next to us that said they couldn't believe the way THE OWNER spoke to us! I booked our pre-wedding, out-of-towners welcome party upstairs, the night before our wedding. It was perfect and casual before the formalities of wedding wedding weekend. The management team was great to work with and offered suggestions on how to set things up and what to order. Our guests had a good time. We had a few friends come in early to decorate a bit which Stoney's was more than happy to accommodate. We went for cash bar rather than their all you can drink option, as we are not quite in our 20s anymore. We ordered a few trays of their famous grilled cheese for guests to nosh on, and some other guests ordered other food off the menu. In the end, about 60-70 guests cycled in and out through the night. I attended a friend's birthday brunch celebration at Stoney's Bar and Grill in mid-February and it was an overall good experience. The seating is quite limited and it was a bit uncomfortable sitting on those wooden stools around that cramped table (there were about 7 of us), but otherwise, it wasn't horrible. Service is decent, though they did mess up my order. The food wasn't extraordinarily amazing (most food at bars isn't), but I did find their omelet pizza to be quite a unique option on the menu. Located in Logan Circle, Stoney's is a great laid-back sort-of-divey sports bar. My friends and I went there for bar trivia and sat upstairs on the 2nd floor. While the categories and questions (and particularly the trivia 'dj') were great - the seating situation was not. We found ourselves crouched around and sitting on random end tables. We barely had enough room to put down our pizza when it arrived (which, btw, tasted AWESOME!). Furthermore, the trivia dj also doubled as a bartender which caused the game to become extreeeeemely long because he had to stop every other question in order to make drinks. On a good note, though, the last question of every round was a bonus question. The team who got it right got a free round of whatever they were drinking at the time. We ended up not winning any of those questions, but I like the idea that we can win multiple times throughout the game. The best category, by far, is current events! I was psyched to see that Stoney's had re-opened. I remember when they used to be on 13th and L. Good times! What's changed? Well, it is still a bit of a dive but since the place is new and only re-opened last month it is not too divey. Clean bathrooms, not like the old place. They still have the grilled cheese that I love, love, love. It is wonderfully full of grease and salt. Get it "super" with bacon and onion. All for seven bucks and you get fries (as if you need more cholesterol, but hey..live fast, die young..right?). Stoney's gets an extra star from me for having Eggenberg Pilsner on tap. On Saturday night at midnight when not many places are open, we were hungry for food and was suggested by another bar bouncer to come to this bar for food. Ambience: For a first timer, this place seem to be like a local dive bar where people can just socially drink and eat. For a Saturday night, there weren't that many people around, which made me second guess their food. The music is not too high so you aren't screaming at each other when chatting. We went to the upstairs bar area, where they also have a sofa/table area to sit and eat. There are a few TVs so you are able to still catch the live sports games. Service: nice bartender and had quick service for the beers/foods. Food: I tried the grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. The sandwich was very good and I loved it even more because of their buttery thick bread! The soup was also very good, which was more on the liquid soup type, instead of a thick creamy type. The burgers seems delicious as my friends ate them pretty quickly and raved about how great it was. Food was good. I tried the wedding soup ($3.50) and the texas (~$10) burger. Soup was well seasoned. Burger was excellent. It was huge. You can tell it's hand made patties grilled to order. The bbq sauce and the slaw was a tasty contrast. They even used the good pickles :). The kitchen staff that brought us our food was very nice and prompt when we requested additional condiments. We ended up waiting extra time for our burgers, but they apologized. The fries were fresh, crisp, and good. Service by our waitress was terrible. We had a large group. We waited for a long time for our water even after mentioning it the 1st time. Took forever to get our check and to get our payment. Ended tacking an automatic 18% gratuity which was an insult. Several people in our party were servers at other restaurants and were equality annoyed with the service and the automatic gratuity. read more

While this place may appear as your average local bar, the ambiance and the food do not disappoint. No frills here, they service a wide selection of bar food, great IPA beers, and mixed drinks. In light of recent reviews, I find it necessary to update my review on Stoney's. The food here is beyond amazing for a bar and they serve until 1 AM. In a town where it is almost impossible to find a kitchen open past 11 where you can continue to drink, there is one right in the middle of Logan Circle. How amazingly convenient! I was one of the first Yelpers to mention the grilled cheese sandwich at Stoney's and I'll reiterate it. THIS IS THE BEST GRILLED CHEESE IN WASHINGTON, DC. Although I love the buffalo chicken sandwich here as well, it's simply overmatched by the perfectly buttered bread, crisp raw onions, luscious chunks of tomato, crisp slices of bacon, and heart-attack inducing slathers of American cheese that comprise Stoney's ultimate offering. The beer selection here has been (rightfully) attacked, but after a couple of shocking months of horrible beer selection, Stoney's is back with some nice offerings. Recently, I downed a Southern Pier IPA (one of my favorite IPAs) and although it has already been replaced, the Big Daddy IPA is a decent replacement. Bell's Oberon and Stone's Amber Ale were among the current taps. For a place sporting less than 15 total taps, I'm impressed. Finally, what review of mine would be complete without a story of intense awkwardness? On one of my last visits (with Ben M. and Andrew W.), a really cute brunette kept staring at us (I figured one of us had a booger hanging out or something, but that wasn't the case). Ben and Andrew kept telling me she was really, REALLY looking me over, but she was with some guy so I hesitated. Towards the end of the night, after she had given the guy she was with a ton of negative signals, I asked her, "So it's not going well?" "That's my boyfriend!" Oops. Yet, then the girl starts massaging my shoulders and asking me why she thought it wasn't going well. (Hhmmm........) I hadn't time to speak before her HUGE boyfriend showed back up from his 20 second trip to the bathroom. I quickly analyzed the situation. "Have a good night", I said to her as I sped out the door... Stoney's would have dropped a star if I got my ass kicked for absolutely no reason, but since that didn't happen, a 5 star experience it remains. read more

Stoney's is a neighborhood bar that could be in any neighborhood, but luckily it's in mine, very close to my apartment. Many call it a sports bar, but I would stop short of that title as there aren't that many TVs, and many seats are not in view of one. It's a true neighborhood bar with burgers, beer, trivia, and specials in honor of many local events. People go crazy over their grilled cheese...I don't. I mean, it's good, but it's not crazy good. Same with the burgers and brunch (though a great option for a no-frills brunch without a 2.5 hour wait). However, they have a very good beer selection on tap, including their own Stoney's Amber. I've spent a lot of time wondering about the business model of these beers because they clearly don't brew it there, so it must be some generic distributor, or better, a known brewery with extra supply. But that's neither here nor there; Stoney's Amber is a Fat Tire-like beer for a lower price. The trivia here can't be beat. It's on Wednesdays at 8:00pm on the top floor. Get there around 7 or earlier if you want a spot. Several rounds, including a visual round with pictures, an audio round identifying songs, and a round that last week's 4th place team chose. It's a lot of fun, and the hosts are efficient and friendly. My main complaint is that specials only run until 7, and there are no specials during trivia. They're clearly not hurting for a crowd, but I would at least appreciate some sort of special either until 8:00 or for trivia players like all other places have. Anyway, like I said, this is a great spot if you are close by to grab a beer, some food, and some trivia if you're lucky! read more

The rumours about the grilled cheese are actually true. And if I have anything to say about it, they will be growing to mythically epic proportions, Paul Bunyan style. I came into Stoney's on a Monday afternoon, looking for comfort food that would help dull the ache of bad news. It was cool and breezy in there, with an overhead fan quietly whirring while the rain dripped outside. I ordered a 'Super' grilled cheese and a diet coke. After a short while the sandwich appeared - thick and buttery slices of bread oozing with American cheese, stuffed with crispy bacon, tomato, and the perfect amount of red onion. A side of fries and two crunchy pickle slices completed the plate. I drizzled Dijon mustard and ketchup on my fries then happily went to town. Then my first bite of grilled cheese, and for one incredible moment, UTTER DISTRACTION FREE BLISS. This might have to be my new 'bad day' place. I should note that the barkeeps managed to be simultaneously warm, friendly, and unintrusive as I sat at the counter for an hour, buried nose-deep in my book. read more
