Stoney's is a neighborhood bar that could be in any neighborhood, but luckily it's in mine, very close to my apartment. Many call it a sports bar, but I would stop short of that title as there aren't that many TVs, and many seats are not in view of one. It's a true neighborhood bar with burgers, beer, trivia, and specials in honor of many local events. People go crazy over their grilled cheese...I don't. I mean, it's good, but it's not crazy good. Same with the burgers and brunch (though a great option for a no-frills brunch without a 2.5 hour wait). However, they have a very good beer selection on tap, including their own Stoney's Amber. I've spent a lot of time wondering about the business model of these beers because they clearly don't brew it there, so it must be some generic distributor, or better, a known brewery with extra supply. But that's neither here nor there; Stoney's Amber is a Fat Tire-like beer for a lower price. The trivia here can't be beat. It's on Wednesdays at 8:00pm on the top floor. Get there around 7 or earlier if you want a spot. Several rounds, including a visual round with pictures, an audio round identifying songs, and a round that last week's 4th place team chose. It's a lot of fun, and the hosts are efficient and friendly. My main complaint is that specials only run until 7, and there are no specials during trivia. They're clearly not hurting for a crowd, but I would at least appreciate some sort of special either until 8:00 or for trivia players like all other places have. The rumours about the grilled cheese are actually true. And if I have anything to say about it, they will be growing to mythically epic proportions, Paul Bunyan style. I came into Stoney's on a Monday afternoon, looking for comfort food that would help dull the ache of bad news. It was cool and breezy in there, with an overhead fan quietly whirring while the rain dripped outside. I ordered a 'Super' grilled cheese and a diet coke. After a short while the sandwich appeared - thick and buttery slices of bread oozing with American cheese, stuffed with crispy bacon, tomato, and the perfect amount of red onion. A side of fries and two crunchy pickle slices completed the plate. I drizzled Dijon mustard and ketchup on my fries then happily went to town. Then my first bite of grilled cheese, and for one incredible moment, UTTER DISTRACTION FREE BLISS. This might have to be my new 'bad day' place. I should note that the barkeeps managed to be simultaneously warm, friendly, and unintrusive as I sat at the counter for an hour, buried nose-deep in my book. read more

This is really just for the 'grill' portion of the name, although I'm sure the bar is pretty kick-ass too. Stoney's is a charming neighborhood pub serving people of all types. The portions here are pretty damn big and they don't break the bank. Our waiter was very friendly too, which I didn't totally expect. I ordered the super grilled cheese sandwich. That 'super' is no joke. It's two big slices of bread all buttered up with a lot of cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and shoestring fries. It's really big, and it tasted SO good. The butter is what makes it, I think, but the thick-cut crispy bacon doesn't hurt either. I also got a taste of the chicken caesar (very big salad) and the mac 'n' cheese. The mac 'n' cheese was pretty good but not the best I've had. Still, it's a big serving and it's good. I'm impressed, and I'd love to come back. read more

I think life would be difficult for me without Stoney's. It's arguably the only place I can go to within walking distance if I just want to chill and relax at a dive bar on a Friday night when everyone else wants to rage elsewhere. When I'm not in the mood of putting on heels, walking around in the cold with bare legs, and clogging my pores with makeup, I come here. It's pretty comforting to know there's a place that'll always remain accepting however unpresentable I may appear on a particular night. What's not to love about a low-key, two-floor, very laid-back neighborhood bar that has a kitchen that stays open until the entire place closes? Late night food cravings? Check. Amazingly, after having frequented Stoney's quite a bit now, I still have not ordered food here. But I have heard about the rave reviews about their grilled cheese and I will heed them when the occasion calls for it. My school also hosted an event here upstairs. There's plenty of room to mingle; they also have TVs and bars on both floors. It's nice to have a place like this 3.5 blocks away from me in a not-so-rowdy area that straddles busy neighborhoods (Dupont, downtown, 14th Street Corridor/Logan). Most of the time this section of P Street is pretty quiet. Stoney's feels like the perfect backdoor bar to go have a drink and not give a damn about the world for a couple of hours. read more

So after we got our drinks on at Morrison-Clark's happy hour, LydiaH, VenuN, BenM and I were famished. At Venu's suggestion, we opted to head to Stoney's Bar and Grill located a few blocks away for the grilled cheese sandwich. Fortunately for us, the torrential downpour managed to pass and we were able to walk over. The establishment is a typical local bar decor. The nice friendly staff set us up with some refreshing beers and we ordered our grilled cheese sandwiches. I also opted for some buffalo wings. The grilled cheese sandwich came out in a nice big platter with fries. The bread was thick and evenly toasted. What made this sandwich atypical of other grilled cheese sandwiches were the strips of savory, crunchy bacon, juicy tomatoes and sharp red onions alongside the creamy american cheese. Definitely a good size meal to satiate our hunger. Also, the buffalo wings were nice and crispy with decent heat and good flavors. Overall, a very nice relaxed ambience with pretty good food. This place used to be a block from my apartment, yet I really didn't go very often. This place can range from a 2 star to a 4 star establishment. I've stopped in on a weekday looking for some food and drinks and had great service, food would arrive quick and hot and be happy. Other times, the food would come slowly and be totally cold and gross (nachos or chili fries - come on, really? this stuff takes a few minutes and shouldn't sit for 15 minutes) and also have it take 10 minutes to get a beer. The prices on beers here isn't that great and the selection is meh. From what I have heard, Stoney's completely redid the place about 2 or 3 years ago. Prior that, it was more of a dive and a far better local bar. Now its a bit trendy and not a favorite of mine. Id go if i was near by and needed a beer, but wouldn't ever go out of my way to come here. read more

I wanted to update my review because we went in to Stoney's the other night and their happy hour has changed drastically. They used to have a Stoney's Ale that was $10 for a pitcher and all grilled cheese was 1/2 price. No more. Now it's a very complicated hodge-podge of certain specials on certain days--IPA drafts on Mondays, only rail drinks and margaritas on Fridays. It's very confusing and not something that I can remember when I'm wandering around town and trying to figure out where I want to stop in for happy hour. Thursdays are basically like the old happy hour, so I'll try to remember to go then if I want to stop in, but the changes really make it more complicated and less likely that I will--particularly with options like Black Jack nearby who have great happy hours every day. We went in for happy hour, realized that nothing that we wanted was on special, and left. It was a sad day. read more

Even though every time I eat one of their grilled cheeses I feel like I might have an ulcer pop up in my belly the next day, I still have to say that they are amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing. Second best grilled cheese I've ever had, after Little Pete's in Philadelphia, but it'd be impossible to be better, so second best is VERY good. Stoney's is my Cheers. Well, except for the fact that although the bartenders recognize my face (and sometimes my name) the 'regulars' seem to switch up daily. But that's ok.....the bar is cozy (I never feel awkward about pulling up a stool by myself), the grilled cheese is legendary, and the upstairs is great for private party rentals and shuffleboard. My only gripe is that they don't really have any happy hour specials. For this reason, most of my 4-7pm cocktail outings tend to happen next door at Logan Tavern and then I swing by Stoney's to close out the night because Stoney's is like the boyfriend that I always want to go home to. read more

Stoney's is a pain in the ass. My crew rolled in at 1:00am. Were seated. Then promptly told that we had to leave and wouldnt be serviced because we had a random guy in the group who didnt have his license and was being a brat. Totally understandable to kick HIM out as he was being a dick, but the whole group? Come on. I tried talking to our server who instantly walked away after telling us we had to leave, and was informed by him that other servers said I was too drunk to be served anyway (some assumption made when we walked through the door) and that he didnt have to speak to me. Moi? Too drunk to be served? Interesting since I had only had two glasses of wine all evening. Very interesting. Try talking to him again and he became irate and pitched a diva-fit. So I asked for his manager who happened to be walking up. The manager? Great. Totally sensible, reasonable individual. Thats the only reason why I'm giving Stoney's two stars instead of one. I didnt attenpt to convince the manager that we should stay. I simply informed him that he had super judgemental and rude staff and that I was extremely dissapointed and would not be coming back. Basically my point is: f*** this place. I don't like to use extremely colorful language in my postings on Yelp, but this was a really unbelieveable situation, thus I'm going to underscore my dissatisfaction through the use of said colorful language. 1 more day of GWB...YAY! read more

At Stoney's, fries come with most sandwiches and burgers. But since I've been binging on not-so-good food lately (ahem, Jumbo Slice), I couldn't bear the thought of eating a crab cake sandwich with french fries. Or pairing any of Stoney's delicious comfort food with fries. It's too much, unless I've been drinking. Then it's a combo made in heaven. My friends and i have a horrible time here last night we enter the restaurant around 9:45 for a some drink and something to eat. Unfortunately the waiterss by the name of SHANIKA blatantly apathetic attitude sent us running out of there she was so rude and unpleasant maybe so thought because we were youngs she was getting no tips. She never look at ours eyes. At One moment my Girlfriend asked her if she was having a bad night no answer either . One round of drink no tips and we walk to DuPont circle. Sorry, Venu, I can't do it. I can only give Stoney's 3.5 stars. It's not to say that I don't like the joint; I do, I really do, but I don't like it quite *that* much. Yes, they do have a great beer selection, and it's great to have an unpretentious, neighborhood bar in such a gentrified area, but, overall, Stoney's just doesn't touch me quite hard enough. I've gotten burgers there that were good, but not memorable. The service is normally great, though, as is the beer. Yes, Kevin L. the grilled cheese is THAT good! Hands down, the best I've ever had. Grilled to perfection on thick sourdough with just the right amount of cheese, bacon, tomato and onions. It's well worth the calorie splurge! I'm training for a marathon right now, and my reward to myself the day after long runs is a Stoney's grilled cheese. I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about it during those many, many miles on the Capital Crescent Trail! Oh, and they offer a very nice Greek salad, too for the diet minded. read more

As I close in on 200 reviews, I think it only right that I am the 100th reviewer for Stoney's. I reserve the right to alter this review and I don't want to jinx it before I can confirm, but.... I think I might have found my bar. It's right near my house. It's got a good selection of beer, and decent looking people. The grilled cheese, which has been mentioned, really must be experienced. Whatever guy said that it was too greasy for bar food, must not understand the concept of bar food. The grease is proven to soak up the booze. At least that's what I tell myself on Saturday and Sunday mornings when eating my 5th MCGriddle sandwich. The cheese, bacon, onion and tomato on Texas Toast are pretty much to die for. Also, it looks like it was picked up from a neighborhood in Queens and dropped onto P St. Which is funny because its right next to Halo, but I think that's another reason this place is cool. Because it just coexists on that block. The upstairs seems a little more loungy, which is why I will stick to the downstairs. Now I just need to go have a few pints during the week and see if I can make friends with the bartender, then I will know my liver and I have found a home. read more

Kinda greasy, good food, revolving beer selection, and decent prices. Stoneys is a great neighborhood bar for those who don't want to spend $13 on a mojito next door at Halo. Their service isn't always consistently stellar, but often is. One time I forgot my sunglasses at my table and the enchanting waiter ran after me to return them. Great for an after work drink. As far as I know, they don't have happy hour specials, but their prices are cheap enough to make up for it. Kinda dead on weekends, so it's great if you're out with a whole group of friends and don't feel like going to an overcrowded bar. HORRIBLE SERVICE, SO-SO FOOD. Recently went to Stoney's with some coworkers. Got to Stoney's and had a large group, so we needed to move a few tables around. GOD HELP YOU if you move a table! We got yelled at by the bartender. He personally came over and chewed us out because silly us all wanted to sit together. I can appreciate wanting to keep tables together, but really there is a better way to accommodate. Like may I suggest, or I've take the liberty, etc. STAFF NEEDS BETTER TRAINING. So lunch itself was non-eventful. It a burger joint really. The burgers are not as good as a Five Guys, but they not as bad as hotel bar. The fries did stand out though. Pay the bill was interesting. The bill was presented, then the waitress disappeared. We waited and waited. Then finally I walked over to the bar where the waitress and friend(?) were eating their own lunch?! Really? Really?! You couldn't think this one out first and eat before work? The beauty of it she was eating a Sweetgreen salad from next door at the bar. So we can't move tables, but bring invoutside food is okay? I give up. I find it so sad that a person (me) that lives 1 block from Stoney's never goes there. Why? Every single time I call to order food there is an excuse or a problem. This review is specific to the upstairs for a wedding event that I attended (not my wedding). The bartender poured a proper Guinness. The review could end there and the place would be solid, but, in addition, I never felt like I was competing for attention and I was able to talk, without too much noise, with other guests, and they set out a huge selection of pub food (sliders, chicken strips, fries, onion rings, vegetable platter) that was satisfying. Even more additionally, there's a good amount of bar seating and they were able to play the World Series game on a number of well located TVs. Struggling to think of a negative for it as a venue, only issue is you might blow past the stairs going up, but you'll eventually find your way. read more

There was a great crowd of diverse people and large screen TVs to watch the game on. The servers were all very friendly and the food going out looked really good. I was on a quest to find a grilled cheese in DC that could rival the one my hometown deli makes. Since I only have a few weeks left in DC I decided I had better get myself into Stoney's since everyone touts their grilled cheese as the best in the city. I'm glad I had a friend with me because in our efforts to try to avoid the disaster that is the red line we got off at the convention center and walked to Stoney's from there. Not the nicest neighborhood I've ever been to, if I had been by myself I would've turned around and gone back to the metro. Anywho, despite dodging construction equipment and some interesting catcalls, we made it in one piece to Stoney's around 5:30. The place wasn't too busy, a few guys at the bar and a few solo diners working over their laptops at tables in the back. I thought the sandwich was pretty good but I couldn't quite figure out why I didn't like the cheese. After reading Jacyln S's review it makes more sense. I guess I missed the part on the menu where it said the sandwich was made with American cheese, which is just about my least favorite cheese out there. It gets this really weird texture when it's melted that reminds me of cheese whiz. After I let my sandwich sit for a little bit it wasn't as noticeable. I think if I had asked for cheddar or anything else instead i would have enjoyed my sandwich much more. As it is, I did like the addition of the bacon & tomatoes in the sandwich and our server was super friendly without being intrusive so I think that warrants four stars. I guess Stoney's is what you get for being too impatient to wait for a table at the Commisary or Logan Tavern for Sunday brunch. We had a small dog, so had to eat outside and we were hungry! My bf said to me, "It's a bar but it's not like it's going to be much different than the other two places." In hindsight, we should've just bought eggs at Whole Foods across the street and gone home for breakfast. We ordered the meditteranean omelet and breakfast club with a bloody mary and coffee. Everything was brought out at the same time by a food runner and we didn't see our waiter (code name: Jolm) again until we were half finished, and at that time he cleared the table next to us without acknowledging our presence. I'm not sure if the vodka was THAT cheap, the bartender was THAT bad or the drink just sat at the bar THAT long before it was brought out, but I couldn't drink the Bloody Mary so I sent it back. For the record, this is probably the 2nd time in my life I've sent back a drink; I'm not a diva. When I did, the waiter literally just gave me a dirty look. He didn't apologize or offer to bring me something else and he didn't take it off the check. JUST the dirty look? thanks. I'm not going to act like a food snob, because I'm from Missouri and I was raised by a dad who loves eating in truck stops and buffet restaurants. So thankfully, I was prepared for our meals. The fries and bacon had obviously been precooked and were waiting around the kitchen for someone to come break them out. The omelet was huge, but filled with canned tomatoes, canned spinach and feta cheese crumbles that surely come in a huge bucket with plenty of preservatives to keep them around for awhile. The toast was the highlight; really good bread! I ran into our waiter as I was going in to request the check (we didn't see him again after the dirty look) and I said, "I thought you might be busy inside" when he dropped it off. [This implies that we are ready to leave.] After a few minutes more of sitting in direct sunlight, I went in to pay at the bar and realized the place was empty aside from 3 bar patrons and our waiter was nowhere in sight. The place may be fun for a young, rowdy crowd to get drunk food or nurse a hangover but I prefer Manny & Olga's jumbo slice for that. read more

The fall had arrived, and I was deep in the midst of my anti-honeymoon with DC. Having moved here just a couple months before, I had become bitterly disenchanted with the city's image-obsessed, overpriced, crime-ridden bullshit. People had raved to me about the food scene in DC, but everything I had encountered at that point had served bland, overpriced food in an atmosphere that tried desperately to come off as a "high-end lounge." Of course, there are some truly excellent restaurants in Washington, but I had found most of them to be out of my price range. I'm usually a casual diner, and had found nothing to suit my taste and wallet. And so, wandering around Logan Circle one evening with my girlfriend, I was prepared for more disappointment. The sun was setting depressingly early. We were grumpy and hungry. It was starting to look like we would end up at another mediocre spot out of necessity. Then, from down the block, we spotted a beacon of hope: An illuminated sign featuring a contented cartoon gentleman with a beer in one hand and a pizza in the other. Bingo. This was the sort of thing that we had been looking for. Inside, we found exactly what had eluded us for so long in this city: Bar food. Not Church-Key-style expensive, ironic bar food like chicken nuggets fried in duck fat or homemade tater tots, but real bar food. Mac and cheese. Pizza. Burgers. Fish and chips. Hell, I think they even have meat loaf. We enjoyed our meal there that night and have been back several times. The BLT is one of the best I've ever had - loaded with a mound of bacon that is both thick and crispy at the same time. The fries are just okay, but they're perfectly adequate. The pizza is also good, as is the BBQ. And they have pitchers. At reasonable prices. Unheard of. All in all, Stoney's is a solid joint that does exactly what it tries to do. It's an unpretentious place to grab some beer and some down-home food. The owner checked up on everything one time I was there, and he was gracious in his offer to substitute sides, mention things that weren't on the menu, etc. I'll continue to go back as long as I'm in DC. read more

Beer selection is toward the lower end of the longer side, so you're bound to find something. Decent prices, too. Not sure I'd come back, though. Nothing really draws me back there. The wings alone took Stoney's from a 3-star to a 4-star eatery in my book... Meaty and large, perfectly cooked, enveloped in a rich, delicious, tangy, just-the-right-amount-of-hot buffalo sauce, and served steaming with a generous dish brimming with cool, thick bleu cheese dressing... mmmm. I washed that deliciousness down with a cold pint of Stoney's Amber and went home in a happy food coma. I seriously love Stoney's and love that it's in my 'hood. read more

St. Patrick's Day 2011: I Hate Loud Drunks edition. I wanted a beer, I needed a beer, but I was in no mood to battle green-clad, green-beered twenty-somethings at an "Irish pub." When my friend suggested Logan Circle, I figured Stoney's would be fun without being obnoxious or overwhelming. I was right. Decent, well-priced bar food (with options for Vegetarian Friend) with a sizable tap ($5.50 pints). Beer (the McStoney's) drinkable and refreshing. Dark, but not stout-y. Quite good in terms of randomly choosing house ales from a tap. Vegetarian Friend had an IPA and commented it was a bit hoppy (even for an IPA), but she did order two, so... Server was clad in blinky shamrocks, but was responsive and cordial even though he was juggling quite a few tables, indoors and outdoors. Bar was full, but not packed, and it seemed like a great place to linger for a drink or four after work. I am wholly satisfied with my St. Patrick's Day celebration. read more

This is a nearly-perfect neighborhood bar. They've got 12 beers on tap downstairs and another 5 upstairs, including some interesting domestic microbrews from breweries like Lagunitas and Stone. They make great burgers and good wings. They've got an internet jukebox and shuffleboard upstairs. The only downsides are that the menu has ups and downs (stick with the burger) and the downstairs televisions aren't in the best spots for sports-watching (do that upstairs). Still, it's the best place in Logan Circle for a burger, a beer and to bullshit with some randoms at the bar. I stop in here before I go out and/or for one last drink on my way home. As a neighborhood bar, Stoney's can't be beat. The friendly, capri-sporting staff serves reasonably-priced beer with a smile and just the right level of attentiveness (neither hovering, nor ignoring). Small enough to feel cozy, but large enough to accommodate a group of 5 or 6, Stoney's is a great alternative to the pricier Logan Tavern. So, if you're looking for a reliable, no-frills local bar with above-average onion rings and an eye-candilicious staff, this is the place for you. I've never had a beer at Stoney's (but had good irish coffee) .... kind of weird, since they have good beers and I quite like me some beers. I've only been there for brunch and ate the same thing both times because it was that wonderful - french toast like WHOA! This is a huge helping, with plenty for leftovers. Hubs got his own order last time, so our leftovers combined to a whole serving. The next morning, I showed that toast what was up - stuffed it with with a cream cheese / sugar / walnuts mix and fried it right up. yummmmm In my mind, few things beat watching football on Saturday afternoon while eating french toast. Nevertheless, next time (and there WILL be next times), I want to get the eye-opener pizza. Maybe I'll even get a beer. read more
