I went with the Bogan bun, which is essentially a smash burger, with their burger sauce, however on this one they also put on a bacon jam. The burger was perfect and ever bite had so much flavor. The buns they use are fluffy and delicious. They are perfect for holding together all the toppings and the juicy burger patties. I had the Cajun fries as my side and highly recommend them. They come with a vinegar aioli that went perfect with them. I usually go with ranch for my fries, but the vinegar aioli was such a unique sauce that I used more of that than I did their ranch. The ranch was good, but super dilly. Overall, a great experience. We will definitely be stopping back the next time we are in D.C. read more

We were greeted right away and seated. The server took our drink orders after he had explained all of their options. The lighting was low but not dark. The place has a laid back vibe to it. Lucky buns is one of my favorite burger spots in DC. It travels well, but obviously fresh is best. They have lots of options for burgers and chicken sandwiches. Their thick cut fries are so good and I love their malt vinegar mayo. They don't advertise it in house, but if you prefer one patty instead of their standard two, they let you order it. It's a nice option if you're less hungry. But definitely get two patties if you're splitting a burger. I love their no frill drinks. They have great orange crush. It's been a long time since I visited Lucky Buns so I was curious if they still lived up to their reputation. I visited around 1 PM on Sunday and it wasn't very busy. They have a nice, mid-size, partially covered patio outside, which was a very pleasant spot to dine. I tried the Dirty Bird ($15, crispy fried chicken, shark sriracha hot sauce, lucky sauce, shrettuce, white onion, gordy's pickles) and the El Jefe ($16, double creekstone beef patties, american cheese, hatch green chili relish, cotija crema, yellow mustard, shrettuce, red onion, pickles). We decided not to have any drinks just as a break from alcohol. Normally, we would order fries ($8), but they are thick cut, which we despise. The sandwiches were both pretty good but not amazing. They looked gorgeous, just like how good sandwiches should look. The meat was cooked excellently in both cases, with a really excellent fry on the chicken. The toppings and sauces were all fresh and tasty. But overall, they tasted good but not quite as good as they looked. I felt like the flavors weren't very balanced from bite to bite. They needed a bit more sauce, or a bit more seasoning, or maybe brine the chicken first. The El Jefe didn't remind me of Mexican flavors, despite the ingredients. They were both a bit messy, as expected, and the waiter did well to bring over a few extra napkins without prompting. I'm sorry to say that Lucky Buns also charges a 4.9% fee which is *not* a gratuity and is also *not* mentioned on their website. The prices on the URL menu are also ~$1 more than the online menu. This is the highest non-gratuity fee I've seen anywhere and also the first I've seen missing from a website. Very disappointing. Lucky Buns needs to update their website ASAP and ideally remove the fee entirely. For transparency, here is the fee text: "Friends, things have been tough for our restaurant families. High inflation, rising wages and supply chain issues have continued beyond the pandemic creating a difficult operating environment. We have reluctantly chosen to implement a separate 4.9% fee for 2023 with the hope that it can be eliminated in the future as conditions improve. We appreciate your support and understanding. After a bourbon tasting across the street at Jack Rose Dining Saloon, my friend and I walked into the original Lucky Buns inside what looks like a corner bar on a Thursday evening around 9 p.m. We got a table right away and within minutes, we were enjoying hot thick fries and burgers. He demanded that I erase the pictures. I did erase the pictures and did not make a purchase. His demeanor along with body language and emotional state gave me the impression that I was not welcome at Lucky Buns. My sons were embarrassed and very upset at the treatment we had received. They insisted that we find somewhere else to patronize it was clear that we weren't appreciated.
