We stopped into GCDC Grilled Cheese Bar during spring break while heading to a museum and meeting my wife for lunch (she works in DC), and this place absolutely delivered. Our son's favorite restaurant has always been Gourmelt, so when my wife and I first saw GCDC, we looked at each other and joked, "Did our son invent this place?" He ended up creating his own custom grilled cheese (of course), while my wife and daughter both went with the Carolina BBQ grilled cheese, and I got the cheesesteak grilled cheese. We also ordered the buffalo chicken mac & cheese and the chicken bacon Alfredo mac & cheese, plus a banana pudding to share. Everything was awesome. The sandwiches were packed with flavor, the mac & cheese dishes were rich and satisfying, and that banana pudding--coming from self-proclaimed banana pudding snobs--was almost as good as our own at home. What really made the experience stand out, though, was the service. The manager, Russell, was incredibly friendly and helpful. You can tell he takes real pride in the place--he mentioned he's been the GM for 3 years and that GCDC has been around for 12 years, and it shows in how well everything is run. I stopped in with my family after a hard day's work viewing cherry blossoms! Location is super convenient if you're at the mall or white house touring. We ordered at the counter and grabbed a couple tables at the back. There's not a ton of seating but they have additional outdoor tables! Our food came out fairly quick and HOT! No congealed cheese here. I split the green goddess and the ham and fig. The green goddess was solid but the fig really blew me away. I was so excited to see there was an entire restaurant devoted to different types of grilled cheese in the area. They of course also have tomato soup, because you can't have grilled cheese without tomato soup, that would be a travesty! It's counter service, order at the counter or with some screens at the front of the place and then they text you or call out the number to pick it up. It's a somewhat little space, so caution if you're there at a busy time. The food is amazing though and so worth it. I got the tomato soup (of course) and the Mediterranean grilled cheese substituting in the fake chicken, because well why not? It was amazing. The Truffle Bacon Burger was definitely the Winner here for me, I tried it, something caramelized onions, aioli and some bacon nonetheless a burger to top all those ingredients... you have yourself a flavor packed burger!!! The store doesn't have a lot of seating but people were quickly leaving so it wasn't difficult to find a place to sit. Southwest grilled cheese: I don't even like chorizo but this changed my opinion! I would def order again Truffle: soooo buttery, fresh mushrooms, and definitely cheesy. Tomato soup is my comfort food and it lived up to my expectation. Came here on a weekend and ordered lunch. Hubby and I ate in and ordered the Buffalo Blue style grilled cheese with buffalo chicken and the Mediterranean style mac n cheese bow. Total came out to approximately $30. What's hot - Menu variety. It's a pretty decent variety, including veggies. It doesn't appear they have vegan options, though, so be prepared for that. You order your base/style and then any additions you'd like, such as meats, mac n cheese version, etc.... - Ordering system. You have the option of ordering on their website or you can order in-restaurant using their kiosks. There are only two kiosks. The thing that sucks about using their kiosk is that it's easy for the line to grow, especially when customers are new and aren't familiar with the menu, because it takes time. Hubby and I were lucky in arriving before their lunch rush. You have the option to order takeaway or dine-in. - Quality. Pretty good! Everything is very cheesy and flavorful. As I was spooning out my mac n cheese, the cheese spread and was stringy. I could taste the tomatoes and onions in my mac n cheese, which gave it a nice light freshness. Hubby liked his Buffalo Blue, because he could taste a spicy kick, which is what he wanted. Good portions, too. Enough to make you full, but not stuffed. - Price. For the quality and portions you get, it's good value for money. My mac n cheese was $14.50, because mac n cheese costs an extra $3.50, and hubby's grilled cheese was $13, because the additional chicken cost $2. That you can pay less than $20 per person in DC is a highlight. - Service. They're good about calling out your order number, especially more than once. There was one order, who took several minutes to pick up. The staffer made sure to call out the number several times, walk around the restaurant, go outside, and even said loudly that grilled cheese does not taste good when it's cold, hahaha.... - Location. Conveniently located to the heart of DC proper. There's parking nearby, but it's all paid parking and expensive, so be mindful. What's not - Service. Pretty good, but be prepared to wait, especially when they're busy. Because there appears to be a high number of tourists, they will probably be the ones who are confused and don't pay attention, which means it could take longer for you to get what you need. - Ordering system. If you don't order online and order at the restaurant, using their kiosk, be prepared to wait. - Layout. There are a few tables outside, a handful of tables and booths inside, and a counter. They're not equipped to handle large groups, nor a large number of diners, who want to stay and take their time. This place appears to rely on a large turnover, so be prepared for a rush. Stopped by here after touring the White House. The weather was great and we sat on the street people watching and just enjoying the city. With that said, if you are nearby and need to eat. It's ok. But, I would not go out of my way for it. They looked amazing. The staff was friendly. But the flavor was not much more than average. I saw them and expected them to be tasty. But they weren't. I have no idea who is giving the one stars, but I can tell you, this place does not deserve a one star. My wife and I came to DC on a quick weekend trip. We happen to cross this place and decided to take a chance. Under normal circumstances I don't eat mac & cheese, but this stuff right here? Phenomenal. I had the Green Goddess mac & cheese and it was other worldly. Definitely try the chicken Parmesan grilled cheese, as well as the banana pudding and the root beer. You can't go wrong. The place is traditional, DC. Crowded but full of life. Yes, you have to bus your own table but who cares. The food is awesome. I'm encourage you to give this place a try. I ordered the steak grilled cheese with the additional patty melt option on it. My GF did a BYO option. We both liked our sandwiches, and their lemonade was tasty. The music in the place was loud, indoor seating was limited as the back section was blocked off and only a few tables available. They did have outdoor seating, but it was on the chilly side outside at the time we were there. Definitely delivers on the grilled cheese and great cocktails. The grilled cheese sandwiches are filling, but not overstuffed (I can easily see why there's a 3 topping limit with build your own!). Amid the pandemic, dine in orders must be placed using a QR code and it's a bummer there's no option to make an easy substitution of swapping out bread or a topping to one of the classic sandwiches - you have to build your own! I had to build my own sandwich just to swap out the marble rye for sourdough on the Veggie Melt. The mobile website could use a little make-over! The Veggie Melt was quite tasty with the crunchy red onions, tomatoes, spinach, subtle note of truffle oil, cheddar cheese, and pepper jack cheese which I added but didn't have the spicy kick that I was hoping for. Super chill vibe, the inside space is small. The upstairs area was closed so I'm not sure what it was like up there. Has a little patio area which was nice for extra seating since there wasn't much inside. The menu is pretty extensive considering you can make your own sammies. I got the sweet heat which was good just pretty greasy. I also got a pickle which is actually a whole gigantic pickle not just a spear which was awesome. when ordering you can order at kiosk and pickup or at the table and someone will bring it to you which is what I did and it was quick service! Randomly spotted this place on google map while driving around DC. Came in right at lunch time (12pm) and a bunch of office workers were picking up their orders. Although it was busy we got our orders in about 15mins. There is a touchscreen tablet at the entrance to order but if you are eating here, you can scan one of the QR codes either on the tables or bar to order from your phone. Seating: There are three booth tables towards the back, a couple standing tables at the entrance and a couple outside. Carolina BBQ: it is on the sweeter side due to the bbq sauce but super cheesy and crunchy. Jalapeños are not spicy at all. Cheesesteak: very cheesy and the pickle adds to it really well. Not too meaty though. But the steaks were so soft. You can switch out the type of bread without an additional cost so I did sourdough.
