Two thumbs up. This is hands down one of the best Italian restaurants I've been to. The prices are bit more than the restaurants with pizza ovens but you'll get quality you can taste here. Now I had the special Italian meatloaf, which may or may not be on menu but let me tell you it was OMG good. My wife had a rigatoni dish that she enjoyed. The wait staff was top notch, bar tender spot on and the piano guy was a nice touch. This is a great date night or entertaining friends spot. This is a solid option for a special evening. read more

Review of Stoney Point's Bar Well, OF COURSE this is blue hair! Wake up children! You are in West Pasadena- mere yards away from the Annadale Country Club. I am told that back in the day, this is where some of the more rowdy members used to end up after a day on the links after they were asked to leave the club house. The bar at Stoney Point is a great kept secret of West Pas and East Eagle Rock! If you want a bar without the self-aware hipster/industry crowd that now pollute most local bars and dives, this is a little slice of Heaven for you. The keep behind the bar has been mixing traditional drinks since you were in short pants. The bar is on the small side, which I like. There are obvious regulars meeting up before dinner who have always been warm and genial. Prices are 7 years behind the times (aka reasonable) Some evenings there is a throwback live piano player churning out standards. Yes, he is hard of hearing- Solution write your request down on a cocktail napkin. He obliges kindly by playing requests. Food used to be very good, although on the expensive side for what you get. Here's the deal: I'm willing to pay more for a good meal and at times even for average service. But the last few times we've frequented this restaurant, the food has been unimpressive (read: bad) the waiter has had an attitude of "if you don't order appetizers, a main course, and dessert (and drinks), you're negatively impacting my tips." He's even made innuendos to that degree. That's not only rude, but unacceptable. The last thing you want is to order what YOU want, only to have the waiter (there's only one there - it's a small place) "dish out" attitude. That's a dish I won't order. I wonder if the owner knows this? I'll no longer patronize Stoney Point for this reason. Too bad, as I used to like it (when we weren't treated like that). Order at your own risk. Well, this is going to be a multi faceted review so buckle up. 1. I went with a group of people and we all split appetizers and a few mains. The appetizers and everything but one dish were delicious. 2. The one dish that was not good was the Linguine Vongole (linguini with clams). I remarked that it tasted kind of weird, but my friend said it was probably the sauce. 3. That night we all got violently ill from the clams. 4. I called the next day to complain and was put on hold for over ten minutes. 5. I emailed them telling them how we got sick, and they advised that if I had 'brought the issue up with one of the servers at the time, they would have replaced our meal' but there was 'nothing they could do about it'. How about an apology? Or a gift certificate? How about a free dessert or something? Seriously?? Nothing???? So, yeah... we won't be going back. read more

AWESOME! My boyfriend brought me here for my birthday and it was FANTASTIC! We had an 8pm reservation, and parking was a a breeze. No valet, they have a lot, but all spots were taken, we had no problem with street parking. Don't let the outside of the place fool ya, we had gotten all dressed up and were like,we probably are over dressed for this place, but we weren't! We were seated in front of the piano player,& brought drinks within the first 2 minutes of being seated. Also, given a plate of the best bruschetta that I have had, aside from making my own. I am a NY Italian, living in LA for 13 years, and have had yet to find a place that was as old school and comfortable with fantastic, & reasonably priced food until this one. The waiters were lovely, fast and not at all annoying. Not once did they interrupt our conversation. The energy from the moment that we walked in was happy, comfortable, slightly romantic, and homey. We weren't rushed, even though, it was a Saturday night and every table in the place was full. My boyfriend started with Beef Carpaccio and said it was great. I had gotten the Penne alla Vodka, and added chicken, and my boyfriend got the Roast Duck with orange sauce. Both were outstanding. Portions were large enough for each of us to bring the rest home. My boyfriend had told them when he made the reservation, that it was my birthday, and at the end of the meal, our waiter brought a slice of tiramisu with a lit candle in it. The piano player started playing Happy Birthday, and patrons from 1/2 the restaurant joined in singing too! We were the youngest couple in the place, and as we walked to leave several people wished me a happy birthday. It was sweet. I am giving Stoney Point 5 stars because, of the entire dining experience. I love the vibe of this place. It's a restaurant with a piano and a bar. Very old-timey Pasadena, a lot of well-to-do older folks having dinner. The service is excellent and old-school: the waiters wear tux-like uniforms and put your napkin on your lap for you. Despite the fancy waiters, the restaurant is mostly dressy casual, with men wearing collared shirts and chinos. The first time we went there was a very enjoyable pianist, an older man, playing standards. The second time there was a woman playing so quietly I couldn't hear anything and then I guess she took a break - I plan on calling ahead next time to try to go when there will be music because it was really wonderful. Going to write a vegan and vegetarian perspective review but I'll say here that they bring you free bruschetta and a roll and butter. Also, the diet coke was crisp and we had many refills. Stoney Point is very good for vegetarians: there are some wonderful salads and pasta options. You probably wouldn't come here all the time as a vegetarian but for once in a while, why not. Vegan - not as many options but doable. There are no clear vegan options on the menu and when I asked the waiter what they have, he was not familiar with the word "vegan" (he might have been Italian) so I explained. He was very accommodating and nice. He said they could make a pasta primavera with tomato sauce even though it wasn't on the menu. I ordered it with penne and my husband (vegetarian) ordered it with linguine. When the dishes came out there was cheese melted all over it. I sent mine back and they made a new one fairly quickly. It seemed the whole sauce was now another color, my husband's was pink compared to the red sauce on my replacement so I wonder if they didn't understand the first time and made it with cream sauce. The dish was delicious, the pasta done perfectly, but if you have an actual dairy allergy I would be very careful. The only possibly vegan salad is the house salad. I didn't ask about the dressing - I'm hoping and assuming it's vegan but a more diligent person must ask - and if it's not I'm sure they would bring oil and vinegar. I was feeling shy and did not ask about the bruschetta or the roll, however, I'm fairly positive that the roll itself is vegan. Most plain french and Italian rolls are vegan. Next time I'm there I'll see if the can do a pasta puttanesca or just olive oil with salt and pepper. read more

Such a secret, fantastic restaurant. The food is fantastic and it really is a time warp. Ask to be seated by the bar, by the piano.. and at 7 p.m. you will be treated to live piano... my favorite is the piano player who is 95 years old and can't hear a damn thing. So if you want to request something, you need to GO UP to him and YELL your request. Often, the regulars will sit near him and yell for you if you want. It's the type of place, that if people know you can sing.. you will be heckled into it.. (the regulars sing...) It really is a fun place, comfortable place. The food and service is excellent... so all around, it's a good time. And actually, it's not a bad place for kids.. I've seen entire families in there and everyone is really welcoming to the kids... letting them sing along with the piano, etc... If you can still fit some dessert in your belly after your dinner... I'd HIGHLY recommend the souffle for two... you really do get two souffles.. and they have chocolate, grand marnier and something else. The chocolate is the best... hands down. Stoney Point's service is excellent, it is deservedly beloved by the local San Rafealites (San Rafealinos?) and the food is solidly good if not great. The piano bar makes dining there a joyfully memorable experience. My husband and I are probably some of Stoney Point's younger patrons, but that has never bothered us. We're young by neighborhood standards anyway, if we absolutely must hang out with people our own age it's not like Eagle Rock and the insipid Colorado Boulevard aren't two minutes away. For a good, old school Italian meal (the food reminded me a lot of Dan Tana's in West Hollywood, actually, nothing particularly inventive but everything quite tasty) in a sleepy neighborhood with the occasional patron belting out showtunes, Stoney Point cannot be beat. read more

I go on occasion, on Saturday nights... CURRENTLY ON SATURDAY NIGHTS: Solo piano starts at 7:30PM, but then, on Saturday nights, at 9:30PM singers are invited up to sing, without a microphone (with their own sheet music in the right key for them) as the pianist plays. Goes till about 11:30PM (some times a little later). *Ron Snyder is the resident Saturday night pianist at this time... he sight reads, improvises and follows very well... If he's unable to be there, they usually get a sub, but they subs are not always great accompanists. Different singers show up, on different nights, with some showing up weekly, and others occasionally. I won't tell you it's all unicorns & rainbows, but if someone wants to sing a song, they're able... There are very few places like this any more... not karaoke... it's piano bar. Some are polished, perfected, performances, and some are works in progress... Again, only after 9:30PM (sometimes starts later) on Saturdays. If you're in the mood for that, sit on the side closer to the piano, in the bar area, and go later, if you're not, sit in the dinning room further away, and clear out earlier. Most non-amplified voices won't reach past the separation between the bar area and the dinning room... some will. The only tables in the bar area I actively avoid are the tables right next to the piano. Though some love those as they get to see expression more clearly, and hear everyone, and everything. The times I've gotten more than drinks, I've been very happy with the food. And yes, the owner, waiters and bartender all career professionals... attentive and friendly. I've seen people propose there, celebrate there, chill listening, sing for the first time in a long while... As far as the patrons, some will wear T-shirts and jeans, but many typically dress on the nicer side, which is another nice thing to experience in Los Angeles. read more

I didn't think the entrees were pricey. It's what you would pay at most restaurants, but the appetizers were beyond pricey. I had the crab cakes, lobster ravioli and the risotto con porcini gamberi. The risotto was too salty for me. I tend to lean on salty food but have been noticing one of my favorite Italian entrees (in most establishments) have become salter than my taste buds like. Which is strange. I have had good risotto before so I'm still gonna try it every time it's offered on the menu at restaurants I go to. Any how, then I ordered the lobster ravioli and that was good but didn't stand out as very flavorful or full or chunks of lobster or hand any distinctive flavor that stood out from other establishments. We had a wonderful time. I have driven by the place for years, but for some reason never checked it out. So last Saturday I looked into their Yelp rating and description and decided to give them a try. Old school all the way, sort of like a classic red-booth steakhouse but oriented towards Italian style food. It is decidedly not a hipster small plate foodie place. GREAT service, pleasant atmosphere, live piano playing jazz standards, excellent drinks (we enjoyed martinis). If you know Columbo's down Colorado a couple of miles Stony Point is similar but a solid step or two upscale. I only had one disappointment, we ordered a couple of desserts and it was clear they farm that part of their kitchen out to a vendor that is not up to the rest of their standards. The tiramisu was good, but the key lime pie my wife ordered was really awful-- not fresh, lousy consistency and flavor. If they would switch to a limited menu of house made desserts a 5 star rating would be easy. Overall great experience. We will be back! read more

Stoney Point is a perfect place to dine if you're looking for both a cozy place along with a nice full course meal. They always have some type of live music playing including piano, jazz, etc. they serve complimentary Warm fresh bread with butter. But don't get full of of that because their entree dishes are amazing. Their French onion soup is definitely a must-try. It is served in a clay pot with melted cheese hovering the pot. They also allow you to change around the sauces for the pastas say you prefer Alfredo rather than tomato sauce. The only dishes I wasn't very fond of were their dessert. The chocolate mousse looked mouth watering in the menu, but didn't have the consistency of the mousse I was imagining. I would stick to their lady finger tiramisu, which was the perfect amount of coffee flavor, and perfect amount of sweetness. read more

Yeah, I like this place. It's quiet. It's interesting. It's just clean and refreshing. This restaurant is at a smaller scale located at the border of LA and Pasadena. The food is decent. We've had their pastas to steaks and I'd give the quality of their food a solid 4. The ambiance is just nice. The crowd is older so don't be looking to find a younger more hip like crowd in this restaurant. I think this restaurant has been around for years and the clientele are those who've been coming here for that same amount of time. They have a full bar and they serve good drinks too. Stoney Point is one of the few remaining family-owned restaurants in Pasadena as many have been replaced by big, corporate chains. Not knowing what to expect, we walked in with t-shirts and shorts for a quick, early dinner one evening. As soon as we walked in, we felt that we should have changed to more appropriate dinner attire; however, the owners, Amadeo and Antoinette, immediately made us feel like family so we stayed and chose to have dinner at the bar. This has since become our "go to" neighborhood restaurant for good cocktails, well-made Italian food, and warm ambience with old school charm. Many patrons are from the local area. Casual dinner wear to night-on-the-town attire is completely acceptable. We especially love the San Rafael salad as a starter - lots of spinach and a light, but very flavorful dressing. Their petite filet is always cooked as requested and melts in your mouth without being dried out - served with nicely made mash potatoes and vegetables cooked just right. Their lasagna is one of the best I've had. They have open mic on Saturday evenings in the bar and anyone who wants to, can sing - piano player provided. Show tunes to Frank Sinatra to Italian Opera is on the menu. This is not sing along karaoke but real talent. I expect that most performers are in "the business", however, a few I have talked with have only ever sang here. Kelly is their primary bartender on the weekend. I ordered the Stoney Point Chicken (breast of chicken rolled with prosciutto and mozzarella with madera sauce), my friend had One Half Roasted Duck w/ lorange sauce, and the 3rd friend ordered Freshwater Prawns sauteed with spicy tomato sauce, served with angle hair pasta. We also had Calamari to share which is one of the perfectly cooked ones I've had. The food is right on point as how it was described on the menu with no fuzz. The service is also excellent. Never-mind the somewhat overpriced entrees for what you get, or the just OK service (and what's wrong with service with a frown, and I guess it's ok if they don't ask a person with a beverage whether they need a refill, or even if they, lord forbid, don't ask anyone whether they want a refill of those very basic dinner rolls - one per person limit). And forget it too, that the entry you ordered was suppose to come with vegetables and potatoes on the side but didn't (although side dishes were indicated on the menu, possibly the sides are not included when one orders something with pasta??). Why I am giving them 1 star is for the food, or at least the dish I ordered: SHRIMP AL DIAVOLO Jumbo shrimp with spicy tomato sauce served over bed of spaghetti for $26.95. The pasta itself despite being somewhat over cooked, and with the unimaginative sauce which trenched it --was not the big problem, however, the shrimp were. Although not a culinary expert, I would think that Shrimp can only be frozen and thawed out so many times before it starts to taste like paste -- and these shrimp did. I have to wonder whether the cooks or the management ever tried this dish. Basically, uneatable. Ok, so why did I eat it and not complain. Well I was hungry, and at least 1/2 of each shrimp was not completely corn mush in texture -- and secondly you all know what happens to a plate you return to the kitchen -- and what hidden ingredients might be in the subsequent plate of food you get in return (I will leave that to your imaginations).
