Found this place while showing a friend around Red Hook. Authentic key lime pie sounded like too good a thing to pass up. When I saw the Yelp check-in offer for 10% off a large pie, my mind was made up. I took home a fresh pie, chilled it in the fridge, then plated a few slices for my friends and me. We loved it! By far the tastiest key lime pie I've ever had. Delicious crust and to-die-for filling. I see what all the fuss is about! Sorry, but I was underwhelmed. For a place supposedly focused on Key Lime Pies, I wasn't impressed. The first thing I noticed was, right out of the refrigerator, the pie was mushy. I expected to take it out and let it get to room temperature to soften up and be more palatable. As far as taste, I was unimpressed. My suggestion is to scrape the zest from the limes and add that. I have a recipe for Atlantic Beach Pie, which is readily available if you do a search. The first time I made it, it was mediocre. After that, I started zesting the citrus (lemons, limes, or a combo) and adding that to the mix. Game change. I would put MY version of Atlantic Beach Pie, a summer kind of thing, against Steve's pies any day. The zest makes the difference. Maybe Steve should think about adding the zest. read more

I find it really crazy that I have never reviewed the best Key Lime Pie ever. I am ashamed at the the amount of times I have visited Steve's in the past year and never did my duty to give them a rave review. I have tried every pie size, every pie popsicle and they all are amazing. I buy pies year round, and like to buy them frozen since they travel well. I love keylime pie and couldn't wait to try this spot. When I arrived I parked nearby. I walked up and ordered through a window with a young man. I ordered the classic swingle and it was dipped in chocolate. I never had a chocolate covered keylime pie. I paid close to $6 and left. When I got in the car, I dug in and boy was it good. What a great spot in Red Hook right next to a beautiful park and pier. Magnificent views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. There was no line when we arrived around noon and I treated myself to the raspberry swingle, and my girlfriend had the classic swingle. We both really enjoyed how they weren't extremely tart and the fact that they were covered with delicious chocolate was even better. They were semi-frozen when we got them but warmed up a lot with the sun and we're just down right delectable. read more

Safe to say, this is my favorite Key Lime Pie place in NY, if not the entire world As opposed to other places that serve a lot of options but are known for one good dish, Steve's focuses on what's on the sign out front - Key Lime Pie. You get the option to order your pie in either individual size, or a larger size that can (but doesn't have to if you're not in a sharing mood) feed 4 or 8 people. Little picnic tables in front of the window let you dig right in and enjoy. The pie is creamy and tart highlighting the delicious Florida key limes and a crumbley graham cracker crust gives a nice taste to finish on. The only downside about eating in front of the store is that the plastic forks they provide aren't sturdy enough to really dig into the pie (that and there's never enough pie to really get your fill) read more

This little shop is soooo adorable. For plain key lime pies, they show the size of the tins at the door. For the specialty flavors, they come in a little lollipop form called a Swingle. They also offer fresh squeezed limeade or coffee. Plenty of benches right in front of the store, or you can walk over to the park/pier area. Good key lime pie. I was wandering deep into Red Hook and found this little tiny gem next to the park. The only one shop that open alone among the factory. Key lime was a highlight. Obviously it's good but I don't feel much different from the commercial one like Costco. However, the Raspberry Blonde was a MUST. It's frozen like ice bar but has many layers inner. Key lime, Raspberry and white Chocolate. $8 hmmm $$$ They have the original one if I have a chance to visit Res Hook again, I'll definitely stop by again. By virtue of being one of only two pie places in America (trivia might be outdated) that actually uses key limes, is reason enough to venture into the industrial wild to satisfy your novelty craving. Admittedly, this location is a bitch to get to. I'm a city boy. I don't drive. I guess I'm used to good old fashioned mass produced highly processed pies, where filling is normally dense; the cream? was about two textures away from being considered a liquid... goop? Not a draw back, just taken aback. The filling tasted like limes as predicted but you don't really get a hint of key. Sorry guys. Might I suggest munching on something with a more metallic taste that has iron... possibly fishy on occasion? Not normally in this part of the city, so had to try one of these popular pies on a late Saturday afternoon. Small kiosk up front where you place your order and bring to one of the wooden table-benches outside. Between two people, shared the 4" Tart ($5.50) - which came out within a few minutes. Pie looks good in it's small aluminum container - a crumbly crust engulfing a rich tart center. Glad this was shared as it was a lot of sweetness and tart to have the whole thing in one go. Looks like you can take several to go, as well as have delivery. Next time would want to try "the Swingle" to see if that's the better item. read more

I have been on somewhat of a quest to find the best key lime pie for over 20 years. I just heard about Steve's last week when I was in the neighborhood for a Latinx art exhibit. My friend told me there was a key lime spot nearby. I got my son, to ask his friend who lives in the neighborhood. Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies was the midway stop on our Brooklyn Food Tour. We read so much about this place and decided that it was a must-try given the reviews. The business appears to be operated out of a redone storage unit; the environment is super cool and they have picnic-style seating right outside the establishment where customers can enjoy their treats. We opted for the The Raspberry Swingle and a Single Serve Key Lime Pie. Prices were very reasonable and service was quick and friendly. The Raspberry Swingle - Not sure if this was just a me thing, but I wasn't the biggest fan of this one. I felt like the raspberry overpowered the flavor of the actual pie, and the chocolate seemed unnecessary. I was a bit confused how it ended up tasting, so I guess this option just wasn't for me. I'm sure other people who prefer a mix of flavors might like this one better, but unfortunately I felt like the Swingle obscured the actual flavor of the key lime pie. Single Serve Key Lime Pie - This was mind blowing. I'm so glad I got this, else I would have left here with a mediocre impression from the Swingle. The crust was light and crumbly and the pie filling was rich. I could definitely taste the key lime flavor; it was almost the perfect bite of dessert. I could honestly come here again and again for this and never get tired of it. Overall, I think there's something for everyone here. While the Swingle was not what I was looking for, I'm sure there are some who would prefer it over the regular pie. I'm a big fan of Keylime pie. So much so that I booked marked this place and told my better half that we have to get a pie before we go back home. On our last full day we got our hands on their Keylime pie. With anticipation I took a small bite just waiting to taste the tartness you would think you'd taste. So I was surprised that I didn't taste that. I told my better half to try it and watched her expression. She didn't make that face of oh my but a meh. I took another bite (btw I did like the crust of it) thinking that I may have not gotten a big enough piece, but the same thing. To me IMHO, the pie tasted more eggy rather than that tangy, tart flavor. Maybe it was a bad batch or our taste buds were off. I hate to say this, but out of our food journey to NYC this was the most disappointing thing that I've eaten. Seeing all the 5 star reviews, I'm thinking we had a bad batch. Hey it happens as everyone is human and things happen. I know this as a friend of ours is a great Baker and in one batch of cookies he forgot an ingredient and he didn't realize until someone said something and then he realized what he left out. It was quite the adventure to find this little hidden place but it was so worth it. The idea of having frozen key lime pie dipped in chocolate seemed odd at first but after trying it.. I think it might be one of the best dessert combinations. We tried the Original Swingle at first which came out a little over $6 with tax. With the every bite, you get a nice crunch from the chocolate, a simple crumbly crust inside and soft limey center. The dark chocolate was not too sweet and absolutely fantastic. After devouring it, we went back for seconds for the Raspberry Swingle which was also great. I recommend letting the raspberry defrost more before eating. Their Keylime pies are delicious of course. When I go visit my daughter and her family in Brooklyn I try to get the opportunity to go to Steve's. The people work there are just lovely and Steve's really has a place in the community. They take part in special events and fundraisers. I was there for the Barnacle parade and it did not disappoint. It was actually a parade to commemorate hurricane Sandy coming through Redhook and causing devastation. But this was a celebration of life and rebirth.
