Long time listener, first time caller. I've heard of Stephen's On State for years, but other than stopping in for a quick drink before a show at Media Theatre, I've never really knew what they had to offer. That changed the other night. Ambiance: Nice old school/ new school steakhouse vibe - just a bit brighter. Service: Excellent. Waitress and waitstaff were friendly, helpful, and attentive. They all seemed to work very well together and it made for a great experience. Items came out hot, promptly removed when we finished, and we had everything we wanted when we needed it. A+ Food: Baked clams were hot and fresh, but they fell flat. Even after adding salt, they just didn't hit the mark. A good baked clam highlights the clam, but surrounds it with simple flavor. Not bad by any means, but I get BCs a lot, and these didn't really rank. Ahi Tuna App: OK. Cold, but was more pink than red. Seaweed salad was lacking. Lacked overall flavor all around, just ok. C+ Seafood Fra Diavolo: Excellent! Fresh clams, mussels, shrimp, crab, and a flavor-packed sauce that was well-seasoned, bright, and had the perfect amount of kick - well, we added a bit more. The pasta was delicious and everything came out piping hot and had a nice brothy sauce with a nice amount if tomato texture. Well done - not everyone gets this right, but it's great when a steakhouse delivers a quality pasta dish. Spice Crusted NY Strip: Highly recommended by our waitress and she was right. This was a higj-quality cut, seasoned and spiced well, cooked a perfect medium-rare, and the shallot butter was amazing. This is what you want in a NY strip. Green beans were great, and mashed were ok. Yo - a delicious steak! Bananas Foster: who can't love a tableside dessert like this. Great entertainment value and despite being pretty full, we finished every last bite. Minor complaint - special was $14, we were charged regular price at $16. State Street Smoked Old Fashioned: I'm an Old Fashioned connoisseur, and this unfortunately missed the mark. Every steakhouse needs to have a kick-ass OF, this was not. It was bright red like HiC and as the institution's first cocktail listed, they should consider revamping this recipe - my $.02. It lacks the key characteristics of this classic cocktail. It did not get drank. I didn't say anything and I'm sure they would have made something else, that's just not me. We ended the night in the bar area listening to a cool band to a packed and lively bar. Overall, a really great experience and we'll be back. read more

Caesar salad - delicious. Rating 5/5 Baked clams (well done)- out of this world. Rating 5/5. Ribeye steak topped with Gorgonzola. I ordered the steak medium it was well. I didn't send it back as it was the end of the night. Last time I was here I sent back because it was well also. The meat quality is great and next time I come I think I'll just order it medium rare to be safe. The green beans and mashed potatoes that came with the meal did not seem fresh. Have been going here for years but lately it seems to be in decline. The bartenders on a Friday seem disinterested and after working in this industry for years maybe Im too detail oriented. Pouring a draft beer is a pretty simple skill I thought (see attached pic). Im wondering if maybe they were effected by the power failure as the beer was not really cold and also kinda flat. We ordered an app and we both thought it tasted "off" so we didnt eat it other than 1 bite each. In my experience when a customer doesnt really touch their food u might wanna inquire why........ Again kinda disinterested attitude. Too many choices on State street to not be concerned as an owner/mgr but that just my opinion. I go there almost every Tuesday for the open mic, which is managed superbly by the band, Side Hustle. They are great, by the way, and nice people! My only issues with Stephen's are that the stage is small, the only bathroom is tiny, and the menu could use more vegetarian-friendly food. That said, the atmosphere is very friendly, and I enjoy going there with friends and family. read more

I dined here on a summer Wednesday night for "Dining under the Stars" - the atmosphere was awesome. The group that I dined with intended to eat at another restaurant originally but when we learned what the wait time was for our original option, we wandered into this place. We were seated immediately. The menu selection was fair - I was a little undecided about what I wanted for an entree so I ordered the Stephen Chicken, which came with chicken, shrimp, mashed potatoes and spinach. The dish was so bland; I was able to send it back and order the Penne a la Vodka, which pretty good. 3 others in my party did not like their food. The scallop appetizer was very very good. The salmon and shrimp was pretty good. The chicken and shrimp dish was meh - good sauce, overcooked chicken and shrimp that wasn't special. Both cocktails were very good. I vacillated between a 3 and 4 rating and went with 4 because it was a very busy night and the apps and drinks were so good. My family decided last minute to head to Stephens on State for dinner. It wasn't hard to find parking right in front of the restaurant but don't always expect that to be the case. We were seated fairly quickly for a party of 6 and we sat in a semi private area which was really nice. Our server came over to take our drink and appetizer orders and provide some suggestions. My friends and I came here after trying to get into 3 different restaurants even with a reservation made on one of the places websites and they told us they weren't doing food anymore. It was around 9:45pm and we thought we were out of luck for food at this point. A manager got us at the hostess stand and ended up seating us and serving us anyways for my friend's birthday! Our servers name was Leila and she definitely had to stay later than she was originally supposed to for us, which we are very grateful for. She was still sooo kind and gave the best service. The food here also a 10/10. This place made my friend's birthday dinner sooo special and overall just is an amazing place thanks to the staff!! This restaurant is in the heart of downtown Media shopping and restaurant district. When dining here you can get a lot of fun things in. Many so called steak restaurants rarely accomplish this but Steven's on State did. The steak was cooked as requested it was perfect! I liked the mashed potatoes and string beans, the added crab cake was just okay it could have been more flavorful. My server did not give her name but she moved quick, professional and pleasant. Like a pro. I can also say the same for the young man who served the water, bread and got me boxes to go. I ordered a white cosmo(?) if you like Tito's vodka and elderflower liqueur this drink is for you. Is was for me!!! They also serve pretty good bread and dipping oil. As for the overall experience it was good but pricey considering the old dark decor. The prices are for a more high end restaurant not the local bar. I also thought the restaurant could have been cleaner. If there was hand sanitizer etc., available it wasn't obvious like other restaurants. Stephen's is one of my favorite bars in Media. The atmosphere is friendly and unpretentious. The drinks are priced affordably, the food is decent, and the service is attentive and accommodating to the needs of patrons. I went with a friend Wednesday night during "Dining Under the Stars." The tables were clean and spaced out appropriately pursuant to social distance guidelines. When we were seated, the server brought out glasses of water, took our order for drinks, and gave us bread to nibble. The bread was soft and the oil mixture added a nice touch. We mainly went for drinks, so I only ordered a side of fries and my friend ordered the starter dish of shrimp lejon - bacon wrapped jumbo shrimp with horseradish cream (pictured). The shrimp with bacon was delectable, and the fries were warm and crispy. The server was very attentive and nice. She came by multiple times to check on us and see how we're doing. We hadn't been here in several years and decided to give it a try since we were in the area. It wasn't crowded at 730 on a Sunday. But it was quiet and our server was friendly and attentive. The French onion soup and Caesar salad were above average. The soup was quite large. The entrees were another matter. The stuffed chicken wasn't stuffed, but was just a thin chicken breast that was very overcooked on mashed potatoes with a few sausage rounds and asparagus for $26. Boring and mostly flavorless. The crab cakes were probably the worst we've ever had. Overcooked and they tasted gross. Sent that back for a chicken Caesar. Again dry and overcooked chicken on a good salad. We won't be back anytime soon. Given the lack of people and poor food, I suspect they may not be around much longer. read more

I came here with my parents and boyfriend to celebrate his 27th birthday on a Sunday evening. We were promptly seated and took the birthday cake I brought in. We looked at the menu and wanted to order the ribeye. Our server comes and told us the ribeye is sold out. Alright... we chose the filet mignon. Server came back and said it is also sold out. Okay... so now the server is listing everything that is sold out that night (including the free bread that they give for the table) and that leaves us with basically 3 choices from the menu. We ordered the NY strip (the only steak available) and asked for it to be cooked medium. It came out SO well done that it was burnt. We couldn't eat 1/2 of the steak because it was so tough. Overall, do NOT go here on a Sunday because apparently by that day - everything is sold out and there's nothing left to cook in the kitchen. I first went to Stephens on State as part of an office holiday party. The food was amazing, so I was excited to try it again. I found an awesome Groupon that gave me $50 credit towards Stephen's for the price of $20, so I thought there couldn't be a better opportunity. We ordered the crab cakes and seafood bucatini and both were excellent. The restaurant is a little on the pricy side, but I thought it was well worth it given the amount of seafood on our plates. The crab cake was full of fresh crab and the bucatini had plentiful prawns, scallops, and mussels. Worst meal - definitely would not return. Terrible service - waitress clearly did not want to be there and made it known. I ordered a steak at this "famous" steak house. It was overcooked (not pink as asked for - not a big deal, stuff happens) however when I was finally able to find the waitress to request a new steak, she said she needed the manager's approval to replace my overcooked steak. The manager came over, took my plate and then returned about two minutes later with his cell phone. He showed me a picture of a steak and asked if it looked like mine when it came out. I told him the picture looked great (pink inside) but the steak they gave me was gray inside. He then tells me this was my steak - but as a favor would cook me another steak. What kind of restaurant tries to demean their patrons by questioning their integrity? FYI this was a $54 steak so I was not going to eat a steak that was prepared incorrectly. Padded bill ruined the experience for me. Let's do the math. I had a $100 Groupon that I bought for $55. My friend and I ordered food and drinks. Bill came to $81. Groupon didn't cover alcohol so I figured we'd just leave a nice tip and pay for drinks. Perfect right? WRONG!!! Our server forced us to order more food then added a mandatory 20% gratuity. So in the end, miraculously, our bill came up to $181 ($100 Groupon + $81 cash). So basically I paid $55 for an extra entree that I didn't want that usually costs $30 on their menu. Boooooo! NYE at Stephen's was disappointing. It used to be a fun place filled with good music, great food and great vibes. What happened? The lobster bisque was more like tomato soup consistency without lobster! The baked clams were small and gritty. The shrimp lejon came out hot and delicious. My sea bass was good but was room temperature at best. My husband had the filet which he described as good but over priced. The DJ was scheduled to start at 9pm but didn't start til after 10 because they were still sitting customers on the "stage" at 8:30?? The drinks were good and the service was great. What I will say is that I would NEVER recommend dining here and that out of our party of eight that NONE of us will ever return. The service was bad. The management was bad. On top of that, the menus themselves had different prices so some of our party had one set of prices and others had another set of prices. They have a very large happy hour crowd and it's an older crowd. It gives a false sense of this place being popular and worth a trip but it is all a facade. I actually never realized how low their yelp rating is until I checked in. I haven't been here in YEARS and if I saw that star rating I wouldn't have even bothered. I don't go to restaurants that are rated this poorly. The bathrooms were fine. The place is pretty small. There is street parking available. The food selection and taste was just so-so. I asked for hot tea, Earl Grey. "Sorry, we only have Lipton." Hmm... I had the prime rib eggs rolls. They are a cheese steak wrapped in an egg roll wrapper and deep fried. The was a sauce on the plate under the egg rolls. The sauce had no flavor. I had to look at the menu; it supposedly was horseradish sauce. There was absolutely no flavor of horseradish or spicy bite. I also had the prime rib sandwich. The meat was shaved, and it also supposedly had horseradish sauce - no flavor. Lunch prices were ok. In summary, I was underwhelmed. read more
