Old State Tavern gets a solid 4 stars because it has a fairly extensive menu with several different burgers and sandwiches to choose from, all for a great price! Each burger + fries is like $14. That's really good! And the burgers were really solid. Everyone was happy! The beer selection was meh, but it'll get the job done. Lager, pilsner, IPA, probably some stout or some such... something for everyone, I reckon. When you walk in, there is a good to fair chance that it'll be full of regulars watching a Phillies game or some such. Just sit yourself, order the food from the bar, enjoy the food for not much money, and be glad that you stopped in. I also got the buff chick cheesesteak. Solid. Not amazing, but definitely solid. I've been a regular here for years, primarily for the wings, and have always had good experiences. That ended last night. My band had just finished playing a show nearby and we stopped in, genuinely looking forward to the food. In the parking lot, an individual none of us knew -- a college-aged kid who appeared out of nowhere -- was told by the bouncer to put his beer away. Instead of complying, he poured it down his pants. The bouncer then assumed this person was part of our group and refused us entry. At no point did anyone ask whether we knew him. When we tried to clarify, the bartender was dismissive and told us they wouldn't serve us because of our supposed association with him. No questions, no benefit of the doubt, just a blanket assumption. I understand that staff have to make quick judgment calls at the door, and I don't fault them for addressing the actual problem. What I take issue with is the refusal to spend ten seconds verifying who was actually involved before turning away a group of paying customers -- one of whom has spent a fair amount of money here over the years. The wings are good. The way the staff handled this was not. We won't be returning. read more

This place is always solid-pretty much a local bar, great place to watch a game-Phils were on last time I visited. Waitstaff is the best around-they all help each other in the name of good service. Patrons are always cool, never any drama. A bit loud inside, but then again, it's a bar. Food is always consistent-good wings, cheesesteaks, fries, burgers-can't go wrong with any items on the menu. So, this review is more about professionalism and integrity rather than just a food review. It's also a tale of two very different restaurant experiences in Media PA We went to La Catrina on State Street first for a very early 4:00 ish bite. There's always that one really loud guy at the bar, but this time there were three including the bartender. The " Bros" had no problem yelling, and using the F-bomb without thinking about the diners near the bar. Long story short, I had my really bad glass of Happy Hour Pinot and we left.bi noticed that a couple near us had also requested to move to another part of the restaurant because of the guys at the bar. We ended up at Old State Street which was packed, but still so much quieter than La Catrina. Our adorable server, Cara was super busy but so efficient and kind. My husband and I both ordered drinks and the Chicken Fiesta Salafd which was delish. My husband ordered the fried pickle app. Not good. Very little pickle but tons of fried stuff. Cara asked if it was Ok and we honestly said no. She asked if we wanted to speak to the manager, and I said no, not necessary ... assuming that she was very busy. So the lovely manager , Joanne, DID come to our table, sincerely apologized , asked about what was wrong and took the order off the bill. I was so impressed that Cara cared enough to mention this to the manager and that Joanne took the time to talk to us, even though it was just about an inexpensive app. I hope that the upper management shows their appreciation to these two exceptional employees. Last night in the area and I was pleasantly surprised, again! I had several locals tell me that I had to stop by and try the chili cheese dog. To be honest, I wasn't all that siked about strolling in for a hot dog, but they had a great beer selection so I figured it wouldn't be terrible even if it was a bomb...it was not a bomb, it was the bomb! The hot dog was firm and had great flavor on its own, but between it and the house chili and cheese sauce all encased in a wonderful bread that was just sturdy enough to hold it all together...good lord, what a chili dog. I have NEVER been impressed with a chili dog, but this place made it so. If you are in the area, please, stop by and give this local gem a try, hopefully they do you as right as they did me! I also tried the wings, and even though they were a little small, both flavors were great and cooked perfectly. The service was great, everyone had a blast and the regulars were a hoot to talk to. Saw the great reviews and was in the mood for a good burger. Ordered the cowboy burger from a nice server. It took 20 minutes to cook in a nearly empty restaurant. It came out almost inedible. The burger seems to be a frozen patty that was cooked to death and beyond. It was dry and hard. Even the onion ring was nearly burnt. Top bun was freezing cold. Flavorless BBQ sauce. This was the most pathetic attempt at a burger I've seen in years. Server took off one of two overcooked burgers, so that was nice. I won't be back. read more

First time here: Landed later in the evening at PHL (in town for work). Stopped in aro 20:00 and the bar atmosphere was great. Local sports bar, very welcoming. The bartender was friendly and helpful helping me navigate beer and food. Ordered an ipa and chicken cheesesteak w/ mushrooms, peppers, onions. It was on point. Good roll, just messy enough, etc. house made chips were a solid side. Would have loved some sour cream w/french onion dip for the chips, but I didn't ask. The photos on Yelp encouraged me to visit this neighboring restaurant.? I'm glad I did, the photo of the French onion soup in particular was the deciding factor to visit Old State Tavern. It MORE than lived up to its hype! The decor was dated but very neat, clean, organized and a quite nice size space. Although it is a traditional bar it has restaurant style seating, pub area seats, and a pool table for the family to enjoy. I would say; especially during the daytime it is acceptable to bring young children to enjoy the food and a game of pool as a family. The onion soup was absolutely delicious. A nice flavorful broth that wasn't overly salty, cooked with enough onions under a generous layer of very deliciously gooey cheese. I said enough because there are two crispy flavorful onion rings that topped the soup. You can blend it in with the cheese and a nice spoonful of broth. To steal a quote from a soup company it was 'um um good'! The Old State Burger was great! Fresh and possibly homemade patties that fills the bun, the melting Swiss cheese with A 1 sauce is a nice touch. The fries are decent but not my fav. On the other hand the homemade chips were a hit. If our server gave us her name I missed it but you can't miss her she's having a baby. (CONGRATULATIONS) she was very pleasant, prompt and she offered good suggestions and answered all of our questions. Very good amount of cheese and melt. A little light on mushrooms. I am sorry, it was 11 am super bowl Sunday so it may have been my mouth but I did like the consistency of the meat. I'd love to write two reviews on this joint with two radically different numbers of stars! As I can't do that I'll have to stick with one review and the issue is SMOKE. This is a smoking bar and when I visit one of those I usually award one star and almost never return. I never thought I would say this but this is a smoking bar that I would visit again. This is a very impressive dive bar. If there is such a thing as a top tier dive bar than this is it. The property is beautifully maintained both inside and out. It has its own convenient parking lot. No need to feed the meter monster. Inside there is a giant horseshoe bar. You also have regular tables, high-tops and booths. They love their tech here. There are plenty of flat screen TVs and tons of electronic games. Some of the games are even in booths! You don't come here for the food. The kitchen must be just a fryer and a freezer. Everything is fried and designed to absorb alcohol. My bartender was just fine and the drink prices were in line with the area so no problems there. If this bar was NON-SMOKING I could easily become a regular and go with four stars. As I'm stuck with one review and considering the limited food, I'm going with three. read more

Had to update my review! Cue I love this bar by Toby keith. Old state tavern is the best bar out of all of media. it has such a great atmosphere and the bartenders are so friendly. The food is also top-notch. Do yourself a favor and get the old state tavern signature sauce wings. It's the best sauce I've ever had on wings in my life. I'm in here all the time because I love the atmosphere and people. A lot of the media bars tend to have an uptight atmosphere and are over the top expensive. Not at old state. You're treated kindly by everyone. Dress up or down, nobody really cares One suggestion I would make is to add a cocktail menu. Just like some cheap mixed drinks. That's literally all you're missing. Everything else is perfect. And pro-tip, they have a TouchTunes jukebox, so the music is always amazing. At least when I'm there. Haha read more

If you're in Media and looking for an authentic sports bar, Old State Tavern is the only choice. All the other places struggle with lighting, monitor placement, ambiance and so forth. Not Old State. Dan the owner has it all down to a science. Amazingly, this is the ONLY bar/restaurant in Media with a pool table. The service is excellent, the bartenders are the best in town bar none. The food is top notch as well. Burgers, wings, cheesesteaks -- you can't go wrong here. They just launched a new menu loaded with amazing items, you could pick up a dart and throw it at the menu and you'd be happy with your selection, everything here is unique and delicious. The wings in particular are some of the best I've ever had. If you're looking for a genuine sports bar in the Delco area, Old State is at the top of the list. read more

Finally tried this place after living in Media for almost 13years. Our son had a basketball game less than half a mile from this place, so we stopped by to get some appetizers and a quick beer. My husband got the foot-long chili dog, which look delicious and he said was excellent. The homemade chips were crunchy but chewy at the same time, yum. My mother-in-law and I split the hot wings and the onion rings, both of which were excellent. The wings may be some of the best wings I've ever had. The draft beer was cold, and our server Brooke approached us right away to take our drink orders, despite the fact that she was manning a very crowded bar as well as the tables. I don't give 5 star reviews often, but when a small bar/pub exceeds expectations in all areas, it deserves it First off, this is a small and kind of underwhelming first impression place, but don't be fooled. The waitress/bartender (Kim) was great! Helpful, knowledgeable and pleasant/cheerful as well as attentive...which Is pretty amazing because I think she was covering the whole place. The beers were great (Leinenkugels summer shandy never disappoints) and the food was way way above average. The wings, crispy and delicious. The loaded fries (and regular fries) crispy and delicious (good job on having a properly hot fryer!). The burgers were excellent (and actually cooked medium when asked for medium...not well done!). The chicken quesadilla was excellent. Not a thing to complain about and the prices were fair as well. I understand why it has such good reviews here, it deserves them. read more

I was a regular here in the early 2000's. Beers and shots and gnarly little wings that the bartender often had to cook with a full room of drinkers. Sometimes they were good, sometimes burnt so you took what you could get. First time back in probably 12-15 years today and let me tell you times have changed. Still comfortable and local and friendly but the food has taken a sharp upturn. Wings were 5 outta 5. Right size (too big can be chewy) right sauce, bang. Unfortunately they were out of the foot long hotdogs but they're getting a pass on that because the roast pork sandwich was very good. They're not breaking any new ground here but the chow is solid which it wasn't back in the day. Beers were icy cold and the vibes were warm. We might become regulars again! read more
