Wonderful coffee and ambiance. My boyfriend and I come here to study. He visits every Sunday to order the PSL. Yum.

This place is an absolute GEM if you love high quality coffee and beans. We were visiting from NorCal, and during our brief stay in Carlsbad, we came here three times in the span of two days. It's that good!! On one visit, we parked closer to the downtown shops and walked in to this little coffee shop, tucked within a business complex. On another visit, we parked in the lot (there was plenty of parking on the weekend when we visited!). They roast their own beans and have a wide variety of beans for sale, as well as their own clothing merchandise, coffee drink ware, and coffee brewing equipment. We purchased beans from Ethiopia, and it was an absolute pleasure getting to drink them at home. On our first visit, we sat at an inside corner table, the perfect people-watching spot. One thing I noticed is that there was almost always a line. Clearly we came to the right place for coffee. I got a cup of DRIP COFFEE, and my husband got a COLD FASHIONED. Their drip coffee is phenomenal. So crisp and clean! On our second visit, I got a ROSEMARY LATTE with oat milk to go. It was incredible! The sweetness was perfect (aka not too sweet) and the rosemary flavor was spot on (aka not too overwhelming), allowing the espresso to still shine through! There was an actual sprig of rosemary in the drink, which was a beautiful touch. On our third visit, I got an OATMILK CAPPUCCINO and my husband got a COLD BREW. Again, both drinks were spot on, and you cannot go wrong with any drink here. We sat outside; they have plenty of outdoor seating, and the weather was usually so amiable, that being in the outdoors was very enjoyable. They have a beautiful aesthetic here. Their stoneware mugs are earthy and have the perfect weight in your hand. So if you have a chance to stay and sip, please do. An all-around pleasant experience! read more

My go-to neighborhood coffee shop I almost don't want to rave about this place bc it's still kind of a Carlsbad hidden gem. I LOVE their espresso (the Honey Please w/almond milk is my fave drink). We actually buy our coffee beans exclusively from here and grind them every morning. The Magdalena roast is mellow and easy to drink. The staff are always so friendly and chill. And now that they've expanded the space, you could literally work here all day with the relaxing vibes and smell of delicious coffee. 10/10 recommend steady state. read more

Went as a group before we walked around town. Definitely a niche coffee shop that serves great pour over coffee. I got a regular vanilla iced latte and it was great ratio of coffee to milk and ice. Staff seemed friendly and helped our group decide on what to pick from their specialty menu. Plenty of spaces to sit indoor and outdoor. There are a ton of coffee shops within a half mile radius of this spot, but I would definitely recommend it if you're nearby. read more

Steady State was a nice find as I was in the area for a few days and was not happy with the beans I had on hand. The cold brew was very tasty. I ended up buying several bags of coffee for myself and for gifts. I will try ordering from them. What could be improved is employee knowledge of coffee and brew method/recipes from brewers they sell. I probably would have bought more had the people working been knowledgeable. The person who gave me my pourover didn't know anything about the beans or brewing equipment they sold. This keeps it from being a 5 star coffee shop like Coffee Movement SF or Moonwake Coffee Roasters SJ. read more

Wow! As soon as I took a sip of my flat white, I could not believe how smooth it was. My friend and I repeatedly said how amazing our drinks tasted. The place is spacious and very open. It will be a great place to chill and get some work done. Staff were extremely friendly. I did order in advance (about 15 minutes before I got there) and I still had to wait for my drink. If I was in a rush, that might have been an issue. It takes a bit too long for a drink. This is the reason why I gave this place a 4 star instead of 5. Quality coffee and a great vibe! There's no shortage of coffee shops in Carlsbad Village, but Steady State is tucked away so you might miss it if you're not local to the area. It's a great option if you're looking to avoid the tourist scene and along lines. The staff is always calm, collected and welcoming, and I rate their fresh coffee beans as being one of, if not the best in the Village. I typically order a Café Americano, sometimes with steamed milk and cinnamon. My wife and I enjoy their drinks so much that we started purchasing the whole bean espresso so we can enjoy it while at home. I've never tried their food, but the pastry case is always filled with fresh scones, cookies, turnovers, and other creations. While there is limited seating inside, it's never overly crowded and they do setup outdoor tables and umbrellas in the parking lot. My recommendation- You should definitely consider Steady State if you're looking for great coffee in Carlsbad Village! read more

There was nothing I did not like about this place. After lunch my friend and I decided we wanted coffee so I searched Yelp for what was nearby (I'm always on the hunt for new coffee spots, especially small uniques ones). This was really close and the reviews were great. It is a bit challenging to find and we drove around for a bit trying g to find it. Turns out you have to walk through a small complex to the parking lot in the back and turn left. We almost gave up but I'm glad my friend urged me to keep looking. It's a great little space and I love how they have done the interior. I also love looking at the options of grinders, aeropress, coffee beans, etc. I'm a nerd for that stuff. The guy at the counter was really friendly and patiently answered my questions which I'm sure they are asked over and over again. I decided on the honey please (a honey infused latte with fresh cinnamon grated on top). It was really good and not too sweet. The outdoor area was a perfect addition and it was a really nice day. Will definitely come back when I'm over this way (I live a little further south). read more

I always look for top notch coffee when I'm on vacation and Steady State delivered. I had saved a couple of shops in Carlsbad to try but after going here I couldn't help but come back every day. Friendly baristas, excellent pour over coffee, and good food. I even picked up a bag of beans to brew back at home. The atmosphere was really laid back, a mix of folks working, meeting with a friend, families with kids, and neighbors popping in for their daily coffee. Steady State is on the top of my list next time I'm in Carlsbad. read more

In 2020, my mom asked what I wanted for Christmas. I said something local and suggested coffee. I thought it'd be great to receive something USEFUL, yet also supporting local business in the midst of the chaos. In 2021, I asked for the same thing. Steady State could become a traditional Christmas gift. Their coffee you brew at home is dynamite! I love the single origin, but the blends are also great! The actual shop is quaint, yet roomy. A great local coffee shop to get a great cup of Java, hang out, and eat something good too! Ordered Americano & first off there's only one size which equates to a small-med anywhere in AZ. So only 2 shots of espresso. I ordered one extra shot since I wanted a large coffee, which would have 4 shots in any good coffee shop. Even in this smallish-med cup the coffee was adequately strong but not as strong as expected. This set me back $5 AND they do not have heavy cream. Another cheap out. No 1/2 & 1/2 is not the same. Not even close. Even more of a downer is the Espresso has weird "tangy" flavor to the coffee. I don't like it. I tolerated it since I wasted $6 on it but won't be back for more. Ambiance note: people like to take up residence inside and work on devices. On the plus side, dogs are allowed & lots of them. I don't have one right now but dog-friendly places get an extra star more than they deserve otherwise. Bathroom is clean & even has paper towels. A seeming anomaly in CA. Good parking lot. Lots of outdoor seating the lawn chairs in lot are a fun touch & comfortable. Sadly I cannot recommend the coffee however. read more

Busy Friday late morning. But got my salmon focaccia sandwich quickly after ordering and my rosemary latte in a reasonable amount of time. I ate both at the shop. The sandwich tasted great! The sandwich had arugula, pickled onions, lox salmon, and dill cream cheese. The rosemary latte had a sprig of real rosemary that left sublet hints of rosemary taste while drinking the whole latte. I am tremendously envious that Carlsbad has such an amazing roaster and cafe. This spot really knows what it's doing with the best of the best coffee equipment for sale and beans that can get pretty crazy for us coffee snobs. Parking is easy in the lot. The cafe is spacious and has plenty of seating. The drinks are interesting. I live 40 miles away and would drive back here since amazing coffee spots are not plenty in the South OC. read more

Quickie Update: I just had the Guadalupe coffee today. I knew by the scent I would enjoy it, but when I first opened the bag and looked inside, I was like, "meh, a light roast..." That said, upon first sip, I was wowed. Steady State really knows how to roast their beans! It's super sweet, honey-forward and not bright at all... I'm not a big fan of acidic flavors. This coffee exceeded my expectations! Plus one star! -------------------------------------------- I've been meaning to come here for years, but I didn't really know where it was when looking around on State Street (it faces Roosevelt, fyi), and I always ended up at the Village Faire for Vinaka anyway. I finally made a point to head over, after I found out that a good friend, who was not a coffee-drinker five years ago when I met him, likes this particular brand so much that he is going to serve it at his family's coffee shop that he is opening soon. I did my usual double-fisting and tried the espresso shot and macchiato. Both had perfect cremas, were smooth, fruity and slightly tart. While waiting for my cups, I started reading the tasting notes on the bags displayed in the window. Guadalupe caught my eye (caramel, peach skin, sugar and honey). I am very excited for my morning brew tomorrow! Overall, I would come back more often, but they close before I even get off work. I'll make a point to stop by for more beans soon though! This is now one of my favorite coffee shops in the San Diego area! I love the ambience and the spacious, minimal feeling when walking into the shop. I ordered the rosemary latte and the PSL, which surprisingly isn't a pumpkin spice latte but a pancake syrup latte. It wad perfectly not too sweet and i love the sea salt sprinkled on it as well. The rosemary latte was good but it wasn't my favorite rosemary latte that I've tried - I actually prefer the one at Jaunt. Service was also great as I asked through the menu. My family and I popped over to Steady State Roasting for cup of coffee while we waited for our reservation at Shore House. The coffee spot is not directly on the main road but is very close to all those shops and eateries. The coffee we ordered was tasty (iced PSL, Rosemary, and vanilla lattes) but drink sizes felt small. It held us over until we were able to eat and we also picked up bags of beans to try another time.
