For the two days I was in DC back in November I visited this Starbucks both mornings and I just want to say they have the most friendliest staff. Ok truly this should be a 3.5 rating. This Starbucks rates for the imaginary point 5 additional star because of the upstairs portion. Unalike the hustle and bustle of downstairs, the upper room is where you can saddle in and get a quiet piece of mind. The temperature is okay, I recommend bringing a sweater. The staff here is always super friendly. At this location you can expect to see a good deed or two. I've been numerous times and most often I've encountered someone buying someone else a cup of joe. So the folks here have a warm heart or at least are generous enough to extend two dollars toward a perfect stranger. read more

This place is proof that the Hill needs another Starbucks (perhaps on the "Senate side"). These guys get slammed in the morning and late afternoon. And when that occurs, get ready for missing drink orders or poorly made beverages. The pasties are good (but then again they are the same across town). I wish this place was cleaner. I have a circuit of Starbucks that I hit on a routine basis and this one is always dirty. Also, there is a regular group of homeless who loiter out front asking for pocket-change or yelling at customers through a bull-horn. This Starbucks appears to abide by the motto "Service Schmervice." Exhibits the consistency of Starbucks coffee but it is one of those locations where some of the people don't know what's going on. I had to use the restroom but the doors were locked and no one could locate the key. They found the manager to open the door and I ended up finding the key in the restroom. They also upgraded my coffee for free. So they are nice and everything, and it isn't their job to keep track of keys but it was inconvenient. There shouldn't be a need for a key. read more

Worst Starbucks experience I've ever had. I asked for cream and sugar (super easy, right?) and they did not add that to my coffee and then were difficult when I asked where my coffee was. I just got one of the new caramel crunch soy frappuchinos here, and it is soooo good! Wow! Best frappuchino flavor. But more relevant to this specific Starbucks: the 3 staff members working when I arrived were ALL very friendly and helpful! I asked some questions about the drink because it was my first time hearing of it, and they answered patiently and double-checked to make sure their answers were right. I placed a mobile order and arrived within the estimated timeframe. It took THIRTEEN minutes for our drinks to be made from the time I placed the order. There was no need for us to wait that long, especially on a Sunday afternoon with only 2 other people waiting ahead of us. The barista was too busy socializing with a customer who arrived after we got there. This is the slowest Starbucks I have ever been to. The employees could use a little more customer service training considering the baristas barely acknowledged the customers when serving the drinks. read more

This is the best Starbucks I have found in D.C. The service is pretty good. Depending on who you get- it can be better or worse. The coffee, as most people say, is burnt. It usually taste burnt- with cream you can sometimes compensate that. However, their espresso drinks are amazing. They also have a great upstairs area that almost always has seats available and is a nice quiet reading or studying area. This is what makes it the best in the city. The decor is great but it's the upstairs that gets the four stars. A fireplace, a quiet upstairs, and a decent espresso drink are what make this place worth a visit. read more

In full disclosure, I'm not a Starbucks fan but I was running to a meeting and this was the closest coffee option around. After 15 minutes in line watching the inefficient processes behind the counter, I remembered why I don't like Starbucks. Coffee is bitter, people aren't friendly, and there is never any seating. I come here with my "squad" once every week. The staff is super nice, they actually care about their job (unlike the Starbucks staff on 8th street). The drinks are great and the make their own whipped cream (the Starbucks on 8th street is always out of whipped cream). Great place with lots of space to work. read more

Upon arriving to the facility I had asked the associate Kristen if she was able to give me 2 cups of ice. She explained to me that I had to wait in the long curving line for the ice I wanted. Another associate approaches me and I ask him for the cups of ice. He proceeds to service me and Kristen starts yelling at him asking him why was he helping me if she clearly told me to wait in line. She pushes him and he drops the cup of ice all over the counter. She then starts throwing ice across the room aiming to hit the associate but missed and it got into the space occupied by customers. Kristen is not someone who should be representing the brand. There needs to be more professionalism in the workplace. read more

I don't know why I'm reviewing a Starbucks. They are all pretty much the same and you know what to expect. This one has nice seating and is across the street from the Library of Congress (back corner). Watch out for vagrants outside, but the area isn't the worst. Google provides free wi-fi. read more

I go to my neighborhood local Starbucks before I head off to the gym, since 2003. The oldest employees have the worst customer service ever. I come in everyday to get coffee and BRENDA ask me and other customers "what's your name again." No, I do not expect you to remember our names, but learn some customer service! How about, what name would you like on your cup when your drink is ready or may we call your name when your drink is ready. NOT WHAT"S YOUR NAME AGAIN! YOU NEVER ASKED THE FIRST TIME! BELIEVE IT OR NOT SHE IS ONE THE OLDEST EMPLOYEES BY AGE AND SERVICE." I will call customer service as well, but she needs to be retrained on what the customer service lines should be. The Manager obviously has a challenge in managing his employees. Therefore, he should tape the customer service lines to the cash register for individuals who do not have customer service capacity. Unfortunately,she might look down at the customer service lines and say which one should I SAY AGAIN!!!! read more

All four of the visits I've made here have been disappointing, which is unfortunate because it is a reserve store. They take forever to make your drinks because they a) don't put them in order on the bar (they just put them all in a disorganized pile essentially), and b) at any one point, they do not have enough people working on the bar and if there are two, instead of putting one on hot bar and one on cold bar, they both work on the same area. They also seem to struggle (or perhaps just refuse) to make things to standard. For instance, the first time I visited, they did not make my London Fog to standard. This same visit, the bathroom was absolutely horrendous. Unfortunately, since it takes so long for drinks to finally make it to the customers' hands, I didn't have time to wait for them to remake it. They also all tend to crowd around the register area instead of making drinks. My visit today was the most irritating I've had. It took over ten minutes to get my grande iced chai because they were too busy making drinks on the house for one of their friends. Four drinks on the house, all very specific and unique. These drinks apparently took the expertise of both people on bar to properly execute. One of those drinks that they were giving to their friend was essentially an iced passion tea crossed with the acai refresher. After making this drink (that wasn't paid for and that was "ordered" after most people in line, including my friend and I), both people on bar turn around and inform us that there is no passion tea left for my friend's drink. Because they had just used it all for their friend. My friend then asked for white tea. They were out of that too. Since I'm a former barista, I asked them if they could just make some more tea for her because the day was still young and it most likely wouldn't go to waste. They said that wasn't an option because they were allegedly completely out. (I should also mention that they were using the color coded lid meant for passion tea for black tea instead.) As a former Starbucks barista, this store is an embarrassment. Nothing is to standard. Orders take forever. The baristas have terrible attitudes. Paying customers don't seem to matter. And the workspace would also not pass a proper inspection. As the location closest to Capitol Hill (and as a Starbucks in general), this is all unacceptable. read more

The only nice staff are management and shift supervisors, though don't you dare try and get what you want and actually paid for because the barista who is making it for you will either shoot you a dirty glance or make your drink completely wrong again. read more

As a doctoral student, I cannot choose a better starbucks to spend my time at. I live at this starbucks. The location is as good as it gets, and their facilities are unmatched. They have an entire upper level that's quieter, clean, and dedicated to quiet people who need to work on their laptops or study, with the perfect internet connection. They have plenty of tables and plugs, everywhere. Their view is beautiful. Their furniture is comfortable. I mean, I love this place. Furthermore, almost all the baristas are incredible. They are so kind and helpful, and will treat you as a regular and a friend if you go there enough. However, there is one barista named Kristen (sp?) who is a disaster. She yells at customers, consistently denies them their rights (e.g.: free refills on brewed coffee if you're a green or gold card holder), and publicly scolds customers (with everyone in line wondering why the customer is being talked to in that manner). I am honestly wondering how she's not fired. I understand not wanting to deny someone their livelihood, especially if the employee is showing signs of growth and a desire to excel and please customers (which in no way, shape, or form is the case with Kristen). I also understand not wanting the surrounding community to consistently be hurt, embarrassed, and angered by an uncontrollable, rude, arrogant worker. There is a tension, but discernment and wisdom need to be exercised, and the manager is not showing that he/she is exercising this skill as long as this girl continues to work there without being trained to change. If it weren't for her, this starbucks could easily get some national award. Because of her, many people actively avoid this starbucks. I really hope someone realizes that action is overdue. read more

Overall excellent EXCEPT one staffer -- the individual young woman who makes the drinks: excellent drink maker, very poor, dissatisfactory customer manners -- extremely unpleasant to deal with. As is the usual complaint about this woman (heard from many others)...I requested a coffee frapp with whipped cream mixed in the drink and on top. 95% of the time...the request is not "understood" and thus, no mixed whipped cream. This morning, 6/6/07, I asked if the order was mixed according to request. The response from this young lady was crude, unnecessary, defensive, and down-right un-customer friendly. I simply asked because 95% of the time it is never 'right.' The lady was antagonistic, got a real angry attitude and showed it and rebuked me.... This, I found out is the general state of her reaction to all of her customers. I'm told she normally lies about the way the drink is made, and friends of mine usually are given the wrong drink....even though she says it is correct. Needless to say, when she's behind the bar mixing drinks, my friends and I will opt out of buying there and go to Murky's and get our coffee. We suggest she be given customer service training, really fast or this establishment will lose a lot more customers. Everyone's talking about it! The store is fine, her service is not! A definite 0ne star or less. read more
