Great location with a beautiful sunset view. The food was just ok. Portion sizes are very small. My favorite was the steamed buns but even those were more bun and very little meat. The host at the front called us 15 minutes after our reservation time then was rude and clearly annoyed when we took 30 seconds to quickly finish our conversation with other patrons. Dining at Star Noodle was hands down one the best dining experience we had while on Maui! The dishes are meant to be shared, which allowed us to try a larger variety. Of course they really highlighted their various noodle dishes which were each unique and stand-out in their own right. Everything was prepared perfectly. Always very busy. Reservation is a must. Servers are attentive and knowledgeable about the food. Ambiance is great with high ceilings, good lighting, and has limited outdoor seating. We've been to star noodle twice and tried a variety of dishes. Ramen was very good. Noodles were cooked just right, broth was flavorful. Everything else was good but does not warrant waiting a long time for a table if you don't have reservations. I felt it was more hype than anything. If you can get a reservation, then definitely go. Respectfully I didn't really understand the hype. The food and drinks are good, but it ultimately felt pretty standard to me. I was excited to to try this place since Sheldon Simeon was the chef who helped create the menu and I love his food that he produces. This experience felt like they got popular and they knew it and they didn't have to continue to innovate. The prices are to be expected but I wish the flavors and menu were a little more imaginative. The decor inside it nice and I love that everything is kept clear and feeling brand new, but I think this place was a one and done for me. I visited a few days ago, and it was extremely windy. Even though we had a reservation, we still had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. When we were finally seated, they placed us in an area of the restaurant that was heavily exposed to the wind. At that point, it really should have been closed off, as the conditions made it uncomfortable to dine there. Our food arrived quickly, which was appreciated, but several ingredients listed on the menu were missing from our dishes. Given the conditions, we ended up eating quickly and leaving. If it's a windy day and customers have reservations, it would make more sense to seat them in a more protected area. We weren't the only ones--several other guests in that section were also asking to be moved. Overall, I'd recommend avoiding this place when it's windy. It's frustrating to have to put down a card for a reservation, only to be seated in poor conditions with little accommodation or concern from staff. I basically never write reviews but I felt passionate about this one. This restaurant is way overhyped and is most definitely NOT the caliber of restaurant to be requiring your credit card info for a reservation. Overall, the food was mediocre at best if you live somewhere with decent asian food. This business would not survive in the Bay Area. We ordered the steamed pork buns, chicken wings, and Shanghai noodles. The buns came out lukewarm (not hot - zero steam when we opened the steamer) and the quality was that of a decent grocery store. The chicken was the best dish we got. They had a good fry and solid flavor. The Shanghai noodles really lost us. This "Asian fusion" dish really lacked cohesion in both flavor and texture. It was hard to eat. The cherry on top was that it came with exactly 2 pieces of shrimp but tons of chicken. Our server came by and kept asking "Everything is so good right?" which just left us wincing and saying "Yeah..." A lot of the negative reviews are saying this place used to be much better. We have tried a few places on the island and they were disappointing. We got this recommendation from another couple on a snorkel tour and I'm so glad we asked them. We came the same day they told us about it. Everything was so good. We got the Asian short ribs, the miso butterfish, and the star udon noodle. I inhaled the butter fish. It was perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned and melts in your mouth. The udon noodles were fresh and the broth was so good, I drank the rest of it from the bowl and it wasn't even my dish! The Asian short ribs was super tender and was perfect with the sauce and pickled onions. We were planning on coming back Sunday but our air bnb is 40 mins away without traffic and over 1 hour plus with traffic. We shall see. Definitely at least go once. It was worth the trip! read more

We also ordered the star kimchee and it had way too much vinegar. It was sadly tough to eat. The drinks looked tasty but were very expensive so we only ordered beer. The views from the deck seating area were amazing, clear views of the ocean, and there's a little grassy patch at the back of the restaurant that made for great photos. The food was not bad. Coming from SF, the garlic noodles were fun, and I liked their addition of the crispy fried garlic. The pohole salad (fern) had a refreshing texture. Our favorite dish was the hot n sour because the soup had the most interesting flavor combo. They also accidentally gave us some free kimchee due to a mix up, which was very nice of them, but unfortunately the kimchee was also our least favorite dish (sorry). It was a bit too salty, and I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a fermented kimchi or something closer to geotjeori. The texture of the cabbage was soft and it seemed to miss some umami. We were fortunate to get a reservation for the same evening at 715 pm and requested an ocean view. This restaurant is ocean front, sunsets are cool to watch. Charity was our server and she was awesome- checked on us frequently and filled our water glasses without asking. Plates are shareable, so I suggest ordering a few. We ordered: Tempura shrimp- ordered 3 piece, can also order 4 Large shrimp, lightly battered and fried. Delicious! Steamed pork buns- ordered 3 piece, can also order 4 Sweet soft buns filled with thick cut pork belly and veggies. Excellent! My personal fave was the Singapore noodles. We finished it with the Japanese pannacotta dessert, which was pleasantly topped with arare crunches. Delicious. We also had a bottle of sparkling sake, which wasn't too sweet, and had those refreshing bubbles. And of course, we had the calamansi cooler 2.0, along with the tamarind mocktail. We were seated on lanai, and enjoyed the sound of the waves crashing as our tastes buds crashed into the delicious share plates. I truly don't get the hype. The server pushed the garlic noodles as the "#1 dish." They showed up at our table in about 2 minutes, which makes sense because they tasted like half-cooked noodles tossed in a Top Ramen seasoning packet... for $18. We love coming here anytime we're in Maui. It's guaranteed good fresh locally sourced food. We like to try new things on the menu but defenitly count in ordering the pork buns, garlic noodles, wings, and ramen. The husband and kid add a seafood dish or two. The butter fish is their favorite. Sometimes we are unable to score reservations even weeks in advanced so we brave the wait and try walk up seating. Came to Star Noodle for dinner and we were lucky to catch an amazing sunset too! We had reservations and were seated right away at a nice table at the edge of the restaurant overlooking the beach. Our server was so friendly and recommended a great bottle of sake to enjoy with our food. We got the miso cod, bacon and eggs, garlic noodles, Lahaina fried soup, pad thai, and the singapore noodles. The miso cod was super delicious, so buttery and flaky with a sweet and savory miso glaze on top. The bacon and eggs came out sizzling, and the pork belly was really good with the onions, tomatoes, and the soft boiled egg mixed throughout. The hot plate added a nice smoky flavor and crisped up the rich pork belly pieces. The noodles were average and all leaned on the salty side. I would skip the garlic noodles next time for sure, the ones I can get at home are much more to my taste since I prefer thicker noodles. The fried soup rice noodle rolls were stir fried, but I found them to be too mushy and overcooked. Singapore noodles were pretty good but needed more curry flavor and some spice. We ended with their malasadas, which came with sauces and crushed peanuts. It was a good way to round out the meal. I think if you don't eat Asian food often, you'll like the noodle dishes. For me, the noodles were nothing special here. Definitely a solid spot for a relaxed dinner with sunset views, but I preferred the appetizers. We wanted to try Star Noodles Maui to break from a straight few days of sushi and poke. We had reservations at 8:15PM, arrived and checked in at 7:50PM, and were seated by 8:30PM. Inside the restaurant, there were fans going full speed above us. I can see those fans are useful during the day when it's hot out, but by the time we sat down there was a breeze outside and the fans were not necessary and made it almost uncomfortably cold. The restaurant was busy even at late dinner time. When we walked in, the bar seating was full and tables around us were all full with other guests. We read through the menu before ordering and were excited to try everything. The cocktails were good. The oolong tea based cocktail and mocktails were the best of all the drinks. The chicken wings appetizers were really good, the miso butterfish was ok and the garlic noodles were very fragrant but it was bland. The rest of the dishes were fine, nothing spectacular. The Lahaina fried soup was like the fried flour cakes at noodle houses in the Bay Area. It had to be one of the best dishes that could enjoyed alone. We were able to secure an online reservation well in advance and had it marked in our calendar. Once we arrive in the islands, we started to have second thoughts. Did we really want to do noodles? Should w try something else? As is typical for our trips, we decided to pivot and cancel our reservations and seek something else. But then we reconsidered. Maybe we did want to try Star. We pored over the Yelp pictures and reviews and we enticed by the options. So we rebooked! And then my wife started feeling off. Editors note: my wife has some dietary restrictions and sometimes during a trip the aggregate of the variety of food we sample can create a situation where simple fare becomes necessary. So we cancelled. Another day passed and we were again drawn into the orbit of Star. Maybe there would be something simple that would be suitable for her stomach. The broths of the soups sounded interesting. But did they have garlic? Could the chef accommodate something more bland? So we rebooked. And this time we stay committed. We had an early seating and we only had to wait a few moments before we were escorted to our table. Unfortunately, the one two-top which was available placed us directly in the line of the setting sun - between the two drop down shades. We asked if perhaps they could reposition us to a nearby four-top, hoping against hope that they would despite the crowds. And lo and behold they did! So we began perusing the menu (even though we had it effectively memorized thanks to Yelp). When my wife inquired about the dietary restriction options the waited played the best card I've seen on a whole. He brought a binder to the table which clearly and concisely outlined all the ingredients in each dish and my wife was quickly able to identify the best option for her. I, having no restrictions, guiltily was able to choose whichever dish so tickled my fancy. My wife chose an udon noodle soup and tailored it to her needs by selecting some of the ingredient. I decided to try the miso butterfish and the Singapore noodles Let me revert to the short review above: star noodle is phenomenal Flavors were perfect. Portions were properly sized and the service was on point. My wife was raving about her soup (dashi broth based) and that alone made for a special evening and a terrific meal Star Noodle lived up to its reputation. We've tried to make reservations each time we came but always missed it so we tried our luck with walk in and the food gods were on our side. We ordered one dish from each category to ensure that we tried as much as we could. Overall, the fusion food was fine. I think with our experience with other hand pulled/made noodles our expectations were different. I have to say the food was ok. It didn't blow our minds but it was great to experience it. We ordered their singapore noodles and garlic noodles along with their famous pork buns. Their pork buns were melting in your mouth bursting with flavors in every bite. Their garlic noodles and singapore noodles were both fantastic and had flavor in every bite. They have a hot sauce on their table that just elevates the flavors of any dish and is not as vinegary. For drinks, we ordered their pineapple guava cocktail and it was delish. For dessert we ordered the Hawaiian version of beignets and loved the chocolate sauce, caramel sauce and peanut. Unfortunately, the flavors fell flat and tasted similar to something I could make at home... The udon basically tasted like something from a pre-made set. The Lahaina fried soup were supposed to be similar to the fat chow funn were kinda soggy and not crispy. Not what I expected from such a popular spot. That said, the ambience is lovely and the view is absolutely spectacular, which definitely adds to the dining experience.
