Stanbury is a definite place to try in Raleigh. Food as outstanding and a fun experience for families who appreciate different plates and varies ingredients. Service was outstanding while waiting for a table and at the table- attentive, cordial, informed. Ambiance is definitely weird, with bizarre decor and over the top Xmas decorations, but fun to appreciate - probably an extension of the eclectic menu experience. Drinks were very varied and well executed. Not a five star on the wait time for a Tuesday night as it's impossible to make a reservation... not bad wait, but they certainly can manage better as we saw larger parties arriving later and getting seated earlier. Ambiance is probably for younger foodie crowd, but it is what it is. overall 5 star and can't wait to com back with the rest of the crew. read more

This is likely one of my top Raleigh restaurants so far! We don't like that they don't take reservations here but since it's just the 2 of us it's not terrible. We do like that while you wait for a table you can sit down outside and order drinks and select small bites. Stanbury is a small restaurant with a unique eccentric charm. The menu is constantly changing but always has fixed staples. I check their IG for their latest menu offerings. The vibe is ultra low key-casual but the food is sophisticated. You will find menu items like bone marrow and beef tongue or classics like oysters, pasta, steak and fish. Whatever you order it's probably going to be great. I won't say every single dish here I've had here has been a hit but the misses are rare and doesn't stop me from returning. If all this sounds good to you, then you're definitely missing out. The only thing I can find to complain about is: it's hard to get a table. The interior looks like a Wisconsin fish lodge. The whole vibe they give off is as low-key as it comes. They frickin' serve 40 oz. Miller High Life like champagne service. The food they turn out is as good as I have had anywhere in the world. On two visits we had: * Chicken liver mousse zomg, the best I have ever had. So light and airy. * oysters * steak 2 different ways * perfect pork chop * Green bean salad * Char siu quail * Crispy fried pig's head (not the whole head) * Some bone marrow thing * Canadian sausage with buckwheat pancakes * Szechuan ice cream - weird but amazing The service is like the rest of the restaurant - looks breezy, but it executes at a very high level. Unless you get there even earlier than we did, you will wait a little bit at one of the front tables. Great cocktails if you don't get that Miller High Life bottle service. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Stanbury! For dinner we ordered the tuna crudo, scallops, sweet potato agnolotti, tagliatelle, and pork cheeks. For cocktails we ordered a spritz, practical magic (my fav!), girl from ipanema, and midtown down. For dessert we ordered the apple crisp! It is rare to go to a restaurant and find ALL the food delicious, but Stanbury did it! I personally do not like tuna but their tuna crudo was perfect. The scallops were crispy but not over cooked, just the perfect texture! The Agnolotti was perfectly sweet and buttery! The tagliatelle, just wow! Mind blowing delicious! The pork cheeks were served in soy sauce so if you do not like soy sauce, do not order it, but the cheeks were super tender and full of flavor. I recommend having a glass of water next to you when eating the pork cheeks to taste the rich flavor of the cheeks! The service was fabulous and top notch! I don't know if I would have found this place, if not for some friends who gave me a gift certificate for my birthday. And, man, I am so glad that they did! The ratings for this place are already high and I am only going to add to the rave reviews. We had the fresh oysters, one large plate, and two other small plates, which was more than enough for two people. I especially recommend the quail and the tagliatelle. We also had mixed drinks, which were perfect. The atmosphere is also really relaxed and easy going. They do not take reservations, so get there early, if possible. Rustic but eclectic aesthetic with a WILDLY unique menu! We made it a point to come for my partner's birthday because we'd heard that Stanbury is a staple in Raleigh. We got on the waitlist (no reservations are accepted) and got seated in their waiting area where we ordered a quick snack and cocktails. Our server was really nice and super attentive in the beginning of the meal but he seemed to get pretty busy at the end so we waited for longer than we would've liked to be able to pay and leave. Love their menu style and the variety of small plates! There are some really unassuming items and pairings so we decided to be adventurous. Sounds silly but the bread & butter and the charred broccoli were the best things we had all night, even though everything else was really good too! These were simple but super well done. Cocktails were all VERY good. And even though I love desserts and am very easy to please when it comes to them, I could recommend skipping dessert and just getting another cocktail or dessert wine. Hoping to try the menu as they switch is up but it's worth a visit if you're not in a rush. read more

This was a real hidden gem that most of my friends in Raleigh haven't heard about. It's very hip, and I found it very hard to find a menu online. Decided for one of my final outings in town for the Christmas break, we'd treat ourselves. Didn't have any trouble with a wait, but we grabbed last table inside. Looked like there was a wait once 530 hit. Decided to check out this place. We started with an appetizer, Brussel sprouts with tikka massala and ghee spice mixed in. Very good and something I'll get the fiancé to make for us at home. Little pricey at $11 for a plate of Brussel sprouts, but I enjoyed it. For main meal, I ordered the NC Striped Bass. It's brandade, braised fennel, bread crumb, gribiche, and fennel salad. Cooked perfectly and very filling. At $31, I was happy with what I was getting. My friend ordered the smoked pork chop, and I liked it even more. It came with mole negro, kabocha, habanero onions, radish, cilantro, queso cincho I'm definitely going to come back here. Best random Yelp find ever! Have a few unexpected (and unpleasant) days in Raleigh and have been wanting to treat myself in the evenings. Stanbury was the PERFECT spot for this. Super funky and cool space- someone clearly has a quirky sense of humor! Delicious and inventive cocktails topped a thoughtful and reasonably priced wine and beer list. I started with the sweetbread yakitori, which was absolute perfection- the sweetbreads were firm but not dry, with a delicious grilled flavor that was complemented beautifully by the Kewpie mayo and grilled scallions on the side. I moved on to the crispy pork head, which was just so rich, so deeply flavored, and so delicious that I was really tempted to order a second round. But...my basket of house made bread and delicious cultured butter kept calling, and I kept answering. I can't wait to go back to Stanbury! read more

Dining at Stanbury is an event, and it is a special one at that. The entire staff from the second you arrive makes you feel like a part of the family whether you're a regular or a first time visitor. Cory and Kate behind the bar are rockstars. Get there early and do whatever you can to be at the bar in order to get great service there and have an awesome view of the open kitchen. Tapas is the way to go here. Stars of the show include Crispy Pig Head, Octopus Tostada, NC Bigeye Crudo, and Fried Oysters. You also really should also get the Bone Marrow and do the shot with bourbon. Again, Kate and Cory will tell you how it's done. This is an experience you won't have anywhere else. We've been meaning to get to Stanbury for years, and made a special detour on our way back to Ohio. Absolutely 100% worth the detour. We are counting down the days of getting back to the restaurant. One of the best restaurants in the country. And I don't say that lightly. I've been coming here since 2013 and it's even better since it now has more seating outdoors. Oysters were fantastic (both raw and fried). Pigs head was delicious. I had a tequila drink (forgot the name) but that was fantastic too. Arrived exactly at 5 PM on a rainy Friday night as they were opening and there was already a line queued up. We were seated at the end of the first group of diners. at about 5:20pm. Ordered a really cool gin cocktail, can't remember the name, my wife had a Prosecco spritzer. The food was ridiculously delicious. We ordered small plates, four of them, and they brought them out one at a time. We had a main waiter, and she was great, but we were also served by about four other people who seemed very attentive and very relaxed. I'm typically an impatient person but I enjoy a slower rhythm when I'm out at a restaurant. There was no rushing around, the dining area was medium sized and all of the servers, chefs, bartenders etc.. were in a kind of collaborative, chill groove. The rhythm was slow but prompt and deliberative. It was really pleasant and everybody who served us was friendly. The vibe of the place and the decorating and the spaces and the bar.... They've created a really relaxing and pleasant ambience. Not stuffy at all. There was a guy sitting at the bar in a pinstriped suit and then there were people showing up in very casual attire. If I can make a a musical analogy... Grateful Dead meets the Dave Brubeck Five meets the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Relaxed, sophisticated virtuosity. It was a great show. Oh my!!!! All I can say is deeeelicious!!! The taste to calorie ratio is very high for this restaurant. My taste buds are still alive the day after. Everything was amazing. Everything!!! Came at 5:30pm and waited 70 mins to be seated. They don't take reservations. First come first serve. But so worth it. We got a seat at the waiting area, had a drink and a small appetizer, or you can hang next door at the chocolate shop to pass the time. What is this cuisine? I am not sure, nor was the chef. He wasn't worried about labeling it when I asked. But I am calling it Fusion American. With today's amalgamation of 100s of cultures embedded in America, it is clear this chef's adventurous spirit is into the study of these varied cuisines... et viola...creation anew - blending and extrapolating into new and tasty dishes. He seems to be of the generation that follows the Yottam Ottolenghi philosophy. His fusion, however, is of our much broader set of cuisines vs. just Mediterranean/middle eastern...resulting in an exquisite new journey in each plate. The prices are extremely reasonable. Mixed drinks are delicious. Atmosphere is very dark and could use an upgrade. Recommend outside seating if you are claustrophobic. Beware as it is very very noisy/loud indoors...but your so busy eating, who has time to talk? This place has gone straight to the top as my favorites to frequent. Finally FINALLY got to try Stanbury this week! I've heard so many people rave about this place, and it's clear why. You definitely want to make reservations - we went at 7:45 on a Wednesday and it was packed. We sat in kind of an awkward corner booth, but it worked out great once we sat down. It did take a beat for our server to take our drink order, but again it was really busy and the awkward table thing. I got some sort of tequila lemonade drink - it was amazing! So good I had to have another. They have a few draft beers and a good selection of wine as well. We decided to go with a few small plates and eat tapas-style. The kitchen did an awesome job spacing everything out the dishes so we could eat them one at a time. The tartare came out first..some of the best I've ever had! Perfect with the crispy chips. Then on to some of the most perfectly seared scallops I've ever tasted. The shawarma was so tender and seasoned really well. Last but certainly not least, the marrow - I had heard from so many people that this was their favorite dish and now it's one of mine. The bread with the marrow and the salad and the sea salt - the perfect bite! The chocolates from next door with the check are a really nice touch. My wife and I came for dinner on a Saturday, and we had to sit at the bar because all the tables were reserved. Which was kind of weird, because during our entire time at the bar (about 45 minutes), there were definitely tables that never had people seated in them. I don't want to assume too much, but from my observation, they may have had a table or two to spare. Anyways, the food was good. I ordered the lamb chops, and they were cooked to perfection. Medium rare and juicy on the inside, with a great sear on the outside. No toughness in the meat, and great flavors as well. It came over a bed of beans and had a tomato-based sauce over top of it. All of it was really good, and I would get it again in a heartbeat. My wife tried the seared scallops, and the scallops were tender and juicy, not overcooked at all. It came over some parsnip puree and had a hint of grapefruit as well. Also a tasty dish, and worth getting if you enjoy scallops. Eating at the bar was a bit cozy, to say the least - so unless you're there just for drinks, I'd recommend trying to make a reservation for a table. It'll probably make for a slightly better dining experience. The space is a bit small. The service was nice and quick, and parking wasn't really an issue, as they have a small parking lot, and we were able to find street parking. Overall, a good experience. Some of the best food we have ever eaten and we have eaten all over the world! The menu was eclectic and delightful and apparently it changes every day. We stopped in for a quick bite on the way home from the airport and we let the friendly, helpful server know that we were in a bit of a hurry because we had a long drive ahead of us and would take the dishes in whatever order they came out. Really, the request was a little rude for such fine dining but she was happy to oblige and brought them out one at a time with just enough wait time between each dish. We ordered two "small plates" the first of which was a fish pate and the second a steak tartare. Both were out of this world. The sauces that came with them, the bread, the mustard?! Holy smokes! Absolutely beautiful presentation and flavor. The steak tartare was rich, of course, and we don't know where the beef came from but I don't think it was Walmart! Seemed "locally sourced" to me. Amazing freshness and flavor and terrific, unique seasoning. Generous portions. Our third plate was a shared "large plate" of striped bass. Again a perfectly scrumptious sauce and grains that it sat on and the fish itself was seared to perfection. Slightly crispy on the outside, flakey and moist inside. Chunks of fresh beets in a nicely dressed watercress salad, fresh and tasty. The entire dish was a masterpiece of complementary flavors and could not have been more ideal! This funny little place appears to be an old tavern. It is loud, funky, and fabulous. It is expensive but worth every penny. Seriously. We went on a Tuesday night at around 7:30 PM and it was absolutely packed to overflowing. Could barely find a place to park, but we were seated immediately and the service was exceptional. Apparently this gem has been discovered! Oh! Almost forgot the bathrooms. No paper towels, and no nasty air blowing. Where are six stars when you need them? My second dining experience (oh yes, experience) nudged me to review. First, make a reservation - this seems critical, especially for a Friday night. This place is gaining popularity and for many a good reason. The service is great! For a "fancy" food experience, the feel is more relaxed as the decor is a darker, eclectic mix of taxidermy animals, ceramic antique figures, miniatures, and I think I saw some Star Wars memorabilia. Somehow it works! Even with the comfortable feel, the service is impeccable, very polished and kind. I've sat at a reserved table and this last visit had to sit with my group of four at the bar (lack of reservation, but it ended up being fun) and we were just as well taken care of. Food - get small plates! You'll want to taste as much as possible. It's a changing menu; our group got Burrata cheese garnished with a mixed salad and pickled onions, the Crispy Pigs Head, an amazing sliced steak with a citrusy goodness that I can't recall the name, and drumroll...my first taste of bone marrow. Meat butter. That's what it is. Full bar, beer, wine and specialty cocktails. I love a good cocktail and had the Ricky Bobby (Scotch based) and The Grapes of Wrath, pretty and tasty. For a delicious meal, prices are not bad at about $8-13 per small plate. I would say it's more special occasion, but I'd go for a regular dinner and maybe scale back just a bit from what we got as both visits were for anniversaries. They do a nice job here. We've only eaten outside when the weather is good. Inside is fairly loud and less pleasant. We were well taken care of and everything was delicious. It's so good and all they care about is really good food done really well without a pretentious setting. There is bar seating but I highly recommend getting a reservation as it's a pretty small restaurant and extremely popular. I chose to go on an extremely cold night. The wait was about an Hour (no reservations allowed) they basically said wait here (outside freezing) or in your car and come back in about 45 mins. We chose the car, we were sat within 10 mins of walking back up. I do think due to the limited seating Reservations should happen. The service, our service was nice and efficient but she lacked personality. She was very "matter of fact" like. I would have just preferred service with a smile but she got the job done. Now for the food. The Bread & Butter was nasty. It tasted like burnt popcorn, I told my server so and she took not back but didn't remove it from my bill even though I only ate one piece. I got the fried oysters as an appetizer which were good, my friend got their Rabbit which she said was good but I didn't try it. The Ribeye was great. It was a little overcooked for my Medium order but the charred Onion paired so well with it I didn't complain. Would I go back? Yes.. in a warmer month. All in all, 3 out of 5. read more

On this most recent visit Mom and I decided to celebrate my birth by splitting the below: NC Softshell Crab- amazing plus a beautiful presentation, definitely one of the more popular dishes of the night Cavatelli- this dish grew on me as I continued to take bites of it, the ingredients worked well together Gambas Al Ajillo- best dish of the night, highly recommend this shrimp dish Grilled Ribeye- not worth the price, the ribeye was cooked perfectly but I was not a fan of the dish overall. I did not like the charred onion and think that it could have benefited from another element, perhaps chimichurri. As far as drinks go they have draft beer, wine and cocktails.
