The steaks are the star here. The sides we ordered were "a miss" . The steaks, which are served a la carte were prepared perfectly. Most often, I leave a steak house thinking I could make a better steak for a fraction of the price at home. This was not the case here. The service was also good, which is a nice change for the area. We live here and quite frankly, the service in the Anchorage area is usually pretty marginal. So, that was a pleasant surprise. However, the sides are quite expensive and billed as "family style" but they are a single serving really. The exception was the Parker House rolls which I think came out 5 to an order. They were pulled apart and the sides of the rolls were dry, as if they had been plated up and set under a heat lamp for too long. The risotto was prepared incorrectly. It was mushy with no hint of the classic al dente. I think if they can't take the time to cook that dish correctly, they should consider taking it off the menu as it is a marker for a good meal in my opinion. The wedge salad was pretty standard fare, with a couple of heirloom tomato slices that were also mushy (although, I can forgive that given where we live as the lettuce was crisp and nice) The other side we ordered was a special, fiddlehead ferns, served braised. They were tasty, and the best non steak item we had, but a small portion and, I think $23, which seemed quite expensive. I think the next time we go, we will just share a steak with a glass of wine and skip the overpriced 15-25 side dishes. read more

I wanted to try Stalk for a while, but I rarely drive to Eagle River. I did an online reservation, and the manager called to ask if a seat at the bar was acceptable. I agreed and arrived promptly at 5:00. Several people were ready to enter when the 'open' sign lit up. The restaurant is small, with high industrial ceilings and dark walls. It was nicely furnished with white tablecloths and cloth napkins. The seat at the bar was fine, and the manager mentioned that there were hooks under the rail for our bags. A nice touch! We were there for appetizers and ordered a glass of wine and a rhubarb seltzer first. For food, we ordered the Parker House rolls (out of curiosity to see what a $9 roll tastes like), mac and cheese, tempura shrimp, and the whipped goat cheese and pepper jelly. The rolls arrived first, a small plate of four glistening rolls. I am a pretty good baker, so I may be critical. The rolls were warm, with a buttered top and a sprinkle of salt flakes. The flavor was okay, but I didn't enjoy the overly salted dough. I asked for more butter, but the flavor was disappointing. It seemed rancid. I didn't finish the one I tried. I imagine others might enjoy them... The mac and cheese was delicious! Arriving in a hot metal dish, with a nice bread crumb topping. The cheese was plentiful, and the warm, cheesy dish was ample! The whipped goat cheese and pepper jelly was reminiscent of my Mom's 1970's cream cheese and Pickapeppa Sauce party dish. The items that made the dish delicious were the champagne-dressed arugula and sliced tart apples. The small slices of bread spread with the goat cheese, topped with arugula and sliced apples, gave a creamy, spicy, crunchy, slightly bitter bite! The best dish was the crispy tempura shrimp. They were medium-sized shrimp with a very light, crisp batter! They were tossed in an Asian-inspired chili aioli. They arrived hot and delicious! It was a large serving for an appetizer! My only challenge that I knew that reheating them would be impossible, so we left some behind! The wine list is beautiful, and they offer a nice selection of reds and whites by the glass. I was able to taste a couple before selecting a Malbec. A bonus for my non-drinking friends was the large selection of mocktails, non-alcoholic sours and spritzers, low ABV cocktails for light drinkers, frontier sodas, and coffee drinks professionally made! I looked around the restaurant and saw beautifully cooked steaks! Rare looked rare, and medium was the exact shade of pink I prefer! I will return for a steak soon! This was a long awaited dining experience! I had heard all good things about this restaurant and I can confirm everything I heard was true! A beautiful space tucked into a strip mall in Eagle River, who knew??!! From the front door entry experience to the departure we were greeted and taken care of the entire time. The staff were so friendly and helpful- want to call out Jersey our waiter extraordinaire. He thoroughly and thoughtfully explained and recommended items from the menu including the wine menu. The man knows his stuff! We had the Caesar salad and the lobster bisque and the Parker rolls. Highly recommend all. Everything was so delicious and on point. Again - hard to believe you were in Eagle River! The filets were cooked to perfection I had the Maytag blue cheese crisp adder to mine and my friend had the bearnaise sauce both were amazing. First off, it is nice to have a place in Eagle River that has a sit down atmosphere with white table clothes and good wait service. But, as far as the food, it does not provide the quality of steak or sides for the price charged. We had what was described as a 25 oz. Dry Aged New York Steak at a price of $169.00 for the cut. It actually was a T-Bone which a large portion of the cut was bone and not actually good quality meat. Also, we ordered it as medium rare and it came prepared closer to medium well. We try to eat quality steak meals weekly, but are not sure this will be a place we frequent again. We have had much better experiences with food at Sullivans in Anchorage and will not mind the short drive from Eagle River for a better meal. read more

We drove out from Anchorage to have dinner with friends, and Stalk Steakhouse absolutely exceeded our expectations. It rivals any fine dining restaurant in Anchorage in every way--from the quality of the food and creative flavors to the thoughtfully curated menu and excellent cocktails. Our table shared three different appetizers, and every one of them was outstanding. For dinner, I had the steak with the blue cheese crust, and it was cooked perfectly with incredible flavor. We also ordered three different sides, and each was just as impressive as the entrées. What really elevated the experience was the service. Our waitstaff was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly without ever making us feel rushed. They struck the perfect balance--checking in when needed while giving us plenty of time to relax and enjoy the evening with our friends. So to make a proper review, I think I'm going to break down my review into three parts: (1) ambiance, (2) food, (3) drinks Ambiance: Stalk Steakhouse is a very fancy, upscale restaurant. The restaurant prioritizes a calm and welcoming environment. Darker lighting inside, comfy seating, and modern. If you're looking for a sit down restaurant, something more in the intimate and romantic night, this is the place to be. Very clean and fairly new too. Food: the food is amazing. Very fresh, very delicious and very filling (for us) lol. The menu is broken down to the kind of meat you want, and what sides you want. My recommendation is to trust the servers' recommendations. Especially if it's your first time. They have the inside scoop on the types of meats you might be wanting, depending on how it was aged. Overall food was incredible Drinks: this has to be my favorite part. The drinks and the bartenders overall were impressive. My husband and I just wanted to try a different assortment of drinks and the bartenders were great in recommending certain drinks for certain dishes. First, I want to say how wonderful Brian was. He maintained an upbeat attitude, clearly explained how the menu worked, and did an exceptional job throughout the evening. The aura of the restaurant was intimate and calm. Upon arrival, the music was low and relaxing, setting the perfect tone. After about an hour, the music was turned up slightly--not too loud--allowing everyone to continue enjoying their own conversations. It was definitely a night filled with many celebrated birthdays. Solid steak house! Reservations were made and our table was ready and reserved for our arrival. Immediately seated. Im not sure I've had such a great experience in any restaurant. The hostess even laid our napkins over our laps! ALL staff gave amazing service! Very welcoming and thanked us for our visit. Caesar salad was fresh crisp and dressed well - good portion! Served with In house croutons with a Parmesan crostini an awesome addition. Filet mignon had perfect flavor not overly seasoned perfect sear. Broccolini grilled perfect great flavor and loved seeing the garlic chips on top. Banana foster crème brûlée we ordered to-go so will need to update the review but looks promising. Interesting place! We made reservations a week in advance. I was called 3 times during the week to confirm my reservation ??? Not sure why so many calls. At any rate the restaurant is located in a strip mall . Small intimate setting with a view of the parking lot. The food is ala carte even the condiments. I had the Halibut which was under cooked and my husband had the ribeye. His steak looked kinda lonely on the plate ( potatoes were an additional $18) but he said it was cooked perfectly. My fish went back into the kitchen and eventually came back. The flavor was good. I had two glasses of wine my husband had lemonade. Our waiter Joe was excellent he felt bad about the halibut and comped us a cheesecake. The wait service here was top notch. However the pricing was a little out of line. I could see if I was sitting on top of a mountain or on a beach. But the location IMO doesn't merit the pricing. Final bill was $ 250ish and we left Joe a $60 gratuity...this place needs to focus on the portion size , charging for sides and abandon charging for things like Horse radish. read more

People often ask why I leave reviews, and it's experiences like this that remind me why I do it--and how much I love it! Finding the perfect restaurant in Alaska has been a challenge. To me, the best restaurants are 50% amazing food and drinks and 50% atmosphere--a place so calm and relaxing it feels like the world stops when you're on a date. Until last night, I hadn't found one that checked both boxes, though Crush and Whiskey & Ramen come close. That changed when I went to Stock Steakhouse for the first time. My date suggested it, and I quickly realized word-of-mouth is why this place keeps growing. They opened seven months ago, first operating a day or two a week, and have since expanded into a fully booked restaurant. Now, every table is filled, and I imagine reservations are tough on weekends or holidays. Their website is visually appealing, easy to navigate, and lets you learn about Chef Aaron and make a reservation through a simple online form. At 11 AM, I booked a 7 PM dinner reservation, which can be tricky--for example, Whiskey & Ramen doesn't allow same-day reservations. I wasn't sure if it would go through, but within 30 minutes, Stock personally called to welcome me, ask about the occasion, and confirm the time. When I arrived at 7:30 PM, it was peak dinner rush, and several couples were waiting. If you don't have a reservation, you'll be lucky to grab a bar seat. I recommend planning ahead. The host greeted me warmly, and though my date hadn't arrived yet, I said I'd wait. Within minutes, Chef Aaron himself greeted me and made sure I was taken care of--where else does a chef do that? I'm a bit old-fashioned and classy, so when I saw an old-fashioned reserved sign at my table, it hit the spot. The wine menu was diverse, featuring a great selection of grapes and regions. They also had a cocktail menu and other options, but this is the kind of place where you hope your date enjoys red wine--the atmosphere is all about sharing a decanter. They offer bottles from $50 to several hundred dollars, plus wine by the glass for variety. The service was impeccable--patient, attentive, and let us enjoy the evening at a relaxed pace. We started with the goat cheese and pepper jelly appetizer, which was fantastic. The portion was generous, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. When you layer the goat cheese, bread, pepper jelly, arugula, and apple, you get the perfect bite--especially paired with a nice red wine. One thing to note--Stock's website does not list prices, which always makes me a little wary. It could mean anything from a $60 steak to $125+. I prefer transparency but was willing to take the risk. We ordered a filet mignon and lobster mac & cheese, which was listed at market price. I estimated $30-$50. While waiting, the waiter kept our wine glasses full and checked in regularly. Chef Aaron even stopped by again. These small but meaningful touches, along with calm lighting, cozy atmosphere, and great music, make Stock stand out from other high-end restaurants in Anchorage. When the steak arrived, it was cooked to perfection--soft, juicy, and packed with flavor. Hands down, the best steak I've had in Alaska! I've yet to try Double Musky in Girdwood, which I hear is another top contender, but for now, Stock holds the trophy for me. The lobster mac & cheese was also outstanding--light, flavorful, and felt handcrafted rather than mass-produced. It far exceeded the version at 49th State Brewing. Just when I thought the meal couldn't get better, the waiter asked, "Would you like a crème brûlée with two spoons?" How do you say no to that? Even though I'm not a big dessert person, the crème brûlée was incredible. A beautifully torched top with caramelized bananas cracked open to reveal a rich, creamy inside--absolutely heavenly. At the start of this review, I said the best restaurants are 50% food and 50% atmosphere--Stock delivers on both. Not once did I feel like we were just another table to be rushed out. Every moment--from the reservation process to the personal service, ambiance, food, and drinks--made this an exceptional experience. I highly recommend Stock as a top-tier date night spot for special occasions. That said, be prepared--this is not a cheap dinner. A conservative meal runs $200-$300, and if you add multiple wine bottles, you can easily hit $500+. But if you're looking for the perfect date night in Anchorage, Stock Steakhouse is worth every penny. read more

Snagged a reservation for four at this highly anticipated steakhouse! We took a once over the menu before arriving and already knew we were in for a treat. I am not much of a steak eater but my company was, so of course they all got delicious cuts while I struck gold with their halibut. It was cooked to perfection and the sides were great accompaniments. Now on to the steaks through the taste buds of my friends. Everyone finished their plates, wiped clean and nothing but "this was amazing!" coming from their mouths. Of course I tried a bite and yes, the non-steak-eater has to admit it was pretty darn good. The sides were fantastic and so were our apps. We got the meatballs and tempura shrimp to start. We shared the lobster Mac, mushrooms and carrots on the side. All wonderfully portioned for us 4... we honestly could have just stick with two sides! Our waiter was fantastic. So friendly and accommodating. First let me say my server/Bartender was great. I Had really high hopes for this place. However I cannot in good conscious recommend it. As a person who has owned several restaurants, one of the 1st things you learn in the Kitchen is "Taste the food" In all seriousness I've had better Steak and Mashed potatoes at freaking Golden Coral. If you do decide to throw your money into a fireplace and eat here there is a couple things you need to know. 1. Be sure to ask for Salt and Pepper and bring any other seasoning you my like on your meal, because place doesn't season a damn thing unless you call Butter a seasoning. 2. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES get the mushroom demiglace not only do you only get 5 small pieces of crimini mushrooms, but the demiglace is over reduced, bitter and possibly scorched. OH AND ITS FREAKING $30 LITERALLY ALMOST HALF THE COST OF THE ENTIRE STEAK. 3. Don't get the whipped potatoes, its probably good they are served with a spoon because if you tried to eat them with a fork, you will not get any in your mouth...They are that runny. 4. We came here for my husband's birthday with reservations after just moving into town and had high hopes based on the reviews. Unfortunately the experience was disappointing. When we arrived we waited at the front desk for five solid minutes while staff seemed unsure we were there Or where to put us. When we were finally seated we were put right next to a very drafty front door -- not a great start for a special night. The one bright spot was the sommelier, who gave us a thoughtful wine list and a great suggestion. Service was uneven after that. Our server was clearly still in training and didn't check on us for several minutes; by the time we could place our order we were almost through a glass of wine. My husband ordered his steak rare but it arrived closer to medium rare. I ordered the lobster bisque and it was extremely salty, with no noticeable lobster -- it looked and tasted more like butternut squash soup. Costco's lobster bisque out does whatever this was. I returned it because it was inedible; the owner stopped by and offered that I could "come back and try it again," but did not offer to remake, comp, or otherwise address our meal that night. For the prices they charge, the level of service and food quality we received felt unacceptable. We expected more for a special occasion and will not be returning. I hope management addresses staff training, seating choices, and kitchen quality control. read more

I took my mom here for her birthday with some friends and we enjoyed it! They did a great job with the design, it's really beautiful inside. I got a blood orange sangria that I loved and 2 appetizers to start - the stuffed mushrooms and the whipped goat cheese + pepper jelly. The cheese plate was great. Our server brought out more crackers without us having to ask. I'm not a fan of mushrooms so I can't comment on those. For my main, I ordered the filet and it was delicious. Cooked perfectly. My friends got the meatballs which were really good too. We also ordered the whipped potatoes and the fingerling potatoes. The fingerling potatoes were small/round shaped and looked like baby potatoes instead. I assumed they ran out of fingerling potatoes but the server didn't say anything, so I'm not sure. I thought they were ok, but a bit dry. The whipped potatoes were great. For dessert we tried both the bananas foster crème brûlée and the orange olive oil cake. I thought the cake was good but the crème brûlée was amazing! My only advice is they need to calm down with asking to refill waters every 5 minutes. Multiple people walk around the room refilling waters, so even if you tell one person you don't need more water, another person will be along shortly asking if you want more. I completely understand not letting peoples glasses get empty but they must have asked us 10 times if we wanted more water, even after saying no. My friend said, "I have never been so hydrated in my life." Lol It was a bit much. I think it would be better to refill without asking. If the person doesn't drink it, that takes away the need to ask repeatedly. That's not a knock on the waitstaff at all, just a suggestion. Everyone was so friendly and our server was lovely. Where do I start? This restaurant was the reason I made a yelp account. My husband and I checked out their website which said "Dining at Stalk is a sensory journey--a deep, instinctual connection to the power and pleasure of fine dining. This primal connection to food, drink, and atmosphere sets Stalk apart, creating a dining experience that is as bold and instinctual as it is refined and elegant." Here's the thing- if you are going to sell yourself as a unique place to go have a steak, then you need to own it when the guests arrive. This was in no way a "sensory journey". Instead, it was a run of the mill millennial-grey overpriced steakhouse that touts having a sommelier, but they never make an appearance after requesting the wine list(let me add this restaurant only serves beer and wine ). The sommelier was there, and spotted several times wandering around. To say the food is salty is an understatement. It was like licking the underside of a fishing boat. The only thing that did not have an obscene amount of salt in it was the scallop appetizer. The steaks were mid. For $70 each, they were nothing to write home about. The peppercorn sauce had the consistency of jello instant pudding and the au jus was again, way way too salty. The risotto was gluey, salty, and just plain depressing. Don't bother ordering the creme brulee, it is soft to the point of almost being watery. As for the service, the waiter was indifferent and had a vibe of not really wanting to be there. As the night wound down, the head chef meandered over and introduced himself to every remaining table except ours. He chatted up all the other customers including the couple at the bar. My husband made a comment to me that maybe they just don't like Native Alaskans(as he was the only one in the restaurant), and I certainly hope that in the current year this is not the case. Oh and the booths are shoved way too close to their tables. It's uncomfortable and weird. I don't have a photo of any of the food because this was supposed to be a "screen free" experience. This is an honest vegetarian review! I know, weird for a vegetarian to eat at a steakhouse- but I had been hearing great things and of course wouldn't miss an opportunity to try bananas foster crème brûlée! For an appetizer, I got the whipped goat cheese and pepper jelly with arugula. It was quite fantastic! The arugula was dressed beautifully and all flavors complimented one another well. We got the lavender berry lemonade and the Mai tai, which were gorgeous and very very tasty! For the main course, I didn't order an entree, but instead got a few sides to try. The whipped potatoes were so creamy and savory, and the rolls were wonderfully salted and buttery. The Mac and cheese was quite good, but I would have liked a thicker sauce! The risotto was a true letdown out of everything- very very flavorless (and the most expensive of the sides we got!) to a point it couldn't even be saved with salt and pepper. The dessert was so so good, just as I had hoped! The bananas foster crème brûlée had an outstanding creaminess and was not overwhelmingly sweet, and the flavor was very rich and delightful! The olive oil orange had an artistic presentation and the homemade whipped cream was to die for! We of course didn't finish everything, and our server boxed it all up for us and even wrote what was inside each takeout box on the outside! Been waiting for this! We haven't had a good dinner place in Eagle River since Haute Quarter Grill left. I knew this would be expensive but having an option for good food out weighs that to me. They did a great job remodeling. It's dark, moody, romantic, and I love it. Right off the bat it feels they are creating an "experience" rather than just another meal. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the wine and the food, also had a great personality. We ordered the shrimp tempura which was fantastic. The stuffed mushrooms were good, but seemed like they were missing a depth in flavor for me. The steaks were amazing, truly amazing. The mashed potatoes lacked a creaminess and seemed almost watery. This evening was our first experience with Stalk, and we were quite pleased. At 530PM on a Wednesday, and with no reservation, we were seated promptly with a choice of table, booth, or bar; We chose booth, the last available and right at the kitchen exit to the dining room--which was actually fun, as we could ogle all of the various dishes coming out to see what the food actually looked like--all of it well plated and appealing. Although in the busiest area of the place, there was no more than a low hum of activity, and overall the lighting, decor, and comfort of the spacious booth were excellent. Once seated, we were greeted promptly by a VERY pleasant server, given water, and offered suggestions about the current fare with an explanation about the differences between wet and dry-aged beef. I had a medium-rare wet-aged ribeye, she a well-done New York with a lobster tail. Mine? Just about perfect. Hers? It's the first time I have EVER heard her send special thanks to the chef for how well it was prepared and how flavorful it was. That's SPECIAL. The lobster? Maybe a minute shy of perfectly cooked, and she had to fight to get it out of its shell. We had a side of mashed potatoes, which were good, but there is NEVER enough garlic and butter, is there? For afters, I had Bananas Foster creme brulee;, which would've been just as good without the 'banana' part; She had the olive oil cake, and she found it 'spectacular.' Excellent decor, great music, friendly staff with one lady that came to them after the closing of the Marx Brothers. She by the way remembered the wine I used to like at Marx Brothers. I said I would give them another chance and last week I did. As before, the staff is amazing! They were attentive and very knowledgeable. The food....had the NY Strip and it was perfect!! Everything from the temperature to the seasoning was spot on and beyond flavorful! Had the morels in a Demi-glaze that I could have just drank! I don't typically like anything on my steak but this was off the charts!!! So glad I gave them another chance, they really nailed it! read more
