I go here all the time. It's way better and cheaper than the grocery store for most items. They have an awesome sausage selection- lots of weird varieties. They even have a case with some exotic meats as well. In the Anchorage area when all factors are taken into consideration, this is the best butcher. There haven't been a lot of recent reviews on this place and I've been going here for several years. Initially, I thought it was amazing. Great service and quality meats, albeit a little bit expensive. The last few times that I have been in however, I have been greeted by surly employees. I don't even know if I would call it greeted, rather acknowledged that somebody walked in the door. You almost feel as if you're bothering them or irritating them that you're there. I have noticed a difference in the quality of meats, even the prime meats. I don't know if Covid just had a major hit on this place but at one time, it felt like a mom and pop shop and you were happy to give business to this local place. Now it just feels like the only option close by that's really expensive with bad customer service. I'm giving it a three star just because of the history but my last two visits would rate this a 1 star. Hopefully this is just a bad season for them and things start to get better. Always attitude when I go in to store or on phone, retail people always act like they are put out if you ask questions. It's a shame and a real put off when you spend top dollar on what is an excellent cut and have to deal with attitude. Not sure if they are burned out or just used to treating people poorly because the have a monopoly on the area. read more

I got two Filet mignon here and the quality was beautiful. Of course it was pricey. But it's filet mignon so it makes sense.

I purchased a large package of mixed beef, pork, chicken, and it came with some mixed vegetables. The meat has been such low quality; near un-edible. Over $1000.00 and the dogs have eaten more than the family has. The bacon has bones. The beef and pork taste horrible and are mostly fat. We will NEVER buy from Mike's again. Paid almost 400.00 for a beef box bush order after trying a few other places. These guys offer a larger box for less but don't let that fool you. *Another butcher not only wrapped our meat so we can see what we purchased in both foam and vacuum bags but had our order delivered in less than 24 hours. Mike's was one layer of freezer paper. I ordered from Mike's on a Wednesday and our order didn't ship until the following Friday. The meat was spoiled and when I called to report it I was treated as an annoyance, yelled at, than hung up on. I smell lingered for a long time, bits of meat were on the outside of the packages and it had excess blood as if it was never ever cleaned. We returned the order and heard nothing! Two weeks later I still did not get a call or any notice about my refund. Several calls to this butcher went unanswered.I ended up calling my bank to get this addressed. Luckily I saved all my paperwork/recording including the shipping info. Again I have tried other area butchers and want to save you the trouble. I would prefer to give a - minus on this deal. I called all around looking for hog tongue and snout. They told me they did have some, so I drove in from Houston to purchase some for tacos. They wrapped it for me at the store and when I got home and opened the package it was all freezer burnt. I could not use it nor would I feed it to my dog! I called as soon as I got home to complain and I was told to call back when the owner was in, so I called back another day. Same gal answered the phone and told me that if I wanted a refund I had to bring the bad product back. I did tell her originally I came in from Houston. All they had to do is look in the box they opened rite in front of me and gave me a small portion out of. The rest of that shit would be in the same shape. Do not buy frozen ground beef from them! I bought some frozen ground beef 2 weeks ago, and when it was thawed, I immediately saw chunks of fat, vein pieces and other stuff that didn't look good at all. It all went to trash. read more

Custom cut meats and hand crafted sausages are the thing here. Nice folks prepare fresh meats to order. The pork chops look amazing, so next time we'll buy some. We got Pork sausage, carne asana, prime rib too. Its' kind of a long drive from south Anchorage, and worth it. read more

I am surprised by the consistent 5 star reviews. I had given up on Mike's Meats years ago when I bought ground beef from them. I thought I was getting a deal and superior meat (compared to the grocery store). The water quantity when cooked was so significant it turned me away from them. Fast forward to 2012. I visited the shop and purchased their bacon and a fillet mignon. The shop was definitely clean, the employees were very nice. Young guys. I had the fillet that night with a piece of the bacon wrapped around it. The fillet was not outstanding as a butcher's cut typically is and the bacon tasted off, almost like fuel. I would rate the fillet mignon a step up from the flash frozen, perfect circle fillets you can buy at Costco for 1/2 the price. We cooked the bacon and had it for breakfast as a family. Yes, the bacon definitely has an odd, almost chemical flavor. It makes me wonder about their curing process. Meh, what can you expect for $3.99/#? I noticed a Chateaubriand in their case for a very reasonable price (sorry, I've forgotten the price now) and I inquired about the cut. The kid said it was from the sirloin. Curious, that cut is supposed to be from the tenderloin. This butcher is certainly not an outstanding, go-to place. Too bad. read more

After being consistently frustrated with the quality of grocery store meat, I started purchasing from Mike's Quality Meats. Having never before been to a butcher's, the array was a little intimidating at first. However, I have since been impressed by the affordability, freshness, and quality of their selections. The staff is very nice. Sometimes I ask for 1 lb of ground beef packaged into separately into halves, and they don't give me a hard time about it. Highly recommend! read more

I'm probably going to make the effort to check out other butcher shops. I've been pleased with mikes until last month. They have some prepared foods and dips. If you go here to buy them, don't get rushed. Check the quality of the food before you make the purpose. I've been sold a container of artichoke dip tat was rancid. I thought I'd buy one of the large stuffed mushrooms, they looked pretty fresh. Instead of the fresh one, I was given a leaky, past its prime one. Hands down the best ground beef I've ever had. You can also ask for the frozen 1lb packages, much easier than taking it home and packaging it yourself and it's the same delicious meat! ALSO, the ground beef is way cheaper than the organic gb at Fred's or Carrs, which is what we normally get. I live in South Anchorage and I go out of my way to go to Mikes. We drove all the way from Palmer and were really excited going to Mike's quality meats for the first time. The staff was friendly and service was quick even though everyone was there trying to get meat for Christmas. My husband had been studying for weeks so he could prepare the perfect ham for Christmas. We called ahead of time to make sure they had what we needed before making the trip all the way there. When we got there, we asked for a boneless, unsmoked, uncooked ham. They showed us a cut and my husband asked if it was the same thing he asked for because it didn't look the same. We were assured that it was indeed a ham. Well. My husband was right-- it wasn't what he asked for. It was a roast, not a ham. So, the ham(the only thing my father in law requested fir Christmas) didn't get to happen. Bought ground beef early yesterday morning. Smelled bad when cooking and tasted bad threw all of it out after wasting time cooking it 2.5 pounds. Was just disgusting. Not sure what was in it but ruined the meal had to skip it completely it was that bad. Will not go back the quality has dropped to zero. read more

Went to Mike's for the first time today to see if they sold: caul fat and beef long ribs. They did not have the caul fat but we could order it for pick up at a later date. I was very surprised that not only did they have the beef long ribs, but they also were not the prepackaged frozen kind found at the store (or other butcher shops). I have been looking for a local source of these ribs since flying them in is expensive and there is not much meat on the frozen kind. These were very meaty and will do nicely. I ended up buying some ribeye steaks and pork chops for dinner tonight. What a difference from the store bought meat. The entire family loved it. It was very busy in the store and the staff was friendly and attentive. They answered questions even though busy and gave personal attention to each customer. What I really liked is that if the staff member didn't know the answer, I was told so and then asked if he could go find out (by asking someone else). He could have made something up. Even though it was very busy each customer's experience was about 5-10 mins start to finish. Overall, I am very impressed and will return. read more

The quality is reliably better than anything you can find at Carrs, Fred Meyer, etc. and so is the price. Lots of house-made dips that are also tasty. I think folks that have had meat go bad don't really understand what their buying. This is not the preservative overloaded product you find at large grocery stores. Eat it or freeze it. read more

Its been several years and not sure if its the same owner...I remember the original Mike's Quality Meats in the late 80's he sold the business to someone else and if its the second owner which it may not be I just want to warn hunters that they ripped me off 100lbs of prime spike moose from a December hunt they used to have the ground meat they gave me was gray freezer burned old meat they cleaned out there freezer and dumped it on me, I stopped in there a couple of month ago and there was a sign that said not taking game meat? I also had a coworker who got ripped off his caribou. Now this has been since early 2000 so this is just a warning you work hard for your game meat be careful, When I confronted the owner about the inedible meat he said (well it happens some times) If its not the same guy? you can go for it for me never again. When I stopped recently the place stunk....smelled bad! I would not buy anything from them. Once again I want to thank Yelp for giving me a chance to voice my experience with the ones who stuck it to me...now if its a new owner I apologize but it is what it is you buy the name and the history.
