Came here for dinner on a Wednesday night as a party of 3 from the Hotel del Coronado. I'd considered making a reservation since they have OpenTable integration, but figured a Wednesday without any big conference events nearby wouldn't warrant for one. Turns out I was right -- plenty of open seating. This is primarily a steakhouse and the steak delivers (hence the name), but I was a bit disappointed in some of the seafood offerings, which I guess shouldn't be that surprising given what the place is known for. We originally planned to do happy hour at the bar before dinner, but there was only seating for 2 between the parties already there. Rather than ask someone to move, we decided to just grab a table instead -- but by the time we walked back to the front, the two hosts had disappeared for about 5 minutes and a waitress had to come seat us. Here's how everything ranked: Wild Mexican Shrimp Cocktail -- 2/5. The shrimp didn't have much flavor and I would've preferred a horseradish-based cocktail sauce over the aioli and smoked jalapeño. Mini Lobster Rolls -- 5/5. I'm not usually a lobster fan but these were good! A tad dry but it's only like 2 bites so it didn't bother me. Saltspring Island Mussels -- 5/5. Great broth and bread. Wished they'd served this earlier so we could've enjoyed it with the complimentary bread. Caesar Salad -- 3/5. Dressing was a bit off. King Crab Fried Rice -- 0/5. Would've been nice if they listed whatever that sauce was in the ingredients because we wouldn't have ordered it. Let it go to waste. Mixed Mushrooms -- 5/5. Woodfired Asparagus -- 4/5. Nothing special but solid. 22 oz Dry-Aged Ribeye -- 4/5. Great salt cap sear but some bits were burnt -- I only know because when I ate them they disintegrated and tasted like ash ~~Parking: It's at the Hotel del Coronado so there's hotel parking available. Plan accordingly for hotel parking rates. ~~Service: Good aside from the hiccup trying to get seated after we decided not to do happy hour at the bar. The two hosts at the front disappeared for about 5 minutes and a waitress had to step in. Once we were seated though, everything was smooth. ~~Coolest Part: They let each person choose their own steak knife from a collection sourced from all around the world. Such a fun touch. ~~Worst Part: The King Crab Fried Rice, hands down. I took one bite and couldn't even swallow -- I was not expecting the flavor profile to be sour and tart. I've had forbidden rice before since it's common in Asian cuisine, but the sauce on this was just not it. ~~Tips: Stick to what they're known for -- the steak, mushrooms, and mussels are all excellent. We wanted to try a new place and I saw that they had a Monday special (porterhouse special for 2) so we made a reservation and had a good time. We did not end up ordering the special but will come back and try it. It is located off of orange and it is on the second floor. Decor was nice, the staff were friendly and our waiter was knowledgeable. They give you an amuse bouche which was a cucumber slice with some sort of tuna on top. Very good. They also provide different types of bread and butters. We ended up ordering the following: Crab cake- really nice with lump crab and not a lot of "filling" which was great. It's the kind of dessert that makes you pause mid-conversation and do that quiet "okay... wow." Service deserves its own paragraph. Huge disappointment for our anniversary dinner. Don't get me wrong it's a lovely atmosphere and the service was good. But in absolutely no way is this place worth the money. I ordered Alaskan king crab legs for market price ($135) and I received the tiniest 1 & 1/2 crab legs I've ever seen. They were not Alaskan king crab size, they had hardly any meat in them what so ever. I don't mind paying more for good food but this experience was pitiful. If I ran this restaurant I would be embarrassed. I get we are in Coronado, so there's an island price markup to be expected but this felt like pure robbery. Yesterday (Valentine's Day) we came to Stake, we've been here once before but after this experience Never ever again. It was a set menu for 165.00 per person, before I made the reservations I called and made sure about the same menu that was online and she said that was the menu for sure and it was assured everything on it would be available. Well to start we got seated in such a Horrible place I was facing the kitchen and the door every min was opening and closing and the smell was awful and it was freezing. I went to the host and asked to see if there was another table and when they moved us to the other side there was SIX tables that were empty, so why would you seat us at such a awful table! Then the server comes after 20 min finally takes our drinks and they come out they were awful. Then we finally tried to order and half the menu was "not available" our reservations were for 8:00pm. And he said no rib eye, no soup, no ahi tuna, no seared Japanese A5, no nothing So I sucked it up and said nothing and ordered what was available from the small menu. I was absolutely pissed cause I came for the ribeye. The steaks were supposed to come out with mashed potatoes and candied rainbow carrots. EVEN THE CARROTS they ran out of! Like what the heck kind of scam was this! Running out of carrots when you clearly know how many reservations you have is crazy and unacceptable. They gave me a tasteless burn steak with these NASTY dried potatoes and TWO limp asparagus! It was awful I have a picture! I put my fork into the mashed potatoes just to see and you'll see in the picture. What it was it was this dirt textured can't even call them potatoes. It was disgusting. I had one bite and almost choked on it cause it was so awful. I didnt eat the steak and we walked out of there paying 450.00$ for Two people completely unsatisfied, and hungry. The steak was severely overcooked, completely dry and burnt. For the price, this was unacceptable. I expect a chef to understand basic doneness levels. I would be embarrassed as a chef to send this out, I'm not sure how this left the kitchen. The steak was burnt to the point of being black on the outside and dry throughout. This level of overcooking is hard to overlook. I don't even understand the level of embarrassment I would be if I was a chef to send out a horrible, sad plate like that. So to sum it up not only I won't come but I'll make sure to put it on my social media all the pics I have of the food I received at Stake. This restaurant had the trifecta of perfection. Great food, service and ambience. It started with them coming to pick us up at the hotel to bring us to the restaurant. We had a very nice driver and it just made everything so much easier. The waiter was very knowledgeable and made recommendations based on what we what we were looking for. Gave a great wine recommendation based on the region and the type of wine we like. We ended up with a great Pinot Noir that none of us had ever tried before. The food came out, hot and delicious. The whole experience was very enjoyable and memorable. I eat at a lot of steakhouses and I was impressed that they bring out a box of different signature knives to use with your steak and explained where they're from and what type of steak to use them on . We were a table of four and no one left disappointed we were all totally impressed. Too bad the restaurant is on the other side of the country but if you're on Coronado Island, this is a must! read more

Everything we ordered was excellent: kids Mac and cheese, bread, oysters with good mignonette, crab cake, mushrooms, skirt steak and NY strip. Sauce flight was alright, nothing to write home about, but you need some sauce... I really truly enjoyed the steak, as is, salt/pepper. decor was beautiful, our server Paige was excellent and personable, same with our busser! Stake in Coronado definitely knows what it's doing when it comes to food. We went for the Wagyu tasting platter and--no surprise--it was exceptional. Every bite was a little love letter from the cow itself. Staff was great, food was great, happy hour martinis were very great (maybe too great). But let's talk about the bar area. The main dining room is gorgeous--low-lit, modern, classy. The bar? Kind of feels like it missed the design memo. It was super bright, both doors flung open like we were throwing a block party, and the side bar under the window was doing its best impression of a dirty-dishes art installation. It could really use a quick remodel (or at least a wipe-down and a dimmer switch). Bottom line: Go for the steak, the service, and those martinis. Just maybe have them bring your drink to the dining room. read more

The American Wagyu Eye Of Rib, Filet Mignon, and Taste Of Wagyu were tremendous, as were the side dishes (Woodfired Asparagus and Potato Gratin). Our starter, the King Crab Cake, was astounding. The bread service was generous and highly satisfying, and the cocktails and wine service were terrific. We ended with Mootime Creamery Ice Cream (along with a superb 20-year Tawny Port wine. No photos as we were with a crowd. Excellent service from a waiter. He was warm, friendly and had a good sense of humor. Oysters at $1.50 a pop is great and Tuesdays are the days for that here. Also, the mussels with Spanish chorizo in an excellent wine broth (great dunking fare) are worth a stop. The mussels are of the smaller size, which I prefer. Faves are PEIs. Not sure if these were from there. Martinis and other cocktails were excellently prepared and presented. We will be back on another Tuesday. read more

We headed to Stake Chophouse and Bar this past Monday to try their date night menu and it was such a fantastic experience. The place itself is gorgeous and chic with a really great vibe. Right from the start, the host was super welcoming, which is always a nice touch. Our server Brian was an absolute delight! He was so engaging and knowledgeable, and he honestly made the night feel special. We added the lobster roll to our prefix menu and it was divine. The porterhouse and sides were also incredible--we left so happy and full. Make sure you save room for dessert because the crème brûlée and carrot cake were both so good. The GM Jenny even stopped by to say hi and she was lovely. It's clear they really care about their guests. All in all it was a wonderful night and I can't wait to come back and sit by the fire on their patio! read more

The service was topnotch and the food was exquisite from the 14oz Australian grade 9 Wagyu to the porterhouse which we highly recommend. I wasn't going to write a review for here, but as I sit on the toilet at 1am, and again at 4am I felt it necessary Most pretentious overpriced whiskey and wine list I have seen in some time, insane markups. I know restaurants need to make money, but $200 for a pour of Elmer T Lee, laughable. Started with French onion soup, onions were crunchy, broth had no depth, cheese was low grade bland and melted on top, but no crunch. I had better French onion soup on Mt last carnival cruise. Dinner got the wagyu rib cap, and some broccoli cheese side dish Rib cap lacked flavor, underseasoned, and barely any fat content for wagyu, totally underwhelming. I asked for med rare, came out rare, I like rare steak so I just ate it. The broccoli side was a monstrosity, it didn't look pleasant, kind of like some crazy creation at a sizzler. The cheese sauce tasted like a Velveeta base, and was just not great, I ate 2 bites. Pretentious pick your steak knife was ok, kind of gimmicky. Service was good, and I had a nice Manhattan so that gets the 2nd star. read more

Our family has been visiting Coronado Island (Hotel Del) for a long time and every summer we make sure to come to Stake. The food here is absolutely mouthwatering and the service is incredible, specifically Jeremy is amazing. He recognizes us every year and provides amazing service ensuring that we're always taken care of and even giving us complimentary shortbread cookies. There was so much meat that was delicious, but my favorite meal of the trip were the Guerro Nero Bay Scallops, I wish I had the recipe it was sooo good. We came back twice, during our week long stay here. The second time we were able to be in the private dining room which was more secluded, less noisy and overall a better ambiance. If you ever have the opportunity to come here, please do, it's most definitely worth it! read more

We ordered happy hour white wine but were charged about $26/glass for the white wine which was uncalled for since we specifically said we will have the happy hour white wine. We came here for Sunday happy hour and while what we paid for happy hour prices was probably more than I would have paid for dinner elsewhere, we have to keep in mind this is a steak house in Coronado with a rooftop patio and view. We ordered various small plate items from the Happy Hour menu and I do have to say the mussels were simply to die for! The garlic wine sauce it came with was so good that I simply drank the sauce when I ran out of bread to soak it up. I would come back just for those mussels and would probably order 4 orders of it next time. The waygu skewers and ahi sliders were good but not extraordinarily so. I think my least favorite was the oysters ($3/oyster during HH) which I found to be kind of small (I've had $1 happy hour oysters elsewhere that were way larger than these). Fresh air, great view and excellent service. The drinks were so good and the food was AMAZING! I didn't get a picture of a couple things, but OMG the Stake Fries are a must. Last September I spent a weekend at Hotel Del Coronado with my in-laws & had a nice dinner at Steak Chophouse & Bar. It was walking distance from our hotel. At 7:12pm we still weren't seated and the guests were still there. So my sister-in-law asked if we can at least have a drink while we wait. We each ordered a cocktail while we waited & around 7:30pm we were finally seated. Due to our 30 minute wait we were offered complimentary bubbly Our server was Adam very detailed oriented with quite the knowledge on steaks and knives to choose from. He was attentive and was able to answer all of our questions. One of us preferred well done and he was able to recommend a steak well (8oz Wagyu Rib Cap). No complaints on service. We were well taken care of despite the table delay. Great experience with excellent customer service, but be prepared to spend a good amount of money. Our bill was about $1,500 for 4 people, including several cocktails (which were great!) Comp bread was delicious, especially the pretzel rolls. I've never had butter with olive oil and it worked so perfectly. Surf&turf appetizer was better than I expected and the thin rice cracker it came with complemented it so well. Wagyu Rib Cap, I requested medium rare but it was more rare than I wanted. When I sent it back and it returned, it was so perfect! Wild Mexican prawns add-on (3 pcs) was cooked well, had lots of flavor, and were large in size. The chimichurri sauce was tangy with lots of flavor, which was perfect with my steak. Lobster mashed Yukon gold potatoes were good but nothing amazing. Broccoli was underwhelming but the garlic chips on top were good. The description on the menu definitely made it sound a lot better than it actually was. Wood fired oysters Rockefeller weren't memorable, I forgot we even ordered them until I reviewed the menu to help me write this review. Caesar salads were basic with nice, large pieces of anchovy, but overall, nothing special. Oysters were just okay, some were not shucked the best. For dessert, we shared the millionaire peanut candy bar (which we called a fancy snickers bar) and it was mediocre, I took a few bites and was done with it. Wine, Dine, Super fine! After experiencing Stake, otherwise known to the common man as "Stockay", I feel like the A5 wagyu, beer filled, massaged, and fatty beef monster that I was born to be. Aiden was a delightful young man that gave us the most in depth and thoughtful recommendations for what to devour. The ambience of the bright, hot fire reflected beautifully off of his DIAMOND earrings. He reminds me of my sweet dear grandson. As far as the food goes, my Zebra knife sliced quickly and swiftly through the meat which then melted in my mouth. I can't speak highly enough about the food and Chef Nicks ability to bring food back to life with flavor and style. I told the hostess I looked on open table and there were plenty of time slots open and she argued that open table doesn't always sync with their server and they were fully booked until 7:15. We settled for a low top table in the corner. Our server Brian was fantastic, attentive and knowledgeable. The food was great, but I'm not sure if we would come back for a special occasion unless they get a porterhouse on the menu. We will definitely come back to enjoy the happy hour menu and lively environment on the patio like we've done before. Something about sitting in a bar area eating a $100+ steak just doesn't sit right with me. When we left at 7 pm there were 2 tables sat in the main dining area.
