It's hard finding a good soul food place in Phoenix, I really thought this would be it but I won't be going back here. I feel like everything was cooked in a rush despite the wait time. There's no reason I should be calling my fries potato chips because that's how crunchy they were. The fried okra was soggy, the greens were decent, the catfish wasn't fried hard enough for me. My friends brisket wasn't completely cooked, the tibs were burnt, mac n cheese was bland. There were even sides missing which I don't understand because the order was read back to us, if they were out of something they should've said that and gave us the option to choose another side. Was in town for one day on Sunday March 1st, 2020 and really wanted some soul food. The hours of operation stated they closed at 8pm. I made it there at 6:51pm. I ordered my friend a brisket grilled cheese sandwich, greens, potato salad and I ordered myself chicken wing plate with cabbage and Mac n cheese. I read the reviews before I went so I knew service would be slow, yet i assumed the food would make up for the wait. The young guy who took my order came to me at 7:40pm stating that they were out of potato salad and cabbage... i didn't understand why it took so long for him to realize that but i was starving at this point so I just ordered another side of greens and cancelled the potato salad. At 8pm the young guy came back out and told me they were out of grill cheese. REALLY??? How? The grill or the cheese? I was pissed at this point so i wanted to speak to the cook about why they weren't communicating with each other or what items they didn't have before I placed my order. The young guy who took the order then tells me "we are about to closed so of course we won't have everything" I said really???? I came here over a hour before closing, It's not about what u don't have it's about u communicating that with the customer before you take their order and money!!! The cook then informed me he found the cheese and (in quote) "it was hiding from him" finally, I received my food at 8:30pm! They were cleaning up to shut down so i go to the car to get out they way... only to check my food and see they gave me a plain ass grilled cheese sandwich instead of the brisket grill cheese. I went back in and ask the young guy if he heard my order correctly and he said yes. I told him there was no brisket on that grilled cheese and that's when him and the cook started going back n forth, playing the blame game on each other. The cook went to the kitchen to remake it with the brisket and then 5 mins later told me they were all out of brisket and gave me my money back for the sandwich. So basically i waited over a hour in a half for a plain grilled cheese, bland greens and mediocre Mac n cheese. The fried chicken was decent. Terrible experience! I love my people but this was sad and depressing. Even with everything that went wrong they could've found ways to fix it or could've provided better customer service. Finally, I've found the very BEST Soul Food in AZ. I've tried several and have been left disappointed. Today was the day, my tastebuds sang with delight. We tried several dishes, each one better than the last. The collard greens are beyond delicious, the potato salad, perfect. The pork chop and fried chicken, sublime but the catfish don't even get me started on the catfish! My friend and I agreed that we'd never had better. Run, don't walk to this incredible restaurant! I absolutely loved it! Reminded me of my grandmas soul food. You can tell they put a lot of love and care into what they make. I was glad they took phone orders so I could just run in and pick up. We got the catfish with macaroni and cheese, greens, fried okra and yams. Literally heaven! I don't even like cornbread usually and even that knocked my socks off. The catfish was crispy yet moist and flaky, the Mac and cheese was so cheesy and gooey, the greens were so flavorful and savory, the fried okra tastiest so fresh and had the crunchiest breading, and the yams were the perfect sweet item to finish it all. BEST fried chicken I've found to date,here in Phoenix. I will definitely be back. Friendly and hospitable. I had this on a list of places to try and Sooooo Glad I Finally went. It's a hole in the wall, but don't let that deter you, it's comfortable and laid back. Very small venue but Excellent food. Stephanie and James, the proprietor(s) were so friendly and shared the peach cobbler that was still in the oven but we got a nibble, and it was as good as my grandmothers... thumbs up. This is True southern cooking (finally) and I could tell everything was fresh and tasted like made to order. The fried chicken pieces were generous and cooked to perfection, juicy, crunchy, awesome taste and not too dark. beautifully golden and hot till the last bite. And the mac and cheese was perfect, thick and hearty, not soupy. It was no fancy frills, just good honest straight forward food and people. I would have given 5 stars, but would like to make a couple minor suggestions... if they could put napkin dispensers on the table or just give you extra napkins with your dinner, as I like to eat fried chicken with my fingers. And a pat of butter and some honey would be nice for the cornbread, and though the collard greens were very good , they could maybe be cooked just 1 hour longer to make them even more tender. I generally ignore reviews that focus on rudeness, but my experience at Stacy's was so galling that I'm writing one of those reviews now. I showed up at noon, an hour after their posted opening, place was locked. Called the number, and spoke to someone who rudely told me they'd be open in 15 minutes. I was confused, and the guy got ruder. If this is how the proprietor treats a new customer *while wasting that customer's time* by opening over an hour late, then the food is no longer interesting to me. Stacy's won't get a penny from me. I am new to the Phoenix area and I love all the different eating places that are here. So sometimes when I'm driving around I dont always want to eat at the restaurants, I like to try the mom and pop eateries. As I drove down Glendale ave I saw the Off The Hook sign and decided to check it out. I'm not big on Soul Food because usually its seasoned to much for me. It's a small spot with tables and a restroom. There's a tv in there on the table. I ordered the fried catfish, I want chops but decided with the fish and a side of cabbage and string beans and potatoes. It took about 20 min. for my food but it was hot. I had 3 pieces of fish and a container of cabbage and string beans. There were also two small with hot sauce and one with tartar sauce. When I got in the car I had to taste a piece of the fish.......wow. delicious not overly seasoned but you tasted the season. The veggies were good to, no complaints. Oh and there was a small cornbread muffin. I definitely will return in the New Year! They also cater and there is a food truck. read more

You might wait a little for the food but that's because everything is made fresh, and the wait is well worth it!! Besides waiting an hour for our food, not being offered any drinks or menus, running out of the sides we ordered and placing whatever they had left in the kitchen in our orders instead of asking what we wanted, not using gloves while handling food and being extremely short staffed ... the food was actually really good. I enjoyed the catfish, the yams were amazing , the stuffing ( which was the side we didn't order) was actually pretty good and the Mac and cheese was bomb. The owner of this establishment needs to seriously get their stuff together. How unprofessional is it to have customers waiting an hour + to get food with literally one person working as the waitress and cashier. She was literally doing the best she could, I felt so bad for her. They get a three star rating because of the taste of the food and only because the taste of the food. The service was absolutely horrible. I would give this place another try . Yes the food was that good and when it comes to soul food I am very particular. So when a restaurant nails the Mac and cheese , you've got my vote!. Just moved here was looking for a good soul food place. This is definitely not it. Got the 3 meat combo. With Mac and rice gravy. And a peach cobbler. All for $29. Got home missing mac and cobbler. But for some reason had sweet potatoes. Called them and they claimed they remember packing the mac. Shrimp was very good. Got 2 ribs and a pile of sauce and fat for pulled pork. All the meat was cold. Went back to get the Mac and cobbler I was missing that I paid for. And they tried to act like they were giving me a cobbler for the inconvenience. Even though it was the $6 cobbler I was missing. Mac ended up being good. Cobbler is okay. Will not be going back and would not recommend this place. Even if all my food was there the first time. This place is hit or miss. I've had amazing fried chicken here and then have gone back to dried out little pieces that seemed that they were freezer burned. Service is not good- the people are nice but they don't seem organized. There are times when I get the impression they don't actually want customers, like they are overwhelmed. This is soul food to feed your soul. The pulled pork is moist and flavorful (and my new favorite). The brisket is smoky and yummy. But it's the southern sides that make me swoon. The collard greens are maybe the best I've ever eaten (including my own cooking) and the Mac and cheese is a bowl full of cheesy yumminess. Tip: If you're eating in, just take a table; they do table service. If you're ordering take out, go to the order window just inside the door. Also keep in mind that it's not fast food.
