I had not been to this place in years, and after this visit I found out why I hadn't been back. Things didn't start out great when I asked if they had combo plates, i.e. 2-meat plate, 3-meat plate, etc. The girl behind the cash register sheepishly said they did sell the meat by the pound. While that's ok, I like to order a plate and let the restaurant determine how much meat that is and serve it. But it wasn't to be. I have a feeling restaurants do this so you have to order everything a la carte. And that's what I had to do: some meats and 2 sides, individually charged for each. So I got some moist brisket, sausage, BBQ baked beans, and what they called twice-baked potato casserole. The brisket had great potential. It was juicy and had a great char. But that's where anything good ended. It was horribly bland, and if it weren't for the sauce there would have been no taste whatsoever. It looked great, but the taste didn't match the visual appeal at all. The sausage? Meh. There was nothing great about it, but there also was no reason to hate it. Just average. Again, the sauce helped. I did notice that the menu was dominated by sandwiches. There were no fewer than a dozen different sandwiches. Almost every meat was included. Maybe that should have told me I had no business ordering plain meat. But if there isn't a good base of meat, what would the sandwiches be like? The sides. The beans were really good. I could tell they were probably made the day before, which allowed time for the flavors to meld. I have no problem if that was the case. I was curious, though, because their menu said fried onions were mixed in. I found none. Maybe if the beans really were from the day before the onions had just disintegrated into the beans. But I still wanted that crunch. It could have used it. The potatoes....? No. Again, they were labeled as a twice-baked potato casserole. No way. These were just some mashed potatoes. And they weren't good at all. Again, a huge lack of salt. Pepper, too. No seasoning at all. They were just a glob of starch. I could not believe a BBQ place in Austin did not make their own sweet tea! They had a tank of unsweetened tea, but for sweet tea you had to get it from the soda fountain. Yuck. I got Coke. As for the restaurant itself, it's ok. Seating is plentiful. The dining area was a little dark, stemming from the fact that the location is on the interior of a strip center, with the only natural light coming from the front of the restaurant. The music was a curious choice. Rap music that was incongruous with the food being served. I attributed that to the summer hires who were probably high school students. I wanted this place to be good. I need more restaurants in my rotation. Unfortunately this one won't be a part of that. This was my experience on one day, so maybe if I went on a different day at a different time it would (could?) have been different. read more

SLAB is a cool place .. mainly focused on BBQ sandwiches but they have nachos and you can get meat by the 1/2 pound. I have only done the meat by itself and the nachos, both of which are good barbecue and more importantly barbecue you can get on your lunch hour. The lines will get a little long during lunch but they move relatively fast. They also have a decent beer selection at their bar so seems like it would be a cool place to get a bite and drinks after work. read more

Good stuff! I was very hungry in the late afternoon and heading to play many competitive games of ping pong, so I stopped here. The food was yummy. There were brisket nachos involved too but I only got a photo of the ribs as the nachos were halfway gone by then they were excellent and a generous portion. The St. Louis ribs are some of the most tender I've had. I wasn't a huge fan of the bbq sauce that came with the ribs but it's on the side and they have other sauces available as well- the one it came with was a little sweet for me. Planning on bringing my small rib aficionado this weekend after the pumpkin patch. One complaint... the kids meal ribs says it comes with two.. TWO. Mine will be asking where the rest are if I ordered him a kids meal they do have a great amount of meat on them but I have a 3 year old that eats like a teenager when he has ribs in front of him so these kids meals won't work for us we will be getting a whole rack and I'll be lucky if *I* get to have two. read more

Stopped by for the Yelp Texas Trending Machine today around 11:30 and it was clear that this plce already has a place in the heart of locals. Upon my first bite into the sandwhich i immediately almost choked on the dry ass meat and jalapeno cheddar bun. The bbq sauce was not what i expected. It was extremely sour and not pleasant at all. It was 90% vinegar with a little bit of bbq sauce. I guess people like that here? The ribs were meh. They put this strawberry jam glaze on top of it and it just tasted like melted sugar. Gross. Firstly, I feel their website and in store pricing is deceptive. After reviewing the online menu it looked like we could have a great lunch for under $30. I'm not a big eater, online they list sandwiches for around $7 (which is a great price). What a surprise when in store the "small" sandwich was not available. I should have walked. We ordered a rib sandwich, a half pound of ribs, and three sides, no drinks... over $40 before the requested tip for counter service. I thought OK - it's SLAB, it will be worth it for good BBQ. Absolutely NOT good. The ribs were dry and obviously not fresh. The sides were pretty small for the price and not very good. The slaw tasted like bagged cabbage mixed with one of the BBQ sauces, the potato salad was soupy and pretty gross. The Mac and cheese was MEH. You do not see the food and employees like you do in most bbq places as you walk down the line to get your food, The food: I got the moist chopped brisket, The OG. the buns are soft and buttery..delish! The meat was moist and just enough bbq sauce, great taste and not too fatty. For the sides, they make it easy to try since it's only $2 for a small, which is plenty, I opted to try the twice baked potatoes and the baked beans. The baked beans were soo good. If you like sweet beans this will be your jam! They are a little thicker than your normal baked beans too. The potatoes were lacking a little flavor tho. After leaving the location on Brody Street it was suggested we come to this location located off of 183 in Austin, Texas. I ordered the McDowell sandwich. It's supposed to be a boneless rib sandwich. The meat was just dry. Good flavor, but dry. We were sitting at the bar and I advised the waitress she asked me if I wanted something else to eat and I told her no because I wouldn't need it and it would be just a waste of food. In addition to this while I was eating the sandwich I bit into something not sure what it was, and when I looked at the meat I noticed something white something kind of hard, and as I pulled the meat apart, it appeared to be cartilage not very good to bite into.
