We were in town for the Maple Festival that was held on the square. Our waitress was very sweet and attentive. Given the unique menu, I do wish she would have walked us through it. The restaurant has a Japanese menu as well as a Bistro menu. We started with the chicken skin app. I have never felt as gluttonous but it was so delicious. Chicken skins dredged and fried. Crispy yummy perfect. We both had the special which was a surf and turf. A 6oz filet with your choice of surf, which we both picked the butter poached lobster. Everything about it was executed perfectly. The lobster was perfectly cook...its hard to get a tail that isn't overdone. The filet was cooked to our desired temp of medium rare, it had a great char. Sides were chefs pick and tonight it was garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli. The atmosphere was extremely loud and we could barely hear each other, this really killed the ambiance of our date night. Always a great experience! We enjoy going on Wednesday for the 'Date night' specials.

First; the inside is super nice. We sat by the windows and it was a great experience. Second: the waitress was great. She was attentive and quick to bring out our food. But sadly, the food was not that great. My husband got the ramen and I got sushi, both were only ok. Add the expensive price tag and we were not that impressed with the place. My work friends and I decided to go here for some happy hour cocktails and appetizers to celebrate the start of Christmas weekend. Easy to locate in Chardon square and abundant street parking available. Inside is adorable, cozy vibe and moderate noise. Took a seat at the bar and the bartender was quite attentive. I had the maple old fashioned, tempura shrimp and smoked salmon deviled eggs. The drink was not good. I drank it, but only because it was over $10. Too sweet, maple overpowered the bourbon. Just not well balanced at that price point. The reputation shrimp was good, as was the tartar sauce to dip. What I dream about though, are those smoked salmon deviled eggs. Absolutely outstanding. The salmon and capers just made for a salty, smoky delicious treat. Important to note that the shrimp and eggs are a priced each and not a set number in the appetizer. Hard to predict how many you'd want without knowing the size of the shrimp, etc. Interesting crowd, maybe it was the time of day we were there, but the elders of Chardon love this place. I was one of the younger people there and I'm a Gen Xer. The biggest disappointment has to be the pricing. We thought that we were in the happy hour crowd since we ordered at 3:50. They would not honor happy hour pricing that started at 4:00. We would've stayed longer, but that left a sour taste in my mouth. Be clear about that up front and don't give me a happy hour menu to order from if it's not happy hour. Felt that was deceiving! This was a great spot to take my dad for a belated Father's Day celebration. Rather than cash out the big bucks on the day of, we opted to wait until Thursday night to go to Square Bistro. By the way, if you weren't aware on Thursdays at Square Bistro they have Prime Rib Night!!! Out of the 5 person reservation, 4 ordered it and devoured it - but not in one sitting. The leftovers were just as great. I was the silly one who ordered something other than the prime rib deal. However, my meal was just as tasty of a deal. I had the duck, and it was a nice change of pace. I'm so used to only eating Asian style duck that this was a good switch up. It didn't scare me away quite like how duck l'orange did back in the day! Overall, the experience was truly gourmet. Which is shocking considering how far off into the boonies this place is. Update: returned for a full dinner on a Friday night. Was a hot day, but sat downstairs this time and it was very warm and very loud. Huge difference between up/downstairs in re: to noise. You sit very close to other tables, so difficult to hear conversion, but in their defense - it was a full house. Just don't expect a quiet evening. Ordered sushi and the new spicy tuna nachos. Nachos were good, but not what you'd expect. It's a spicy tuna "purée" (I know that's not the right name, but it's the best way I can describe it) with chips on the side. I've had this at other restaurants, but the waitress always clarifies that it's not "nachos" like you'd expect. May be something for the staff to let patrons know? I had the filet and it was amazing. This is the second time I have eaten at square bistro. Both times the food is awesome. So why a 2 rating? Both times we had reservations and Both times we were stuck in the upstairs portion of the restaurant. We always ask to be seated On The first floor and have been told twice they are reserved. But we had reservations. Of course those first floor tables were open when we left and we went for 5:30 to beat the crowd. But the main Thing was that we were waiting for the other couple to come so we sat at the bar for a drink the cot her couple showed up had a drink and it was 5:40. Well run establishment, reservations needed. We were greeted at sat down the steep winding staircase and in the basement bar area. It is still nice down there, it's clean, it's attractive but I was hoping for a nicer atmosphere than across from the bar TV's. But maybe they're saving the upstairs and the windows overlooking the square for older people. My parents are in their mid-80's I was thinking, no way they'd make it up or down these suckers. Anyway, the food is very very good and worth it. I'd definitely come back. Our friendly server explained the specials and brought us crispy fresh bread with homemade red pepper butter. The maki rolls were fresh and they have a good variety. The crab fritter was excellent and came with a tangy dipping sauce. My duck bolognese was absolutely delicious. Everything was thoughtfully put together and balanced. Even the beet salad was fresh tart arugula with a light raspberry vinaigrette, feta cheese, and candied walnuts. All the nice touches come through. Like an older building where they install a heater that blasts as you open the door so the dining room isn't freezing. This is my second visit here as we just moved to Chardon. We went on a Monday night and it is taco night but we decided tonight was sushi night as we missed our normal sushi place. Everything was phenomenal!! Without a doubt it was the best sushi we have ever had! I ordered the Baconator, Chardon Roll and my go to Philly roll. The Smoke Salmon was out of this world! By far the most flavorful and fresh salmon in a Philly roll I have ever had! This is the first time I didn't have to drown my sushi in wasabi, soy sauce and ginger! My husband was shocked that I was eating them without anything. The ginger was amazing! It actually tasted like ginger and not vinegar soaked mush! The wasabi is very strong and not for the weak! The guy at the table next to us also ordered the Baconator but the Thai Chili was too much for him and his buddies picked on him that he had just been outdone by a girl! My husband ordered the maple old fashioned! WOW! It was also amazing! I found my long island to be a little weak for the price but it was still very good in flavor! We will definitely be going back for more! I booked our reservation on their website 45 minutes prior to ensure we would get a table. The website is nicely done and very easy to navigate. We have been going to Square Bistro for years. We went there with friends and had reservations upstairs for a week. When we got there we were told that we would have to eat downstairs or wait an hour. We have someone who is with an injury and the stairs really were not an option but we had no choice. The service was great. Everyone said their drinks were ok but mine was terrible. Our food was so basic and so not worth what we paid. The salads were basic, thrown together and our soup was ok. We were looking for a special experience and food worthy of the cost but we were all very disappointed and will not be going back. Chardon has other restaurants that offer way better food and drink choices for the money. read more

Square Bistro is a great spot in Chardon Square. It is a small joint however they have done well making most of the space. They now have three levels: main, upstairs, and now the lower level which is where their sushi bar is located. They have awesome dishes and typically don't disappoint. The menu reminded me of J Alexander's from Columbus. It had an Asian flare with the same font on the menu. It was a quaint, village style restaurant and we had to wait about 20 minutes. My husband and daughter had a noodle soup - hers with chicken and his with shrimp. My daughter had vegetarian tacos. Her friend had salmon tacos. I had their burger with a house salad. My husband said the broth had a lot of flavor. He devoured it quickly. My daughter took some soup home. The tacos went fast. My burger was okay. Way too much sauce and I missed it had bacon in it. I don't do meat on meat. It was fine but I wished I did the soup. Would Definitely have done the soup instead. For dessert I did the expresso pot de crepe which alone was worth the visit. What a gem! I did not expect to find something this amazing in Chardon. We stumbled in very hungry and ordered the ramen and the poke bowls. They were giant bowls of the freshest and most perfectly cooked vegetables and seafood I've had in forever, and I live in Seattle! Walked in the restaurant Saturday around 4pm, no one was there as it must have just opened. We asked for a table but they stated they couldn't,because we didn't have a reservation. Not 1 table was occupied. You would think they could have managed it. We ended up somewhere else, drove by afterwards and still saw some empty tables. Very strange. read more

As a longtime Chardon-area resident, I am used to driving to Willoughby, Cleveland, Woodmere and other 20-50 minute drives for this sort of atmosphere and quality. Square Bistro has a hip and urban feel with it's lighted bar, decor and impressive wine and tap list. It has delicious food and a great happy hour with good deals on "tapas" style small plates. The pork tacos, chicken wings and asiago fries were all fantastic and I was salivating over some of the entrees I saw. I've been twice in the short time it's been open and plan on many more visits. This area has sorely lacked a place like this and I hope the community will support it. Thankfully it has looked relatively busy on both of my visits. read more

I used to like this place, but I feel like I just got ripped off. I ordered fresh oysters to go. Most places charge $1 to $1.50 each. They insisted on charging $3 per oyster. Went here a few times. Was mediocre. This time we did carry out and the burger that was supposed to be medium was absolutely raw. Called and asked to speak to the manager and one of the girls said, "I don't know if he is around, can I take a message?" And I told her it was important and there was a huge problem with the meal we ordered and she insisted I leave a message rather than to go get the manager. Once I told her, "Okay the burger was totally raw," she went and got the manager and he argued that it was probably just "very rare". Will not be returning. First off the place had a very cool vibe when you walk in. The waitress we had was very pleasant and on point. The food was delicious but the portions were kind of small. The Mongolian tacos were out of this world. The prices were pretty high. And they charged $7 for stuffed olives in a martini that was already $10! I thought that was crazy! Have been here before and was ok but this was not a good night we sat downstairs and ordered sushi from the bar none of the fish was trimmed very fishy tasting it seemed like the first time they had made sushi. We ordered a rainbow roll as well and it was half avocado and not fish but to top it off the avocado was brown and bad not sure how anyone making it could serve, horrible quality control on there part. the whole plate was sloppy and not good tasting. read more

Nice and quaint little restaurant. After three visits, I would say that the food is very inconsistent at times and the wait staff is not usually app to address the issue themselves. It's ok for Chardon's poor selection, but would rate it lower on the pack compared to others. I had the street tacos there last time and they were mostly fat and not tasty, I was informed they can't control the cut of meat. That's a problem if the chef can't control what they cook. We have not been back since, but if you're looking for something new, it might not kill you. Prices are high, drinks were their only highlight. Seating is tight, get there early. read more
