When we first walked in the girls at The hostess stand greeted us with a smile and seated us right away. They were super friendly and inviting which was really nice to walk into. The decor inside was elegant and calming. I love how they kept a lot of the history of the building itself and tied the history into the decor; beautifully done. We sat outside on a half booth half table and enjoyed the weather. Our waitress was so sweet ! She had the biggest smile and was so sweet with the kids. I got the blueberry mojito and my husband got a draft Garage beer. They were both great. Next we got the calamari which was fabulous ! Home made breading and sauce. Even the kids were all for it . We also received some complimentary bread and their specialty butter . The home made butter had a bit of savory to it and was in a league entirely of its own. I think it was a roasted red pepper blend. This complimented the red pepper but it was very tastefully done with how much was added . It was just right. My husband got their signature "Square Bistro burger " as it comes and he said it was great and really enjoyed the special sauce. He said next time he's going to ask for more of that sauce on the side that's how much he liked it. The kids both got the Mac n cheese and finished as much as much as they could ! Definitely a good pic for them. I appreciate the kids menu crayons and several options for them to choose from including a kids sushi roll! For my dinner I ordered the crab salad maki which was really amazing. The rice was perfect . Everything in the roll was extremely fresh and the crab salad itself was exceptional with the sauce they made it with. The eel sauce on top had the perfect amount of sweetness. The Tobiko Nigiri was well balanced and fresh. The miso soup really stole the show for me on all levels. I usually order miso soup everywhere we go and this was by far one of the best I have ever had. The tofu was home Made you could tell it had a wow factor and was extremely delicious. The miso broth itself was also nothing less than exceptional with the flavoring. It had to be made from scratch . It was fabulous. This is a little gem on the square! From the moment you walk in, the ambiance is great and the staff is very welcoming and friendly. The staff works really well together to deliver timely service from the moment you sit down. The servers are well-versed in knowledge of the menu and making suggestions to accommodate requests! For the food- for starters, the bread and compound butter are absolutely incredible and fresh. The duck flatbread is full of unique and cohesive flavors! I ordered the Korean bbq steak and my goodness, that did not disappoint. I will say as a suggestion, the Brussels sprouts would be better on the side and crisped up a little bit versus mixed in with the potatoes. The potatoes were cooked perfectly and the flavor of the entire dish was wonderful. Also ordered at my table were various sushi rolls which were all presented beautifully and had flavor to match. The ramen bowl boasted a bold broth with perfectly cooked noodles. The dessert was not quite what I pictured in my mind, I ordered the chocolate raspberry cheesecake and I was thinking it was going to be a vanilla cheesecake with chocolate and raspberry swirls but it is actually a chocolate cheesecake. August update, following a great July experience we went back. Yelp shows all the photos together so someone can really get a good idea of the offerings. Wednesday they offer date night prefix three-course meal for $35 with five options per category.... Went back to try it again. See photos of the steak Diane (huge portion, the only complaint was that there was some fat on the tenderloin, but the sauce and the potatoes and veggies and portion was impressive). I had the salmon that came with the prefix, along with a sushi roll and dessert. Satisfied with the food, plentiful and filling and well made. The sushi was tasty and fresh, and the raspberry creme brulee for dessert was excellent. Very much enjoy the bartenders wine and menu knowledge, and her homemade limoncello. Also enjoy her friendly and attentive service sitting at the bar. A little pricey at $150 for two people on a Wednesday night, but the meal portions are generous. Had four drinks between two of us, two full meals and dessert. As a little spot in chardon they are trying and doing a great job is classy as the big players. "Square Bistro" is a go-to place for us. When we don't have a special place we need to be. And we need an easy, relaxed evening. The establishment that usually comes to mind is "Square Bistro". It sits on the scenic square in downtown Chardon. The beautiful small town atmosphere is very calming. Great for a pre or post dinner stroll. You don't have to be concerned in any way about safety before or after dark. It's just a great place to be. Making reservations is easy... but definitely necessary. Lots of people love this establishment. It is always full. They have a very nice conventional menu as well as an excellent Sushi bar. And currently they are having their "Fall Clam Bake" with loads of options. We entered and met Megan, our server for the evening. She had a smile that never quit. Her bubbly personality made for a very fun evening. She was very attentive but never intrusive. After ordering our beverages and appetizers she gave us plenty of time to get comfortable and investigate the menu options. A basket of the most wonderful warm bread was delivered to the table and when it was gone another appeared in it's place. All 4 of us ordered the "Tomato Salad" - Organic Heirloom Tomatoes | Fresh Mozzarella | Basil Olive Oil | Aged Balsamic Reduction | Fried Garlic & Shallot Chips. It is one of my favorite items from their menu. Everything is so fresh and the house made dressing is wonderful. I always look forward to it. For our entrees my brother and I ordered the "Veal Milanese Piccata" - Panko Herb & Asiago Breaded Veal Cutlet | Lemon Caper Cream Sauce | mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. Our spouses ordered "Crab Crusted Grouper" - Pan Roasted Gulf Red Grouper | Cajun Crab Crust | Lobster Saffron Cream Sauce | Chef's Grain & Vegetable. I always enjoy the food at "Square Bistro" so I must say, during this visit the Veal was not quite up to their standards. It had good flavor, however the breading was too thick and a bit dry. Also it needed some additional sauce. I only make that note because it was not the norm for them. I'm sure it was a one-time misstep. Everything else we ordered was excellent as usual. After dinner was followed up with an excellent cup of coffee and fabulous desserts. We had "Pumpkin Spice Creme Brule", "Ice Cream Bomba", and "Candy Apple Tart". Each and every one was exceptional! I can't believe I haven't been here before! Now I understand the rave reviews. We had the kindest server, Sam. She was hustling, but patiently took the time to answer our questions. We started with lobster popper futomaki sushi roll. I was worried it might be too spicy with the jalapeno, but it was perfect. For entrees we had the singe lobster tail (served with wild rice and roasted brussel sprouts), and the lobster carbonara. We enjoyed our selections. We made reservations for a Tuesday night. Excellent service. For a wine dinner, the wine glasses were sub-par. They had a significant lip and the same type of glass was used for each wine. The shooter was interesting. The chocolate pot was delicious. The bisque was good but would have been better if served hot. The steak was just so so and the potatoes were too salty. The Sole was excellent. I'm not a fan of fois gras but my dining companions were happy to gobble up theirs and mine so I am guessing it was good. The wines were just ok. read more

5 stars, hands down! Great food, ambiance and service! Hubby and I visited Valentine's Day weekend, making a reservation, well in advance. We were greeted and seated right away. We proceeded to order beverages and starters. We opted for the seafood potato skins and bistro salad. The potato skins arrived, 1 large potato, cooked perfectly, split and topped with shrimp, scallops and crab, in a delicious mornay sauce. The salad was huge, fresh greens, chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, and pumpkin seeds, dressed in a delicious balsamic dressing, accompanied by warm sliced bread with a roasted red pepper infused butter. For our entrees, we ordered the strip steak, with garlic mashed potatoes and the crab crusted grouper with ancient grains and green beans. The entreescartived a short time later, generous portions, perfectly cooked. I ordered the strawberry shortcake cheesecake for dessert, which was the perfect ending to a fantastic dinner. We have been with this location a number of times and have never been disappointed with the food or the service. Tonight that stopped. Typically, when you have a special you provide more product than on your normal menu because of course it's "special". Tonight I ordered the $29 bouillabaisse and was disappointed Imagine my surprise when the advertised shrimp halibut and mussels came with two shrimp, two mussels and half a dozen broken pieces of whitefish in a watery tomato broth. When I expressed my displeasure to our very capable server, she said she would talk to the manager. When she came back, the managers response was basically "this is what it is" No monetary accommodation was made for the lack of protein, no offer to buy us a drink, no offer for anything at all. I guess the next time we will make a different choice when we want to go out and spend over $100 on dinner It's not like we have a shortage of restaurants in this area ****As a follow-up to my previous review, we were quickly contacted by the owner who apologized for the experience and invited us back to hopefully have the experience we typically expect at this establishment. I haven't reviewed square bistro in a while but I figure it's time to do so. The first thing we noticed when we walked in was the brand new wood floor. Real hardwood mind you not click level flooring which is pretty bold. Looks nice warm some place up a bit visually. My wife and I had a reservation for 7:45 and our table was ready when we got there so that's a bonus. My wife got one of the drink specials that they had some sort of summery fruity Martini thing. I chose my Maker's Mark and diet. The main reason we go to square is because my wife loves to have sushi and I am not a fish guy at all however this place seems to be changing my mind. We started out with the crab tots which are tater tots with minced crab in it. I did learn that for some of their crab dishes they use crab with a k crab stick but in here it's specifically said it was crab with a c actual lump crab. I'm not a crustacean eater but lo and behold it was really good. The appetizer came with three crab tots I only wish that they were fried a little bit longer as they were kind of mushy inside. It came with a mayonnaise base dipping sauce which was spicy and spectacular. I ended up getting the Korean barbecue roll which was spicy AF. Maybe it had something to do with the pickled jalapenos on top but I also had some very hot spicy sauce in it which I freaking loved. My wife ended up getting the Chardon roll which she equally adored. Overall it was nice and quiet and we give it five stars. read more

Decided to venture into their popular sushi and I'm glad I did. I stayed with the vegan options and even so, was very happy with those options. The portions are big (by my meager standards) and every single piece was delectable. Our server was efficient as I saw her handling several tables but still, she was on target when we wanted her. Went to Square Bistro last night with two other couples. While they all enjoyed their food, my meal was dry and flavorless. I started off with a caesar salad. I have never had a ceasar salad with a clear based dressing. It had no resemblance to a regular caesar dressing and was flavorless. My entree was the Chicken Bucatini . It supposedly was to come with a creamy sun dried tomato sauce. It may have had one ounce of sauce in the entire dish. The chicken was on the tough side. More importantly, the entire dish was totally bland and void of any flavor. I asked for some cheese and salt to add to it but it couldn't begin to save it. Won't be back anytime soon. read more

I'm torn on this! The service was great. Atmosphere was great. But the food was "meh". The calamari was good but over cooked. The flank steak was honestly AMAZING. However the onion soup was really bad, and the Arancini was not so great either. I was also disappointed in my son's "hamburger sliders". OMG. Don't call them sliders. It was a half of a hamburger cut in half (so literally 2 quarters of a hamburger like they saved the other half for the next kid) and a few fries. I can say I would give the place another try based on the wonderful service and some of the food was great, but I hope to not be disappointed again. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. read more

My wife and. I tried Square Bistro Saturday night after hiking with our dog My wife had custom Surf and Turf. She chose the Filet Mignonette and Lobster The Lobster tail came with melted butter that made the lobster excellent. When she finished lobster put on filet and was great I tried the flat iron Steak which came with a sauce and mashed rutabaga and green beans The filet. Came with same. The steak was pre sliced and well spiced We tried the death by peanut butter for desert. It was like a mixture of peanut butter and chocolate fudge. For $7 was excellent. We ventured to Chardon for a girls' lunch at Square Bistro on a blistery, Tuesday afternoon in January. I was surprised to see only 3 other tables occupied during "prime lunchtime hours." The restaurant was very drafty and cold. We kept our jackets on the entire time we ate. Our table started with the Smoked Salmon Deviled Eggs. These were so tasty. I should have ordered two orders simply for my lunch. A poached chicken egg filled with a deviled mousse topped with a pastrami of smoked salmon, lemon dill and salty capers, smoked paprika and chive aioli. Yum! For my entree, I had a Mediterranean Salmon Burger. It was too many different flavors over-powering each other. The Salmon Burger was well-done on top of a brioche bun. The edamame and olive tapenade was the base of the sandwich leaving a salty after-taste. The next level was the fresh cucumber underneath the salmon burger. On top of the salmon burger, feta cheese and tzatziki dressing. I would have liked the sandwich without the tapenade knowing how salty it was afterwards. The french fries were good and appeared to be freshly cut potatoes. I would go back a second time to try their sushi however. read more

I was very disappointed in the food at Square Bistro. My friend had the lamb shank dinner , he said it tasted spoiled. From the pic you can tell that it didn't look right. I had the beef cheeks stroganoff. It was awful. I took one bite and I was done. It taste so gamey and strange. I've had beef checks many times and it tasted nothing like beef cheeks. It even smelled horrible. The reason this restaurant is even getting a 3 star review is that the service was great ! read more

Busy Friday night, but we had reservations. Great area downstairs - but beware if you have anyone in your party who might have an issue with steep stairs. Once we got down the the ambiance was great- comfy, cozy and a great place for dinner and catching up with friends. Food was great- our group ordered the drunken mussels- we all got a taste and they were delicious! The French Onion soup was very good- featured local Geauga County Middlefield Cheese! The Poke bowl was very good- as was the bouillabaisse! I had the stroganoff noodles and it was very tasty, and more than I could eat. A couple of our group ordered the special "moochie" ice cream and I got to taste it- very good. Good food- lovely environment, for sure will return. Great service as well!
