I found his attitude condescending and felt like he was speaking down to us, which is especially disappointing considering we shop at this store almost every week. An employee had been helping us with a woolly butterfly bush that had obviously been there for a while and was growing significantly sideways. We were concerned about whether it would recover. The employee was very helpful, said he thought it probably would, but understood our hesitation and suggested that we ask at the counter if they would consider a small discount. So we did. The manager came out and told us, "I could have sold that for full price yesterday." Okay... then why is it still sitting there today? He went on to say that he would give us the discount only because his employee had told us to ask, but that in his opinion the plant was not discountable. The discount was 15% on a $29.99 plant. That comes to approximately $4.50. Let that sink in. A regular customer who shops in your store almost every week, whose large backyard is filled with plants, flowers, and trees purchased from your business, was made to feel uncomfortable and talked down to over $4.50. The money was never the issue. We were concerned about purchasing a plant that might not make it, and one of your own employees suggested we ask. Instead of simply handling a very minor request graciously, the manager turned it into an unnecessarily unpleasant interaction. Apparently $4.50 was worth risking the goodwill of a longtime customer. I purchased the plants we already had and then left. I continued on to Home Depot and purchased the rest of the flowers I needed there. All over $4.50. Sometimes customer service costs a business far more than the tiny discount they were reluctant to give.

During spring time Moon Valley Nurseries is a bit of a second home. I love checking out what they bring in for the year, as well as stocking up on any necessary supplies to get my garden ready for the scorching summer. On a recent visit to the nursery, William helped me stock up on my mulch and fertilizer. Service was excellent and he brought everything to the car. This week I had a delivery of a few plants that I had the nursery staff pick out for me, organized by LP and Quent. The plants were above and beyond my expectations in every way. I received a desert gold peach and it looks so healthy - I can't wait until it starts fruiting. The Santa Rosa Plum looks great, but as expected a little dormant at this time of a year. The chuparosa, a desert must for attracting hummingbirds was a perfect low water choice in our climate. Last but not least.. and my most favorite of all - the tangelo. Gorgeous tree, absolutely cannot wait to see this one take off. Tim and crew came to plant within the allowed window, and again service was beyond my expectations. Tim was so professional and made sure everything was done right, my trees were staked, the crew watered and cleaned up after. I've worked with Tim before and he and his crew delivers consistent high quality service and planting. I think the only thing that could make my Moon Valley Nurseries visit better is to do some sales on fertilizers/moon juice from time to time. I know they used to do buy 2 get one free and buy 3 get one free, but I haven't seen one in ages. These sales are always greatly appreciated by my plants!

There is always so much to see here and during December, the feel of the holidays/season is in full display. If you need a table arrangement made for you, there's a person (I swear who looked a little like Santa Claus--was that a dream?) who was busy making them. The Christmas cacti were so beautiful. I wanted to buy one since my really old one at home decided not to bloom this year! If you need Christmas or holiday spirit and live close by, you should visit! It's a beautiful place.

Not only do we go to them during the holidays but rely on them throughout the year when we need additional plants and trees for our backyard. We first started using Whitfill back in the early 2000's when they were on 40th street south of Roeser. We literally lived across the street from their nursery and when they moved to their current spot on Southern we followed! We have decades of photos with our boys standing next to the tree they choose for Christmas and the tradition continues now with our Sphynx cats! They used to have a peacock walking around but unfortunately he is no longer there. They are pet friendly and we are comfortable taking our cats there in the stroller. Not only are their prices and tree selections the best in town but their customer service and knowledge of anything tree related is vast! They know what they are doing and don't try to upsell or get you to buy unnecessary items. They are the real deal!

I found the layout of the whole nursery very confusing and disorganized. I looked around a bit, but found a lot of the fruit trees weren't looking their best with a few half dead ones or odd shaped ones. I was looking for a desert milkweed and they had one hidden behind some other stuff. It was a single sprig hanging out of a pot. I gave up and left to continue my journey elsewhere.

I heard yelled out from the backseat. "Ok, kid, let's stop in to get a bigger pot to move your plant into. I swear all I wanted was a new pot for our indoor plant, but when you're there you remember that 15 gallon planter that's been sitting empty on your front porch, the potting soil you'll need to fill the new pot to replace the old, and a plant to go into it. Sure, I looked confused and lost and that's probably what clued Gina in on asking if she can drive us around in her golf cart and show us (but mostly my kid) all the plants, the bunnies that have made the fruit bearing tree section of Moon Valley Nursery their home, the birds that flock to their trees and all the different plants you could really ever want both indoor and out. "Daaamn Gina..." (is what was replaying in my mind on a loop, but I not dared to say out loud - throwback to 1990's Martin Lawrence sitcom, Thursdays on Fox) Had I never met you Gina, I would have probably found my new pot and made my way home having only the *one thing to do, but no, you had to go answer *all of my hundred questions about what plant will be good on my porch, no I don't want to attract bees to my front door, maybe something that won't grow taller than the ceiling of my porch, so those cool looking fruitless olive bushes are out, but boy do I wish I could put one there. So yes, as you may have already surmised, I left with our new pot, a bag of potting soil, a rosemary plant (because rosemary is actually a detractor for most insects and you can get fresh rosemary for your meals to boot) as well as a jug of their moon juice fertilizer. So... It's crazy how expensive this new pot for the rubber plant was $140, but look at all this other "free" stuff that came with it, right?!?!?... right?!?!?... Please don't tell my accountant that I spent too much on plants again. Well Gina, you were certainly wonderfully helpful, you answered every question I had and a few others I didn't, you made our visit more like an adventure through the nursery and helped me finish two projects with one visit. Whomever at Moon Valley Nursery is responsible for having hired Gina, you made wonderful choice!
