Don't go here, don't buy there plants. Horrible customer service, very rude, unprofessional, and just shitty quality plants that are root bound, old and dying. The manager literally ripped a pot out of my hand as I was buying it and yelled at me saying to take my "business elsewhere" because I mentioned the pot was 3/4th empty of soil. The manager got in my face and was so aggressive I felt uncomfortable and like he was trying to get in a fight. I previously asked if they had this specific plant that wasn't root bound and not one with half of the leaves dead. When they said no, I was planning to buy the plant anyway because I drove all the way up from Tucson, but as I was checking out I asked why the pot was missing 3/4 the soil and he ripped the pot out of my hands. I told him as he ran away with the pot still yelling insults at me that I was still willing to pay the $90 for the plant even though it looked like it was going to die. He screamed that I should leave. It was an insane and unprofessional experience. The guy was rude immediately when I got there but it was just crazy how butt hurt he got from asking questions about the health of a $90 tree. Honestly, the tree wasn't worth $40, it was root bound, practically a bonsai, half dead, dried dead leaves, dead branches, and in a 5 gallon pot that didn't even have a 1gallon worth of soil in it, but I drove all the way there so I figured I buy it anyway. If you want to to see for yourself ask to see their White Sapote. I left because the whole staff was insulting me and saying I should think twice about insulating their plants. This is the absolute worst company to do business with. I have been a loyal customer now for over 10 years and after I purchased $2000 worth of trees and plants to be installed with a drip line system they installed the wrong emitters on the ends leaving with water busting through my hose lines and calcium build up with my trees and plants getting no water. When I asked for them to kindly help me out to fix it, they said they can't help me and to gave me some other businesses with phone numbers to try out. So, I lost so much money with them and they didn't even care about working with me to make things right. Please don't use this small family owned company. As others, we have driven past this place for years. I started following them on social media and that gave me the push to visit. The photos online were gorgeous. I thought it strange that when you inquired about prices they wouldn't state they on the posts, but send you private messages. When we drove into the parking lot it was mostly empty which was fine - especially with Covid. A girl was standing outside (no mask) and greeted us. Pointed us in the direction of what we were looking for. Everything looked dead. Nothing looked like the pictures they posted just the day before. No one could give us prices (nothing is marked) Feel like the two people could buy the same thing and get different prices. Seemed very unorganized and cluttered. Left without buying a thing and I never leave a nursery empty handed. Guess we will continue to just drive on by. *covid - definitely NOT following any guidelines here. read more

We bought 2 figs trees and a bag of recommended fertilizer last week from this seller. One tree is not doing too good and I called them. They would not take the tree back, just kept arguing how the tree is not dead, to just keep it. This is very disappointing and a contradiction to what they said selling the tress. Was a satisfied customer until today. Just got taken for $400 for installation of irrigation pressure reducer. That's $150 parts MAX. Took installer 1/2 hour to replace old reducer. That works out to $500 per hour for installation. Tried to stop the job, but pipes cut before I could call it off. Last job they'll do here. read more

Customer relationship skills are completely lacking, highly unprofessional and I will no longer be shopping at a business that has such little regard for their dedicated customers. I have purchased 14 plants and 1 tree at Richards as well as 5 bags of their 'mulch'. I make the trip which is a ways from my home to spend my money at their independent business. Recently I took home a plant that when I got it home had not been watered for some time. It was bone dry to the bottom of the 5 gal container. I soaked it for a day before planting it, even then the soil all fell away from the roots and it went into shock. Weeks later I took my receipt and photos to Richards to ask them about it, "Paul" insinuated I was confusing the ailing plant with a plant I had purchased somewhere else? It couldn't have been one of theirs. Decided to give the plant more time to 'recover'. Two months past, went back again, this time spoke with "Adam", (receipt and photos) as the plants seem to be dying more instead of getting better or staying somewhat the same. His response was "Anyone could come in with photos of a plant they got anywhere....just because you have a receipt".....Another employee chimed in to say "once you take it home, we aren't responsible for how you plant it". I have purchased many plants from them, this is the only one I've had an issue with yet they refused to take any ownership for the situation. Placed blame squarely on their 'assuming' I didn't know what I was doing. Though everything else I have is doing well, which I showed them photos of my other plants. Then Adam stated "Well, we can't just give you a new plant". We are talking a $40. plant. After having spend as much money as I have at their store they had zero interest in keeping me as a customer! Twice they tried to infer I was trying to 'pull something' over them? Customer relationship skills are completely lacking, highly unprofessional and I certainly will not be going back to Richards. I gave to agree with alex. It was odd that at a nursery there would be dead and/or dying plants. I'm sure at this point the money is made on the sale of buildings and playground equipment. I came here to check out Chimenea pots and ended up buying one along with a fountain that was missing a motor. I couldn't be happier with the Chimenea. It was priced right and it was nice to get a list of tips along with the purchase of it. After a trip to Home Depot the fountain is running and on my front patio. My wife loves the fountain although I'm not a huge fan. If it makes her happy it makes life easy for me. I would go back to the nursery if I needed a specific item I knew they had or if I need another Chimenea pot. Other than that I will likely go to moon valley nursery which is about 1 mile from my house. read more

Having seen this place many, many times when coming back down I-17 from my trips to Cave Creek (ironically, nursery trips), I never seemed to have the time to stop in until recently. Additionally, it wasn't especially easy to get to, as you need to exit (if going Southbound) well before you can see it. If you drive past going Southbound, your options are going back Northbound to Dixileta and then taking the Southbound frontage road back toward Jomax, OR continue South and exit at Happy Valley, thereafter taking the surface streets (35th Ave.) North. The lacking highway infrastructure leaves something to be desired, and it's definitely not their fault, but that is honestly how I ended up taking this long to stop in, despite driving by numerous times. That out of the way, I definitely think it was worth stopping in, and was quite glad that I finally made the time. There is a fairly good selection of plants here, including cacti and succulents, but my draw is always the agave, one of my favorite plants to grow in our challenging climate. I'm always on the lookout for something I don't have, or something new or rare in the trade, as all manner of interesting hybrids and variegates have become increasingly popular in recent years. While the website mentioned a few varieties of interest to me, including A. deserti and A. utahensis, both of which I'd been in the market for, I wasn't able to find any. I did, however, come across some nice specimens of A. palmeri (why is this so hard to find in retail?) and A. montana (neither of which is on the website, so a nice surprise!). I already have the latter, but bought one as a gift for someone else, and grabbed a pair of the A. palmeri for myself. While fairly variable as a species, this particular selection of A. palmeri was exactly what I wanted, with beautiful bud imprints on the leaves and wicked marginal spines. Some other goodies I saw, which did not go home with me due to space considerations, included some very nice A. asperrima ssp. asperrima (A. scabra), A. 'Sharkskin' and, intriguingly, the not-so-common, typical form of A. lophantha. Plenty of places carry the 'spendida' and 'quadricolor' variety, but it has been a while since anyplace I've been had the typical variety, which grows much larger and seems to be a hardier plant. Another favorite that seems less common these days was A. zebra, which are always fantastic lookers, with their vicious marginal spines, twisted terminal spines and rigid, scabrous leaves. Additionally, they had some very nice, specimen sized A. tequilana. Another surprisingly not-so-common species. Last but certainly not least, I spotted another gem hiding in the corner somewhere. Unless my eyes deceive me, I'm pretty sure that was A. vivipara, sometimes confused with A. angustifolia. Definitely do not see those too often, so that was a nice Easter egg of sorts. Lastly, I must call out the lovely stand of bamboo they have here. Finding agave and bamboo in the same place is always a win-win while nursery hopping, at least for me. Near as I can tell, it was B. oldhamii, which seems to thrive even in our summers. With everyone as friendly and helpful as they were, and now that I know how to get to this place, I will definitely try to make it part of my regular rotation and stop by more regularly. If you're in the area and looking for some plants you might not find elsewhere, I highly recommend checking them out. read more

Adam was awesome, very helpful, willing to walk around with us and show us several different types of trees. He wasn't pushy and didn't sell us anything we did want and directed us to plants that would do well in the AZ heat. We ended up buying 4 trees and 4 plants, as the prices were extremely competitive! I've been looking for a nursery place to purchase several grape vines and came across with Richard's Garden Center from browsing the craiglist site. When I came to visit, Jeff was upfront to help me. I was impressed with the customer service. The staff are very knowledgeable. They even gave me a guide on how to take care my plants...never have that experience from Home Depot or Lowe's. And the best part is they have a military discount. I would recommend Richard's Garden Center to anyone! I purchased a number of trees from these clowns a year ago and they told me that a cherry tree would grow in Arizona. Not just any cherry tree but the special ones they had there at the nursery so like a fool I fell for the used car salesman approach to selling people something they knew wasn't going to grow. I made numerous phone calls after the leaves fell off and no new growth. This year it's dry, and I'm taking it out. The people were of absolute no support even with numerous e-mails. Ryan, the Tech came out the next day...he called just like I was told he would do to let me know he was on the way. When he got to my house he was extremely courteous, professional and conducted a thorough investigation of what the problem might be. After seeing the reviews here, I'm really surprised, so I had to write my own! I went here for the first time a few weeks ago - and WOW - sooo much variety!! Especially some of the more rare fruit trees... no way you could find those at Home Depot. Plus, they are grown IN Arizona. We purchased 4 plants - watermelon, 2 bell peppers (1 black, 1 blue), and one more (can't remember... possibly cantaloupe). Planted them when we got home that day, and they're doing fantastic. I'd say about 2.5 times the size as when we got them!! Admittedly, I was a bit worried because they looked almost half dead... maybe that's hence the other reviews, but they truly are doing great. They also have the most awesome playhouses, sheds, barns, even doggie houses (so freaking cute), and lots of garden accessories, like statues and fountains. The thing I loved MOST about this place was how much I learned just talking to one of the guys there! I asked a question about my dying lemon tree, and he gave me TONS of advice!! Extremely knowledgeable and honest... I can't wait to go back. And I WILL go back... I've got my eye on one or two of their fruit trees :D read more
