Not only was our presence not acknowledged initially, but after 5 minutes of looking around the store we were still treated like "ghosts." Ive gone into this Spokes store twice. Both times, i was insulted by a guy that I assume is the manager or owner. First time, I asked about a used Specialized FS Stumpjumper that they I had. I was told it was $2k. I looked the bike up on my phone and saw that it was 4 years old and barely sold for 2k new. When I asked about that, the guy told me i needed to spend more to get a good bike. This past time, I went in and asked if the mechanic had a used shifter. Whoa, youd think I insulted the guy with that question. I was told that any shifters taken off bikes are thrown away and then asked why Id even want a broken shifter. I asked for used, not broken. Im sorry that I dont want to spend 300 for a shifter on an old road bike. Go to Spokes in Wheaton. That shop is much better with good customer service. read more

Went in using a Groupon for a tuneup. The service guy suggested that I replace the chain ($20-30 + $10 labor) and rear tire ($25), and I agreed. He said that if they run across any additional costs, they would call me. When I went it to pick up the bike I was charged about $110. When I questioned the higher amount, they said they had to replace the rear brake pads ($13), a spoke ($18), and there was labor costs to replace the rear tire that weren't mentioned initialy ($8). I first complained about the labor cost for replacing the tire, since it wasn't mentioned initially like the fee for the chain was and it was something that I could have easily done myself. Their response was just "you're complaining about $8?". I realize that most things have costs and I would have been fine if I returned and was suprised by just one of these charges. But to get all three of these just bothered me, as I now just plunked down $145 (including the cost of the Groupon) on a 12 year-old bike that I primarily use to ride to the train station. I'm not saying that they inflated the bill with unnecessary items, but I was upset about the lack of communication for these additional items when the service guy told me they would contact me if there were any add'l charges. Take this review as you want, as a complaint on their customer service and not the actual job done. If these are the types of things that bother you, then you may want to make sure everything is clarified up front. read more

I called Spokes today and spoke to a very nice man on the phone. I really had no knowledge of bikes so I had no idea what I wanted, all I knew is that I wanted something I could fit into my car, ride on the road, bike paths, and some limestone style bike paths. He said he had some great options that would work great and to come on in. I came in and he was very nice showing me the two options that would fit my needs the best, I didn't feel pressured to buy which I always appreciate. I tested out the two bikes and knew the Liv Alight 2 was the one for me after testing both. After I got rung up another man helped show me how to break down the bike so it would fit in my car and was very helpful as well! Great Job!! read more

Went here for the first time & immediately got bad vibes. The guy I spoke to came off like a snake oil salesmen.. Some Indian-ish guy who I could barely understand tried to convince me that some cheap Kenda Kwest slicks (65 psi) cost $30 a piece & were made of "high quality rubber". When I told him I saw the same tires online for $15 a piece, he insisted they were a different model. Oddly enough, the more expensive 100 psi Kenda Kwest slicks I wanted even sell for less than $20 online. After he realized I wasn't a gullible dummy, he basically shrugged me off as if no longer interested. I probably would've still bought some nice tires here (to save myself the hassle of internet shopping/shipping) but I had nothing but bad vibes about the place. I'm in the market for a nice road bike soon. Plan on spending around $2000. I will not be getting it here & wouldn't recommend it to anyone else either. I walked in on a Saturday hoping that I could get a salesperson who wasn't rude like the other reviews said. No, I got the rude dude. He had blonde hair and I'm not quite sure he was the manager everyone was saying was a jerk, but wow was this particular guy insane. I have never been in a store where someone had been so bad at trying to sell me something. I obviously didn't know anything about bikes so I was asking a couple of basic questions and not only did he give the most generic non-answers, but he totally blew off my mom when she asked about Schwinn and Raleigh bikes, which they don't carry. At least you could give me a truthful answer, but he was incredibly rude and unhelpful. Not only that, but he talked like he was reciting from the "Idiots Guide to Sales"; incredibly formal, unhelpful, and aggressive. Later, the older balding gentleman with an accent tried to give me a better answer because he had been listening in, but he didn't apologize for the other guy. I wish I had been able to talk to him but he was talking to another customer. I would have considered buying the bike I tried but I will never, ever purchase it from them. Turns out... he's the owner! He made it a point to let me know that they only do fittings for "professionals" and racing cyclists, but that he would take a look at my bike anyway. After looking on line and at REI for new cycling shoes (wasting hours without any success) I stopped in at Spokes. Found exactly what I needed (Specialized) in less than 5 minutes. Basil, the owner, was so helpful. Left the store with the shoes, cleats, new gloves, shirt and rain jacket. This is the kind of place I want to spend my money. With many other cycling shops closing in the area, please help keep Spokes alive. We need a place like this! read more

The owner acknowledged me and excused himself while he assisted another customer with helmets. When he became available, he capably took care of my needs, and I had to insist on paying him for his service. I was very impressed by this shop. Honest, skilled, and customer-oriented. Went into Spokes Bike shop in Naperville and bought a new bike, and car carrier for my son. Got the carrier home (still in the box as I have a pickup truck and my son wanted it for his car) and when I opened the box I could tell it had been opened before. Noticed a part was missing, so I boxed it back up and took it back, as it was useless without the missing part. Basil (Manager?) reluctantly gave me my money back and said that it had not been returned before, when I questioned whether it had or not. He tried to sell me the same one that he had just put on another customer's car, sitting in the parking lot, but now they had changed their minds and wanted a locked rack instead. I'm not sure where he gets his inventory if he saying that it's never been returned. Here we are two days later and he just called my son and started giving him a hard time. Stating we had scratched it up and accusing him of not telling the truth. Not sure why he was accusing him of anything. I was the one that bought and paid for it and carefully opened it up only to see that it was already used and missing the part. Will never do business with this place ever again. He should have had the decency to call me instead of my son. I was honest enough to tell him that a part was missing, so I don't know why he eventually (2 days later) got upset with my son. Prices were overpriced too for all the after market products that were purchased for the bike. read more

I got into the sport of cycling seven months ago when I started training for triathlons. I came to Spokes Naperville knowing that I wanted a triathlon/tt bike but with only a mediocre knowledge level when it came to cycling. I ended up purchasing my first tri/tt bike from them for several reasons. First, the personable service. I have been to spokes approximately 8-9 times in the last seven months and they always remember who I was. I came into the shop three times even before I purchased my bike and each time they remembered me. 2. When purchasing my bike they took into account my goals, training level, body type/size and price range and recommended a few different bikes all of which I was invited to try out to find the right one for me. Once I found the right bike for me, they fitted me to the bike to get my optimal comfort and power levels out of it. 3. Since purchasing the bike I have purchased triathlon specific cleats and then a new saddle. Each time I had to get my fit adjusted, which they gladly did. 4. Every time I am in there I have a new list of questions I found out through reading sport specific books and magazines that they gladly take the time to answer from their personal experience/knowledge. I mentioned that I was nervous about getting a flat while out on the triathlon course since I have never dealt with one. They took me back into the service area and showed me how to change a flat on both the front and rear wheels!! How cool?! I literally can not say enough great things about this shop. Spokes has a great staff who provide both knowledgeable and personal service. They have been nothing but help since I have joined the sport of cycling. They create community in the sport hosting group rides as well. I drive an hour north to get to the shop due to the many reasons I listed above. This last spring I felt that it was time to reward myself for my completion of my MBA by purchasing a new bicycle. After performing the initial research and analysis, I started to visit the different shops, taking some test rides and getting to know the folks that ran and worked in the shops. This step is what led me to visit the Spokes location in Naperville along with three other shops that carried the other brands and models that I had narrowed my search down to. What I found most interesting is that this was the only shop that I went to where the emphasis was not on the "brand" or "model" but rather the "fit" of the bike and conversation revolved around this importance. I did not purchase the bike from this first interaction, but continued visiting other shops and getting perceptions around the various options. I did eventually come back to this shop and purchased the Specialized Tarmac Elite at the end of April. I chose this bike because of the way it fit and how the owner and staff at this shop took their time to meet with me, discuss my concerns and show me their available alternatives. They did not belittle other brands or shops like those other shops did with their brands and their shop. In the weeks since, I have logged 1,753 miles and look to easily coast to my 2,000 mile target for the season. (I define season as April 1 - October 31). If you are looking to purchase a bike and really want the bike that is best for you and that "fit" is the most important aspect you are facing and I would hope that you enjoy a similar experience to my own and visit the folks at Spokes in Naperville. The owner, Basil, is not friendly to deal with. It would be nice to support a locally owned business, but I'd rather buy from someone who seemed to care and he doesn't. Also, in sales it is never smart to make negative comments about the competition. Basil will tell you how Trek is junk. He used to sell Trek at his store but no longer does. He says it was his decision because the quality of Trek declined. Whatever the truth is, it creates negativity and distrust and personally turned me off. I'll by my bikes elsewhere. read more

I brought my bike in for a standard tuneup ($80) and to have a couple specific issues fixed. The two issues were 1. when I would engage the rear break, the pads would not return to the fully open state. hence, the pads would continue to rub the tire to a certain degree. not enough to stop the bike, but enough to drag and slow the tire slightly. and 2. I felt the wheel (rim) was not true. when I would watch it spin, I could see a slight bump or wobble. I did not worry about this as much, because the tune up includes making sure the rim is true. So that is why I brought it in. I dropped it off and spoke with one of the techs who had blond/light brown hair. it wasn't Basil, although I did have interaction with him. As I left the shop, I had complete confidence that my bike would be done right. the tech even told me he'd make it "better then new", and there was "nothing on it he couldn't fix". I felt good. So I picked up my bike yesterday. I assumed everything was good and took it home. I pulled it out of the car and started checking it. Both of the problems I truly brought it in for were still present. Granted, they were much better, but they were still issues. I was very surprised. I called the shop and (yay. not.) got Basil on the phone. Before I continue, I must state that Basil has NO social skills whatsoever. He does not know how to speak openly and honestly with a customer. anyway, I continue.. Basically, after some convincing, he said I should bring the bike back in and they would look at it and fix it. I went back in to the shop today. I politely waited my turn, as the techs were on lunch, and Basil was running things on his own with one cashier. Now, I am not a bike mechanic, I know very little about which part does what. When I explained to Basil what was happening, he kept telling me what the problem WASN'T. I explained the break problem again, and showed him how the pad was rubbing, and he told me it was FINE. telling me it was smooth, and that it was the Hub that was slowing it down. No, I showed him that the wheel moved freely when I pulled the break pads away from the rim. but he ignored that and just said again how great the wheel was moving. I asked about the trueness of the rim, he assured me that his tech trued the wheel and it was rock solid. that the slight wobble I saw was the tire, not the rim..... what? I gave up on that, and continued to work on the break issue. he continued to tell me how it was fine, even when I showed him it wasn't. he then accused me of being "picky". holy crap. I just spent $80 and I'm too picky? He even said, "if you think its the breaks then you can buy new breaks" So.. I kept on him. I wasnt leaving until this bike worked as it was supposed to. He, loosened the hub, tightened a spoke, none of it did anything. he just kept saying, "ok, hows that??" He just wasnt getting it. I explained again, trying to use different words. Now, with the bike up on the rack, I had a really good view of the breaks. It was clear that one break pad was closer to the wheel then the other. So I asked, "is it possible to make the space between the pad and rim equal on both sides?" out comes the wrench, and he moves the break arm, making it equal on both sides. Guess what? Fixed the problem. thats right.. I HAD TO FIND THE PROBLEM FOR HIM!!! I spent a half an hour explaining the problem, and he couldnt understand what I was talking about. why is it that I could see the issue, and he could not? I'll tell you why. he did not care. After that final adjustment I said "Hey! That did it!". guess what Basil said. Nothing. He took the bike down off the rack and walked away. you would expect something like "Oh, you meant blah blah, I can see what you were saying". Nope. Nothing. Basil had no interest in solving my problem. the moment I walked in the door, he was on the defensive, trying his hardest to disprove and convince me that something was right when it was not. He was more worried about defending his tech's work then helping me. I was unhappy. instead of listening to me, and finding a solution, he spent all his energy telling me how the breaks were fine, the rim is fine. and you know what, they were. they are fine, but they were out of alignment. as I said in the beginning. I'm not the bike mechanic. I dont care what part isnt working. I can just tell you the symptoms, and its up to YOU to figure it out and fix it. thats what I pay you for. All the negative reviews are true. Basil is rude and dismissive. He will do his best to make you feel like you know nothing, and tell you what you need. Some customers respond well to that. Heaven help you if you disagree with him. He easily writes you off if your thinking is not in line with his. He is all about sales. And while I can respect that, he is not doing his shop any favors with his attitude. I will NOT be returning to Spokes Naperville. You shouldn't either. read more

Didn't have a problem giving me his advice on what he would do and what's probably best to regardless of what's more or less expensive just the right path to take, no pun intended. I just got my bike back today and it rides like it's brand new. Replaced a few things but the tuning is on point. Definitely recommend this place and will to anyone I know who needs bike work done. I really liked Spokes but my budget didn't. As soon as my husband and I walked in we were immediately taken by surprise. There are bikes everywhere! I can't believe they could even fit that many in such a small store. No matter what type of bike you are looking for, I guarantee that they have it. We were approached by the Manager as soon as we walked in (at least I think he was the Manager or Owner). He was older and extremely professional. He knew a lot about the store and about every bike in there. He was so polite and since I don't know much about bikes he was extremely helpful by explaining the difference between them and why some are priced more than others, why some have fatter tires than others, etc. We are looking for a road bike that we can really put the miles on. Not any type of off road bike. So he showed us those and let us sit on them and try them out. What got me was the price range. These bikes are expensive! But that is because they are the real deal... more professional bikers rather than myself. The one bike we looked at was 500 dollars. Between the two of us, we did not want to spend $1,000. We explained to him that we really wanted to be within the $200/$300 price range and he was extremely accommodating! He did not mind that we wanted to pay less....much less. He showed us at least three of other bikes, but they were still on the higher end of $300. Although I left without buying a bike, I really liked this place. If you are a serious rider with some serious cash money, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, I would still recommend going in and looking around. I went in about 5 years ago while my son was at the tae kwon do class next door. Talked to Basil ( Owner) and ended up purchasing two bikes for me and my wife , a kids bike for my son , tag a long for my daughter and a Chariot for my new born. It was a pleasant experience and he seemed to be a very decent guy. Last October I decided to take up road biking and some easy mountain biking at the ripe young age of 45 and an ever increasing weight of 230lbs on a 5' 11" frame. Looked at a few bike lines at near by bike shops. All were good products and they had pretty good deals since they were trying to reduce inventory before the new 2012s come out. I also stopped by Spokes, talked to Basil and told him that I am hoping to buy a road bike for about $1,500.00 or so. He showed me 7 different road bikes anywhere from $1,400.00 to about $2,400.00. They all looked good however I had no clue about the differences between frames or components and I told him so. This guy started by asking if I am planing to start riding long or short distances and what is the longest distance I have ridden. My longest ever was a loop about 20 miles that I had done with a friend on my comfort bike that I had bought from him 5 years earlier. He ended up talking me into a $3,000.00 plus Specialized road bike with the promise of 40 to 45 mile group rides and hopes of loving the sport. I must admit I did not believe I could do 30 miles let alone Sunday group rides. I now ride about 150 miles a week , go with the Spokes group on Sundays and sometimes during the week. You make great friends with the other riders. I have learned quit a lot about bike riding and especially group riding from Basil. Everyone at Spokes from Basil the owner to Kyle the master mechanic to Basil's son, his daughter and TJ the part time mechanic are truly a class act and very knowledgable. I have friends who have bought bikes from other shops that don't offer group rides or are more like you already paid for the bike why are you bothering us. They all have asked to come on Spokes rides and to my surprise Basil is glad to have them come. If you are looking for a full service shop, pleasant group rides and knowledgable staff who are always happy to guide you or make minor adjustments Spokes is the shop. The support I have recieved after the purchase from handel bar adjustment to the professional fitting makes my purchases worth every penny and so is the ponds lost ! read more

I have been there a few times looking into a Carbon Road bike. I have spoken to that manager a couple times over the past coulple of years. He was not helpful at all. (The help was). The manager just pointed to bike hanging and did not even offer to take it down so I could get a better look. He basically blew me off a couple of times. I'm not a great biker, but did do a 1/2 ironman earlier this year, and was looking to upgrade. I just walked out frustrated, and it was obvious this guy did not care to "sell" me a bike. OK, I don't have 5K for a road bike, but I do have 2K, which is a good bit of money, so I thought he would want to try to sell something. read more

Just bought a bike from Roauf at Spokes, and I could not be happier!! He measured me for the perfect fit, because we had to order the bike in my size. I have to admit, I was a little anxious buying an expensive bike sight unseen. However, it fits perfectly! Furthermore, Alex and the team could not have been more helpful fitting, fine tuning, and outfitting my new bike. The store has a lot of inventory and accessories. Alex suggested a new light, which I was initially planning to pass up. However, thanks to that light, I enjoyed a great ride at 0530 this morning. Was a bit skeptical after reading some of the reviews but decided to stop in as I was in the market for a tri bike. On my first visit Basil spent about 45 minutes with me discussing my needs. A couple of weeks later my wife stopped in and was treated very well. We ended up purchasing 2 Specialized Shiv and were very pleased with the service, time and attention we received during our fitting. Basil even took the time to help us rack our bikes. This is a great store, so support it. Online sales suck and I've gotten burned. I don't know why people would write a negative review of Spokes. They have an awesome selection of bikes, from commuters to high end racing rigs in the multi thousand dollar range. I love this store, so let me share my experience with you. I placed a special order for a road bike for my wife. As it turns out, she gets pregnant. I call and cancel the bike order, for now. No questions asked, Muneer is awesome as one of the managers and cancels. I then purchase a road bike for myself, my second so don't ask, and I would rather have a mountain bike. Again, no problem. Even though I took the bike home with me, and didn't ride it, they took my word for it and traded it for a mountain bike. Try that with any other bike shop, local or online, and they'll tell you to stick it. So there, a great review for a great bike shop. read more
