Been here 3 or 4 times. Always had a good experience. No high-pressure sales tactics. They helped guide me to a bike that was a good fit for my budget when I was looking to upgrade from my Trek Dual Sport 2 to a road or gravel bike. For example, they discussed the pros and cons of standard shifting versus electronic shifting. Recently, brought my daughter's bike to have the front derailleur fixed. Repeat customer but no longer. Looking for a new place after the customer service is lacking each and every time I have gone in there. I am "to keep checking the Facebook page" when I want to come back and get my bike serviced. "They don't have time right now" is all I was told. Nice customer service, right? Overpriced for their tire or tube repair. I have seen their customer service go down over the years and am saddened by this.

Let me start off by saying I have been coming to this shop since grade school (along with the rest of my family)..currently in my 30's. It used to be a good shop, but the past few times I've gone there I can't wait to leave. I understand smaller shops can't stock everything with the ease of online retailers, but this place has next to nothing. Plus the guy who I think is the owner is a real slice of life to deal with. I've gone here for things as little as long stem tubes, seat post clamps, etc and they either have garbage or they have to order it. All they seem to stock decently is Bontrager stuff and that's it. My biggest annoyance with this place is the atmosphere. It's always dead, quite, and the staff is hit or miss. The short guy with the resting bit**y face is a huge prick. I've brought friends here and they have commented on him without me bringing it up. Which is a shame because my mom has gone here a few times and dealt with other people and I believe the owner's wife and had a great experience. The final straw was being lied to and the slice of life guy being rude. I came to the shop awhile back looking for a Emonda. I knew the new models had launched and what old models should go for (I've worked at shops and have friends who one shops, just not Trek).I asked them for a few hundred off and no dice. No big deal. I then offered them a Zipp time trial wheel for the same deal. This thing was brand new and a Msrp of over two grand. The guy then told me there was a only a few left in the country. I said no dice and left in amazement. Now I wasn't expecting them to take a trade, but what a bunch of lying idiots. I went home and called Trek in Naperville and they said the quantity available of the bike I was looking for was double what Sumbaum said. They also wouldn't price match shops in the Chicago area. They also wouldn't do a actual fitting. Just the usual "you're about my height, buy this one". I ended up welling the zipp wheel for $1400 and building a bike via Ebay. Cannondale supersix evo high mod ,Sram Red 22, Reynolds Assualt SLG, along with Ritchey carbon parts. After selling the wheel, my total came out to a few hundred more than the Emonda Red I was looking at and far better quality. If you want a good deal and know what you want in a bike, stay away from shops...especially this one. Bunch of rude, lying, nothing in stock, bitter losers. Can't even price match and tell me the difference is gas alone to go to a different shop? I wouldn't stop here if I had a flat right outside. I now go to Bikes ETC in Naperville for service and small parts and couldn't be happier. A shame since this would be my local shop. This shop went from my favorite to the worst I've ever dealt with. Buy online and go elsewhere for your service needs. My friends and family have said the same thing and won't go near this shop. In this day in age with the deals on the internet, you should try and be nice and have a good atmosphere when all you do is service and sell completes. read more

This a real hometown bicycle shop. They stand behind their products and they take care of their customers. I bought a computer from them, but I couldn't get it to work. When I asked for help, Rob stopped working on the repair he was working and gave me his full attention. He not only helped me with my computer but he also taught me how make it work. I've purchased three bikes from Sumbaum for my family and I will continue to go there for parts and service. The sales representatives had numerous chances to push me toward an expensive bike, but the salespeople at Sumbaum always offered common sense options. They even showed me cheaper options to ensure I wasn't wasting money on too much bike for the rider. I recommend Sumbaum to everybody who is looking for a bike. read more

I brought my older Trek bike for repair on a Tuesday fully expecting to wait a week for it to be fixed. When I asked when it would be finished by the employee gave a "Wellllllll, we could have it done by Thursday afternoon." I was ecstatic, because I had a century ride coming up the following weekend. I was very pleased with the turnaround on their maintenance. Their showroom is very clean and organized with a wide range of bikes to choose from. I will definitely be upgrading to one of their new models in the next year. Overall a great experience! read more

I've purchased bike from there before and love the quality of a Trek. The hybrid model always suited me for trail and street. I've been going since 2000 and the owner is very knowledgeable with a helpful and courteous staff. If they don't have the bike in stock they will order with no problems. Good amount of accessories and prices are within reason. I get my trusty Trek 700 hybrid tuned up every so often and the tires I play with different treads. The best brand ever, TREK! read more

No I didn't by anything here. But I do have a story about why you should not go to this store unless they fire the employee(this happened about 2 years ago). My bike was stolen in Lincoln Park in Chicago. I searched craigslist and a week later it was for sale. I called the phone number and said I was interested. I came out to the store in Joliet and said I want to take it for a test drive. The man in his 40's said sure. I took and and drove it away and locked it up. Upon returning to the store the guy said, "What's going on? Where's the bike?". I said, "The bikes stolen, it's mine and I'm here to take it". He said, "whoa lets call the police. I said, "We can do this 2 ways. I take the bike or we call the police". I told him I have a receipt with serial number and he asked for me to show him. After showing him it was mine, he claimed he bought it at a flea market in Bollingbrook for $150 (which is possible, if you work in a bike store you know which bikes to buy and resell for more). Anyways, he was like, "well I guess I'm out $150 bucks, I said yea you are, next time don't buy stolen bikes. On a positive not I got a free tune up and he helped load it into my car. read more

I had recently decided to purchase a bike and I walked in knowing nothing except I wanted a bike and I looked around and they asked if I needed help I said that I have no clue what I'm looking for but I don't want something that the gears start skipping after a week like all the crappy Walmart bikes I have ever owned and he's said ok well let me show you a few bikes the he showed me 3 bikes one $550 one $645 and another that was like $1,350 and I told the man that I'm sorry but it's looking like I can't really afford them so the man said we can work on the price with you he then asked what do you want I said a different seat and a phone holder he said ok the bike and a seat for $500 and you can have my phone holder and the man was very patient with me and my questions and answers them all I picked up my bike and went to ride it home half way home the back tire tube popped I walked back had no clue what happened so I asked the man how much to fix it and he said don't worry about it I was very happy with my visit and highly recommend this place if you're looking to buy a bike every one there was really polite read more

In April, my wife and I decided that it was time to buy a couple of bikes and a trailer for our two year old son. We went in with the idea that we wanted to buy two Trek hybrids, but we didn't know the exact models we wanted. Being on the taller end of the height spectrum, I wasn't presented with a lot of options of hybrids in store. My wife, being of average height, had her pick of several models. We both ended up getting great bikes that work well for us, plus they happened to be selling the trailer we were looking at online for $50 less, so we bought that as well. We have since returned to buy a new seat for my wife, chain lube, and a computer and bar extensions for me. We receive personal attention each time we visit, along with fair, honest answers to our questions. If I had been left to my own devices and ordered the chain lube online, I would have bought too much of something I didn't really need for three times the price. Sure, Sumbaum may not have the selection of some online retailers, but that's a small negative compared to all the pros, such as their being extremely helpful and knowledgeable, the fact they sell Treks, and more of our money stays in our community when we shop here than when we choose to buy online.
